Ultimate Codes: Near-Optimal Mds Array Codes For Raid-6, Zhijie Huang, Hong Jiang, Chong Wang, Ke Zhou, Yuhong Zhao
School of Computing: Technical Reports
As modern storage systems have grown in size and complexity, RAID-6 is poised to replace RAID-5 as the dominant form of RAID architectures due to its ability to protect against double disk failures. Many excellent erasure codes specially designed for RAID-6 have emerged in recent years. However, all of them have limitations. In this paper, we present a class of near perfect erasure codes for RAID-6, called the Ultimate codes. These codes encode, update and decode either optimally or nearly optimally, regardless of what the code length is. This implies that utilizing these codes we can build highly efficient and …

S-Code: Lowest Density Mds Array Codes For Raid-6, Zhijie Huang, Hong Jiang, Ke Zhou, Yuhong Zhao, Chong Wang
School of Computing: Technical Reports
RAID, a storage architecture designed to exploit I/O parallelism and provide data reliability, has been deployed widely in computing systems as a storage building block. In large scale storage systems, in particular, RAID-6 is gradually replacing RAID-5 as the dominant form of disk arrays due to its capability of tolerating concurrent failures of any two disks. MDS (maximum distance separable) array codes are the most popular erasure codes that can be used for implementing RAID-6, since they enable optimal storage efficiency and efficient encoding and decoding algorithms. In this paper, we propose a new class of MDS array codes called …

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of The Mechanism Of Blast Wave Transmission Through A Surrogate Head, Yi Hua, Praveen Akula, Linxia Gu, Jeff Berg, Carl A. Nelson
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
This work is to develop an experiment-validated numerical model to elucidate the wave transmission mechanisms through a surrogate head under blast loading. Repeated shock tube tests were conducted on a surrogate head, i.e., water-filled polycarbonate shell. Surface strain on the skull simulant and pressure inside the brain simulant were recorded at multiple locations. A numerical model was developed to capture the shock wave propagation within the shock tube and the fluid-structure interaction between the shock wave and the surrogate head. The obtained numerical results were compared with the experimental measurements. The experiment-validated numerical model was then used to further understand …

The Applicability Of Vri For Managing Variability In Infiltration Capacity And Plant-Available Water: A Preliminary Discussion And Gis Study, Tsz Him Lo, Luciano Mateos, Derek M. Heeren, Joe D. Luck
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Although variable rate irrigation (VRI) has been researched and marketed for a number of years, research that quantifies the magnitude of VRI’s potential benefits and that are translatable to unmonitored fields is lacking. The potential reduction in seasonal irrigation is proposed as the criterion for beginning to evaluate the use of VRI to improve agricultural water management when infiltration capacity and plant-available water are spatially variable inside a field. An initial geographic information system study using publicly available geospatial data was conducted to examine soil and topographic properties associated with such variability within 1100 center pivots across 11 counties. The …

Finite Element Modeling Of Long-Term Phosphorus Leaching Through Macropores In The Ozark Ecoregion, Ryan P. Freiberger, Derek M. Heeren, Garey A. Fox, Chad J. Penn, Dean E. Eisenhauer
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
Phosphorus (P) is a critical nutrient for plant growth in agriculture, but is also responsible for surface water enrichment that leads to toxic algal growth. While P loading to surface waters has traditionally been thought to occur from surface runoff, contributions from subsurface transport can also be significant. While P transport through many soil types is well-documented, the presence of highly conductive gravel outcrops and macropore networks can have a significant, yet poorly-documented effect on P movement to the aquifer. Floodplain soils in the Ozark ecoregion generally contain coarse chert gravel layers that exhibit macropore behavior. Previous research has evaluated …

Aerodynamic Study Of Forces Due To Wind Velocity And Angle Of Attack On Parabolic Solar Troughs, Brian Northshield
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Scant literature exists of the atmospheric effects on parabolic solar troughs. The technology is relatively new, so supporting studies by consequence are as well.
This study examines the effects of wind at various speeds, with various angles of attack on parabolic solar troughs. This begins by picking up on previous study, corroborating previously found data, then introduces new angles of attack. The model includes the presence of the solar tube where other studies omit.
The purpose of this study is to build a data set which is useful for structural consideration. During the course of this study, it was found …

An Analysis Of Secular Change In Tides At Open-Ocean Sites In The Pacific, Edward D. Zaron, David A. Jay
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Hourly sea level is examined at 25 open-ocean stations in the Pacific Ocean with records longer than 30 yr. A search for trends finds that the amplitude of the dominant semidiurnal tide M2 is increasing at 12 of the 13 sites where a statistically significant trend can be identified. It is also found that nontidal variance in the neighborhood of M2 is decreasing at all 12 of the sites where a significant increase in M2 tide is occurring. The trend in amplitude of the dominant diurnal tide K1 is significant at six stations, and it is …

Overview Of Instruments For Investigating Dust Interactions On Small Solar System Bodies By Landers And Rovers, Ryan L. Kobrick, Jeffrey A. Hoffman, Kenneth W. Street Jr., Douglas L. Rickman
Publications
Small Solar System bodies such as asteroids, comets and Mars' moons Phobos and Deimos have relatively unknown regolith environments. It is hypothesized that dust preserved in the regolith on the surfaces will have similar mechanical properties to lunar dust because of similar formation processes from micrometeoric bombardment, low relative gravity for slow settling times, and virtually no weathering because there is no atmosphere.
Simple Fall Criteria For Mems Sensors: Data Analysis And Sensor Concept, Alwathiqbellah Ibrahim, Mohammad I. Younis
Simple Fall Criteria For Mems Sensors: Data Analysis And Sensor Concept, Alwathiqbellah Ibrahim, Mohammad I. Younis
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Scholarship
This paper presents a new and simple fall detection concept based on detailed experimental data of human falling and the activities of daily living (ADLs). Establishing appropriate fall algorithms compatible with MEMS sensors requires detailed data on falls and ADLs that indicate clearly the variations of the kinematics at the possible sensor node location on the human body, such as hip, head, and chest. Currently, there is a lack of data on the exact direction and magnitude of each acceleration component associated with these node locations. This is crucial for MEMS structures, which have inertia elements very close to the …
On The Centrality Of Disturbance Rejection In Automatic Control, Zhiqiang Gao
On The Centrality Of Disturbance Rejection In Automatic Control, Zhiqiang Gao
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
In this paper, it is shown that the problem of automatic control is, in essence, that of disturbance rejection, with the notion of disturbance generalized to symbolize the uncertainties, both internal and external to the plant. A novel, unifying concept of disturbance rejector is proposed to compliment the traditional notion of controller. The new controller-rejector pair is shown to be a powerful organizing principle in the realm of automatic control, leading to a Copernican moment where the model-centric design philosophy is replaced by the one that is control-centric in the following sense: the controller is designed for a canonical model …
Analysis Of Data Center Network Convergence Technologies, Robert-Lee Daniel Leblanc
Analysis Of Data Center Network Convergence Technologies, Robert-Lee Daniel Leblanc
Theses and Dissertations
The networks in traditional data centers have remained unchanged for decades and have grown large, complex and costly. Many data centers have a general purpose Ethernet network and one or more additional specialized networks for storage or high performance low latency applications. Network convergence promises to lower the cost and complexity of the data center network by virtualizing the different networks onto a single wire. There is little evidence, aside from vendors' claims, that validate network convergence actually achieves these goals. This work defines a framework for creating a series of unbiased tests to validate converged technologies and compare them …

Understanding the interactions among microbial communities, plant communities and soil properties following deforestation could provide insights into the long-term effects of land-use change on ecosystem functions, and may help identify approaches that promote the recovery of degraded sites. We combined high-throughput sequencing of fungal rDNA and molecular barcoding of plant roots to estimate fungal and plant community composition in soil sampled across a chronosequence of deforestation. We found significant effects of land-use change on fungal community composition, which was more closely correlated to plant community composition than to changes in soil properties or geographic distance, providing evidence for strong links …

Early Damage State Criterion From A Fault-Seeded Helicopter Gear Using Acoustic Emission And Neural Networks, Rudy L. Baum
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
In response to five failures since 2008 of the tail gearbox of multiple models of Sikorsky's H-60 helicopter, acoustic emission (AE) data collected from a rotating gearbox test stand at the Naval Air Station in Patuxtent River, MD, was used to monitor the initiation and propagation of a flaw from an electro-discharge machined (EDM) notch seeded on the face of a gear tooth. A period of testing was considered which spanned ~300,000 seconds or ~83 hours and culminates to a damage state such that a flaw has initiated on both ends of the EDM notch. AE data was analyzed for …

Energy Conservation By Intermittently Recirculating And Aerating An Aquaponics System With An Airlift, Bjorg Magnea Olafs
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
An airlift device providing aeration and circulation was designed to reduce electrical power requirements for aquaponics by eliminating the need for a water pump. The airlift performed better than predicted and achieved water flow rates of 10 L/min at 25 °C, in comparison to the theoretical design performance 2.65 L/min.
Koi (Cyprinus carpio) and sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) were cultured for five weeks in two identical aquaponics systems. The system was located indoors and consisted of a fish tank, a sump tank, and a soil-free growth media bed under artificial lighting. The total water volume in each system was 230 …

Passive Localization Of Noise-Producing Targets Using A Compact Volumetric Array, John Gebbie, Martin Siderius, Peter L. Nielsen, James Miller
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A technique is presented for passively localizing multiple noise-producing targets by cross-correlating the elevation beams of a compact volumetric array on separate bearings. A target’s multipath structure inherently contains information about its range; however, unknown, random noise waveforms make time separation of individual arrivals difficult. Ocean ambient noise has previously been used to measure multipath delays to the seabed by cross-correlating the beams of a vertical line array [Siderius, Song, Gerstoft, Hodgkiss, Hursky, and Harrison, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 127, 2193–2200 (2010)], but this methodology has not been applied to distant noise sources having non-vertical arrivals. The technique presented in …
Grid-Scale Energy Storage: A Proposed Control Algorithm For Sodium Sulfur Batteries, Daniel Spaizman
Grid-Scale Energy Storage: A Proposed Control Algorithm For Sodium Sulfur Batteries, Daniel Spaizman
Master's Theses
With carbon dioxide levels in our atmosphere reaching record highs and 2020 quickly approaching, California is expected to pave the way for the United States in terms of replacing fossil fuel generation facilities with various renewable energy power plants. It is well documented that the inherent variability and limited duty cycle of renewables has hindered their growth. Energy storage technologies represent the bridge that can help us cross the divide from where we stand to where we must stand in the next 6 years. Utility companies value services such as peak shaving, voltage support, and frequency regulation, all of which …

Master's Theses
Durable, cheap, and lightweight polymer based solar cells are needed, if simply to meet the demand for decentralized electrical power production in traditionally “off-grid” areas. Using a blend of Poly(3-hexylthiophene-2,5-diyl) (P3HT), Phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (PCBM), and the low band-gap polymer Poly[2,6-(4,4-bis-(2- ethylhexyl)-4H-cyclopenta [2,1-b;3,4-b′]dithiophene)-alt-4,7(2,1,3-benzothiadiazole)] (PCPDTBT), we have fabricated devices with a wide spectral response and 3% power conversion efficiency in AM 1.5 conditions; however, this thin film system exhibits only 0.43 optical density at 500 nm. To improve the performance of this polymer blend photovoltaic, we aim to increase absorption by adding CdSe(ZnS) core (shell) quantum dots. Four groups of …

"This is a study of how a virtual technology burden was created that impacted the professional pilot college student and various colleges/universities that offer professional pilot degree programs. A cascading set of events began as a result of U.S. congressional reaction to a tragic airline accident. The resulting legislation forced the Federal Aviation Administration to publish new rules for first officer qualifications that were unmindful of the recommendations of professional pilot groups for simulation-based training. Ultimately, this placed a financial burden on both the college/university training curriculum and …

Stochastic Analysis Of Cascading-Failure Dynamics In Power Grids, Mahshid Rahnamay-Naeini, Zhuoyao Wang, Nasir Ghani, Andrea Mammoli, Majeed M. Hayat
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
A scalable and analytically tractable probabilistic model for the cascading failure dynamics in power grids is constructed while retaining key physical attributes and operating characteristics of the power grid. The approach is based upon extracting a reduced abstraction of large-scale power grids using a small number of aggregate state variables while modeling the system dynamics using a continuous-time Markov chain. The aggregate state variables represent critical power-grid attributes, which have been shown, from prior simulation-based and historical-data-based analysis, to strongly influence the cascading behavior. The transition rates among states are formulated in terms of certain parameters that capture grid's operating …

Biodegradable electrospun poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) scaffolds were coated with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to improve cell adhesion and proliferation. PRP was obtained from human buffy coat, and tested on human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) to confirm cell proliferation and cytocompatibility. Then, PRP was adsorbed on the PCL scaffolds via lyophilization, which resulted in uniform sponge-like coating of 2.85 (s.d. 0.14) mg/mg. The scaffolds were evaluated regarding mechanical properties (Young’s modulus, tensile stress and tensile strain), sustained release of total protein and growth factors (PDGF-BB, TGF-β1 and VEGF), and hemocompatibility. MSC seeded on the PRP-PCL nanofibers showed an increased adhesion and proliferation …
Invariant Inferring And Monitoring In Robotic Systems, Hengle Jiang
Invariant Inferring And Monitoring In Robotic Systems, Hengle Jiang
School of Computing: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
System monitoring can help to detect abnormalities and avoid failures. Crafting monitors for today’s robotic systems, however, can be very difficult due to the systems’ inherent complexity and its rich operating environment.
In this work we address this challenge through an approach that automatically infers system invariants and synthesizes those invariants into monitors. This approach is inspired by existing software engineering approaches for automated invariant inference, and it is novel in that it derives invariants by observing the messages passed between system nodes and the invariants types are tailored to match the spatial, time, temporal, and architectural attributes of robotic …

Elastic Energy Absorption Via Compliant Corrugations, Sean S. Tolman
Elastic Energy Absorption Via Compliant Corrugations, Sean S. Tolman
Theses and Dissertations
Elastic absorption of kinetic energy and distribution of impact forces are required in many applications. This may be achieved through the use of compliant corrugations. An innovative padding concept is investigated for such applications. Also, recent attention given to the potential for using origami in engineering applications may provide new corrugation configurations that are advantageous for energy absorption and force distribution. This work explores three areas related to these concepts.First, the parameters of a compliant, corrugated padding concept are investigated using Finite Element Analyses (FEA) and physical testing. The shape of the corrugation cross section is explored as well as …
Pharmacokinetic Characterization Of Procoagulation Proteins, Nicholas C. Vanderslice
Pharmacokinetic Characterization Of Procoagulation Proteins, Nicholas C. Vanderslice
Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The cessation of bleeding in mammals occurs due to a well-conserved sequence of protein activation known as the coagulation cascade. However, people who have a deficiency in one or more proteins in this cascade, whether due to genetics or blood loss, struggle to maintain hemostasis. In order to aid patients in the restoration of hemostasis, exogenous proteins are often administered in response to bleeding events. However, these proteins are limited and costly due to limited supply of donor blood available for the production of plasma-derived proteins and the high cost of mammalian cell bio-reactors required for the production of recombinant …
A Method To Define Requirements For System Of Systems, Randy Gene Walker
A Method To Define Requirements For System Of Systems, Randy Gene Walker
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this research was to develop and apply a systems-based method for defining System of Systems (SoS) requirements using an inductive research design. Just as traditional Systems Engineering (TSE) includes a requirements definition phase, so too does System of Systems Engineering (SoSE); only with a wider, more over- arching, systemic perspective. TSE addresses the design and development of a single system with generally a very specific functional purpose enabled by any number of subcomponents. SoSE however, addresses the design and development of a large, complex system to meet a wide range of functional purposes enabled by any number …

Idpal – A Partially-Adiabatic Energy-Efficient Logic Family: Theory And Applications To Secure Computing, Mihail T. Cutitaru
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Low-power circuits and issues associated with them have gained a significant amount of attention in recent years due to the boom in portable electronic devices. Historically, low-power operation relied heavily on technology scaling and reduced operating voltage, however this trend has been slowing down recently due to the increased power density on chips. This dissertation introduces a new very-low power partially-adiabatic logic family called Input-Decoupled Partially-Adiabatic Logic (IDPAL) with applications in low-power circuits. Experimental results show that IDPAL reduces energy usage by 79% compared to equivalent CMOS implementations and by 25% when compared to the best adiabatic implementation. Experiments ranging …
Evaluation Of Degradation In Gan High Electron Mobility Transistors Due To The Inverse Piezoelectric Effect, Deepthi Nagulapally
Evaluation Of Degradation In Gan High Electron Mobility Transistors Due To The Inverse Piezoelectric Effect, Deepthi Nagulapally
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
It has recently been postulated that high voltage stress can result in the degradation of nanoscale structures that are made up of piezoelectric materials. The inverse piezoelectric effect (IPE) is believed to be the likely reason for this degradation mechanism. Basically, the IPE leads to the creation of high internal stresses driven by the presence of an electric field. Consequently, devices based on piezoelectric materials are postulated to undergo defect formation induced by the large mechanical stress arising from the inverse piezoelectric effect in the presence of an applied bias. GaN based devices are mostly observed to show this degradation …

Graphical Display Of The Effect Of Three Cash Flow Elements For Sensitivity Analysis, Kawintorn Pothanun
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Sensitivity analysis is one of the most important analysis techniques in a decision making process. The analytic intent behind sensitivity analysis is the variation of parameters in data models, and the examination of the effect of these variations on the outcome of the models. There are four primary benefits from conducting a sensitivity analysis: (a) sensitivity analysis facilitates the decision makers' development of recommendations, (b) sensitivity analysis serves as a tool for communication among stakeholders or decision makers in a project or an organization, (c) sensitivity analysis increases overall understanding of the decision models, and (d) sensitivity analysis serves as …
Numerical Study Of Poration And Ionic Conduction In Nanopores Caused By High-Intensity, Nanosecond Pulses In Cell, Hao Qiu
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on the dynamics and bioeffects of electroporation of biological cell and ionic conduction in nanopores under high-intensity, nanosecond pulses. The electroporation model utilized the current continuity equation and the asymptotic Smoluchowski equation to explore the transmembrane potential and pore density of the plasma and intracellular membranes; the ionic conduction model employed the Poisson-Nernst-Planck equations and the Navier-Stokes equations to analyze the ionic current and ion concentration profile.
Nanosecond electric pulses of high-intensity amplitude can initiate electroporation of intracellular organelles. The pulse parameters and cell electrical properties, that can selectively electroporate liposomes but keep the plasma and nuclear …
