In Vivo Flow Measurements Of Murine Renal Arteries And Veins With High Frequency Ultrasound, Amy E. Bogucki, Hilary D. Schroeder, Alexa A. Yrineo, Craig J. Goergen
In Vivo Flow Measurements Of Murine Renal Arteries And Veins With High Frequency Ultrasound, Amy E. Bogucki, Hilary D. Schroeder, Alexa A. Yrineo, Craig J. Goergen
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
The number of glomeruli in the kidneys has been shown to have an effect on the decline in renal function over time (Brenner, Garcia, Anderson 1988). Furthermore, flow in the renal arteries and veins may depend on the number of glomeruli in the kidney. Consistent in vivo measurements of volumetric flow in the renal arteries and veins are difficult to obtain. Thus, the purpose of this study was to develop non-invasive imaging techniques capable of estimating arterial and venous flow to kidneys. A high-frequency small animal ultrasound system was chosen based upon its excellent spatial and temporal resolution when imaging …
Semi-Active Structural Control Of A 2-Story Shear Building, Alana K. Wilbee, Shirley Dyke
Semi-Active Structural Control Of A 2-Story Shear Building, Alana K. Wilbee, Shirley Dyke
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
With continuing urban development across the world, it is becoming ever more important to provide increased structural safety against events such as earthquakes and strong winds. The field of structural control has recently been growing to meet these challenges through the use of semi-active control methods, such as the Magnetorheological (MR) Damper. However, due to the non-linearity of the device, the knowledge base surrounding the MR Damper and its various control algorithms still needs to be strengthened before large-scale implementation of this control method can occur. To address these issues, this study will examine a two story benchmark structure using …
Stanford Stratified Structure Solver (S4) Simulation Tool, Chang Liu, Xufeng Wang, Peter Bermel
Stanford Stratified Structure Solver (S4) Simulation Tool, Chang Liu, Xufeng Wang, Peter Bermel
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
The Stanford Stratified Structure Solver (S4) developed in 2012 allows for fast, accurate prediction of optical propagation through complex 3D structures. However, there have been two key challenges preventing wider use to date: the use of a specialized control language, and the difficulty of incorporating realistic materials parameters. In this project, both concerns have been addressed. We have constructed a graphical user interface as an alternative, using the open-source Rappture platform on nanoHUB. This has been combined with a comprehensive materials database known as PhotonicsDB, which incorporates materials optical data drawn from carefully vetted sources. An Octave script file was …
Determination Of Master Compliance Curve For Extruded Semolina Pasta, Laura E. Emery, Martin Okos
Determination Of Master Compliance Curve For Extruded Semolina Pasta, Laura E. Emery, Martin Okos
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
The dependence of the rate of relaxation of semolina pasta on moisture content and temperature and how it affects shrinkage during drying has not yet been determined. The purpose of this research was to develop an equation that relates moisture content and temperature in order to obtain a master curve for creep of the product. When found, this equation could help to optimize the drying process and increase the quality of the final pasta product. Semolina flour mixed with water and propionic acid to create a 35% wet basis product was extruded on a C.W. Brabender 2523 to obtain a …
Open Cortex-M0™ Modular Debug Unit, Chuan Yean Tan, Matthew Swabey
Open Cortex-M0™ Modular Debug Unit, Chuan Yean Tan, Matthew Swabey
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
The debug unit of a modern digital system on chip (SoC) is a critical unit that allows users to monitor and analyze the chip’s activity that occurs throughout a SoC design. Selection of the debug unit’s correct feature set and architecture are critical to the success of the design. Debugging systems that exist have different architectures and are closely coupled to their host SoCs. As a consequence they are resource intensive to improve on due to the different nature of each SoC designs. Moreover, the bus protocols that allow the debug unit to interact with the SoC design are often …
Artificial Yeast Polarization Controlled By Chemical Gradient, James K. Nolan, Bernard Tao
Artificial Yeast Polarization Controlled By Chemical Gradient, James K. Nolan, Bernard Tao
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Engineering synthetic multicellular systems will lead to new synthetic biology technological platforms, inform developmental biology through recapitulation of natural systems and possibly unveil novel morphologies with practical applications not before reached throughout natural history (Maharbiz, 2012). Creating an exogenous molecular circuit that will polarize unicellular cells into “apical” and “basal” domains relative to a substrate plane would fulfill a missing component towards fully multicellular synthetic cellular communities (Maharbiz, 2012). To this end, a PIP3 polarization network previously designed by Chau and associates (Chau, Walter, Gerardin, Tang, Lim 2012) was coupled to the specific activation by niacin of a recombinant …
Designing Meaningful Molecular Dynamics (Md) Simulations: The Lithiation Of Silicon, María Camila Rincon, Alejandro Strachan, Hojin Kim, David Guzman, Mathew Cherukara
Designing Meaningful Molecular Dynamics (Md) Simulations: The Lithiation Of Silicon, María Camila Rincon, Alejandro Strachan, Hojin Kim, David Guzman, Mathew Cherukara
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Molecular dynamics (MD) is used to understand the properties of materials by following the time evolution of the system and exploring the interactions between its constituent atoms. MD simulation allows making reliable predictions of various properties of materials; however, designing useful computer experiments is a complex task that requires the appropriate selection of interatomic interactions (force fields) and other conditions. In this work we discuss some aspects of molecular dynamics that would help the inexperienced users design reliable simulations. The simulation of the lithiation process of silicon is taken as an example for better understanding.

The Efficacy And Optimization Of Somatosensory Intracortical Microstimulation In Rats, Sean P. Mcdowell, Ryan S. Verner, Kevin J. Otto Dr.
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Demand exists for brain-machine interfaces that offer a wide range of sensory feedback along with volitional motor control to individuals with limited control of natural sensory or motor function. As these sensorimotor devices are developed, it is necessary to improve the interaction between the prostheses and higher-level cortical structures. Optimizing these somatosensory stimulation parameters will require the use of a high-throughput experimental design. To address this, one Sprague-Dawley rat was trained to respond to auditory stimuli during a conditioned-avoidance behavior task and then implanted with a penetrating microelectrode array in the part of the somatosensory cortex corresponding to the left …
Assessing The Mvs Model For Nanotransistors, Siyang Liu, Xingshu Sun, Mark S. Lundstrom
Assessing The Mvs Model For Nanotransistors, Siyang Liu, Xingshu Sun, Mark S. Lundstrom
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
A simple semi-empirical compact MOSFET model has been developed, which is called MIT virtual source (MVS) model. Compare to other model used in industry, MVS model requires only a few parameters, most of which can be directly obtained from experiment, and produce accurate results. One aim of this paper is to test the applicability of the MVS model to transistor made from MoS2 rather than silicon. Another target is to determine the sustainability of the MVS model under different transistor tests. To achieve these goals, the MVS model will be used to fit the experimental data on MoS2 …

In Vivo Method For Labeling And Tracking Cells In The Mammalian Limb Bud, James T. Mccarthy, Andrew Schilb, Sarah Calve
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
The extracellular matrix (ECM) is composed of many different proteins excreted by cells and is believed to play a very important role in development as well as regeneration and wound healing. In this research, a method to determine the ECM’s effect on the migration of muscle progenitor cells into the mammalian limb bud was investigated. It has traditionally been difficult to obtain in vivo images of the limb bud, due to the difficulty of maintaining embryos in culture and limitations of imaging techniques. In this study, we have worked on optimizing the culture conditions to allow growth of mouse embryos …

There are many different active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) that have been discovered in research labs all around the world that can be used to treat and cure patients with a variety of different ailments. The challenge with these APIs in treatments is that they are not soluble in water, thus they low absorption into the blood stream (bio-availability). The key to making these APIs more bio-available is to understand how they grow as crystals and drop out of the aqueous solutions. One of the ways these APIs were made more bio-available is to render them amorphous and suspend them in …

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) rupture is a common cause of mortality in the United States. Current treatments are only employed once the risk of rupture outweighs the risks associated with surgery. Murine models have been developed to characterize AAA pathogenesis in the hope that new treatments will be developed. For this study, angiotensin II (AngII) was infused subcutaneously into apolipoprotein E-deficient (ApoE-/-) mice using an osmotic mini-pump over 28 days. ApoE-/- mice (16-week-old, 3 females, 2 males) were imaged using a VisualSonics Vevo 2100 high frequency ultrasound before pump implantation and 3, 7, 14, 21, and 27 …

The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Ion sputtering is the removal of surface atoms or molecules in a solid under energetic ion irradiation. This technique is promising for its applications in material modification and characterization. Sputtering yield, the average number of atoms removed from a sample per incident ion, is a crucial parameter in material modification. In the present study, a quartz crystal microbalance was used within an ultra-high vacuum chamber (10E-8 torr) to measure the sputtering yield of gold. An NTI-1401 ion gun was used to bombard argon and helium ions onto a gold sample. The argon and helium ions used ranged in energy from …
Interaction Model Of Functions In The National Airspace System, Nathan F. Koerschner, Steven J. Landry
Interaction Model Of Functions In The National Airspace System, Nathan F. Koerschner, Steven J. Landry
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
The National Airspace System (NAS) is comprehensively described by five functions derived from big-picture goals: (1) conflict detection and resolution, (2) controlling aircraft states, (3) traffic flow management, (4) controlling passenger states, and (5) controlling company resources. It can be reasonably assumed that these functions interact in some way; this interaction is currently unknown. A model of the entire NAS would be helpful in discovering these interactions, yet no such comprehensive model exists. To address this problem an agent-based state-based model was created in MATLAB. To date, only functions (1) and (2) were implemented. Running the model shows that there …

Image Skeletal Muscle Progenitors In Situ To Investigate How The Ecm Composition Regulates Musculoskeletal Assembly, Andrew L. Schilb, Sarah Calve
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Regenerative medicine has difficulty with the human body’s inability to functionally repair tissues lost as a result of disease or serious accident. Through tissue engineering, there has been development of various scaffolding with the purpose of enhancing skeletal muscle regrowth and functionality. The scaffolds are typically constructed from artificial polymers or decellularized extracellular matrix (ECM) that mimics adult tissue. These standardized scaffolds are hindered though by the host since tissue engineers have not taken into account of how the composition musculoskeletal ECM during tissue repair is dramatically different than that of a homeostatic adult. Now green fluorescent protein positive (GFP+) …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Bismuth Telluride Nanoparticles For Use In Flexible Polymer-Nanoparticle Hybrid Thermoelectric Devices, Alexander R. Muller, Bryan Boudouris, Edward P. Tomlinson
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Polymer-based thermoelectric materials, which can have readily-tuned properties through simple control of their chemistry, offer the promise of providing flexible, lightweight, and low-cost modules for the environmentally-friendly conversion of waste heat to electricity without the need for moving parts. As such, they have started to be explored in applications ranging from improved building efficiency to increased mileage in automobiles. However, widespread implementation of these materials is limited due to their low performance relative to their mechanically-rigid, heavy inorganic material-based counterparts. Therefore, a critical need exists to design polymer-nanoparticle composite materials to increase the energy conversion of thin film thermoelectric devices. …
Multi-Factorial Stability Study Of Metabolites, Ruijun Zheng, John A. Morgan
Multi-Factorial Stability Study Of Metabolites, Ruijun Zheng, John A. Morgan
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Previous research done on metabolites has found that high energy compounds like adenosine triphosphate(ATP), nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate reduced (NADPH) or nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide reduced (NADH) are unstable in cell extracts at relatively high temperature and acidic condition. The multifactorial stability study of metabolites enables us to verify the best condition of storage for these energy compounds and sugar phosphates, as well as to strengthen the understanding of metabolism in biological study. As the most solvents for high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) are acidic and unfavorable for these energy compounds, it is necessary to perform a detailed study about …
Tobacco Mosaic Virus Implemented As An Interfacial Layer In Organic Photovoltaic Cells, Monica D. Del Real, Bryan Boudouris
Tobacco Mosaic Virus Implemented As An Interfacial Layer In Organic Photovoltaic Cells, Monica D. Del Real, Bryan Boudouris
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Organic photovoltaics (OPVs) are flexible, light weight, and economical to produce due to low processing temperatures, solution processing, and print fabrication. This makes them optimal for a wide range of applications. However, the efficiencies of OPVs are currently not high enough for them to be viable in the market or to be able to compete with inorganic photovoltaics. Therefore the integration of new materials and methods into OPVs in order to increase their efficiency is a vital field. One way to increase the efficiency of OPVs is to increase the surface area in-between layers to allow for enhanced electron transport. …

Experimental Study Of Co2 Recycling Using Metal-Oxide Enhanced Coconut Char Gasification: Catalytic Effect Of Potassium Carbonate On Gasification, Mengqi Gao, Indraneel Sircar, Jay P. Gore
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Biomass gasification is an important process in the production of bio-derived fuels and renewable energy. Biomass gasification with CO2 is an endothermic process requiring high temperatures, resulting in low process-efficiency. Metals found in the ash in biomass feedstock have shown rate-promoting effects on the C-CO2 reaction and have motivated the study of low-temperature catalytic gasification. The present study investigates the catalytic effects of potassium (K) on the biomass gasification reactivity of a coconut-derived char (>99.9% carbon) within the temperature range of 600 – 1000 oC. A wet-impregnation technique is used to prepare K-treated chars. Gasification of …
Compression Testing And Failure Modes Of Steel-Concrete Composite (Sc) Structures For Nuclear Containment, Patrick Michael Wanamaker, Amit H. Varma
Compression Testing And Failure Modes Of Steel-Concrete Composite (Sc) Structures For Nuclear Containment, Patrick Michael Wanamaker, Amit H. Varma
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Although being able to provide much cleaner power than burning coal and other fossil fuels, nuclear power plants are still a tough sell to the general public due to their history of being spontaneously dangerous. The containment structures surrounding these nuclear plants, however, can play a huge role in reducing the risks associated with them. Relatively new designs for these containment assemblies, known as SC (steel-concrete composite) structures, aim to increase the strength and durability of the containment facilities while keeping costs down. By varying the spacing between shear studs, the ratio of concrete to steel, and the ratio of …
Quantitative Measurement Of Intuitiveness Of Visualization Techniques, Jeongjoon Boo, Ji Soo Yi
Quantitative Measurement Of Intuitiveness Of Visualization Techniques, Jeongjoon Boo, Ji Soo Yi
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
More and more visualizations and infographics are being adopted as a part of data communication (e.g., news articles and personal blogs) because they can not only present more details succinctly but also allow viewers explore data by themselves. However, when an information provider needs to decide which type of graphs, there is not much reliable information out there. For example, we do not know what portion of general public understands how to comprehend a type of graph, such as a scatter plot, without any explanation. Thus, the aim of this project is to quantify the level of intuitiveness of different …

Simulation Of Beam Dynamics For Mems Devices, Saagar Unadkat, Devon Parkos, Alina Alexeenko
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) are systems made up of small components to complete a bigger goal. Some of these components can be modeled as small beams, which are anchored at both sides, or as cantilever beams. These beams can be subjected to various forces such as Knudsen Forces, Electrostatic Forces as well as G-loading. These devices have many applications such as sensors, actuators and even as accelerometers for airbags, smart phones and game controllers. Modeling the dynamics of these beams is an important task for the MEMS community, consisting of researchers, fabricators, and designers working on one of the many applications …

Kinetic Monte Carlo (kMC) is a set of scientific libraries designed to deploy kMC simulations intended to simulate the time evolution of some processes occurring in nature. kMC is currently allows the user to intuitively generate single component crystal lattices to simulate, post process, and visualize the kinetic Monte Carlo-based atomistic evolution of materials. kMC provides an interface to the Stochastic Parallel PARticle Kinetic Simulator (SPPARKS) [1] and is specifically designed to simulate individual atomic deposition (condensation) and dissolution (evaporation) events, while simultaneously tracking the surface and bulk crystallographic anisotropic diffusion. The main goal of this project is to create …
Advancement Of Legged Locomotion Models By Including Nonlinear Damping, Ian Abraham, Zhuohua H. Shen, Justin E. Seipel
Advancement Of Legged Locomotion Models By Including Nonlinear Damping, Ian Abraham, Zhuohua H. Shen, Justin E. Seipel
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Accurately predicting human locomotion has been a goal of various mathematical models. Early canonical models of locomotion were developed to predict the basic features of ground reaction forces (GRF). More recently, modified hip actuated and leg damped locomotion models have been developed to better predict the stability and robustness of human and animal locomotion. Such improvements have resulted in the loss of the characteristic GRF predicted by earlier models. Historically, GRF are among the most common measures to experimentally study human locomotion. Thus, it is important to develop new mathematical models that predict both accurate stability of motion, as well …

Modeling Target Disinfection By-Product Dynamics In Indoor Swimming Pools, Barnard S. Mondal, Cary Troy, Mehrnaz Afifi, Shih-Chi Weng, Ernest R. Blatchley Iii
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Chlorination is the primary disinfection method for swimming pools in the United States; however, chlorine also reacts with pollutants (e.g., sweat, urine and anthropogenic compounds) to form disinfection by-products (DBPs). Some DBPs are asthma causing (e.g. nitrogen-trichloride) and even carcinogens (e.g., trihalomethanes and nitrosamines). Consequently, exposure to DBPs poses health risks to patrons and staff in pool environments. Furthermore, volatilization of DBPs is enhanced by bather activity, but the relationship between activity and volatilization has yet been quantified such that the dynamic behavior of DBPs can be predicted. Therefore, the objective of this research is to …
Validation Of Long-Fiber Thermoplastic Composite Models, Christian A. Vuong, Megan Kinney, Michael Sangid
Validation Of Long-Fiber Thermoplastic Composite Models, Christian A. Vuong, Megan Kinney, Michael Sangid
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
With increased pressure to reduce energy consumption, long-fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites (LFTs) are of interest to aerospace and automotive industries due to their light weight in combination with other desirable mechanical properties and ease of manufacturing to replace common materials such as aluminum and magnesium. However, the performance of LFTs is highly dependent on microstructural variables such as fiber length and orientation, which are heavily influenced by the manufacturing process. Accurately predicting these factors would allow for more rapid advances in LFTs by reducing the experiments needed for certification and decreasing expenses. While models that serve this purpose exist, the …
Improvement On Cylinder-To-Cylinder Variation In Pcci Engines Using Variable Start Of Injection And Exhaust Valve Closing Timings, Aðalsteinn Axelsson, Greg Shaver
Improvement On Cylinder-To-Cylinder Variation In Pcci Engines Using Variable Start Of Injection And Exhaust Valve Closing Timings, Aðalsteinn Axelsson, Greg Shaver
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Premixed charge compression ignition (PCCI) is widely considered to be a possible method of meeting increasingly strict emissions regulations in internal combustion engines. PCCI can reduce harmful emissions substantially and at the same time increase efficiency relative to conventional combustion modes. Because of the nature of PCCI, changes in in-cylinder conditions have a greater impact than in conventional diesel engines. Therefore cylinder to cylinder variations are amplified which leads to problems such as misfire and decreased efficiency in cylinders with increased ignition delay and lower apparent heat release rate (AHRR) amplitudes. Two possible methods to counteract this effect in diesel …

Most of the control methodology of Mobile hydraulic crane is not as energy efficient as people think or want, and the desire to innovate novel, energy-efficient control strategy is the target of most hydraulic experts. To develop or test the control method under real road and off-road conditions, a platform that could simulate the movement and vibration of the crane truck is desired. To design and build the multi-operation platform, a design process includes brain storming, design selection, FEA (Fundamental Element Analysis), mechanical sizing, hydraulic sizing and Bill of Material is required and preferred. After going through all the steps …

Thermophotovoltaic System Efficiency Simulation, Qingshuang Chen, Roman Shugayev, Peter Bermel
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Thermophotovoltaic (TPV) power systems, which convert heat into electricity using a photovoltaic diode to collect thermal radiation, have attracted increasing attention in recent work. It has recently been proposed that new optical structures such as photonic crystals can significantly improve the efficiency of these devices in two ways. First, the electronic bandgap of the TPV diode should match the photonic bandgap of the emitter, in order to ensure that the majority of emitted photons can be converted. Second, a photonic crystal short-pass optical filter can be added to the front of the TPV diode to send long wavelength photons back …

Optimization Of Oil Extraction Of Soy Flour Using Mini Extrusion Technology, Alisha Chess, Martin Okos
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Mini extrusion technology is a relatively new technology that offers fast timing and processing of food products. This technology paired with the advantageous properties and growing demand for soybeans can lead to a larger span of uses for the extruder that have not yet been explored, including NASA space missions and incorporation of soybeans into developing countries. During past research on parameters of operation, it was discovered that a significant amount of oil was being separated from the soy meal at the die of the mini extruder. Maximum removal of this oil allows use of the soy meal and soy …
