Molten Carbonates As An Effective Oxygen Reduction Catalyst For 550–650°C Solid Oxide Fuel Cells, Yunhui Gong, Xue Li, Lingling Zhang, Whitney Tharp, Changyong Qin, Kevin Huang

Faculty Publications

We report the first study that investigates the use of molten carbonates as an effective catalyst to promote electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the cathode of intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). A series of binary Li-K carbonate compositions were incorporated into the porous backbones of a commercial cathode assembled in symmetrical impedance cells for electrochemical characterization. Within the temperature range of 550–650◦C, we observed that the polarization and ohmic area-specific resistances of the original sample can be significantly reduced by the introduction of molten carbonates. A new ORR charge-transfer model involving two intermediate species CO5 2− and …

Capacity Fade Model For Spinel Limn2O4 Electrode, Yiling Dai, Long Cai, Ralph E. White Jan 2013

Capacity Fade Model For Spinel Limn2O4 Electrode, Yiling Dai, Long Cai, Ralph E. White

Faculty Publications

A mathematical model for the capacity fade of a LiMn2O4 (LMO) electrode is developed in this paper by including the acid attack on the active material and the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) film formation on the LMO particle surface. The acid generated by the LiPF6 and the solvent decompositions are coupled to the manganese (Mn) dissolution. The decrease of the Li ion diffusion coefficient is involved as another contribution to the capacity fade, which is caused by the passive film formation on the active material surface. The effects of cell practical operation/fabrication conditions and kinetics of …

Reactive Self-Heating Model Of Aluminum Spherical Nanoparticles, Karen S. Martirosyan, Maxim Zyskin Jan 2013

Reactive Self-Heating Model Of Aluminum Spherical Nanoparticles, Karen S. Martirosyan, Maxim Zyskin

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

Aluminum-oxygen reaction is important in highly energetic and high pressure generating systems. Recent experiments with nanostructured thermites suggest that oxidation of aluminum nanoparticles occurs in a few microseconds. Such rapid reaction cannot be explained by a conventional diffusion-based mechanism. We present a rapid oxidation model of a spherical aluminum nanoparticle, using Cabrera-Mott moving boundary mechanism, and taking self-heating into account. In our model, electric potential solves the nonlinear Poisson equation. In contrast with the Coulomb potential, a “double-layer” type solution for the potential and self-heating leads to enhanced oxidation rates. At maximal reaction temperature of 2000 C, our model predicts …

Secondary Collisions Revisited: Real-World Crash Data And Relationship To Crash Test Criteria, Randall C. Gowat, Douglas J. Gabauer

Faculty Journal Articles

Objectives: Previous research conducted in the late 1980s suggested that vehicle impacts following an initial barrier collision increase severe occupant injury risk. Now over 25years old, the data are no longer representative of the currently installed barriers or the present US vehicle fleet. The purpose of this study is to provide a present-day assessment of secondary collisions and to determine if current full-scale barrier crash testing criteria provide an indication of secondary collision risk for real-world barrier crashes. Methods: To characterize secondary collisions, 1,363 (596,331 weighted) real-world barrier midsection impacts selected from 13years (1997-2009) of in-depth crash data available through …

Experiments To Measure The Effects Of Timber Harvesting Equipment On Surface Lithic Scatters, Douglas J. Baughman

All Master's Theses

The importance of cultural resource preservation cannot be overstated; however local economies are at least as important. Due to conservative archaeological site protection practices in Region 5 of the United States Forest Service, the economy of Northeastern California is being adversely affected. In an attempt to help the Forest Service make more informed management decisions and improve the Northeastern California economy, I undertook experiments on the effects of timber harvesting on lithic scatters on Modoc National Forest. The experiments involved placement of 225 glass tiles (proxy lithics) in each of three plots subject to vehicle traffic and log dragging by …

Impact Of Water And Nitrogen Management Strategies On Maize Yield And Water Productivity Indices Under Linear-Move Sprinkler Irrigation, Daran Rudnick, Suat Irmak

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

With uncertainty in future irrigation water availability and regulations on nutrient application amounts, experimentally determined effects of “controllable” management strategies such as nitrogen (N), water, and their combination on crop water productivity (CWP, also known as crop water use efficiency) and actual evapotranspiration (ETa) are essential. The effects of various N application rates (0, 84, 140, 196, and 252 kg ha-1) under fully irrigated (FIT), limited irrigation (75% FIT), and rainfed conditions on maize (Zea mays L.) yield and various CWP indices were investigated in 2011 and 2012 growing seasons under linear-move sprinkler irrigation in south …

Assessing Climate Change Impacts On Water Balance, Runoff, And Water Quality At The Field Scale For Four Locations In The Heartland, Michael W. Van Liew, Song Feng, T. B. Pathak

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

This study employed the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) to evaluate the impacts of projected future climate change scenarios on water balance, runoff, sediment, total nitrogen (N), and total phosphorus (P) at the field scale for four locations in the Heartland region: Sioux City (Iowa) and Columbus, Mullen, and Harrison (Nebraska). A conventional two-year corn-soybean rotation was assumed to be grown on each field. All fields were simulated identically in terms of topographic and cover/land management conditions. Model inputs for the fields differed in only

three ways: the forcing conditions for existing and future climatic scenarios (SRES A2, A1B, …

Impedance Changes In Biceps Brachii Due To Isometric Contractions And Muscle Fatigue Using Electrical Impedance Myography (Eim), Travis Orth Jan 2013

Impedance Changes In Biceps Brachii Due To Isometric Contractions And Muscle Fatigue Using Electrical Impedance Myography (Eim), Travis Orth

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Electrical impedance myography (EIM) is a non-invasive technique used to evaluate neuromuscular conditions by using a quantitative parameter called impedance (Z). It relies upon the application and measurement of high-frequency, low-intensity electrical current imbedded over a localized muscle to determine its opposition to current flow. In brevity, impedance determines the resistance of muscle fibers due to changes in muscle composition. The objective of this thesis was to establish a relationship between muscles at rest and during isometric contractions at various force levels(25%, 50%, and 100% of maximum voluntary contraction) of the biceps brachii over a multifrequency spectrum. Impedance measurements due …

Climatic effects of newly-formed atmospheric secondary aerosol particles are to a large extent determined by their condensational growth rates. However, all the vapours condensing on atmospheric nanoparticles and growing them to climatically relevant sizes are not identified yet and the effects of particle phase processes on particle growth rates are poorly known. Besides sulfuric acid, organic compounds are known to contribute significantly to atmospheric nanoparticle growth. In this study a particle growth model MABNAG (Model for Acid-Base chemistry in NAnoparticle Growth) was developed to study the effect of salt formation on nanoparticle growth, which has been proposed as a potential …

Positive Matrix Factorization Of Pm2.5 - Eliminating The Effects Of Gas/Particle Partitioning Of Semivolatile Organic Compounds, Mingjie Xie, Kelley Barsanti, Michael P. Hannigan, Steven J. Dutton, Sverre Vedal Jan 2013

Positive Matrix Factorization Of Pm2.5 - Eliminating The Effects Of Gas/Particle Partitioning Of Semivolatile Organic Compounds, Mingjie Xie, Kelley Barsanti, Michael P. Hannigan, Steven J. Dutton, Sverre Vedal

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Gas-phase concentrations of semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) were calculated from gas/particle (G/P) partitioning theory using their measured particle-phase concentrations. The particle-phase data were obtained from an existing filter measurement campaign (27 January 2003-2 October 2005) as a part of the Denver Aerosol Sources and Health (DASH) study, including 970 observations of 71 SVOCs (Xie et al., 2013). In each compound class of SVOCs, the lighter species (e.g. docosane in n-alkanes, fluoranthene in PAHs) had higher total concentrations (gas + particle phase) and lower particle-phase fractions. The total SVOC concentrations were analyzed using positive matrix factorization (PMF). Then the results were …

Analyzing Experimental Data And Model Parameters: Implications For Predictions Of Soa Using Chemical Transport Models, Kelley Barsanti, Annmarie G. Carlton, Serena H. Chung Jan 2013

Analyzing Experimental Data And Model Parameters: Implications For Predictions Of Soa Using Chemical Transport Models, Kelley Barsanti, Annmarie G. Carlton, Serena H. Chung

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Despite critical importance for air quality and climate predictions, accurate representation of secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation remains elusive. An essential addition to the ongoing discussion of improving model predictions is an acknowledgement of the linkages between experimental conditions, parameter optimization and model output, as well as the linkage between empirically-derived partitioning parameters and the physicochemical properties of SOA they represent in models. In this work, a "best available" set of SOA modeling parameters is selected by comparing predicted SOA yields and mass concentrations with observed yields and mass concentrations from a comprehensive list of published smog chamber studies. Evaluated …

Dual-Band Omnidirectional Circularly Polarized Antenna, Adam Narbudowicz, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann Jan 2013

Dual-Band Omnidirectional Circularly Polarized Antenna, Adam Narbudowicz, Xiulong Bao, Max Ammann

Articles

A dual-band omnidirectional circularly polarized antenna is proposed. The antenna comprises back-to-back microstrip patches fed by a coplanar waveguide. A very low frequency ratio of 1.182 has been achieved, which can be easily tuned by adjusting four lumped capacitors incorporated into the antenna. An analysis of the omnidirectional circular polarization mechanism as well the dual band operation is provided and confirmed by numerical and experimental data. Key parameters to tune the resonant frequencies and the axial ratio have been identified. The prototype antenna provides omnidirectional circular polarization in one plane with cross polar isolation better than 12 dB for both …

Thermal Cycling And Thermal Radiation Performances Of Novel Thermal Barrier Coatings, Li Wang Jan 2013

Thermal Cycling And Thermal Radiation Performances Of Novel Thermal Barrier Coatings, Li Wang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) play an important role in protecting the superalloy components from the hot gas stream in gas-turbine engines. Driven by the higher inlet temperature of modern gas turbine engines for higher efficiency and less harmful gas emission, exploration of TBC new materials and thermal radiation effects of TBCs have attracted more attentions recently. In this study, thermochemical compatibility of Gd2Zr2O7 (GZ) and yttria-stabilized-zirconia (YSZ) at 1300 ºC was investigated. Single, double and three ceramic-layered GZ based TBCs were prepared and their thermal cycling properties were performed under different thermal conditions. Thermochemical compatibility investigation showed that YSZ tended …

Pore-To-Continuum Multiscale Modeling Of Two-Phase Flow In Porous Media, Qiang Sheng Jan 2013

Pore-To-Continuum Multiscale Modeling Of Two-Phase Flow In Porous Media, Qiang Sheng

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Abstract Pore-scale network modeling using 3D X-ray computed tomographic images (digital rock technology) has become integral to both research and commercial simulations in recent years. While this technology provides tremendous insight into pore-scale behavior, computational methods for integrating the results into practical, continuum-scale models remain fairly primitive. The general approach is to run pore-scale models and continuum models sequentially, where macroscopic parameters are simulated using the pore-scale models and then used in the continuum models as if they have been obtained from laboratory experiments. While a sequential coupling approach is appealing in some cases, an inability to run the two …

Cavitation In Pharmaceutical Manufacturing And Shipping, Donn Sederstrom Jan 2013

Cavitation In Pharmaceutical Manufacturing And Shipping, Donn Sederstrom

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Therapeutic proteins are used to successfully treat hemophilia, Crohn's Disease, diabetes, and cancer. Recent product recalls have occurred because of sub-visible particle formation resulting from the inherent instability of proteins. It has been suggested that particle formation is associated with late stage processing steps of filling, shipping, and delivery. Previous work at the University of Denver demonstrated that fluid cavitation can generate a large number of sub-visible protein particles in ultra clean formulations, but that mitigation can be achieved with fluid property manipulation. The goal of this research was to (1) assess the risk of cavitation under common pharmaceutical manufacturing …

Biomechanical Comparison Of Lower Limb Unloading Between Common Modalities Of Ankle Foot Orthoses, Andrea Blake Wanamaker Jan 2013

Biomechanical Comparison Of Lower Limb Unloading Between Common Modalities Of Ankle Foot Orthoses, Andrea Blake Wanamaker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Tibial stress fractures and other lower extremity injuries can be treated using an ankle foot orthosis (AFO). AFOs are popular because they allow the patient to ambulate somewhat naturally while reducing weight bearing on the injured limb. Despite their popularity, it is currently unclear how well AFOs reduce lower extremity weight bearing.

The first objective of this investigation was to examine the ability of three commonly used ankle foot orthoses to reduce weight bearing within the lower limb by comparing the ground reaction force measured from a force platform to the force measured from an insole pressure measurement device inside …

Computational Representation Of The Patellofemoral Joint, Abraham Wright Jan 2013

Computational Representation Of The Patellofemoral Joint, Abraham Wright

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Many people suffer from knee pain due to abnormal function of the patellofemoral joint and are not able to enjoy normal activities of daily living. Surgical treatments are available and new methods are being developed by the medical industry. However, computational tools to efficiently evaluate the effects of the intervention on patellofemoral function are lacking.

Therefore, a validated and efficient computational model of the patellofemoral joint was developed. The subject specific finite element model was validated against the patellar kinematics recorded during cadaveric patellofemoral laxity experiments of the natural knee. The development involved a sequential process in which the soft-tissue …

Representing Intersubject Variability With A Statistical Shape And Alignment Model Of The Knee, Chandreshwar Rao Jan 2013

Representing Intersubject Variability With A Statistical Shape And Alignment Model Of The Knee, Chandreshwar Rao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Prior statistical shape models have not considered multiple structures in the knee joint to characterize anatomic variation which are required to investigate joint mechanics further for the successful knee replacement. Accordingly, the study's objective was to develop statistical shape and alignment model (SSAM) to capture intersubject variability and demonstrate the ability to generate realistic instances for use in finite element analysis (FEA). SSAM described the variability in the training set of 20 subjects with a series of modes of variation obtained by performing principal component analysis (PCA). PCA produced modes of variation with the first 3 modes representing 70% and …

In particular, the oscillation of free electrons, when properly driven by electromagnetic waves, would form plasmon-polaritons …

Clarifications Of A Datum Axis Or Centerplane Specifying In Maximum Material Condition Of Geometric Dimensioning And Tolerancing, Cheng Y. Lin, Jennifer G. Michaeli, Mileta Tomovic Jan 2013

Clarifications Of A Datum Axis Or Centerplane Specifying In Maximum Material Condition Of Geometric Dimensioning And Tolerancing, Cheng Y. Lin, Jennifer G. Michaeli, Mileta Tomovic

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Engineering and Engineering Technology students and professionals learning the processes and standards in computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) should learn and understand the methodology of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) to describe the intent and requirements for part and assembly geometries. Correct application of GD&T ensures that the part and assembly geometry defined on the drawing will have the desired form and fit (within limits) and function as intended. One learning difficulty in understanding GD&T is the concept of defining a datum axis or center plane using Maximum Material Condition (MMC). To overcome this difficulty, a new approach …

Kinematic And Dynamic Collision Statistics Of Cloud Droplets From High-Resolution Simulations, Bogdan Rosa, Hossein Parishani, Orlando Ayala, Wojciech W. Grabowski, Lian-Ping Wang

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

We study the dynamic and kinematic collision statistics of cloud droplets for a range of flow Taylor microscale Reynolds numbers (up to 500), using a highly scalable hybrid direct numerical simulation approach. Accurate results of radial relative velocity (RRV) and radial distribution function (RDF) at contact have been obtained by taking advantage of their power-law scaling at short separation distances. Three specific but inter-related questions have been addressed in a systematic manner for geometric collisions of same-size droplets (of radius from 10 to 60 μm) in a typical cloud turbulence (dissipation rate at 400 cm2 s-3. Firstly, …

Engineering Technology Faculty Publications

Automotive manufacturers are experiencing difficulties in hiring highly qualified workers with ability to adopt new technologies fast. This kind of ongoing need for training is slowing innovation. This problem is related to the difficulty in obtaining consistent training resources and services especially with lack of training for advanced manufacturing practices for specialised industry sectors. More and more occupations require degrees higher than secondary education because of the global need for so called ‘knowledge workers’. An example of an interactive learning programme, developed with the support of narrated presentation technology, podcasts and online access has been shown in this paper. Sixty …

The purpose of this research thesis project was to develop a mechanical testing device that could enable us to load articular cartilage with a rolling/sliding motion. This novel device was then used to observe the effect of a rolling motion on the fluid film thickness of different lubricants (motor oil, synovial fluid and Hyaluronic Acid (HA)) to varying loads (1kg, 2,kg, 3kg and 4kg) and speeds (10, 25, 48 and 91 mm/s) applied on the sample fluids for 10 cycles. We were able to examine the effect of different speeds within each load for each of the fluid that was …

A Novel Visual Stimulation Paradigm: Exploiting Individual Primary Visual Cortex Geometry To Boost Steady State Visual Evoked Potentials (Ssvep), Marta Isabel Vanegas Arroyave Jan 2013

A Novel Visual Stimulation Paradigm: Exploiting Individual Primary Visual Cortex Geometry To Boost Steady State Visual Evoked Potentials (Ssvep), Marta Isabel Vanegas Arroyave

Dissertations and Theses

The steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) is an electroencephalographic response to flickering stimuli generated in significant part by activity in primary visual cortex (V1). SSVEP signal-to-noise ratio is generally low for stimuli that are located in the visual periphery, at frequencies higher than 20 Hz, or at low contrast. Because of the typical "cruciform" geometry of V1, large stimuli tend to excite neighboring cortical regions of opposite orientation, likely resulting in electric field cancellation. In Study 1, we explored ways to exploit V1 geometry in order to boost scalp SSVEP amplitude via oscillatory summation, by manipulating flicker-phase offsets among angular …

Design, Product Development And Risk Assessment Of Tin (Sn) Ring Electrodes As A Substitute To Silver-Silver Chloride (Ag Agci) Ring Electrodes For High Definition Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (Hd-Tdcs), Linford Leitch

Dissertations and Theses

The objective of this research thesis is to test the viability of Tin (Sn) ring electrodes as an inexpensive alternative to sintered Silver-Silver Chloride (Ag|AgCl) ring electrodes for High Definition – transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (HD-tDCS). Throughout our initial bench top testing of tin electrodes in combination with a ‘conductive electrode gel’, the passing of a 2mA direct current on agar block showed the formation of white cloud around the anode electrode and a cluster of air bubbles on the cathode. The analysis of pertinent literature indicates that the white milky substance produced during the stimulation at the anode is …

Real-Time Atmospheric Compensation And Surface Temperature Estimates From Satellite Using Neural Networks, Gary Bouton Jan 2013

Real-Time Atmospheric Compensation And Surface Temperature Estimates From Satellite Using Neural Networks, Gary Bouton

Dissertations and Theses

Military satellites are being used to determine potential security threats using accurate high sensitivity measurements from defense satellites. These systems focus much more on sensitivity and Signal/Noise Ratio (SNR) than on multispectral capability. Therefore, these systems are highly vulnerable to thermal absorption and reemission that can affect the thermal signature prior to launch. In particular, there is a need to use additional assets to estimate the atmospheric temperature and water vapor profile so that an estimate of the atmospheric processes can be obtained and a correction developed to improve the thermal detection. In particular, the use of existing meteorological geostationary …
