Application Of Computational Fluid Dynamics Methods To Improve Thermal Hydraulic Code Analysis, Dennis Shannon Sentell, Jr. Jan 2013

Application Of Computational Fluid Dynamics Methods To Improve Thermal Hydraulic Code Analysis, Dennis Shannon Sentell, Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

A computational fluid dynamics code is used to model the primary natural circulation loop of a proposed small modular reactor for comparison to experimental data and best-estimate thermal-hydraulic code results. Recent advances in computational fluid dynamics code modeling capabilities make them attractive alternatives to the current conservative approach of coupled best-estimate thermal hydraulic codes and uncertainty evaluations. The results from a computational fluid dynamics analysis are benchmarked against the experimental test results of a 1:3 length, 1:254 volume, full pressure and full temperature scale small modular reactor during steady-state power operations and during a depressurization transient. A comparative evaluation of …

Evolution Of Microstructure Of Haynes 230 And Inconel 617 Under Mechanical Testing At High Temperatures, Kyle Hrutkay

Theses and Dissertations

Haynes 230 and Inconel 617 are austenitic nickel based superalloys, which are candidate structural materials for next generation high temperature nuclear reactors. High temperature deformation behavior of Haynes 230 and Inconel 617 have been investigated at the microstructural level in order to gain a better understanding of mechanical properties. Tensile tests were performed at strain rates ranging from 10-3-10-5 s-1 at room temperature, 600 °C, 800 °C and 950 °C. Subsequent microstructural analysis, including Scanning Electron Microscopy, Transmission Electron Microscopy, Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, and X-Ray Diffraction were used to relate the microstructural evolution at high temperatures to that of room …

Electromagnetic Modeling Of Gan Varactor Microwave Switches, Yi-Hsuan Yang Jan 2013

Electromagnetic Modeling Of Gan Varactor Microwave Switches, Yi-Hsuan Yang

Theses and Dissertations

Microwave switches are important components which have been widely used in many microwave systems, such as electronic products, satellites communications, antennas, and radars etc. Traditionally, microwave switches are fabricated using pin diodes or MEMS, Si MOSFETs or GaAs HEMTs. These devices, due to the material limitations are suffering from a low breakdown voltage and are unable to handle high power. III-Nitride based varactor microwave switches provide opportunities for high power microwave devices, due to highly conducting 2D electron gas in the channel and high breakdown electric field.

Designing microwave switches typically involves modeling and simulation using tools such as MATLAB, …

Aquaponics: A Sustainable Food Production System That Provides Research Projects For Undergraduate Engineering Students, Richard W. Marklin Jr., Margaret Mathison, Brooke K. Mayer, Mark L. Nagurka, Vikram Cariapa, Jay Schabelski Jan 2013

Aquaponics: A Sustainable Food Production System That Provides Research Projects For Undergraduate Engineering Students, Richard W. Marklin Jr., Margaret Mathison, Brooke K. Mayer, Mark L. Nagurka, Vikram Cariapa, Jay Schabelski

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Aquaponics is a closed-loop, recirculating water system in which plants and fish grow together mutualistically. Aquaponics resembles a natural river or lake basin in which fish waste serves as nutrients for the plants, which in turn clean the water for the fish. Tilapia and salad greens or herbs are common fish and plants grown in an aquaponics system. The external inputs to an aquaponics system are fish food, minimal amount of water, and energy for lighting and heating the water for the fish and plants.

Aquaponics is a sustainable, efficient system to raise fish protein and vegetables for human consumption. …

The class met two days a week for 75 min per day. Students were taught to draw simple objects such as electrical boxes, with orthographic, …

Coupling Numerical Simulation And Pattern Recognition To Model Production And Evaluate Carbon Dioxide Injection In Shale Gas Reservoir, Amirmasoud Kalantari-Dahaghi Jan 2013

Coupling Numerical Simulation And Pattern Recognition To Model Production And Evaluate Carbon Dioxide Injection In Shale Gas Reservoir, Amirmasoud Kalantari-Dahaghi

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Massive multi-cluster, multi-stage hydraulic fractures have significantly increased the complexity of the flow behavior in shale. This has translated into multiple challenges in the modeling of production from shale wells.

Most commonly used numerical techniques for modeling production from shale wells are Explicit Hydraulic Fracture (EHF) and Stimulated Reservoir Volume (SRV). Model setup for the EHF technique is long and laborious and its implementation is computationally expensive, such that it becomes impractical to model beyond a single pad. On the other hand, identifying the extent and conductivity of SRV is a challenging proposition. SRV technique is commonly used to simplify …

Cardinal Raúl Silva Henríquez Bridge During The 2010 Chile Earthquake, Zuocai Wang, Genda Chen, W. Phillip Yen, Ian G. Buckle

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents a case study of the Cardinal Raúl Silva Henríquez Bridge, which experienced significant damage during an earthquake that occurred in Chile on February 27, 2010. Supported by reinforced concrete and steel columns of varying heights, the superstructure of the bridge consisted of 22 steel-girder spans, with one intermediate expansion joint located at the middle of the bridge. At each end of the bridge, the bottom flanges of the girders were welded to their bearing steel plates, which were embedded and anchored into the bridge abutment. Two, three-dimensional, finite element models (global versus local) with beam and solid …

Metacom: Automated Data Processing And Analysis Of Metagenomic Community Sequences, Cody A. Tramp, Charles D. Miller

Browse all Datasets

Advances in next generation sequencing technology have allowed metagenomic researchers to study the composition of bacterial communities through analysis of the vast numbers of sequence reads that these technologies generate. It is not feasible to analyze and interpret this large amount of data manually and individual research groups must create automated scripts and programs to analyze this data. Here, we present MetaCom, a program that offers a common set of analysis and organizational tools that can be used by research groups in the analysis of environmental samples. MetaCom is an open-source software tool that can process next generation sequencing output, …
