Some coastal nesting species, including sea turtle species, have experienced diminished habitat from SLR. In an effort to assess the economic and ecosystem service loss to coastal areas with respect to sea turtles Contingent Valuation Method (CVM) and Habitat Equivalency Analysis (HEA) were used. The CVM was used to measure the economic impacts of SLR on sea turtles. Open-ended and dichotomous choice CVM was used to obtain the willingness to pay (WTP) values of Florida residents to implement certain mitigation strategies which …

Evaluating The Use Of Recycled Concrete Aggregate In French Drain Applications, Zachary Behring Jan 2013

Evaluating The Use Of Recycled Concrete Aggregate In French Drain Applications, Zachary Behring

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Recycled concrete aggregate (RCA) is often used as a replacement of virgin aggregate in road foundations (base course), embankments, hot-mix asphalt, and Portland cement concrete. However, the use of RCA in exfiltration drainage systems, such as French drains, is currently prohibited in many states of the U.S. The French drain system collects water runoff from the road pavement and transfers to slotted pipes underground and then filters through coarse aggregate and geotextile. The primary concerns with using RCA as a drainage media are the fines content and the precipitation of calcium carbonate to cause a reducing in filter fabric permittivity. …

Development Of A Chemical Kinetic Model For A Fluidized-Bed Sewage Sludge Gasifier, Wyatt Champion Jan 2013

Development Of A Chemical Kinetic Model For A Fluidized-Bed Sewage Sludge Gasifier, Wyatt Champion

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As the need for both sustainable energy production and waste minimization increases, the gasification of biomass becomes an increasingly important process. What would otherwise be considered waste can now be used as fuel, and the benefits of volume reduction through gasification are seen in the increased lifespan of landfills. Fluidized-bed gasification is a particularly robust technology, and allows for the conversion of most types of waste biomass. Within a fluidized-bed gasifier, thermal medium (sand) is heated to operating temperature (around 1350°F) and begins to fluidize due to the rapid expansion of air entering the bottom of the reactor. This fluidization …

Ultrafast Laser Material Processing For Photonic Applications, Mark Ramme Jan 2013

Ultrafast Laser Material Processing For Photonic Applications, Mark Ramme

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Femtosecond Laser Direct Writing (FLDW) is a viable technique for producing photonic devices in bulk materials. This novel manufacturing technique is versatile due to its full 3D fabrication capability. Typically, the only requirement for this process is that the base material must be transparent to the laser wavelength. The modification process itself is based on non-linear energy absorption of laser light within the focal volume of the incident beam. This thesis addresses the feasibility of this technique for introducing photonic structures into novel dielectric materials. Additionally, this work provides a deeper understanding of the lightmatter interaction mechanism occurring at high …

Virtual Interactions With Real-Agents For Sustainable Natural Resource Management, Tyler Pierce Jan 2013

Virtual Interactions With Real-Agents For Sustainable Natural Resource Management, Tyler Pierce

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Common pool resource management systems are complex to manage due to the absence of a clear understanding of the effects of users’ behavioral characteristics. Non-cooperative decision making based on individual rationality (as opposed to group rationality) and a tendency to free ride due to lack of trust and information about other users’ behavior creates externalities and can lead to tragedy of the commons without intervention by a regulator. Nevertheless, even regulatory institutions often fail to sustain natural common pool resources in the absence of clear understanding of the responses of multiple heterogeneous decision makers to different regulation schemes. While modeling …

Investigation Of Multiscale Fluid Structure Interaction Modeling Of Flow In Arterial Systems, Sebastian Sotelo Jan 2013

Investigation Of Multiscale Fluid Structure Interaction Modeling Of Flow In Arterial Systems, Sebastian Sotelo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The study of hemodynamic patterns in large blood vessels, such as the ascending aortic artery, brachiocephalic trunk, right carotid artery and right subclavian artery presents the challenging complexity of vessel wall compliance induced by the high levels of shear stress gradients and blood flow pulsatility. Accurate prediction of hemodynamics in such conditions requires a complete Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) analysis that couples the fluid flow behavior throughout the cardiac cycle with the structural response of the vessel walls. This research focuses on the computational study of a Multiscale Fluid-Structure Interaction on the arterial wall by coupling Finite Volumes Method (FVM) …

Current air pollution professionals are familiar with Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) requirements for dispersion modeling to produce predicted concentrations for comparison with appropriate standards. This research examined a method in which the potential near-road concentrations of MSATs were calculated. It was believed that by assessing MSATs in much …

A Compiler-Based Framework For Automatic Extraction Of Program Skeletons For Exascale Hardware/Software Co-Design, Amruth Rudraiah Dakshinamurthy Jan 2013

A Compiler-Based Framework For Automatic Extraction Of Program Skeletons For Exascale Hardware/Software Co-Design, Amruth Rudraiah Dakshinamurthy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The design of high-performance computing architectures requires performance analysis of largescale parallel applications to derive various parameters concerning hardware design and software development. The process of performance analysis and benchmarking an application can be done in several ways with varying degrees of fidelity. One of the most cost-effective ways is to do a coarse-grained study of large-scale parallel applications through the use of program skeletons. The concept of a “program skeleton” that we discuss in this paper is an abstracted program that is derived from a larger program where source code that is determined to be irrelevant is removed for …

Developing A Group Decision Support System (Gdss) For Decision Making Under Uncertainty, Soroush Mokhtari Jan 2013

Developing A Group Decision Support System (Gdss) For Decision Making Under Uncertainty, Soroush Mokhtari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) problems are often associated with tradeoffs between performances of the available alternative solutions under decision making criteria. These problems become more complex when performances are associated with uncertainty. This study proposes a stochastic MCDM procedure that can handle uncertainty in MCDM problems. The proposed method coverts a stochastic MCDM problem into many deterministic ones through a Monte-Carlo (MC) selection. Each deterministic problem is then solved using a range of MCDM methods and the ranking order of the alternatives is established for each deterministic MCDM. The final ranking of the alternatives can be determined based on winning …

Discriminative Dictionary Learning With Spatial Constraints, Muhammad Nazar Khan Jan 2013

Discriminative Dictionary Learning With Spatial Constraints, Muhammad Nazar Khan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, we investigate the use of dictionary learning for discriminative tasks on natural images. Our contributions can be summarized as follows: • We introduce discriminative deviation based learning to achieve principled handling of the reconstruction-discrimination tradeoff that is inherent to discriminative dictionary learning. • Since natural images obey a strong smoothness prior, we show how spatial smoothness constraints can be incorporated into the learning formulation by embedding dictionary learning into Conditional Random Field (CRF) learning. We demonstrate that such smoothness constraints can lead to state-of-the-art performance for pixel-classification tasks. • Finally, we lay down the foundations of super-latent …

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Aerodynamic Unsteadiness In A Gas Turbine Midframe, Matthew Golsen Jan 2013

Experimental And Numerical Investigation Of Aerodynamic Unsteadiness In A Gas Turbine Midframe, Matthew Golsen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

As modern gas turbines implement more and more complex geometry to increase life and efficiency, attention to unsteady aerodynamic behavior becomes more important. Computational optimization schemes are contributing to advanced geometries in order to reduce aerodynamic losses and increase the life of components. These advanced geometries are less representative of cylinder and backward facing steps which have been used as analogous geometries for most aerodynamic unsteadiness research. One region which contains a high degree of flow unsteadiness and a direct influence on engine performance is that of the MidFrame. The MidFrame (or combustor-diffuser system) is the region encompassing the main …

Creep-Fatigue Crack Initiation And Propagation Of A Notched Stainless Steel, Scott Keller Jan 2013

Creep-Fatigue Crack Initiation And Propagation Of A Notched Stainless Steel, Scott Keller

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Premature failures of vital gas turbine components, such as blades and vanes, have been the result of increasing demands of power generation facilities. As power needs fluctuate throughout the day, operators are quickly firing up gas turbines as a means of providing instant power. Traditionally, these engines run at constant operating conditions; however, contemporary operating conditions call for these engines to be applied on an “as necessary” basis. The result of the cyclic startup and shutdown of gas turbines has led to a phenomenon known as creep-fatigue (CF). A coupling of two primary failure mechanisms in gas turbines, CF conditions …
