Online Learning In A Chemical Perceptron, Peter Banda, Christof Teuscher, Matthew R. Lakin Jan 2013

Online Learning In A Chemical Perceptron, Peter Banda, Christof Teuscher, Matthew R. Lakin

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Autonomous learning implemented purely by means of a synthetic chemical system has not been previously realized. Learning promotes reusability and minimizes the system design to simple input-output specification. In this article we introduce a chemical perceptron, the first full-featured implementation of a perceptron in an artificial (simulated) chemistry. A perceptron is the simplest system capable of learning, inspired by the functioning of a biological neuron. Our artificial chemistry is deterministic and discrete-time, and follows Michaelis-Menten kinetics. We present two models, the weight-loop perceptron and the weight-race perceptron, which represent two possible strategies for a chemical implementation of linear integration and …

Gap Acceptance Parameters For Hcm 2010 Roundabout Capacity Model Applications In Italy, A. Gazzarri, Michael T. Martello, Antonio Pratelli, Reginald R. Souleyrette

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper deals with the field data observation and successive application of estimation procedures in order to estimate follow-up headway and critical headway at roundabouts. Average follow-up headway and average critical headway are two key parameters in the new roundabout capacity model presented in the 2010 edition of the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM). The HCM 2010 capacity model was developed as an exponential regression model with parameter estimates based on gap acceptance theory. Gap acceptance models are strongly affected by driver behaviour and local habits. Follow-up headways can be field measured, while critical headway cannot be obtained directly. The paper …

Feature Extraction Through Median-Split Algorithm Segmentation For Melanoma Detection, Venkata Sai Narasimha Kaushik Ghantasala

Masters Theses

""Detection of melanoma remains an empirical clinical science. New tools for automatic discrimination of melanoma from benign lesions in digitized dermoscopy images may allow an improvement in early detection of melanoma. This research implements a fast version of the median split algorithm in an open source format and applied to four-color splitting of the lesion area to capture the architectural disorder apparent in melanoma colors. This version of the median split algorithm splits colors along the color axis with maximum range". For a dermoscopy set of 888 images, K-means clustering algorithm is compared with a median split algorithm to find …

Comparison Of Square Root Of Time Approach And Statistical Approach To Minimize Subjectivity In The Determination Of Minimum In-Situ Stress, Soumitra Bhaskar Nande Jan 2013

Comparison Of Square Root Of Time Approach And Statistical Approach To Minimize Subjectivity In The Determination Of Minimum In-Situ Stress, Soumitra Bhaskar Nande

Masters Theses

"A formation's minimum in-situ stress is an important parameter to determine for hydraulic fracturing. While minimum in-situ stress, and its orientation, can be measured from triaxial tests on core, it is more common to measure it as closure stress, by performing pressure testing of wells in the field. Closure stress is considered equal to, or a good approximation of the minimum in-situ stress for most cases. The analytical methods applied to such pressure testing include the square root of time plot, G function plot and the G-dP/dG plot. These plots require the engineer to fit tangent lines to the data, …

Synthetic Aperture Radar-Based Techniques And Reconfigurable Antenna Design For Microwave Imaging Of Layered Structures, Mojtaba Fallahpour Jan 2013

Synthetic Aperture Radar-Based Techniques And Reconfigurable Antenna Design For Microwave Imaging Of Layered Structures, Mojtaba Fallahpour

Doctoral Dissertations

"In the past several decades, a number of microwave imaging techniques have been developed for detecting embedded objects (targets) in a homogeneous media. New applications such as nondestructive testing of layered composite structures, through-wall and medical imaging require more advanced imaging systems and image reconstruction algorithms (post-processing) suitable for imaging inhomogeneous (i.e., layered) media. Currently-available imaging algorithms are not always robust, easy to implement, and fast. Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) techniques are some of the more prominent approaches for image reconstruction when considering low loss and homogeneous media. To address limitations of SAR imaging, when interested in imaging an embedded …

A New Method For Failure Modes And Effects Analysis And Its Application In A Hydrokinetic Turbine System, Liang Xie Jan 2013

A New Method For Failure Modes And Effects Analysis And Its Application In A Hydrokinetic Turbine System, Liang Xie

Masters Theses

"The traditional failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA) is a conceptual design methodology for dealing with potential failures. FMEA uses the risk priority number (RPN), which is the product of three ranked factors to prioritize risks of different failure modes. The three factors are occurrence, severity, and detection. However, the RPN may not be able to provide consistent evaluation of risks for the following reasons: the RPN has a high degree of subjectivity, it is difficult to compare different RPNs, and possible failures may be overlooked in the traditional FMEA method. The objective of this research is to develop a …

An Evaluation Of De-Embedding Techniques For Tsvs, Nicholas Garrett Erickson Jan 2013

An Evaluation Of De-Embedding Techniques For Tsvs, Nicholas Garrett Erickson

Masters Theses

"One of the most important aspects of modern electronic designs is device measurement and characterization. Without device measurement and characterization, the functionality of end designs cannot be guaranteed. At the silicon level (on-wafer), extracting the electrical performance of devices and structures has grown increasingly more complex with the continual shrink of feature sizes. Compared to the overall measurement setup (VNA, cables, probes, interposers, etc.), the ultra small size of on-wafer structures leads to their electrical performance being easily overshadowed by other, larger fixtures. Thus, many scientists and engineers have worked to devise ever more accurate calibration and de-embedding techniques for …

Part Height Control Of Laser Metal Additive Manufacturing Process, Yu-Herng Pan Jan 2013

Part Height Control Of Laser Metal Additive Manufacturing Process, Yu-Herng Pan

Masters Theses

"Laser Metal Deposition (LMD) has been used to not only make but also repair damaged parts in a layer-by-layer fashion. Parts made in this manner may produce less waste than those made through conventional machining processes. However, a common issue of LMD involves controlling the deposition's layer thickness. Accuracy is important, and as it increases, both the time required to produce the part and the material wasted during the material removal process (e.g., milling, lathe) decrease. The deposition rate is affected by multiple parameters, such as the powder feed rate, laser input power, axis feed rate, material type, and part …

Fabry-Perot Interferometer Based Co₂ Sensor Using Ionic-Liquid, Mujahid Abdul Jan 2013

Fabry-Perot Interferometer Based Co₂ Sensor Using Ionic-Liquid, Mujahid Abdul

Masters Theses

"Anthropogenic greenhouse gas emission has become an eminent problem today especially CO₂ gas emission is of major importance. Statistics show that CO₂ concentration is consistently increasing in atmosphere every year. Having cognizance of this problem, better CO₂ absorbents, ionic liquids, has been suggested through this thesis. To prove Ionic liquid's efficiency, a unique sensor was developed by a sophisticated fabrication using Femto-second (fs) laser. Sensor is built to work as an extrinsic Fabry-Perot Interferometer (EFPI) to sense CO₂. EFPI sensor consists of a glass tube fused between two single mode fibers, and a miniature hole is fabricated in the tube …

Low Strain Rate Studies Of Alumina Epoxy Composites Using Piezospectroscopy, Ashley Jones Jan 2013

Low Strain Rate Studies Of Alumina Epoxy Composites Using Piezospectroscopy, Ashley Jones

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Particulate composites are widely used in many aerospace and military applications as energetic materials, armor materials or coatings and their behavior under dynamic loads have gained increasing significance. The addition of modifiers such as alumina nanoparticles generally facilitates the improvement of the mechanical strength to density ratio due to high specific area and particle rigidity. This allows for sufficient particlematrix bonding and therefore improved stiffness and load transfer in the composite. Photo-luminescent α-alumina nanoparticles when embedded in an epoxy matrix allow for the added benefit of in situ measurements at low strain rates to provide stress-sensitive information using the particle …

Electrohydrodynamic Manipulation Of Liquid Droplet Emulsions In A Microfluidic Channel, Jonathan Wehking Jan 2013

Electrohydrodynamic Manipulation Of Liquid Droplet Emulsions In A Microfluidic Channel, Jonathan Wehking

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This work specifically aims to provide a fundamental framework, with some experimental validation, for understanding droplet emulsion dynamics in a microfluidic channel with an applied electric field. Electrification of fluids can result in several different modes of electrohydrodynamics (EHD). Several studies to date have provided theoretical, experimental, and numerical results for stationary droplet deformations and some flowing droplet configurations, but none have reported a method by which droplets of different diameters can be separated, binned and routed through the use of electric fields. It is therefore the goal of this work to fill that void and report a comprehensive understanding …

Discrete MnAs nanoparticles that adopt different structures at room temperature (type-A, α-structure and type-B, β-structure) have been prepared by the solution-phase arrested precipitation method. Atomic pair distribution and Rietveld refinement were employed on synchrotron data to explore the structural transitions of the bulk and nanoparticle samples, and these results were compared to AC magnetic susceptibility measurements of the samples. The …

Analysis Of Fatal And Nonfatal Accidents Involving Earthmoving Equipment Operators And On-Foot Workers, Esref Emrah Kazan Jan 2013

Analysis Of Fatal And Nonfatal Accidents Involving Earthmoving Equipment Operators And On-Foot Workers, Esref Emrah Kazan

Wayne State University Dissertations

In view of the limitations of univariate statistics for studying construction accidents, a multivariate approach was undertaken using crosstabulation analysis and logistic regression.

Heavy construction equipment accidents related data for four type of equipment; backhoe, bulldozer, excavator and scraper were incorporated in the study using categorical variables. Degree of injury indicating the severity of accident outcome (fatal vs. nonfatal) was selected as the dependent variable, and a variety of factors potentially affecting the outcome comprised the independent variables. Cross tabulation results enabled the understanding and evaluation of associations between the research variables, while logistic regression yielded predictive models that helped …

Fpga Implementation Of Qr Decomposition For Mimo-Ofdm Using Four Cordic Cores, Bing Han, Zengli Yang, Yahong Rosa Zheng Jan 2013

Fpga Implementation Of Qr Decomposition For Mimo-Ofdm Using Four Cordic Cores, Bing Han, Zengli Yang, Yahong Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A low-resource implementation of QR decomposition (QRD) is proposed for MIMO-OFDM systems that employ turbo MMSE-IC (Minimum mean square error interference cancellation) detector. The proposed implementation uses only four CORDIC cores for QR decomposition of complex-valued matrices while existing systolic array architecture requires 15 to 38 CORDIC cores to achieve similar throughput. For 4-by-4 MIMO with 1024 subcarrier OFDM, the turbo MMSE-IC requires 1024 QRD of 4-by-4 complex matrices followed by back substitution. Each matrix QRD is accompanied by rotations of four vectors for the second and subsequent turbo iterations. The proposed architecture implements the multiple vector rotation by multipliers …

How Many Antennas Does A Cooperative Jammer Need For Achieving The Degrees Of Freedom Of Multiple Antenna Gaussian Channels In The Presence Of An Eavesdropper?, Mohamed Nafea, Aylin Yener

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this work, multiple antenna Gaussian wiretap channels with a multiantenna cooperative jammer are considered. In particular, the focus is on identifying the spatial resources needed at the cooperative jammer in order to achieve a secure degree of freedom (s.d.o.f.) for the channel in question equal to the degrees of freedom (d.o.f.). In order to accomplish this goal, the cooperative jammer sets out to send correlated jamming signals. Simultaneously, the legitimate transmitter chooses a precoder that perfectly aligns its information signals over the jamming ones at the eavesdropper. Both terminals use structured signaling, i.e., discrete constellations. The proposed approach is …

Occurrence Of Antimicrobials And Antimicrobial Resistance Genes In Beef Cattle Storage Ponds And Swine Treatment Lagoons, Yuping Zhang, Chiqian Zhang, David B. Parker, Daniel D. Snow, Zhi Zhou, Xu Li

Nebraska Water Center: Faculty Publications

Livestock manure treatment and storage structures are potential environmental sources of antimicrobials and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs). In this study, the occurrence of antimicrobials and ARGs was investigated in the water and the sludge compartments of beef cattle storage ponds and swine lagoons. Analysis was focused on two families of antimicrobials (sulfonamide and tetracycline) and the corresponding ARGs (sul1, sul2, tetO, tetQ and tetX). Results showed that the pseudo-partitioning coefficients of tetracyclines were higher than those of sulfonamides, suggesting different distributions of these two classes of antimicrobials between water and sludge. The ARGs tested were …

Distributed Beamforming With Imperfect Phase Synchronization For Cognitive Radio Networks, Andrew Minturn, Deepraj Vernekar, Yaoqing Lamar Yang, Hamid Sharif

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications

In this paper, we present the analysis and simulation evaluation of a cognitive radio network employing a distributed beamforming technique with imperfect phase synchronization in the presence of a primary receiver. Our system model consists of a group of cognitive transmitters, each with an ideal isotropic antenna and equal transmit power, communicating with a secondary receiver in the farfield. The objective of the network of cognitive transmitters is to optimize its beampattern in the direction of the secondary receiver while minimizing the beampattern in the direction of the primary receiver to a certain threshold. The phases of the transmitted signals …

Method And System For Scatter Correction In X-Ray Imaging, X. Wu, J. Hsieh, P. Sainath, Xin Liu

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Approaches for deriving scatter information using inverse tracking of scattered X-rays is disclosed. In certain embodiments scattered rays are tracked from respective locations on a detector to a source of the X-ray radiation, as opposed to tracking schemes that proceed from the source to the detector. In one such approach, the inverse tracking is implemented using a density integrated volume that reduces the integration steps performed.

Compressibility Effects On The Non-Linear Receptivity Of Boundary Layers To Dielectric Barrier Discharges, Marie F.C. Denison Jan 2013

Compressibility Effects On The Non-Linear Receptivity Of Boundary Layers To Dielectric Barrier Discharges, Marie F.C. Denison

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

The reduction of drag and aerodynamic heating caused by boundary layer transition is of central interest for the development of hypersonic vehicles. Receptivity to flow perturbation in the form of Tollmien-Schlichting (TS) wave growth often determines the first stage of the transition process, which can be delayed by depositing specific excitations into the boundary layer. Weakly ionized Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) actuators are being investigated as possible sources of such excitations, but little is known today about their interaction with high-speed flows. In this framework, the first part of the thesis is dedicated to a receptivity study of laminar compressible …

Rotordynamic Performance Of A Rotor Supported By Three Pad Hybird Foil Bearings With Controlled Air Injection, Sandesh Gudemane Jan 2013

Rotordynamic Performance Of A Rotor Supported By Three Pad Hybird Foil Bearings With Controlled Air Injection, Sandesh Gudemane

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Air Foil Bearings have found their place in the commercial applications of turbo machinery. They are cleaner and more reliable at high speeds than their conventional counterparts (Rolling Element Bearings). Low drag friction and apparently no contact during the operation results in a better service life and superior rotor-dynamic performance of the air foil bearings (AFBs). With these advantages AFB has proved to be a suitable option for oil-free turbo-machinery. Further development in AFBs suggest that pressurizing these bearings externally results in remarkably better load carrying capacity, heat dissipation and a more stable rotor. These externally air pressurized bearings which …

Evaluation Of Surface Transportation Funding Alternatives Using Criteria System Established Through A Delphi Survey Of Texas Transportation Experts, Sasanka Bhushan Pulipati Jan 2013

Evaluation Of Surface Transportation Funding Alternatives Using Criteria System Established Through A Delphi Survey Of Texas Transportation Experts, Sasanka Bhushan Pulipati

Civil Engineering Dissertations - Archive

For more than a decade, transportation officials have been concerned that, at current levels, the fuel tax, the primary funding source of surface transportation in the United States, would not provide enough revenue to satisfy the ever rising transportation needs. Recent studies have evaluated alternative funding strategies at the national and state levels. In this dissertation, the author improves this evaluation procedure by developing a multi-criteria evaluation of different funding options for implementation in Texas using a technique called PROMETHEE. This evaluation uses a new criteria system established through his Delphi survey of Texas-based experts who are experienced in transportation …

Financial Forecasting Using The Kolmogorov-Feller Equation, Jonathan Blackledge, Marc Lamphiere, Kieran Murphy, Shaun Overton Jan 2013

Financial Forecasting Using The Kolmogorov-Feller Equation, Jonathan Blackledge, Marc Lamphiere, Kieran Murphy, Shaun Overton

Articles

An approach to analysing a financial time series using the Kolmogorov-Feller Equation is considered, in particular, the Generalised Kolmogorov-Feller Equation (GKFE) subject to variations in the Stochastic Volatility. Using the Mittag-Leffler memory function, we derive an expression for the Impulse Response Function associated with a short time window of data which is then used to derive an algorithm for computing a new index using a standard moving window process. It is shown that application of this index to financial time series, subject to a low volatility condition, correlates with the start, direction and end of a trend depending on the …
