Exergetic Analysis Of Hydrogen Combustion Involving Electronically Excited Species, Devon Alan Washington Jan 2013

Exergetic Analysis Of Hydrogen Combustion Involving Electronically Excited Species, Devon Alan Washington

Wayne State University Dissertations

Plasma-assisted combustion (PAC) is a growing field of research that involves using nonthermal plasma (NTP) to enhance combustion. PAC research involves modeling reaction mechanisms and chemical kinetics. Exergy analysis of combustion devices focuses on combustion irreversibility, including mixing, internal heat transfer, and oxidation. This novel research project merges these two branches of research.

The focus of this work is the application of exergy analysis to PAC systems, to analyze the effect introducing NTP has on trends in exergy destruction associated with oxidation during hydrogen combustion. This was accomplished by developing a plug flow reactor model using the chemical simulation tool …

Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality: Reports

The Nebraska Department of Environmental Quality (NDEQ) is charged with monitoring, assessing, and to the extent possible, managing the state’s water resources. The purpose of this work is to protect and maintain good quality water and encourage or execute activities to improve poor water quality. Monitoring is done on the over 16,000 miles of flowing rivers and streams, our greater than 148,000 acres of surface water in lakes and reservoirs, and the vast storage of groundwater in Nebraska’s aquifers.

Flow-Induced Voltage Generation Over Monolayer Graphene In The Presence Of Herringbone Grooves, Seung Ho Lee, Young Bok (Abraham) Kang, Wonsuk Jung, Yousung Jung, Soohyun Kim, Hongseok (Moses) Noh Jan 2013

Flow-Induced Voltage Generation Over Monolayer Graphene In The Presence Of Herringbone Grooves, Seung Ho Lee, Young Bok (Abraham) Kang, Wonsuk Jung, Yousung Jung, Soohyun Kim, Hongseok (Moses) Noh

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

While flow-induced voltage over a graphene layer has been reported, its origin remains unclear. In our previous study, we suggested different mechanisms for different experimental configurations: phonon dragging effect for the parallel alignment and an enhanced out-of-plane phonon mode for the perpendicular alignment (Appl. Phys. Lett. 102:063116, 2011). In order to further examine the origin of flow-induced voltage, we introduced a transverse flow component by integrating staggered herringbone grooves in the microchannel. We found that the flow-induced voltage decreased significantly in the presence of herringbone grooves in both parallel and perpendicular alignments. These results support our previous interpretation.

Self-Healing Of Ionomeric Polymers With Carbon Fibers From Medium-Velocity Impact And Resistive Heating, Vishnu Baba Sundaresan, Andrew Morgan, Matt Castellucci Jan 2013

Self-Healing Of Ionomeric Polymers With Carbon Fibers From Medium-Velocity Impact And Resistive Heating, Vishnu Baba Sundaresan, Andrew Morgan, Matt Castellucci

Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering Publications

Self-healing materials science has seen significant advances in the last decade. Recent efforts have demonstrated healing in polymeric materials through chemical reaction, thermal treatment, and ultraviolet irradiation. The existing technology for healing polymeric materials through the aforementioned mechanisms produces an irreversible change in the material and makes it unsuitable for subsequent healing cycles. To overcome these disadvantages, we demonstrate a new composite self-healing material made from an ionomer (Surlyn) and carbon fiber that can sustain damage from medium-velocity impact and heal from the energy of the impact. Furthermore, the carbon fiber embedded in the polymer matrix results in resistive heating …

Pressure Regulating Valve Pilot Characteristics - 2-Way Vs. 3-Way Pilots, Charles M. Burt, Kyle Feist Jan 2013

Pressure Regulating Valve Pilot Characteristics - 2-Way Vs. 3-Way Pilots, Charles M. Burt, Kyle Feist

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

Pressure regulation valves, with 3” – 6” diameters, are commonly found at the entrance to agricultural irrigation blocks and manifolds. These valves are typical of a “hydraulic” design, in which a chamber above a flexible disc/diaphragm is filled or emptied. As the chamber is filled or emptied, the irrigation water passes through a smaller or larger orifice, and the pressure downstream of the valve is lowered, increased, or maintained at a constant target pressure. The flow in/out of the chamber is controlled by a small “pilot valve”. The characteristics of these pilot valves are discussed here, in general terms. Of …

A Scr Model Based On Reactor And Engine Experimental Studies For A Cu-Zeolite Catalyst, Xiaobo Song

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

A NOx reduction efficiency higher than 95% with NH3 slip less than 30 ppm is desirable for heavy-duty diesel (HDD) engines using selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems to meet the US EPA 2010 NOx standard and the 2014-2018 fuel consumption regulation. The SCR performance needs to be improved through experimental and modeling studies. In this research, a high fidelity global kinetic 1-dimensional 2-site SCR model with mass transfer, heat transfer and global reaction mechanisms was developed for a Cu-zeolite catalyst. The model simulates the SCR performance for the engine exhaust conditions with NH3 maldistribution and aging …

Development Of Vapor Deposited Silica Sol-Gel Particles For A Bioactive Materials System To Direct Osteoblast Behavior, Katherine Lynn Snyder

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Tissue engineering and regenerative medicine have emerged in an effort to generate replacement tissues capable of restoring native tissue structure and function, but because of the complexity of biologic system, this has proven to be much harder than originally anticipated. Silica based bioactive glasses are popular as biomaterials because of their ability to enhance osteogenesis and angiogenesis. Sol-gel processing methods are popular in generating these materials because it offers: 1) mild processing conditions; 2) easily controlled structure and composition; 3) the ability to incorporate biological molecules; and 4) inherent biocompatibility. The goal of this work was to develop a bioactive …

Performance-Based Engineering Framework For Earthquake And Fire Following Earthquake, Aerik Carlton Jan 2013

Performance-Based Engineering Framework For Earthquake And Fire Following Earthquake, Aerik Carlton

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The objective for this thesis is to outline a Performance-Based Engineering (PBE) framework to address the multiple hazards of Earthquake (EQ) and subsequent Fire Following Earthquake (FFE). Currently, fire codes for the United States are largely empirical and prescriptive in nature. The reliance on prescriptive requirements makes quantifying sustained damage due to fire difficult. Additionally, the empirical standards have resulted from individual member or individual assembly furnace testing, which have been shown to differ greatly from full structural system behavior. The very nature of fire behavior (ignition, growth, suppression, and spread) is fundamentally difficult to quantify due to the inherent …

Co-Electrophoretic Deposition Of Liquid Metal And Silicon For Lithium-Ion Battery Application, Hanfei Zhang Jan 2013

Co-Electrophoretic Deposition Of Liquid Metal And Silicon For Lithium-Ion Battery Application, Hanfei Zhang

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

A low cost electrophoretic deposition (EPD) process was successfully used for liquid metal thin film deposition with a high depositing rate of 0.6 µ/min. Furthermore, silicon nano-powder and liquid metal were then simultaneously deposited as the negative electrode of lithium-ion battery by a technology called co-EPD. The liquid metal was hoping to act as the matrix for silicon particles during lithium ion insertion and distraction. Half-cell testing was performed using as prepared co-EPD sample. An initial discharge capacity of 1500 mAh/g was reported for nano-silicon and galinstan electrode, although the capacity fading issue of these samples was also observed.

Experimental Investigation Of Regular Fluids And Nanofluids During Flow Boiling In A Single Microchannel At Different Heat Fluxes And Mass Fluxes, Zachary Edel Jan 2013

Experimental Investigation Of Regular Fluids And Nanofluids During Flow Boiling In A Single Microchannel At Different Heat Fluxes And Mass Fluxes, Zachary Edel

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

The dissipation of high heat flux from integrated circuit chips and the maintenance of acceptable junction temperatures in high powered electronics require advanced cooling technologies. One such technology is two-phase cooling in microchannels under confined flow boiling conditions. In macroscale flow boiling bubbles will nucleate on the channel walls, grow, and depart from the surface. In microscale flow boiling bubbles can fill the channel diameter before the liquid drag force has a chance to sweep them off the channel wall. As a confined bubble elongates in a microchannel, it traps thin liquid films between the heated wall and the vapor …

Development Of A 2-Dimensional Finite Volume Model To Assess Hydrodynamic And Microbial Controls On Dnapl Dissolution And Detoxification, Eric S. Wesseldyke Jan 2013

Development Of A 2-Dimensional Finite Volume Model To Assess Hydrodynamic And Microbial Controls On Dnapl Dissolution And Detoxification, Eric S. Wesseldyke

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Tetrachloroethene (PCE) and trichloroethene (TCE) form dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs), which are persistent groundwater contaminants. DNAPL dissolution can be "bioenhanced" via dissolved contaminant biodegradation at the DNAPL-water interface. This research hypothesized that: (1) competitive interactions between different dehalorespiring strains can significantly impact the bioenhancement effect, and extent of PCE dechlorination; and (2) hydrodynamics will affect the outcome of competition and the potential for bioenhancement and detoxification. A two-dimensional coupled flowtransport model was developed, with a DNAPL pool source and multiple microbial species. In the scenario presented, Dehalococcoides mccartyi 195 competes with Desulfuromonas michiganensis for the electron acceptors PCE and …

Development Of A Field Test Method For Total Suspended Solids Analysis, Tian Zhang, John S. Stansbury, Jessica Branigan Jan 2013

Development Of A Field Test Method For Total Suspended Solids Analysis, Tian Zhang, John S. Stansbury, Jessica Branigan

Mid-America Transportation Center: Final Reports and Technical Briefs

Total suspended solids (TSS) are all particles in water that will not pass through a glass fiber filter with a pore size less than 2 μm, including sediments, algae, nutrients, and metals. TSS is an important water quality parameter because of its adverse effects on aquatic species and wildlife. TSS is regulated through the EPA via the NPDES in many states. Since there are no accepted field tests for TSS, projects with TSS regulations must send samples to a laboratory for analysis, which can delay projects for days or weeks. The goal of this research was to develop a rapid, …

Comparison Of Models For Mixture Transport Properties For Numerical Simulations Of Ablative Heat-Shields, Hicham Alkandry, Iain D. Boyd, Alexandre Martin Jan 2013

Comparison Of Models For Mixture Transport Properties For Numerical Simulations Of Ablative Heat-Shields, Hicham Alkandry, Iain D. Boyd, Alexandre Martin

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The goal of this study is to evaluate the effects of different models for calculating the mixture transport properties on flowfield predictions of ablative heat-shields. The Stardust sample return capsule at four different trajectory conditions is used as a test case for this study. In the first part of the study, the results predicted using Wilke's mixing rule with species viscosities calculated using Blottner's curve fits and species thermal conductivities determined using Eucken's relation are compared to the results obtained using Gupta's mixing rule with collision cross-section (CCS) data. The Wilke/Blottner/Eucken model overpredicts the heat transfer to the surface relative …

Investigation Of Turbulent Structure Modification By Momentum Injection Into Turbulent Flow Over A Rough Surface, Mark A. Miller, Huaibao Zhang, Alexandre Martin, Sean C. C. Bailey Jan 2013

Investigation Of Turbulent Structure Modification By Momentum Injection Into Turbulent Flow Over A Rough Surface, Mark A. Miller, Huaibao Zhang, Alexandre Martin, Sean C. C. Bailey

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Utilizing a turbulent channel flow facility, experiments were performed to determine the modifications made to the temporal and spatial structure of turbulence over a sinusoidally rough surface due to momentum injection through the surface. As expected, when compared to the smooth-walled conditions, it was found that the surface roughness increased wall shear stress, decreased the turbulence energy content near the wall, and shifted that energy content to wavelengths on the order of the roughness elements. The addition of momentum injection was found to produce further modifications analogous to increasing the roughness height by increasing the wall shear stress and further …

Modeling Of Chemical Nonequilibrium Effects In A Charring Ablator, Alexandre Martin Jan 2013

Modeling Of Chemical Nonequilibrium Effects In A Charring Ablator, Alexandre Martin

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Charring ablators remain the premium choice for space exploration missions that involve atmospheric re-entry. These type of ablative material are composed of a carbon matrix, usually made of fibers, which is then impregnated with a resin. During re-entry, the high heat flux produced by convective heating causes the material to chemically react. First, the resin pyrolyzes, and is vaporized into a gas that travels through the material, and is eventually ejected at the surface. Since the composition of the gas at the surface greatly affects the heat flux, and therefore the surface temperature, it is thus important to be able …

Energy Assessment Of Smithtown, New York, Allyson Murray, David J. Tonjes Jan 2013

Energy Assessment Of Smithtown, New York, Allyson Murray, David J. Tonjes

Technology & Society Faculty Publications

Energy management and carbon mitigation plans, often created to address global issues, must be implemented locally. Each specific area has its own needs and problems. For this study, we used publicly available data to create an energy assessment for the Town of Smithtown, a municipality of 116,000 people on the north shore of Long Island (New York). We found that motor vehicles consume the largest amount of energy, followed by space heating for both residential and commercial-industrial purposes. Local policies probably can only modestly affect transportation energy use, although federal policies may have significant effects over the next several decades. …

Aerodynamics Of Biplane Wind Turbine Blades, Phillip K. Chiu Jan 2013

Aerodynamics Of Biplane Wind Turbine Blades, Phillip K. Chiu

Link Foundation Energy Fellowship Reports

Little is known about the aerodynamics of biplane wind turbine blades. Even more fundamentally, the two-dimensional aerodynamics of thick biplane airfoils are not well-understood. Supported by the Link Foundation Energy Fellowship, this research has sought to develop a better understanding of these aerodynamics through wind tunnel experiments and computational fluid dynamics. An understanding of biplane aerodynamics is a key step towards the commercial implementation of biplane wind turbine blades. These designs could enable larger turbines designs, ultimately reducing the cost of wind-generated electricity and helping to displace conventional means of electricity generation.
