Automated Behavioral Modeling Of Switching Voltage Regulators, Michael Leonard May 2013

Automated Behavioral Modeling Of Switching Voltage Regulators, Michael Leonard

Electrical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

This work describes the development of a software tool that implements a novel method for automatically generating simulation ready behavioral models for switching circuits with an emphasis on power regulators. The work begins by examining the theory of operation of both linear and switching regulators. Then, the capability of two behavioral modeling languages (Verilog-A and PSPICE ABM) are examined in detail. Next, the languages previously discussed are used to develop and test a model of a commercial regulator (Texas Instruments TPS40305). Finally, the prospect of automating the process is discussed

Improving Bioactivity And The Anti-Bacterial Properties Of Two-Solution Bone Cement Containing Cross-Linked Polymethylmethacrylate (Pmma) Nanospheres (Η-Tsbc), Shailly Jariwala

Biomedical and Chemical Engineering - Dissertations

The high viscosity standard two-solution bone cements (STSBC) developed in our laboratory exhibits several advantages over other commercial powder-liquid cement formulations. However, the high monomer concentration, viscosity, and exothermal temperature are considered a major limitation to the use of this material. Modified two-solution cements containing cross-linked polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) nanospheres (η-TSBC), as part of the polymer phase, were fabricated as the first step for optimization of cement viscosity for application of the material in the treatment of vertebral compression fractures using vertebroplasty (VP) and kyphoplasty (KP). The η-TSBC exhibited reduced viscosity, lower polymerization exotherm, and residual monomer in comparison to STSBC. …

Optimal Solution Based Plasmonic Interfaces For Photocurrent Enhancement In Silicon-On-Insulator Devices, Miriam Israelowitz

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science – Theses

Renewable energy sources are a vital topic to the future of growing industrialized nations. Solar cells are a popular potential technology to become a major source of energy supply, with Silicon (Si) being the most common solar cell semiconductor material. To address the cost of bulk Si, thin film amorphous Silicon (a-Si) solar cell technology was developed. The drawback to using thin film a-Si solar cells is the reduction in power efficiency compared to bulk Si cells. In this work we explore the use of local plasmon resonance and nanoparticle interfaces to enhance photocurrent within thin film Si. Silver (Ag) …

Establishing Mission Requirements Based On Consideration Of Aircraft Operations, Robert A. Mcdonald May 2013

Establishing Mission Requirements Based On Consideration Of Aircraft Operations, Robert A. Mcdonald

Aerospace Engineering

The design requirements for a next-generation commercial aircraft can do much to secure its fate as a success or failure. New aircraft are often designed to meet or surpass the capabilities of an existing aircraft they are intended to replace. However, in the case of unconventional aircraft, this could lead to significant overdesign resulting in nonviable concepts. Instead, a method of analyzing observed aircraft use is presented with the intent of establishing a set of requirements based on replacing aircraft utility instead of capability. Two aircraft in the commercial fleet are used as example cases, and launch customers for each …

Synthesis Of Rhenium And Manganese Pyridazoal Complexes, Jesse Evans May 2013

Synthesis Of Rhenium And Manganese Pyridazoal Complexes, Jesse Evans

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Pyridazines are a heterocyclic aromatic compound containing a characteristic N-N bond that are utilized in many fields, including medicine and electronics. It is this latter field that Dr. Snyder's research group is focused upon. Organometallic compounds are a better conducting material than the current inorganic compounds used in electronics due to better conductance of electricity, lower production cost, and the ability to be formed into thin films. With this in mind, Dr. Snyder's research group has set out to synthesize organometallic compounds for this purpose. Following procedures set forth by Snyder etc, and altered to form an off-metal route, we …

Comparison Of Personality Traits Among Estimators, Project Managers, And The Population, Alan Atalah May 2013

Comparison Of Personality Traits Among Estimators, Project Managers, And The Population, Alan Atalah

Construction Management Faculty Publications

The intuitive hypothesis that Construction Management Professionals (CMP) must have a high level of people skills implies that they should be different than the population at large in terms of people skills. In addition, estimators do not deal with as many people as project managers; therefore, they may not have/need as high of people skills as project managers. This paper tests these hypotheses through the analysis of 47 personality traits of 102 experienced applicants for construction management positions and compares this analysis to the traits of the overall population. The analysis suggested that (1) CMP were significantly different from the …

Cooking Up The Optimal Baking Algorithm, Tony Burand, Michael Tetzlaff, Jacob Smith May 2013

Cooking Up The Optimal Baking Algorithm, Tony Burand, Michael Tetzlaff, Jacob Smith

Math and Computer Science Student Works

Many conventional rectangular baking pans have a problem in that they bake the corners of the batter faster than the rest of the pan. Circular baking pans eliminate this problem, but take up more space in the oven. We propose a solution that given weights for baking consistency and space efficiency based on the importance of each will provide the optimal baking pan shape. We have come up with an algorithm for sorting the pans of area A effectively and formed a model that describes the heat flow into the pan as well as the baking mix itself. The model …

Muller C-Element Based Decoder (Mcd): A Decoder Against Transient Faults, Y. Tang, Chris J. Winstead, C. Jego, E. Boutillon, M. Jezequel

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

This work extends the analysis and application of a digital error correction method called Muller C-element Decoding (MCD), which has been proposed for fault masking in logic circuits comprised of unreliable elements. The proposed technique employs cascaded Muller C-elements and XOR gates to achieve efficient error-correction in the presence of internal upsets. The error-correction analysis of MCD architecture and the investigation of C-element’s robustness are first introduced. We demonstrate that the MCD is able to produce error-correction benefit in a high error-rate of internal faults. Significantly, for a (3,6) short-length LDPC code, when the decoding process is internally error-free the …

Assessment Of An Automotive Driving Simulator To Educate Novice Drivers, John Wagner, Qimin Yao, Kim Alexander, Philip Pidgeon May 2013

Assessment Of An Automotive Driving Simulator To Educate Novice Drivers, John Wagner, Qimin Yao, Kim Alexander, Philip Pidgeon

Publications

Novice drivers are more likely to be involved in vehicle crashes than more experienced drivers. Transportation system simulators, such as aerospace, automotive, and rail, have been used effectively over several decades in support of operator training and research studies. The immersive high-end automotive simulators tend to be large-scale, difficult to move, and relatively cost ineffective for widespread deployment. In contrast, a mobile vehicle training system often features simplistic environments which are not readily accepted by teenagers who evaluate the driving experience as compared to commercial video games. Consequently, a need exists for a low-cost portable automotive training system that provides …

Designing Asynchronous Online Discussion Environments: Recent Progress And Possible Future Directions, Fei Gao, Tianyi Zhang, Teresa Franklin

Visual Communications and Technology Education Faculty Publications

Asynchronous online discussion environments are important platforms to support learning. Research suggests, however, threaded forums, one of the most popular asynchronous discussion environments, do not often foster productive online discussions naturally. This paper explores how certain properties of threaded forums have affected or constrained the quality of discussions, and argues that developing alternative discussion environments is highly needed to offer better support for asynchronous online communication. Using the Productive Discussion Model developed by Gao, Wang & Sun (2009), we analyzed current work on four types of asynchronous discussion environments that have been developed and researched: constrained environments, visualized environments, anchored …

Soft Skills And Software Development: A Reflection From The Software Industry, Faheem Ahmed, Luiz Fernando Capretz, Salah Bouktif, Piers Campbell

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

Psychological theories assert that not everybody is fit for every task, as people have different personality traits and abilities. Often, personality traits are expressed in people’s soft skills. That is, the way people perceive, plan and execute any assigned task is influenced by their set of soft skills. Most of the studies carried out on the human factor in IS concentrate primarily on personality types. Soft skills have been given comparatively little attention by researchers. We review the literature relating to soft skills and the software engineering and information systems domain before describing a study based on 650 job advertisements …

Identification Of And Effects On The Depth Of The Machining Affected Zone In Nickel-Based Superalloys, Boyce Richardson

All Theses

The formation of subsurface damage during machining of nickel-based superalloys is a critical quality concern for the manufacture of gas turbine components. The identification and understanding of this zone are critical to the reduction of destructive testing and scrap costs in an ever changing manufacturing environment. This thesis seeks to provide a novel objective method for identification of the depth of this zone and an empirical model for the effects of machining parameters on this zone. This allows for optimal machining parameters to be used in manufacturing reducing the need for destructive testing, while also reducing manufacturing costs by reducing …

Mitigating Shrinkage Cracking Of Concrete In Bridge Decks Through Internal Curing, Daniel Robert Goad May 2013

Mitigating Shrinkage Cracking Of Concrete In Bridge Decks Through Internal Curing, Daniel Robert Goad

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As the need for durable, long lasting infrastructure increases, new methods and techniques are being explored to prolong the service life of roads and bridges. One method to reduce shrinkage and early age cracking in concrete is internal curing. Internal curing supplies water to concrete, using pre-wetted lightweight aggregate (LWA), as needed throughout the process of hydration to reduce self desiccation, which leads to cracking. This research project analyzed two types of coarse LWA, expanded clay and expanded shale. The mixtures were developed specifically for use in bridge decks and adhered to specifications of the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation …

Flexible wall permeameter and soil index laboratory testing were conducted on the soil used to construct three environmentally controlled compacted clay liners (test pads) to develop a zone of acceptance (placement window). Using the results from the laboratory testing, two acceptance criterions were evaluated, while one …

Creep, Fatigue And Creep-Fatigue Interactions In Modified 9% Cr - 1% Mo (P91) Steels, Valliappa Kalyanasundaram May 2013

Creep, Fatigue And Creep-Fatigue Interactions In Modified 9% Cr - 1% Mo (P91) Steels, Valliappa Kalyanasundaram

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Grade P91 steel, from the class of advanced high-chrome ferritic steels, is one of the preferred materials for many elevated temperature structural components. Creep-fatigue (C-F) interactions, along with oxidation, can accelerate the kinetics of damage accumulation and consequently reduce such components' life. Hence, reliable C-F test data is required for meticulous consideration of C-F interactions and oxidation, which in turn is vital for sound design practices. It is also imperative to develop analytical constitutive models that can simulate and predict material response under various long-term in-service conditions using experimental data from short-term laboratory experiments. Consequently, the major objectives of the …

Return To Traffic Of Full Depth Reclamation Pavements, Robert Benjamin Hill May 2013

Return To Traffic Of Full Depth Reclamation Pavements, Robert Benjamin Hill

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Full-Depth Reclamation (FDR) is a cost-effective rehabilitation treatment for deteriorated pavements. However, when using asphalt emulsion based rehabilitation techniques one of the most challenging aspects of FDR is determining when traffic can be returned to the rehabilitated pavement surface. Since asphalt emulsion mixtures need ample time for curing, they cannot be sealed with a surface layer until the water has evaporated from the rehabilitated layer. It is often not possible to keep the road closed until all of the water has evaporated and the surface layer is placed, therefore, at some point the traffic needs to be returned to the …

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Accurate tracking of facial tissue in thermal infrared imaging is challenging because it is affected not only by positional but also physiological (functional) changes. This paper presents a particle filter tracker driven by a probabilistic template function with both spatial and temporal smoothing components, which is capable of adapting to abrupt positional and physiological changes. The method was tested on tracking facial regions of subjects under varying physiological and environmental conditions in 25 thermal clips. It demonstrated robustness and accuracy, outperforming other strategies. This new method promises improved performance in a number of biomedical applications that involve physiological measurements on …

In Vivo Efficacy Of Chitosan/Interleukin-12 In Controlling Lung Metastasis In 4t1 Breast Cancer Model, Jimmy Vo

Biomedical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses

Cancer immunotherapy has emerged as a leading front in cancer treatment. In contrast to other treatment methods such as radiation and surgery, immunotherapy trains the patient's body to recognize and eliminate tumors, thus preventing reoccurrence of secondary tumors. IL-12 has been shown to display a potent anti-tumor immune response in mice; however, when clinical trials were conducted, it was shown to be toxic and in some cases fatal when administered systemically.1,2 Because of this, local delivery of IL-12 is under investigation. Our lab has shown that when paired with the polymer chitosan, local, intratumoral (i.t.) injections of IL-12 are retained …

Evaluating Mechanical Performance Of Hydrogel-Based Adhesives For Soft Tissue Applications, Nitin Balakrishnan May 2013

Evaluating Mechanical Performance Of Hydrogel-Based Adhesives For Soft Tissue Applications, Nitin Balakrishnan

All Theses

According to the National Center for Health Statistics, an estimated 22 million women have undergone a hysterectomy procedure in the United States. The most common complication during hysterectomies is accidental laceration of the urinary bladder during the surgery with incidence between 0.2-8.3% with the current gold standard wound repair method being sutures. Yet, sutures come with their own limitations in that they necessitate use of a catheter and collection bag during healing due to preventing proper distention of the bladder tissue at normal pressures. The long-term goal of our study is to eliminate the need for suturing by creating a …
