A variety of challenges to the successful assimilation of UASs into the National Airspace System (NAS) currently exist. Technical issues and human factors related hurdles have brought forth a range of research efforts to help to mitigate or resolve these challenges. Regulations and legislation play a significant role in controlling or restricting the use of UASs in the NAS. Currently there appears to be a contraposition of sentiment between the Federal Aviation Administration and Congress on the inclusion of UASs in the NAS. Congress has called for the adoption of UAS operations in the NAS by 2015 yet the FAA …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Developing renewable sources of energy is gaining interest due to limited supplies, rising costs, and environmental impacts of exploiting fossil fuels. Biosolvents such as acetone, butanol, and ethanol are attractive sources of fuel which can aid in replacing our dependence on foreign oil. Butanol is of particular interest due to its ability to directly replace gasoline, thus considered a drop-in-fuel. Biological hydrogen and methane gas are also attractive energy sources that can lower dependence on fossil energy.
This research focused on incorporating DNA sequencing technologies in parallel with fermentation methods for understanding and producing energy. The natural environment provides diverse …
Effects Of Communication Delay And Kinematic Variation In Vehicle Platooning, Megan R. Emmons
Effects Of Communication Delay And Kinematic Variation In Vehicle Platooning, Megan R. Emmons
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Vehicle platoons are efficient, closely-spaced groups of robotically controlled vehicles which travel at high speeds down the road, similar to carts in a train. Within this thesis, a promising control algorithm for vehicle platooning is explored. The control algorithm was previously demonstrated in a sterile setting which significantly reduced the challenges facing full-scale implementation of platoons, most notably loss of shared data and imprecision within the data.
As found within this work, transmission loss and imprecise position, velocity, and acceleration data significantly degraded the control algorithm's performance. Vehicles in the platoon became more closely spaced, changed speeds more frequently, and …

Effective Thermal Conductivity Of Carbon Nanotube-Based Cryogenic Nanofluids, Lucas Samuel Anderson
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Heat removal and management is a concern for any technology that deals with high power, small size, or a lack of convenient thermal transport methods. A potential solution to this heat crisis lies in the field of nanofluids, which consist of colloidal suspensions of nanometer (one billionth of a meter) sized particles within a host fluid. Nanofluids have been of particular interest since their creation due to their exciting, unique, and often times anomalous thermal transport behavior. In many cases, a nanofluid can be custom made to fit a particular need and can act as a flexible cooling method, adapting …
Transparent Antennas For Solar Cell Integration, Tursunjan Yasin
Transparent Antennas For Solar Cell Integration, Tursunjan Yasin
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Transparent patch antennas have a certain level of optical transparency. Highly transparent patch antennas can be integrated with the solar panels of small satellites, which are becoming increasingly important in space exploration. Traditional patch antennas, which are not transparent, are employed on small satellites and compete with solar cells for surface area. But a transparent patch antenna can be placed directly on top of the solar cells and alleviate the issue of limited surface real estate. For such an integration, a high optical transparency of the patch antenna is required from the solar cells’ point of view since the solar …

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This dissertation investigates weighted voting games and three methods of manipulating those games, called splitting, merging, and annexation. The manipulations involve an agent or some agents misrepresenting their identities in anticipation of gaining more power over the outcomes of games. Indeed, in open anonymous environments, manipulation can be easy and cheap to achieve. We provide clear and sufficient discussion on related work and backgrounds to motivate this research topic, which certainly deserves attention. Weighted voting games are among key cooperative games, and the manipulations considered in this dissertation are natural, and have practical applications, that are likely …

Paper recycling in the U.S. is the most successful program of environmental sustainability. Approximately two thirds of consumed paper products were recycled, according to the EPA and AF&PA. However, domestic mills only applied one third of recycled fibers into new products, which is much lower than reported in China (67%). The domestic recycle mills claimed that outdated facilities, poor recycled fiber quality and high manufacturing cost are the major issues. They also said that these recycle mills have been put in a “no-win” position, which threatens the whole recycling loop eventually. A case study about Chinese recycle mills has been …
Magnetic And Structural Properties Of Ni-Mn-Ga Films Produced Via Physical Vapor Tri-Deposition, Christopher Kimo Wilson
Magnetic And Structural Properties Of Ni-Mn-Ga Films Produced Via Physical Vapor Tri-Deposition, Christopher Kimo Wilson
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The structural, thermal, magnetic, and mechanical properties of Ni-Mn-Ga magnetic shape-memory alloys depend strongly on composition. Compositions of sputter deposited films differ from the composition of the single alloy targets from which they originate, where the composition change depends on sputter parameters. Films produced via physical vapor deposition from single alloy targets have sound film-substrate adhesion and film uniformity, however, accurate control of composition is difficult. Tri-sputter deposition from multiple targets allows the flexibility of varying deposition rates and film compositions. A robust procedure with three targets (nickel, nickel-gallium, and manganese) was developed to deposit Ni-Mn-Ga films on silicon with …
Grid Voltage Unbalance And The Integration Of Dfig’S, Joseph Kearney
Grid Voltage Unbalance And The Integration Of Dfig’S, Joseph Kearney
Doctoral
Double-fed induction generators (DFIG’s) became the predominant generator installed for wind generation applications in the mid 1990’s. Issues pertaining to the operation and control of DFIG’s subsequently became apparent, particularly in weak areas of the grid network. Ironically weak areas of the grid tend to be where the average wind speed is high and the usual location of wind farms. One of the issues that emerged was the quality of the voltage in the network at the point of common coupling (PCC) with the DFIG’s. An important issue is the question of voltage unbalance at the PCC. As part of …

Phosphorus Removal From Ebpr Sludge Dewatering Liquors Using Lanthanum Chloride, Aluminum Sulfate And Ferric Chloride, Michael Strileski
Phosphorus Removal From Ebpr Sludge Dewatering Liquors Using Lanthanum Chloride, Aluminum Sulfate And Ferric Chloride, Michael Strileski
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
In wastewater treatment, enhanced biological phosphorus removal (EBPR) is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to chemical precipitation (CP) because of its lower costs and reduced sludge production. However, downstream solids handling processes such as digestion, sludge storage and dewatering promote an undesirable release (i.e. secondary release) of polyphosphate that was stored within EBPR sludge. Released phosphate is recycled to the head of the plant with the liquors of sludge dewatering processes. The concentration of phosphate in recycle streams from EBPR systems can be one to two orders of magnitude higher than the influent phosphorus concentration entering the EBPR system. Plants …

Vehicle Mile Travel (VMT) is a study related to available alternatives for the road
revenue collection system. As per the demand, the existing Gas/Fuel tax based revenue
collection system is not found an appropriate option in the longer run. Due
to existing system constraints like: no eective tax process for vehicles based on alternative
fuel (e.g. electric vehicles), no eective changes in tax due to economical
ination, and more highway expenditure than generated revenue, an alternative revenue
collection mechanism is required. Hence, the objective is to study an alternative
option in detail, which can address the gaps between required revenue …
High-Performance, Scalable Optical Network-On-Chip Architectures, Xianfang Tan
High-Performance, Scalable Optical Network-On-Chip Architectures, Xianfang Tan
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The rapid advance of technology enables a large number of processing cores to be integrated into a single chip which is called a Chip Multiprocessor (CMP) or a Multiprocessor System-on-Chip (MPSoC) design. The on-chip interconnection network, which is the communication infrastructure for these processing cores, plays a central role in a many-core system. With the continuously increasing complexity of many-core systems, traditional metallic wired electronic networks-on-chip (NoC) became a bottleneck because of the unbearable latency in data transmission and extremely high energy consumption on chip. Optical networks-on-chip (ONoC) has been proposed as a promising alternative paradigm for electronic NoC with …

Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
The very high temperature reactor (VHTR) is the latest generation of high-temperature gas-cooled reactors (HTGR). The VHTR has higher outlet temperatures than a traditional HTGR with outlet temperatures up to 1000 °C. This high outlet temperature permits emissions-free process heat in the form of high-quality steam for high temperature industrial applications. Moreover, the high temperatures of the reactor could potentially be used for hydrogen production from water or high efficiency electrical power production (~50% efficiency of thermal to electrical power conversion).
The VHTR is designed to employ helium as its coolant and uses graphite for its neutron moderator and as …

The conspicuously massive growth in the number of products utilizing capacitive touchscreen technology has raised awareness of the technology. The embedded system used to detect and report finger touches to the host is fairly complex and difficult to verify. An automated verification system is required to systematically test this type of system in a reasonable amount of time. This thesis describes the framework for an automated verification system for embedded capacitive touchscreen systems. The framework includes a Cartesian desktop robot, test instruments, communications bridge, and custom-built test management software. The criteria for selecting a Cartesian desktop robot rather than a …
A New Framework For Flooding Control In Regulated River Systems, Elizabeth Akemi Kanashiro
A New Framework For Flooding Control In Regulated River Systems, Elizabeth Akemi Kanashiro
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents a case study on the application of a dynamic framework for the intelligent control of flooding in the Boise River system in Idaho. This framework couples a robust and numerically efficient hydraulic routing approach with the popular multi-objective, non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm II (NSGA-II). The novelty of this framework is that it allows for controlled flooding when the conveyance capacity of the river system is exceeded or is about to exceed. Controlled flooding is based on weight factors assigned to each reach of the system depending on the amount of damage that would occur should a flood …
Young's Modulus And Volume Porosity Relationships For Additive Manufacturing Applications, M. Barbara Silver-Thorn
Young's Modulus And Volume Porosity Relationships For Additive Manufacturing Applications, M. Barbara Silver-Thorn
Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Recent advancements in additive manufacturing (or rapid prototyping) technologies allow the fabrication of end-use components with defined porous structures. For example, one area of particular interest is the potential to modify the flexibility (bending stiffness) of orthopedic implants through the use of engineered porosity (i.e., design and placement of pores) and subsequent fabrication of the implant using additive manufacturing processes. However, applications of engineered porosity require the ability to accurately predict mechanical properties from knowledge or characterization of the pore structure and the existence of robust equations characterizing the property–porosity relationships. As Young’s modulus can be altered by variations in …

The Ponseti method is a widely accepted and highly successful conservative treatment of pediatric clubfoot involving weekly manipulations and cast applications. Qualitative assessments have indicated the potential success of the technique with cast materials other than standard plaster of Paris. However, guidelines for clubfoot correction based on the mechanical response of these materials have yet to be investigated. The current study sought to characterize and compare the ability of three standard cast materials to maintain the Ponseti-corrected foot position by evaluating cast creep response. A dynamic cast testing device, built to model clubfoot correction, was wrapped in plaster of Paris, …
