A Novel Multiblock Immersed Boundary Method Enabling High Order Large Eddy Simulation Of Pathological And Medical Device Hemodynamics, Anupindi Kameswararao Oct 2013

A Novel Multiblock Immersed Boundary Method Enabling High Order Large Eddy Simulation Of Pathological And Medical Device Hemodynamics, Anupindi Kameswararao

Open Access Dissertations

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations are becoming a reliable tool in understanding disease progression, investigating blood flow patterns and evaluating medical device performance such as stent grafts and mechanical heart valves. Previous studies indicate the presence of highly disturbed, transitional and mildly turbulent flow in healthy and pathological arteries. Accurate simulation of the transitional flow requires high order numerics together with a scale resolving turbulence model such as large eddy simulation (LES). This in turn limits one to use a structured fluid flow solver on which complex, branching arterial domains that are typical in the human blood circulatory system could …

Manifold Learning Based Spectral Unmixing Of Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Data, Jun-Hwa Chi Oct 2013

Manifold Learning Based Spectral Unmixing Of Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Data, Jun-Hwa Chi

Open Access Dissertations

Nonlinear mixing effects inherent in hyperspectral data are not properly represented in linear spectral unmixing models. Although direct nonlinear unmixing models provide capability to capture nonlinear phenomena, they are difficult to formulate and the results are not always generalizable. Manifold learning based spectral unmixing accommodates nonlinearity in the data in the feature extraction stage followed by linear mixing, thereby incorporating some characteristics of nonlinearity while retaining advantages of linear unmixing approaches. Since endmember selection is critical to successful spectral unmixing, it is important to select proper endmembers from the manifold space. However, excessive computational burden hinders development of manifolds for …

This study evaluates the influence that the roadway marking, roadway marking installed in conjunction with the explanatory sign, and an alternative detector marking comprised of the MUTCD marking installed over a one foot by two feet green rectangle, have on cyclist queuing position at actuated, signalized intersections. …

On The Uniqueness And Sensitivity Of Indentation Testing Of Isotropic Materials, J. K. Phadikar, T. A. Bogetti, Anette M. Karlsson Oct 2013

On The Uniqueness And Sensitivity Of Indentation Testing Of Isotropic Materials, J. K. Phadikar, T. A. Bogetti, Anette M. Karlsson

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Instrumented indentation is a popular technique to extract the material properties of small scale structures. The uniqueness and sensitivity to experimental errors determine the practical usefulness of such experiments. Here, a method to identify test techniques that minimizes sensitivity to experimental erros is in indentation experiments developed. The methods are based on considering “shape functions,” which are sets of functions that describe the force–displacement relationship obtained during the indentation test. The concept of condition number is used to investigate the relative reliability of various possible dual indentation techniques. Interestingly, it was found that many dual indentation techniques can be as …

Bayesian Approach For Uncertainty Analysis Of An Urban Storm Water Model And Its Applications To A Heavily Urbanized Watershed, Misgana K. Muleta, Jonathan Mcmillan, Geremew G. Amenu, Steven J. Burian

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The significance of uncertainty analysis (UA) to quantify reliability of model simulations is being recognized. Consequently, literature on parameter and predictive uncertainty assessment of water resources models has been rising. Applications dealing with urban drainage systems are, however, very limited. This study applies formal Bayesian approach for uncertainty analysis of a widely used storm water management model and illustrates the methodology using a highly urbanized watershed in the Los Angeles Basin, California. A flexible likelihood function that accommodates heteroscedasticity, non-normality, and temporal correlation of model residuals has been used for the study along with a Markov-chain Monte Carlo-based sampling scheme. …

Gas Barrier And Mechanical Properties Of Crosslinked Ethylene Vinyl Acetate Nanocomposites, S. A. Ahmad Ramazani, M. Shafiee, Hossein Abedsoltan, A. Shafiee

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In this research, the effects of crosslinking agent and clay content on the morphology, barrier and mechanical properties of ethylene vinyl acetate-organoclay nanocomposites prepared by solution method were studied. Dicumyl peroxide has been used as crosslinking agent. The morphology of the prepared nanocomposites was investigated using wide-angle X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy indicated that the prepared nanocomposites had predominantly intercalated morphologies. The obtained results of permeability tests showed that the permeability of ethylene vinyl acetate films dramatically decreases with addition of organoclay and dicumyl peroxide. Mechanical tests showed that tensile modulus and …
