A Calibration-And-Error Correction Method For Improved Texel (Fused Ladar/Digital Camera) Images, Scott E. Budge

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The fusion of imaging ladar information and digital imagery results in 2.5-D surfaces covered with texture information. Called "texel images," these datasets, when taken from dierent viewpoints, can be combined to create 3-D images of buildings, vehicles, or other objects. These 3-D images can then be further processed for automatic target recognition, or viewed in a 3-D viewer for tactical planning purposes. This paper presents a procedure for calibration, error correction, and fusing of ladar and digital camera information from a single hand-held sensor to create accurate texel images. A brief description of a prototype sensor is given, along with …

Computational Design And Characterization Of A Temperature-Sensitive Plasmid Replicon For Gram Positive Thermophiles, Daniel G. Olson, Lee R. Lynd May 2012

Computational Design And Characterization Of A Temperature-Sensitive Plasmid Replicon For Gram Positive Thermophiles, Daniel G. Olson, Lee R. Lynd

Dartmouth Scholarship

Temperature-sensitive (Ts) plasmids are useful tools for genetic engineering, but there are currently none compatible with the gram positive, thermophilic, obligate anaerobe, Clostridium thermocellum. Traditional mutagenesis techniques yield Ts mutants at a low frequency, and therefore requires the development of high-throughput screening protocols, which are also not available for this organism. Recently there has been progress in the development of computer algorithms which can predict Ts mutations. Most plasmids currently used for genetic modification of C. thermocellum are based on the replicon of plasmid pNW33N, which replicates using the RepB replication protein. To address this problem, we set out …

Directed Cell Phone Antenna, Benjamin Carroll May 2012

Directed Cell Phone Antenna, Benjamin Carroll

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The purpose of this project is to design a Yagi-‐Uda antenna with a very high forward directivity. This antenna will be built to the parameters of the Motorola Razr v3 cellular phone. The designed antenna will have a much higher forward gain than the internal antenna in the phone. This means that when the antenna is connected it will have an improved range of reception as long as the antenna is pointing in the direction of a cell tower. The impact of this project is that the signal reception of a popular model of cell phone will be drastically improved. …

On Exploiting Flow Allocation With Rate Adaptation For Green Networking, Jian Tang, Brendan Mumey, Yun Xing, Andy Johnson

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

Network power consumption can be reduced considerably by adapting link data rates to their offered traffic loads. In this paper, we exploit how to leverage rate adaptation for green networking by studying the following flow allocation problem in wired networks: Given a set of candidate paths for each end-to-end communication session, determine how to allocate flow (data traffic) along these paths such that power consumption is minimized, subject to the constraint that the traffic demand of each session is satisfied. According to recent measurement studies, we consider a discrete step increasing function for link power consumption. We address both the …

Development Of A Multiple Contact Haptic Display With Texture-Enhanced Graphics, David Burch May 2012

Development Of A Multiple Contact Haptic Display With Texture-Enhanced Graphics, David Burch

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents work towards the development of a multiple finger, worn, dynamic display device, which utilizes a method of texture encoded information to haptically render graphical images for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. The device interacts directly with the computer screen, using the colors and patterns displayed by the image as a means to encode complex patterns of vibrotactile output, generating the texture feedback to render the image. In turn, the texture feedback was methodically designed to enable parallel processing of certain coarse information, speeding up the exploration of the diagram and improving user performance. The design …

Modeling Yield Surfaces Of Various Structural Shapes, Oudam Meas May 2012

Modeling Yield Surfaces Of Various Structural Shapes, Oudam Meas

Honors Theses

This study investigates the possibility of custom fitting a widely accepted approximate yield surface equation (Ziemian, 2000) to the theoretical yield surfaces of five different structural shapes, which include wide-flange, solid and hollow rectangular, and solid and hollow circular shapes. To achieve this goal, a theoretically “exact” but overly complex representation of the cross section’s yield surface was initially obtained by using fundamental principles of solid mechanics. A weighted regression analysis was performed with the “exact” yield surface data to obtain the specific coefficients of three terms in the approximate yield surface equation. These coefficients were calculated to determine the …

Study Of The Compressive Strength Of Aluminum Curved Elements, Christine M. Shepherd May 2012

Study Of The Compressive Strength Of Aluminum Curved Elements, Christine M. Shepherd

Honors Theses

Currently, the Specification for Aluminum Structures (Aluminum Association, 2010) shows thin-walled aluminum plate sections with radii greater than eight inches have a lower compressive strength capacity than a flat plate with the same width and thickness. This inconsistency with intuition, which suggests any degree of folding a plate should increase its elastic buckling strength, inspired this study. A wide range of curvatures are studied—from a nearly flat plate to semi-circular. To quantify the curvature, a single non-dimensional parameter is used to represent all combinations of width, thickness and radius. Using the finite strip method (CU-FSM), elastic local buckling stresses are …

Optimization Of Feature Selection In A Brain-Computer Interface Switch Based On Event-Related Desynchronization And Synchronization Detected By Eeg, Mason Montgomery May 2012

Optimization Of Feature Selection In A Brain-Computer Interface Switch Based On Event-Related Desynchronization And Synchronization Detected By Eeg, Mason Montgomery

Theses and Dissertations

There are hundreds of thousands of people who could benefit from a Brain-Computer Interface. However, not all are willing to undergo surgery, so an EEG is the prime candidate for use as a BCI. The features of Event-Related Desynchronization and Synchronization could be used for a switch and have been in the past. A new method of feature selection was proposed to optimize classification of active motor movement vs a non-active idle state. The previous method had pre-selected which frequency and electrode to use as electrode C3 at the 20Hz bin. The new method used SPSS statistical software to determine …

Two-Temperature Nonequilibrium Molecular Dynamics Simulation Of Thermal Transport Across Metal-Nonmetal Interfaces, Yan Wang, Xiulin Ruan, Ajit K. Roy May 2012

Two-Temperature Nonequilibrium Molecular Dynamics Simulation Of Thermal Transport Across Metal-Nonmetal Interfaces, Yan Wang, Xiulin Ruan, Ajit K. Roy

Birck and NCN Publications

We have used a two-temperature nonequilibrium molecular dynamics method for predicting interfacial thermal resistance across metal-nonmetal interfaces. This method is an extension of the conventional nonequilibrium molecular dynamics for the dielectric-dielectric interface, where a temperature bias is imposed and the heat current is derived. We have included the electron degree of freedom for the interfacial thermal transport problem by treating the electron-phonon coupling with the two-temperature model. The method is demonstrated on two model systems, that is, silicon-copper interface and carbon-nanotube-copper interface. Temperature nonequilibrium between electrons and phonons in the metal side is quantitatively predicted, and a temperature drop across …

A Method For Exploring Optimization Formulation Space In Conceptual Design, Shane Keawe Curtis May 2012

A Method For Exploring Optimization Formulation Space In Conceptual Design, Shane Keawe Curtis

Theses and Dissertations

Formulation space exploration is a new strategy for multiobjective optimization that facilitates both divergent searching and convergent optimization during the early stages of design. The formulation space is the union of all variable and design objective spaces identified by the designer as being valid and pragmatic problem formulations. By extending a computational search into the formulation space, the solution to an optimization problem is no longer predefined by any single problem formulation, as it is with traditional optimization methods. Instead, a designer is free to change, modify, and update design objectives, variables, and constraints and explore design alternatives without requiring …

Finite Element Analysis Of Transverse Medial Malleolar Fracture Fixation, Ruchi Chande May 2012

Finite Element Analysis Of Transverse Medial Malleolar Fracture Fixation, Ruchi Chande

Theses and Dissertations

Injury to the medial malleolus, the distal end of the tibia and one of the bones comprising the ankle joint, can occur in various loading scenarios. Open reduction/internal fixation (ORIF) to reattach the malleolar fragment to the proximal tibia can be achieved via various devices, however small fragments are particularly challenging to treat. In this study, computational finite element analysis (FEA) was utilized to investigate the fixation of transverse medial malleolar fractures by two cancellous screws or by a new fixation device, the Medial Malleolar Sled™. Cadaveric testing assessed the performance of the two constructs in both tension and torsion. …

Biomedical Matching Gui Development, Nazia Sarang May 2012

Biomedical Matching Gui Development, Nazia Sarang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Biomedical researchers constantly search for new methods to diagnose the extent of joint injuries in live human subjects. In order to achieve this, the researchers need to know the accurate three dimensional kinematic data of bones and joints and to accurately quantify how bones in a joint move relative to one another during dynamic activities. Algorithms have been developed previously to estimate the exact spatial position and movement of the bones. These methods involved generation of digitally reconstructed radiographs (DRR) from a three dimensional CT scan image of human joint with known position and orientation and comparing it with the …

This paper studies the accuracy of the physics-Based via model, specifically when applied to dense via arrays. the physics-Based model uses Greens functions for cylindrical waves in radial waveguides to model the via return current paths and the coupling between vias. the effects of approximations made in this model are studied with regard to four types of modes based on an eigenmode expansion for the radial waveguide. It is found that for the mode conversion in the vicinity of the via, an accurate consideration of Non propagating modes becomes critical with an increasing cavity height. for the interaction between vias …

Brain Controlled Switch, Dimple Bhuta May 2012

Brain Controlled Switch, Dimple Bhuta

Theses and Dissertations

This study aims at designing and implementing a single channel stand-alone Brain-Controlled Switch (BCS) device, which records the electroencephalography (EEG) signals from the scalp using electrodes, amplifies it, eliminates interferences (associated with the EEG signals) and processes the EEG signals to extract and decode temporal signal features to determine user’s intention of regulating an external switch. The design of our “brain-controlled switch” device is implemented using a bio-potential amplifier and a microcontroller. The bio-potential amplifier amplifies the EEG signals to a level sufficient for processing, eliminates interferences and ensures patient safety. The microcontroller (dsPIC30F4013) digitizes the amplified and conditioned analog …

Reduction Of Spectral Phonon Relaxation Times From Suspended To Supported Graphene, Bo Qiu, Xiulin Ruan May 2012

Reduction Of Spectral Phonon Relaxation Times From Suspended To Supported Graphene, Bo Qiu, Xiulin Ruan

Birck and NCN Publications

We have performed molecular dynamics simulations with phonon spectral analysis to predict the mode-wise phonon relaxation times (RT) of suspended and supported graphene at room temperature, and the findings are consistent with recent optical measurements. For acoustic phonons, RTs reduce from up to 50 ps to less than 5 ps when graphene is put on silicon dioxide substrate. Similarly, optical phonon RTs reduce by half when supported. Stronger interfacial bonding is found to result in more RT reduction. Our results provide a fundamental understanding at the spectral phonon property level for the observed thermal conductivity reduction in supported graphene. (C) …

Characterization Of Superhydrophobic Surfaces Fabricated Using Ac-Electrospinning And Random Particle Deposition, Mohamed Samaha Jr. May 2012

Characterization Of Superhydrophobic Surfaces Fabricated Using Ac-Electrospinning And Random Particle Deposition, Mohamed Samaha Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Surfaces with static contact angle greater than 150 degrees are typically classified as superhydrophobic. Such coatings have been inspired by the lotus leaf. As water flows over a superhydrophobic surface, "slip effect" is produced resulting in a reduction in the skin-friction drag exerted on the surface. Slip flow is caused by the entrapment of a layer of air between water and the surface. Superhydrophobicity could be utilized to design surfaces for applications such as energy conservation, noise reduction, laminar-to-turbulent-transition delay, and mixing enhancement. A popular method of manufacturing a superhydrophobic surface is microfabrication in which well-designed microgrooves and/or poles are …
