Development Of Magnetic Fabrics With Tunable Hydrophobicity, Thu Ho
Development Of Magnetic Fabrics With Tunable Hydrophobicity, Thu Ho
Theses and Dissertations
Polystyrene (PS) fiber mats incorporating iron (Fe) particles were fabricated by electrospinning and the hydrophobicity of the resulting magnetic fabrics was investigated with and without an applied magnetic field. The results show that the hydrophobicity (as measured using water droplet contact angle) increases in the presence of a magnetic field and the hysterisis in the advancing/receding contact angle (a measure of the stickiness of the surface) decreases in the presence of a magnetic field. It is also shown that the contact angle and hysterises increase with decreasing fiber diameter and mat thickness.

A Hybrid Battery Model Capable Of Capturing Dynamic Circuit Characteristics And Nonlinear Capacity Effects, Taesic Kim
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
A high-fidelity battery model capable of accurately predicting battery performance is required for proper design and operation of battery-powered systems. However, the existing battery models have at least one of the following drawbacks: 1) requiring intensive computation due to high complexity, 2) not applicable for electrical circuit design and simulation, and 3) not capable of accurately capturing the State of Charge (SOC) and predicting runtime of the battery due to neglecting the nonlinear capacity effects. This thesis proposes a novel hybrid battery model, which takes the advantages of an electrical circuit battery model to accurately predicting the dynamic circuit characteristics …
Flame Synthesis Of Iron Oxide Nanowires For Direct Coal Chemical Looping Combustion, And Tungsten Oxide Nanowires For Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting, Pratap Rao
Link Foundation Energy Fellowship Reports
The applications of metal oxide NWs are limited because conventional synthesis methods cannot achieve the scalable, rapid, controllable and economical synthesis of high-quality metal oxide NWs. In the present work, two novel methods for the flame synthesis of metal oxide NWs are developed, and the resulting nanowires tested for two promising, emerging energy conversion technologies: 1) Direct Coal Chemical Looping Combustion, and 2) Photoelectrochemical watersplitting. These synthesis methods are rapid, atmospheric, controllable and scalable, result in highly pure and crystalline materials, and could greatly extend the applicability of metal oxide nanowires to largescale energy conversion and storage problems.

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
A third-order single-bit CT-ΔΣ modulator for generic biomedical applications is implemented in a 0.15 µm FDSOI CMOS process. The overall power efficiency is attained by employing a single-bit ΔΣ and a subthreshold FDSOI process. The loop-filter coefficients are determined using a systematic design centering approach by accounting for the integrator non-idealities. The single-bit CT-ΔΣ modulator consumes 110 µW power from a 1.5 V power supply when clocked at 6.144 MHz. The simulation results for the modulator exhibit a dynamic range of 94.4 dB and peak SNDR of 92.4 dB for 6 kHz signal bandwidth. The figure of merit (FoM) for …
Dynamics Of Depression Storage During Sprinkler Irrigation And Precipitation Events, Michael B. Mckinney
Dynamics Of Depression Storage During Sprinkler Irrigation And Precipitation Events, Michael B. Mckinney
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Surface depression storage (Ds) is the volume of precipitation excess which is stored by surface microrelief features of soils. The volume of water stored in surface depressions when precipitation rate exceeds infiltration rate reduces the amount of runoff generated. Because Ds is dependent on soil microrelief, land slope, and crop residue, tillage and management practices can have a considerable impact on the magnitude of this value.
When modeling irrigation systems and surface hydrology, depression storage is often treated as a static abstraction, meaning that maximum storage volume must be filled before runoff occurs. However, several researchers have documented …

Department of Computer Electronics and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Micro-electronic industry has been boosting the capability of wireless mobile devices on full-scale. However, battery, as the only power source of most mobile devices, is experiencing a relatively slow development. Therefore, how to optimally utilize the limited battery energy on mobile devices under a predefined performance requirement becomes a critical issue. On the other hand, it is still unclear that how the battery capacity consumption is allocated on different working pattern of a specific video codec under various tempo-spatial scales and parameters, which has posed a design challenge on power management on multimedia communication system. Furthermore, an optimization method is …

Classification for medical diagnosis is an important problem in the field of pattern recognition. We introduce a new method for classification based on repeated analysis of information tailored to small data sets - the Rote Learning Classifier System. using the Wisconsin Breast Cancer study, this method was compared to three other methods of classification: Mahalanobis-Taguchi Systems, Finite State Classifiers, and Neural Networks. It was found that for the given data set, the Rote Learning Classifier System outperformed the other methods of classification. This new algorithm correctly classified over 92% of the data set. © 2012 IEEE.

Efficiency Droop Mitigation And Quantum Efficiency Enhancement For Nitride Light-Emitting Diodes, Xing Li
Theses and Dissertations
In the past decade, GaN-based nitrides have had a considerable impact in solid state lighting and high speed high power devices. InGaN-based LEDs have been widely used for all types of displays in TVs, computers, cell phones, etc. More and more high power LEDs have also been introduced in general lighting market. Once widely used, such LEDs could lead to the decrease of worldwide electrical consumption for lighting by more than 50% and reduce total electricity consumption by > 10%. However, there are still challenges for current state-of-the art InGaN-based LEDs, including ‘efficiency droop’ issues that cause output power quenching at …

Algan/Gan Dual Channel Hfets And Realization Of Gan Devices On Different Substrates, Mo Wu
Theses and Dissertations
GaN-based HFETs demonstrate ubiquitous high power and high frequency performance and attract tremendous research efforts. Even though significant advances have been achieved, there still exist some critical issues needed to be investigated and solved. In particular, high defect densities due to inhomogeneous growth and operation under high power conditions bring many unique problems which are not so critical in the conventional Si and GaAs materials systems. In order to reduce the defect density and heat dissipation of GaN-based HFETs, research work on the realization of GaN-based HFETs on bulk GaN substrate has been carried out and the key problems have …

The imbalance between energy resource availability, demand, and production capacity, coupled with inherent economic and environmental uncertainties make strategic energy resources planning, management, and decision-making a challenging process. In this paper, a descriptive approach has been taken to synthesize the world’s energy portfolio and the global energy balance outlook in order to provide insights into the role of Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) in maintaining “stability” and “balance” of the world’s energy market. This synthesis illustrates that in the absence of stringent policies, i.e., if historical trends of the global energy production and consumption hold into the future, it …
Hybrid Spintronics And Straintronics: An Ultra-Low-Energy Computing Paradigm, Kuntal Roy
Hybrid Spintronics And Straintronics: An Ultra-Low-Energy Computing Paradigm, Kuntal Roy
Theses and Dissertations
The primary obstacle to continued downscaling of charge-based electronic devices in accordance with Moore's law is the excessive energy dissipation that takes place in the device during switching of bits. Unlike charge-based devices, spin-based devices are switched by flipping spins without moving charge in space. Although some energy is still dissipated in flipping spins, it can be considerably less than the energy associated with current flow in charge-based devices. Unfortunately, this advantage will be squandered if the method adopted to switch the spin is so energy-inefficient that the energy dissipated in the switching circuit far exceeds the energy dissipated inside …
Life History Switch Point Plasticy In Response To Pond Drying Alyers Metamorph Allometry And Jumping Performance, Julie Charbonnier
Life History Switch Point Plasticy In Response To Pond Drying Alyers Metamorph Allometry And Jumping Performance, Julie Charbonnier
Theses and Dissertations
Animals with complex life cycles can cope with environmental uncertainty by altering life history switch points through developmental plasticity. Pond drying is an important factor which may alter life history switch points in aquatic organisms. Many amphibians can plastically respond to changes in pond drying by emerging earlier, but few studies have examined the post-metamorphic consequences for performance. To investigate the potential carry-over effects of plasticity to pond drying, we studied the túngara frog, Physalaemus pustulosus, a tropical anuran that breeds in highly ephemeral habitats. We conducted a field study with three different water depth treatments in 60 L mesocosms …

Phase-Resolved Characterization Of Conical Turbulent Premixed Flames: An Investigation Of Forced Blowoff Dynamics, Sayan Biswas
Master's Theses
Flame dynamics of a bluff body stabilized turbulent premixed flame as it approaches lean blowoff is of interest for practical applications. It is also important to understand the flame behavior under harmonic flow perturbations as it may occur due to acoustically unstable operation of compact combustors. In this study, a harmonically excited conical flame was studied to determine its behavior under strong burning and near blowoff conditions. Chemiluminescence imaging was employed using a Photron high speed camera to characterize the phase resolved flame characteristics for a range of excitation frequencies from 50 to 400 Hz in confined and unconfined geometries. …

Linear Precoding For Finite-Alphabet Signaling Over Mimome Wiretap Channels, Yongpeng Wu, Chengshan Xiao, Zhi Ding, Xiqi Gao, Shi Jin
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we investigate the secrecy rate of finite-alphabet communications over multiple-input-multiple-output-multiple-antenna eavesdropper (MIMOME) channels. Traditional precoding designs based on Gaussian input assumption may lead to substantial secrecy rate loss when the Gaussian input is replaced by practical finite-alphabet input. to address this issue, we investigate linear precoding designs to directly maximize the secrecy rate for MIMOME systems under the constraint of finite-alphabet input. by exploiting the theory of Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) analysis and matrix calculus, we first present necessary conditions of the optimal precoding design when instantaneous channel-state information (CSI) of the eavesdropper is known at the transmitter. in …

Data Consistency And Conflict Avoidance In A Multi-User Cax Environment, Robert Aaron Moncur
Theses and Dissertations
This research presents a new method to preserve data consistency in a multi-user CAx environment. The new method includes three types of constraints which work by constraining and controlling both features and users across an entire multi-user CAx platform. The first type of constraint includes locking or reserving features to enable only one user at a time to edit a given feature. The second type of constraint, collaborative feature constraints, allows flexible constraining of each individual feature in a model, and the data that defines it. The third type of constraint, collaborative user constraints, allows the constraining of user permissions …

Integrated Analysis Of Hydrothermal Flow Through Pretreatment, Veronique Archambault-Leger, Xiongjun Shao, Lee R. Lynd
Dartmouth Scholarship
Background:
The impact of hydrothermal flowthrough (FT) pretreatment severity on pretreatment and solubilization performance metrics was evaluated for three milled feedstocks (corn stover, bagasse, and poplar) and two conversion systems (simultaneous saccharification and fermentation using yeast and fungal cellulase, and fermentation by Clostridium thermocellum).
Results:
Compared to batch pretreatment, FT pretreatment consistently resulted in higher XMG recovery, higher removal of non-carbohydrate carbon and higher glucan solubilization by simultaneous saccharification and fermentation (SSF). XMG recovery was above 90% for FT pretreatment below 4.1 severity but decreased at higher severities, particularly for bagasse. Removal of non-carbohydrate carbon during FT pretreatment increased …

Being readily available in most of 802.11 radios, multirate capability appears to be useful as WiFi networks are getting more prevalent and crowded. More specifically, it would be helpful in high-density scenarios because internode distance is short enough to employ high data rates. However, communication at high data rates mandates a large number of hops for a given node pair in a multihop network and thus, can easily be depreciated as per-hop overhead at several layers of network protocol is aggregated over the increased number of hops. This paper presents a novel multihop, multirate adaptation mechanism, called multihop transmission opportunity …
