A Reversibility Analysis Of Encoding Methods For Spiking Neural Networks, Catherine Johnson, S. Roychowdhury, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Mining Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

There is much excitement surrounding the idea of using spiking neural networks (SNNs) as the next generation of function-approximating neural networks. However, with the unique mechanism of communication (neural spikes) between neurons comes the challenge of transferring real-world data into the network to process. Many different encoding methods have been developed for SNNs, most temporal and some spatial. This paper analyzes three of them (Poisson rate encoding, Gaussian receptor fields, and a dual-neuron n-bit representation) and tests to see if the information is fully transformed into the spiking patterns. an oft-neglected consideration in encoding for SNNs is whether or not …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Four different models for effective dielectric properties of biphasic composite containing random or aligned cylindrical inclusions are considered in this paper. These models are based on the Maxwell Garnett (MG) mixing rule. The effects of distribution and orientation of cylindrical inclusions in a composite material is studied. An equivalent averaged material with Debye-like frequency characteristics, suitable for time-domain full-wave numerical electromagnetic simulations is retrieved. This Debye model is derived from the Maxwell Garnett formulation. The numerical model test structure consists of a composite slab inserted in a rectangular waveguide. Simulations are run for the frequency range above the cut-off frequency …

A Novel Characterization Method Of The Radiation Emission For Electromagnetic Compatibility, Ping Li, Lijun Jiang Oct 2011

A Novel Characterization Method Of The Radiation Emission For Electromagnetic Compatibility, Ping Li, Lijun Jiang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Conventionally the radiation emissions from PCB boards, electronic devices and antennas were characterized through the near field (NF)-far field (FF) transformation to find the equivalent sources. In this paper, a new methodology without NF-FF transformation is presented. Based on the uniqueness theorem, it only employs the measured tangential field over a spherical surface to rigorously characterize the outward radiation emission. The dyadic Green's function for the perfect magnetic conductor (PMC) sphere is derived using spherical wave functions. Based on this dyadic Green's function and integral equations, the NF-FF transformation is not necessary any more. To facilitate feasible near field measurements, …

Statistical Estimation Of Root Mean Square Crosstalk In Sfp+ Cable Evaluations, Dazhao Liu, Jue Chen, Zhiping Yang, Jun Fan Oct 2011

Statistical Estimation Of Root Mean Square Crosstalk In Sfp+ Cable Evaluations, Dazhao Liu, Jue Chen, Zhiping Yang, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A rigorous statistical estimation of the root mean square equation is proposed for near-end crosstalk simulation in SFP+ cable evaluations. This method employs the pulse response, the near-end output in the victim pair due to a single-pulse input of one bit long in the aggressor pair. This pulse response can be obtained from vector network analyzer (VNA) measurements. Thus SFP+ cable evaluations can be effectively performed using easier and more accurate frequency-domain measurements, instead of the time-domain ones defined in the specification. © 2011 IEEE.

Skin-Effect Model For Time And Frequency Domain Peec Solver, Giulio Antonini, Albert E. Ruehli

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A challenging issue for the solution of large electromagnetic problems is the efficient modeling of the broadband skin-effect for conducting planes and 3D shapes. the inclusion of such models in an EM solver can be very costly in compute time and memory requirements. Progress has recently been made in the design of skin-effect models. Several properties of a model are desirable for the solution of practical problems such as the broadband frequency domain or the time domain applicability. in this paper, we present a new model which meets some of these challenges and which is suitable for the PEEC solution …

Characterization And Modeling Of A Grid-Connected Photovoltaic System Using A Recurrent Neural Network, Daniel M. Riley, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Photovoltaic (PV) system modeling is used throughout the photovoltaic industry for the prediction of PV system output under a given set of weather conditions. PV system modeling has a wide range of uses including: prepurchase comparisons of PV system components, system health monitoring, and payback (return on investment) times. in order to adequately model a PV system, the system must be characterized to establish the relationship between given weather inputs (e.g., irradiance, spectrum, temperature) and desired system outputs (e.g., AC power, module temperature). Traditional approaches to system characterization involve characterizing and modeling each component in a PV system and forming …

High Frequency Permeability Of Fe-Al-Si Granular Composite Materials, Takanori Tsutaoka, Taisuke Ono, Aiko Tsurunaga, Teruhiro Kasagi, Kenichi Hatakeyama, Marina Koledintseva

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

High-frequency electromagnetic properties of Fe-Al-Si alloy (Sendust) granular composite materials have been studied by measuring their relative complex permeability (μr = μr’ – jμr”) and permittivity (εr = εr’ – j εr”) spectra. The bulk Fe-Al-Si alloy shows metallic electrical conduction, and permeability decreases rapidly with frequency. On the other hand, Sendust powder shows relatively high electrical resistivity. Sendust composite material demonstrates insulating electrical properties up to at least 80 vol.% particle content. Thus the relatively high permeability in the microwave frequency range can be obtained. Frequency dispersion characteristics of …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effects of geometric asymmetry on the electrical performance of multi-channel differential signaling in printed circuit boards are investigated in this paper. the asymmetry, which is the origin of noise coupled through mode conversion, is difficult to control in real channel structures, where a large number of vias and traces are populated. Supported by an efficient parametric simulation tool, this paper presents the effects of the asymmetry on mode conversion and differential mode crosstalk in real multi-channel structures. This extensive parametric study was used to define design guidelines to suppress this noise coupling by adding ground vias in strategic locations. …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Near-field measurements are widely used to indicate the radiation from integrated circuits (IC). to minimize the number of field components measured in a near-field scan, it is necessary to calculate the electric field from magnetic field or vice versa. in this paper, a method based on plane wave spectrum theory is proposed to perform the H to E transformation, and a filtering technique is proposed to address the noise problem in the calculation. a simple active circuit in a 3-D full-wave simulation tool is used to validate this method. This method is useful to reduce the number of field components …

Estimation Of Crosstalk Among Multiple Stripline Traces Crossing A Split By Compressed Sensing, Tao Wang, Yiyu Shi, Songping Wu, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In printed circuit board (PCB) designs, it is common to split power/ground planes into different partitions, which leads to more crosstalk among signal traces that route crossing a split. It is of general interest to develop a crosstalk model for various geometric parameters. However, the long time required to simulate the structure with any given set of geometric parameters renders general modelling approaches such as interpolation inefficient. in this paper, we develop an empirical model based upon the compressed sensing technique to characterize the crosstalk among traces as a function of geometric parameters. a good agreement between the empirical model …

Transient Response Of Long Bubbles In Volatile Organic Compounds, Cheng-Hsing Hsu, Ching-Chuan Chang, Chia-Chuan Kuo, Kuang-Yuan Kung

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

A mass flow controller (MFC) was used to control the injection gas amount into volatile organic compounds (VOCs), each having a different evaporation rate, within straight tubes. As the moving velocities of the air bubbles within the straight tube had changed, a specific transient response occurred. The transient shape was a mushroom bubbles. From the experiment results, as the evaporation rate of VOCs ≧ 1, mushroom bubbles occur as the Reynolds number (Re) of the moving air bubbles reach a certain region. Moreover, the shapes mushroom bubbles were more apparent when volatility of the solvent was higher. As VOCs evaporation …

The Modified Collocation Trefftz Method And Laplacian Decomposition For Solving Two-Dimensional Stokes Problems, Chia-Ming Fan, Hong-Huei Li, Chung-Lun Kuo

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this paper, the two-dimensional Stokes problem is analyzed by the modified collocation Trefftz method (MCTM) and the Laplacian decomposition. The coupled Stokes equations are converted to three Laplace equations by utilizing the Laplacian decomposition and then the boundary-type meshless MCTM is adopted to solve the resultant Laplace equations. The MCTM, free from mesh and numerical quadrature, is derived from the conventional Trefftz method by considering the characteristic length of the domain, which stabilize the numerical scheme and obtain highly accurate results. Besides, the solutions are expressed as the linear combination of T-complete functions and the velocity as well as …

Overcoming The Negative Frequencies - Instantaneous Frequency And Amplitude Estimation Using Osculating Circle Method, Ming-Kuang Hsu, Jiun-Chyuan Sheu, Cesar Hsue

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

There are many methods able to extract the instantaneous frequencies from a time series for practical applications. Gabor's method is one of the most popular and simple methods. For wide band time series, Gabor's method may produce negative frequencies. The limitation of Gabor's method is that, in order to avoid resulting with negative frequencies, it can only be applied to time series with mono component and near zero mean. In this paper, a new method that does not generate negative frequencies, the Osculating Circle (OC) Method, is presented. The OC method is based on Gabor's method but with modified unwrapped …

Selecting Ports And Terminal Operators - An Application Of Pso, Tzay-An Shiau, Li-Mei Lin, Ding-Hsun Hsiao Oct 2011

Selecting Ports And Terminal Operators - An Application Of Pso, Tzay-An Shiau, Li-Mei Lin, Ding-Hsun Hsiao

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Past literature has mostly discussed port selection. However, within a given region, any port which meets a carrier’s threshold conditions is eligible for consideration, and a terminal operator at any of these ports is a candidate for entering into a contract with the carrier. The choice is not restricted to terminal operators at a single given port. Thus the choice of terminal operator between ports within a given region is an important issue in the decision-making process and has rarely been addressed in the literature. The main purpose of this paper is to examine a situation in which all ports …

Aerial Rendezvous Between An Unmanned Air Vehicle And An Orbiting Target Vehicle, Mark Andrew Owen Oct 2011

Aerial Rendezvous Between An Unmanned Air Vehicle And An Orbiting Target Vehicle, Mark Andrew Owen

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis we develop methods that facilitate an aerial rendezvous between two air vehicles. The objective of this research is to produce a method that can be used to insert a miniature air vehicle behind a rendezvous vehicle and then track that vehicle to enable a visual rendezvous. For this research we assume the rendezvous vehicle is following a relatively stable and roughly elliptical orbit. Path planners and controllers have been developed that can be used to effectively intercept the rendezvous vehicle by inserting the MAV onto the orbit of interest. A method for planning and following time-optimal Dubins …
