Construction Of An Np Problem With An Exponential Lower Bound, Roman V. Yampolskiy Nov 2011

Construction Of An Np Problem With An Exponential Lower Bound, Roman V. Yampolskiy

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

In this paper we present a Hashed-Path Traveling Salesperson Problem (HPTSP), a new type of problem which has the interesting property of having no polynomial time solutions. Next we show that HPTSP is in the class NP by demonstrating that local information about sub-routes is insufficient to compute the complete value of each route. As a consequence, via Ladner"s theorem, we show that the class NPI is non-empty.

Liquid Crystal Devices For Optical Communications And Sensing Applications, Sunish Mathews Nov 2011

Liquid Crystal Devices For Optical Communications And Sensing Applications, Sunish Mathews

Doctoral

This thesis is focussed on the design and development of liquid crystal based tunable photonic devices for applications in optical communications and optical sensing, with an emphasis on all-fiber device configuration. The infiltration of liquid crystals into photonic crystal fiber provides a suitable common platform to design and fabricate simple and compact all-fiber tunable photonic devices which can be easily integrated with optical fiber networks and sensing systems. Based on the infiltration of liquid crystals – materials with high dielectric anisotropy, into photonic crystal fibers a common platform is developed to address the need for electronically tunable photonic devices with …

Space-Time Least-Squares Finite-Element Method For Shallow-Water Equations, Shin-Jye Liang, Ying-Chih Chen Oct 2011

Space-Time Least-Squares Finite-Element Method For Shallow-Water Equations, Shin-Jye Liang, Ying-Chih Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In this paper, a space-time least-squares finite-element method for the 2D nonlinear shallow-water equations (SWE) is developed. The method can easily handle complex geometry, bed slope (source term), and radiation boundary condition without any special treatment. Other advantages of the method include: high order approximations in space and time can easily be employed, no upwind scheme is needed, as well as the resulting system equations is symmetric and positivedefinite, therefore, can be solved efficiently with the pre-conditioned conjugate gradient method. The model is applied to several benchmark tests, including standing wave in a flat closed basin, propagation of sinusoidal wave …

Design Of A Retinal Tracking System For Jumping Spiders, Cristina Canavesi, Skye Long, Dennis Fantone, Elizabeth Jakob, Robert R. Jackson, Duane Harland, Jannick P. Rolland Oct 2011

Design Of A Retinal Tracking System For Jumping Spiders, Cristina Canavesi, Skye Long, Dennis Fantone, Elizabeth Jakob, Robert R. Jackson, Duane Harland, Jannick P. Rolland

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

We designed an optical system for tracking the retinal movement of a jumping spider as a stimulus is presented to it. The system, using all off-the-shelf optical components except for one custom aspheric plate, consists of three sub-systems that share a common path: a visible stimuli presentation sub-system, a NIR illumination sub-system, and a NIR retinal imaging sub-system. A 25 mm clearance between the last element and the spider ensures a stable positioning of the spider. The stimuli presentation system relays an image from a display to the spider eye, matching the 15 arcmin resolution of the two principal eyes …

Optimized Hyperspectral Imagery Anomaly Detection Through Robust Parameter Design, Francis M. Mindrup Oct 2011

Optimized Hyperspectral Imagery Anomaly Detection Through Robust Parameter Design, Francis M. Mindrup

Theses and Dissertations

Anomaly detection algorithms for hyperspectral imagery (HSI) are an important first step in the analysis chain which can reduce the overall amount of data to be processed. The actual amount of data reduced depends greatly on the accuracy of the anomaly detection algorithm implemented. Most, if not all, anomaly detection algorithms require a user to identify some initial parameters. These parameters (or controls) affect overall algorithm performance. Regardless of the anomaly detector being utilized, algorithm performance is often negatively impacted by uncontrollable noise factors which introduce additional variance into the process. In the case of HSI, the noise variables are …
