Master's Theses

This study examines the nanoindentation (energy inclusive) properties of 0.2 mg/kg alendronate treated ribs at one and three years against a vehicle treated control in a fresh-frozen, non-cold-mounted, condition.  This was to verify if the tissue-level properties for 0.2 ALN treated beagles would increase because of an increased level of mineralization despite a microdamage increase.

A total of twelve (12) skeletally mature (1–2 years old) female beagle dogs were treated daily for three years and one year with oral doses of vehicle (VEH, 1 mL/kg saline) or alendronate (ALN, 0.2 Merck, Rahway, NJ). The 0.2 mg dose corresponds, on a …

Ischemia Impairs Vasodilation In Skeletal Muscle Resistance Artery, Kyle Remington Struthers Jun 2011

Ischemia Impairs Vasodilation In Skeletal Muscle Resistance Artery, Kyle Remington Struthers

Master's Theses

Functional vasodilation in arterioles is impaired with chronic ischemia. We sought to examine the impact of chronic ischemia and age on skeletal muscle resistance artery function. To examine the impact of chronic ischemia, the femoral artery was resected from young (2-3mo) and adult (6-7mo) mice and the profunda femoris artery diameter was measured at rest and following gracilis muscle contraction 14 days later using intravital microscopy. Functional vasodilation was significantly impaired in ischemic mice (14.4±4.6% vs. 137.8±14.3%, p<0.0001 n=8) and non-ischemic adult mice (103.0±9.4% vs. 137.8±14.3%, p=0.05 n=10). In order to analyze the cellular mechanisms of the impairment, a protocol was developed to apply pharmacological agents to the experimental preparation while maintaining tissue homeostasis. Endothelial and smooth muscle dependent vasodilation were impaired with ischemia, 39.6 ± 13.6% vs. 80.5 ± 11.4% and 43.0 ± 11.7% vs. 85.1 ± 10.5%, respectively. From this data, it can be supported that smooth muscle dysfunction is the reason for the observed impairment in arterial vasodilation.

The Effect Of Transit-Oriented Development On Vehicle Miles Traveled: A Comparison Of A Tod Versus A Non-Tod Neighborhood In Carlsbad, Ca, Natalie Louise Stiffler

Master's Theses

Transit-oriented development (TOD) is a strategy being used to reduce congestion, provide mode choice, and improve quality of life. A large amount of research has been done on individual aspects of TOD, but research specific to transportation-related benefits of TOD is limited. There is a need for traffic and transit data that is supported by comprehensive resident, employee, and user surveys to demonstrate the interrelationship between land uses, transportation, and socioeconomic and demographic characteristics. Moreover, VMT data at the household level is essential to analyze household travel behavior and the potential for VMT related emissions reduction.

The purpose of this …

Large Kinetic Asymmetry In The Metal-Insulator Transition Nucleated At Localized And Extended Defects, W. Fan, Jinbo Cao, J. Seidel, Yijia Gu, J. W. Yim, For Full List Of Authors, See Publisher's Website.

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Superheating and supercooling effects are characteristic kinetic processes in first-order phase transitions, and asymmetry between them is widely observed. In materials where electronic and structural degrees of freedom are coupled, a wide, asymmetric hysteresis may occur in the transition between electronic phases. Structural defects are known to seed heterogeneous nucleation of the phase transition, hence reduce the degree of superheating and supercooling. Here we show that in the metal-insulator transition of single-crystal VO 2, a large kinetic asymmetry arises from the distinct spatial extension and distribution of two basic types of crystal defects: point defects and twin walls. Nanometer-thick twin …

Managing Risk In A Failing It Project: A Social Constructionist View, Wee-Kiat Lim, Siew Kien Sia, Adrian Yeow Jun 2011

Managing Risk In A Failing It Project: A Social Constructionist View, Wee-Kiat Lim, Siew Kien Sia, Adrian Yeow

CCX Research

Why do IT projects continue to stumble, despite the proliferation of risk management methodologies and a growing body of knowledge on project risk assessment and mitigation? In this paper, we propose an alternative theoretical perspective that views project risk as a social construction process shaped by the risk accounts of social groups and actors within an implementation context. Risk management is embedded in the social processes where risks are negotiated and contested, with some risk accounts amplified and some attenuated. Through the analysis of a large IT implementation in an Asian logistics firm and its trajectory of successive crises, we …

The main component of the TRNSYS model was the Type 73 FPC or Type 538 ETC. A comparison of modelled and measured data resulted in percentage mean absolute errors for …

Shifted Nmf Using An Efficient Constant-Q Transform For Monaural Sound Source Separation, Rajesh Jaiswal, Derry Fitzgerald, Eugene Coyle, Scott Rickard Jun 2011

Shifted Nmf Using An Efficient Constant-Q Transform For Monaural Sound Source Separation, Rajesh Jaiswal, Derry Fitzgerald, Eugene Coyle, Scott Rickard

Conference papers

Non-negative Matrix Factorisation (NMF) based algorithms have found application in monaural audio source separation due to their ability to factorize audio spectrogram into additive part-based basis functions, which typically corresponds to individual notes or chords in music. These separated basis functions are usually greater in number than the active sources, hence clustering is needed for individual source signal synthesis. Although, many attempts have been made to improve the clustering of the basis functions to sources, much research is still required in this area. Recently, Shifted NMF based methods have been proposed as a means to avoid clustering these pitched basis …

User Assisted Source Separation Using Non-Negative Matrix Factorisation, Derry Fitzgerald Jun 2011

User Assisted Source Separation Using Non-Negative Matrix Factorisation, Derry Fitzgerald

Conference papers

Much research has been carried out on the use of non-negative matrix factorisation for the purpose of musical sound source separation. However, a notable shortcoming of non-negative matrix factorisation is that the recovered basis functions have to be clustered to sound sources for separation to take place. This has proved to be a difficult problem to solve. As a means of overcoming this problem, we introduce an extension to non-negative matrix factorisation which allows a user to guide the sepa- ration by singing, or playing along with, the source they want to separate. This is done through the use of …

Evaluation Of Pilot Project: Emergency Traffic Control For Responders, Sarah M. Mccormack, Jennifer R. Walton, Kenneth R. Agent

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Traffic control is an essential component of incident response in order to move road users safely and expeditiously past or around a traffic incident, and to reduce the likelihood of secondary crashes. Emergency responders, with the exception of law enforcement, are provided limited or no training in traffic control, but by nature of their job often have to perform such duties. There is a need to provide basic knowledge and equipment to on-scene responders in order to reduce traffic delays, secondary crashes, and injuries to those involved in response activities. This report summarizes the results of a pilot project where …
