A Rheological Model Of The Dynamic Behaviour Of Magnetorheological Elastomers, Lin Chen, Stephen Jerrams Jun 2011

A Rheological Model Of The Dynamic Behaviour Of Magnetorheological Elastomers, Lin Chen, Stephen Jerrams

Articles

A rheological model is described that was developed to simulate the dynamic behaviour of magnetorheological elastomers (MREs). The viscoelasticity of the polymer composite, magnetic field induced properties and interfacial slippage between the matrix and particles were modelled by analogy with a standard linear solid model, a stiffness variable spring and a spring-Coulomb friction slider respectively. The loading history and rate dependent constitutive relationships for MREs were derived from the rheological model. The hysteresis loop from shear strain - shear stress plots, which determines the shear modulus and loss factor, were obtained from substituting cyclic loading into these constitutive relationships. The …

Assessment Of Statewide Intersection Safety Performance, Christopher M. Monsere, Todd Johnson, Karen Dixon, Jianfei Zheng, Ida Schalkwyk

TREC Final Reports

This report summarizes the results of an analysis of the safety performance of Oregon’s intersections. Following a pilot study, a database of 500 intersections randomly sampled from around the state of Oregon in both urban and rural environments was assembled. These intersections were categorized into eight types based on number of legs (3 and 4), land use (urban or rural) and traffic control (signalized or minor stop-control). These categories were chosen to align with the intersection types in AASHTO’s recently released Highway Safety Manual (HSM). Geometric and traffic control elements were supplemented by compiling crash data and volumes on the …

Automatic Merging Of Lidar Point-Clouds Using Data From Low-Cost Gps/Imu Systems, Scott E. Budge, K. Von Niederhausern Jun 2011

Automatic Merging Of Lidar Point-Clouds Using Data From Low-Cost Gps/Imu Systems, Scott E. Budge, K. Von Niederhausern

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Stationary lidar (Light Detection and Ranging) systems are often used to collect 3-D data (point clouds) that can be used for terrain modelling. The lidar gathers scans which are then merged together to map a terrain. Typically this is done using a variant of the well-known Iterated Closest Point (ICP) algorithm when position and pose of the lidar scanner is not accurately known. One difficulty with the ICP algorithms is that they can give poor results when points that are not common to both scans (outliers) are matched together. With the advent of MEMS (microelectromechanical systems)-based GPS/IMU systems, it is …

Determining A Method For Rendering Low Cost Cdse(Zns) Core(Shell) Quantum Dots Aqueous Soluble Via Amphiphilic Polymer Wrapping, Patrick Mcbride Jun 2011

Determining A Method For Rendering Low Cost Cdse(Zns) Core(Shell) Quantum Dots Aqueous Soluble Via Amphiphilic Polymer Wrapping, Patrick Mcbride

Materials Engineering

Herein is described the procedure of two amphiphilic polymer wrapping techniques that may be employed for obtaining aqueous soluble quantum dots (QDs) for use in biological fluorescent imaging applications. The advent of QDs has led to new nanoscale fluorescent materials that exhibit unparalleled quantum yields (QYs), high resistance to photobleaching, tunable emissions, and
absorption over a large optical range. However, the QD synthesis employed here at Cal Poly to obtain bright, photostable CdSe(ZnS) core(shell) QDs involves the use of organic solvents and surfactants, leading to hydrophobic QDs. Since all of biology relies on aqueous solubility, this hydrophobicity creates a major …

Artificial Muscle Project: Process Development Of Polydimethyl Siloxane Thin Films For Use In Dielectric Electroactive Polymer Artificial Muscle Actuators, Vincent J. Gayotin, Richard W. Morrison, Paul A. Preisser

Materials Engineering

An artificial muscle design was created founded on the principles of a dielectric electroactive polymer (DEAP), which is fundamentally similar to a capacitor. A polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS)-based elastomer, Sylgard 184 from Dow Corning, was chosen for the design and spun coat onto polystyrene (PS) Petri dishes at varying speeds to create a thin film, using speeds of 2000 rpm, 3000 rpm, 4000 rpm, 5000 rpm, and 6000 rpm. The film thicknesses were measured optically through use of a microscope with coupled computer imaging software to generate a characteristic curve of film thickness to spin speed, achieving a minimum film thickness …

Design And Characterization Of A Process For Bulk Synthesis Of Cadmium Selenide Quantum Dots, Susan Harada Jun 2011

Design And Characterization Of A Process For Bulk Synthesis Of Cadmium Selenide Quantum Dots, Susan Harada

Materials Engineering

The objective of the process is to synthesize quantum dots that will fluoresce over the visible spectrum of 450 to 650nm; then to mix the quantum dots together in a polymer matrix so that when illuminated with a blue LED the mixture yields “white” light. The current quantum dot synthesis is a chemical process that involves adding a room temperature Se-TOP precursor to a 225°C Cd precursor solution to cause nucleation and growth of nanoparticles. This method, however, only yields quantum dots that fluoresce in the 520 to 600nm range. In order to create the “white” light phosphor replacement, red …

Missouri S&T Engineering Management Capstone Senior Design: Lessons Learned And Challenges To Come, Stephen A. Raper

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A more traditional, capstone senior design course was recently added as a requirement for Engineering Management undergraduates in the Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Department at Missouri S&T. The case studies course that had served that purpose was deemed to be insufficient for ABET accreditation purposes by department faculty. The most recent 2008 accreditation visit for the department verified this belief and caused the department to launch the new class earlier than anticipated to prove the class would be taught and that it would meet required standards. Thus, no weaknesses or concerns were noted in this area in the final …

Estimating Mean And Variance Under Interval Uncertainty: Dynamic Case, Rafik Aliev, Vladik Kreinovich Jun 2011

Estimating Mean And Variance Under Interval Uncertainty: Dynamic Case, Rafik Aliev, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, it is important to estimate themean E and the variance V from the sample valuesx1, ..., xn. Usually, in statistics,we consider the case when the parameters like E and V do not change with timeand when the sample values xi are known exactly. Inpractice, the values xicome from measurements, andmeasurements are never 100% accurate. In many cases, we onlyknow the upper bound Di on the measurement error. Inthis case, once we know the measured value Xi, wecan conclude that the actual (unknown) value xi belongs …

Resizable, Scalable, Concurrent Hash Tables, Josh Triplett, Paul E. Mckenney, Jonathan Walpole

Computer Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

We present algorithms for shrinking and expanding a hash table while allowing concurrent, wait-free, linearly scalable lookups. These resize algorithms allow the hash table to maintain constant-time performance as the number of entries grows, and reclaim memory as the number of entries decreases, without delaying or disrupting readers.

We implemented our algorithms in the Linux kernel, to test their performance and scalability. Benchmarks show lookup scalability improved 125x over readerwriter locking, and 56% over the current state-of-the-art for Linux, with no performance degradation for lookups during a resize.

To achieve this performance, this hash table implementation uses a new concurrent …

Understanding The Effects Of Temperature Extremes On The Tensile And Short Beam Shear Strength Of Epoxy-Based, Glass-Fiber Reinforced Composites, Jonathan Blake Patterson

Materials Engineering

Aptera (Oceanside, CA) has developed two epoxy-based, silica fiber-reinforced composites to be used on their three-wheeled all-electric vehicle called the 2e.  Aptera’s composites were studied at temperature extremes using a dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) system and by tensile and short beam shear (SBS) testing using an Instron testing system. These tests were conducted to simulate the loading of the composite in the 2e vehicle.  Tensile and short beam shear samples were machined to 150 mm x 25 mm x 2 mm and 40 mm x 13 mm x 6 mm, respectively.  DMA samples were machined to 30 mm x 5 …

The Design And Manufacture Of A Microfluidic Reactor For Synthesis Of Cadmium Selenide Quantum Dots Using Silicon And Glass Substrates, Peter Gonsalves Jun 2011

The Design And Manufacture Of A Microfluidic Reactor For Synthesis Of Cadmium Selenide Quantum Dots Using Silicon And Glass Substrates, Peter Gonsalves

Materials Engineering

A microfluidic reactor for synthesizing cadmium selenide (CdSe) quantum dots (QDs) was synthesized out of silicon and Pyrex glass. Microfabrication techniques were used to etch the channels into the silicon wafer. Holes were wet-drilled into Pyrex glass using a diamond-tip drill bit. The Pyrex wafer was aligned to the etched silicon wafer and both were anodically bonded to complete the microfluidic reactor. Conditions for anodic bonding were created by exposing the stacked substrates to 300V at ~350oC under 5.46N of force.  Bulk CdSe solution was mixed at room temperature and treated as a single injection. The syringe containing …

Comparison Of Photothermal And Piezoacoustic Excitation Methods For Frequency And Phase Modulation Atomic Force Microscopy In Liquid Environments, A. Labuda, K. Kobayashi, Daniel Kiracofe, K. Suzuki, P. H. Gruetter, H. Yamada Jun 2011

Comparison Of Photothermal And Piezoacoustic Excitation Methods For Frequency And Phase Modulation Atomic Force Microscopy In Liquid Environments, A. Labuda, K. Kobayashi, Daniel Kiracofe, K. Suzuki, P. H. Gruetter, H. Yamada

Birck and NCN Publications

In attempting to perform frequency modulation atomic force microscopy (FM-AFM) in liquids, a non-flat phase transfer function in the self-excitation system prevents proper tracking of the cantilever natural frequency. This results in frequency-and-phase modulation atomic force microscopy (FPM-AFM) which lies in between phase modulation atomic force microscopy (PM-AFM) and FM-AFM. We derive the theory necessary to recover the conservative force and damping in such a situation, where standard FM-AFM theory no longer applies. Although our recovery procedure applies to all cantilever excitation methods in principle, its practical implementation may be difficult, or even impossible, if the cantilever is driven piezoacoustically. …

Blds Heating, Alan Cook, Jon Hsu, Robert Veasey

Mechanical Engineering

Dr. Westphal, a professor at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, created a boundary layer data system (BLDS). This device was designed to measure the boundary layer over a wing of an airplane during flight. A problem with the BLDS is that at flight altitude of 50,000 ft, the BLDS stops functioning due to the extremely low temperatures.

Team IcePick’s objective was to design, build, and test a device which could provide heat to the BLDS so it can function.  Our team decided to continue with where the previous senior project team had left off and build upon their proof of …
