Automated Chemical Stabilizing Of Leaded Paint Residue From Bridge Maintenance Painting Operations, Bobby W. Meade, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Sudhir Palle Jun 2011

Automated Chemical Stabilizing Of Leaded Paint Residue From Bridge Maintenance Painting Operations, Bobby W. Meade, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Sudhir Palle

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

This study addressed the use of automated equipment to dose and mix lead stabilizing compounds to allow leaded paint residue/debris to be disposed at in-state contained landfills. The stabilizing would be conducted in situ at bridges being subjected to maintenance painting operations involving total coating removal and replacement. Many Kentucky bridges have existing painting that contains lead compounds at levels which may constitute hazardous wastes upon removal. The KYTC practice of recycling lead containing residue is working well at this time but the issue of a single recycler available continues to place KYTC in a position of returning to hazardous …

Kentucky Bridges With High-Strength Quenched And Tempered Steel, Theodore Hopwood Ii, Jared Fairchild

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) has several bridges employing high-strength quenched and tempered (QT) steels. In the past several decades, weld and corrosion cracking problems have occurred with QT steel in three KYTC bridges. This material has typically been employed on large bridges in fracture-critical members which increases the concern about these steels. This study was performed to review the KYTC steel bridge inventory and identify bridges/structural member containing QT steels. The list consisted of any KYTC maintained bridge with an individual span greater than 150 feet. KTC used this list to identify each bridge and members containing QT steel. …

Computational Micromechanics Modeling Of Damage-Dependent Bituminous Composites Based On Two-Way Coupled Multiscale Approach, Jamilla Lutif Jun 2011

Computational Micromechanics Modeling Of Damage-Dependent Bituminous Composites Based On Two-Way Coupled Multiscale Approach, Jamilla Lutif

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study presents a multiscale computational model with its verification and validation to mechanical behavior predictions of bituminous composites that are subject to fracture damage. Bituminous composites are classical examples of multi-phase composites in different length scales. The understanding of the mechanical behavior of asphaltic media has been a challenge to the pavement mechanics community due to multiple complexities involved: heterogeneity, anisotropy, nonlinear inelasticity, and damage growth in multiple forms. To account for this problem in an accurate and efficient way, this study proposes the use of the two-way coupled multiscale computational modeling technique.

The two-way coupled multiscale model is …

Effects Of Phosphate-Buffered Saline Concentration And Incubation Time On The Mechanical And Structural Properties Of Electrochemically Aligned Collagen Threads, Jorge Alfredo Uquillas, Vipuil Kishore, Ozan Akkus

Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Faculty Publications

A key step during the synthesis of collagen constructs is the incubation of monomeric collagen in phosphate buffer saline (PBS) to promote fibrillogenesis in the collagen network. Optimal PBS-treatment conditions for monomeric collagen solutions to induce gelation are well established in the literature. Recently, a report in the literature (Cheng et al 2008 Biomaterials 29 3278-88) showed a novel method to fabricate highly oriented electrochemically aligned collagen (ELAC) threads which have orders of magnitude greater packing density than collagen gels. The optimal PBS-treatment conditions for induction of D-banding pattern in such a dense and anisotropic collagen network are unknown. This …

Design Optimization Of Gaas Betavoltaic Batteries, Haiyanag Chen, Lan Jiang, Xuyuan Chen Jun 2011

Design Optimization Of Gaas Betavoltaic Batteries, Haiyanag Chen, Lan Jiang, Xuyuan Chen

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

GaAs junctions are designed and fabricated for beta voltaic batteries. the design is optimized according to the characteristics of GaAs interface states and the diffusion length in the depletion region of GaAs carriers. under an illumination of 10 mCi cm-263Ni, the open circuit voltage of the optimized batteries is about ∼0.3 V. It is found that the GaAs interface states induce depletion layers on P-type GaAs surfaces. the depletion layer along the P+PN+ junction edge isolates the perimeter surface from the bulk junction, which tends to significantly reduce the battery dark current and leads to a high open circuit voltage. …

An Investigation Into Ultrasonic Communication For Near-Body Networks, Eric Joshua Escudero Jr., Gursewak Singh Rai

Electrical Engineering

The following report presents a study of body-area, free-space ultrasonic communication system. Two analog communication systems are investigated. The initial communications system setup relies upon the amplitude modulation (AM) techniques to transmit the signal. Such a system is prone to noise since the amplitude of the signal is directly affected by distance and the signal strength will deteriorate. The secondary communication system involves utilizing frequency modulation (FM). This method avoids the issue of losing information due to amplitude deterioration, but encounters delay issues. The main hardware components used in the approach outlined include ultrasonic transducers (UTs) used for both transmitting …

Solar Powered Electric Clothes Dryer, Roger Mai, Alan Swe Jun 2011

Solar Powered Electric Clothes Dryer, Roger Mai, Alan Swe

Electrical Engineering

Appliances that consume the most energy in a household usually involve heating, and an electric clothes dryer is one such appliance, consuming up to 4KW of power. The most environmentally friendly way is to hang clothes outside to dry, a natural solar and wind powered method, but unfortunately most people are unable to do so as some neighborhood communities do not allow the hanging of laundry outside as it is regarded as “unsightly”, for example. This project aims to provide an alternate solution to the wall-powered electric clothes dryer by designing one which operates entirely off the grid.
