The purpose of this paper is to determine the feasibility of gravity gradient stabilizing a 3U CubeSat and then using a miniature reaction wheel to further increase stability characteristics. This paper also serves as a guide to understanding and utilizing quaternions in attitude control analysis. The analytical results show that using 33 centimeter booms and 400 gram tip masses, a 3U CubeSat will experience a maximum of 6 degrees of angular displacement in yaw and pitch, and less than .5 degrees of angular displacement in the nadir axis. The hoes are widely used in the farms and home gardens in the United States. Many existing hoes are not ergonomically designed because they require a lot of back bending and wrist bending during use. Back bending often causes lower back injuries, and wrist bending often causes carpal tunnel syndrome. It can be very expensive to cure these injuries. Thin(16matrix of key deposition parameters was constructed to develop the optimum spray parameters. The effects of parameter variations on the porosity levels of these coatings were assessed. Key parameter interactions were reported. Quantifiable interactions between the selected parameters were noted for the LM24 substrate. However, on the LM25 substrate these interactions were much less defined. Corrosion performance of the optimised coatings, based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, was reported. The presence of through-pores in the coatings were shown to reduce the corrosion resistance of the coated systems by a factor of 10, in dilute NaCl solutions, compared to bulk 316L stainless …

An electric aircraft propulsion test rig was designed and fabricated to predict thrust, torque and battery discharge profiles for an electric aircraft. The original unit was purchased from ElectraFlyer and included the DC brushless motor, carbon fiber propeller, charger, electronic controller and lithium polymer batteries. Various components were constructed and purchased in order to fabricate the optimal test rig apparatus. This apparatus allows for simultaneous measurement of the torque and thrust of the system through the use of a biaxial sensor. This project focuses on designing a computerized decision support system (DSS) to assist the Cal Poly Alumni Association with scheduling their Mustang Mentoring day. The current scheduling process is time intensive, error prone, and does not consider student preferences. The decision support system optimally generates multiple sets of pairs of students and mentors and schedules them avoiding conflicts and duplicates. Dynamic soaring is a technique used by the sea bird the Albatross. This technique allows for the bird to stay in the air for extended periods of time with very little effort. Dynamic soaring utilizes the wind gradient on the surface of the ocean to maintain its airspeed. A similar technique is used by RC glider pilots to achieve high speeds by using the shear wind layer on the leeward side of mountain ridges.

This paper discusses the design of the Rarefied High-Altitude Zenith Experimental Rocket (RHAZER) which is launched at an altitude of 35 kilometers from a weather balloon. The weather balloon is capable of carrying up to 2 kilograms of payload to this altitude, and the rocket can carry a payload of approximately 150 grams to an altitude of at least 80 kilometers and be recovered safely after landing. Trajectories created with n-body orbit models were propagated in geocentric and interplanetary test cases. The n-body models were created in MATLAB® using numerical integration. In the geocentric test case, the n-body codes were compared to a two-body orbit model and to the default HPOP model used in Satellite Tool Kit®. The interplanetary test case compared the n-body model to the HORIZONS ephemeris data from JPL and an equation for ephemeris propagation. Both cases used the same initial positions and velocities and were propagated for the same duration. The results of the analysis showed that while n-body models …

Abstract

An experiment was conducted to determine and reduce the causes of variation between a 304 Stainless Steel and super elastic Nickel Titanium dissimilar metal weld. Six factors were established to understand the cause of variation: perpendicularity, final grind, surface finish, weld force, weld pulse duration, and alignment. Using a rotational test with an air piston break pressures were established and charted in Minitab to identify trends. It was shown that weld force and weld pulse duration were the two factors that had the most influence on break strength. This data also showed that higher strength groups had less variability. …

In an effort to reduce the amount of manual labor associated with physical inventory counts of large warehouse type environments, a study was performed analyzing the effectiveness of item-level RFID to automate counts. Products were selected based off of certain characteristics and tagged with passive RFID tags. A design of experiment was developed specific to each product that best related to actual in store environments. Experiments were conducted in the Poly GAIT lab.
