A Wide Speed Range Sensorless Control Technique Of Brushless Dc Motors For Electric Propulsors, Min-Fu Hsieh, Hung-Ju Liao Oct 2010

A Wide Speed Range Sensorless Control Technique Of Brushless Dc Motors For Electric Propulsors, Min-Fu Hsieh, Hung-Ju Liao

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper presents a sensorless drive technique for permanent-magnet brushless DC motors applied to electric propulsors of small ships or underwater vehicles. Propulsors enveloping electric motors (e.g., POD or subsea thrusters) have been increasingly applied due to their advantages of excellent maneuverability, high efficiency and low maintenance costs. To secure reliable operation under water, sensorless control is considered as an appropriate technique. However, conventional sensorless techniques often suffer problems of narrow speed range and low efficiency, particularly when the propulsors sustain heavy load at high speed operation. Hence, a sensorless technique with a wide speed range is developed in this …

Steady-State Characteristics Analysis Of Deep-Sea Running Mechanism With Planetary Gear Wheel Based On Articulated Steering Radius, Ya-Li Feng, Yi-Ting Kang, Wen-Ming Zhang, Jie Zhang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Steady-state characteristics analysis for the deep-sea running mechanism with planetary gear train which is designed to adapt to complex terrain in the deep-sea hydrothermal sulfide and rich-cobalt incrustation survey area is based on articulated steering radius. The articulated steering radius formula of the deep-sea running mechanism is derived from the geometric relationship, considering the wheel side slip angle. Based on the formula, three types of steering steady-state characteristic analysis, understeer, neutral steer and oversteer, are made for the mechanism. Steering simulation analysis of the running mechanism with planetary gear is conducted in ADAMS software with different speed. In the process …

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The present study focuses on the numerical simulation of cavitation around the NACA 0015. The unsteady behaviors of cavitation which have worthwhile applications are investigated. The cavitation patterns, velocity fields and frequency of the cavitating flow around hydrofoil is obtained. For multi phase simulation, single-fluid Navier–Stokes equations, along with a volume fraction transport equation, are employed. The bubble dynamics model is utilized to simulate phase change. SIMPLE algorithm is used for velocity and pressure computations. For discretization of equations the finite-volume approach written in body fitted curvilinear coordinates, on collocated grid, is used. In this study, unsteady simulation of cavitation …

The Study Of Ship Collision Avoidance Route Planning By Ant Colony Algorithm, Ming-Cheng Tsou, Chao-Kuang Hsueh Oct 2010

The Study Of Ship Collision Avoidance Route Planning By Ant Colony Algorithm, Ming-Cheng Tsou, Chao-Kuang Hsueh

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Maritime traffic is becoming more complex every day. At present, due to technological advances and to new maritime regulations, there is increasing demand for new nautical marine instruments to be installed into the bridge, and the breadth of navigational information complicates on-duty officers’ decisions. Therefore, if decision support tools can be used to help deal with navigational decision-making, human errors arising from subjective judgments can be reduced, and sea transport safety improved. This research uses the concept of e-navigation as a framework, positioning collision avoidance path planning as the main theme, and applies an Ant Colony Algorithm (ACA) in the …

Cavity Resonant Mode In A Metal Film Perforated With Two-Dimensional Triangular Lattice Hole Arrays, Wan Kuang, Alex English, William B. Knowlton, Jeunghoon Lee, William L. Hughes, Bernard Yurke

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The transmission property of metallic films with two-dimensional hole arrays is studied experimentally and numerically. For a triangular lattice subwavelength hole array in a 150 nm thick Ag film, both cavity resonance and planar surface modes are identified as the sources of enhanced optical transmissions. Semi-analytical models are developed for calculating the dispersion relation of the cavity resonant mode. They agree well with the experimental results and full-wave numerical calculations. Strong interaction between the cavity resonant mode and surface modes is also observed.

On State-Feedback Controller Synthesis For A Class Of Second-Order Nonlinear Systems With Uncertainties, Jenq-Lang Wu, Chee-Fei Yung Oct 2010

On State-Feedback Controller Synthesis For A Class Of Second-Order Nonlinear Systems With Uncertainties, Jenq-Lang Wu, Chee-Fei Yung

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper presents a constructive method to design stabilizing controllers for a class of second-order uncertain nonlinear systems whose input parts may vanish at the origin. A sufficient condition for the existence of stabilizing state feedback controllers is provided. Under the small control property, a formula is proposed for constructing continuous stabilizing feedback laws. In the case that the small control property does not hold, another formula for constructing continuous state feedback controllers, with small control magnitude near the origin, to achieve robust practical stability is presented.

Color Intensity Method For Hydrogel Oxygen Sensor Array, Jongwon Park, Wonhak Hong, Chang-Soo Kim Oct 2010

Color Intensity Method For Hydrogel Oxygen Sensor Array, Jongwon Park, Wonhak Hong, Chang-Soo Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The oxygen imaging technique to obtain a 2-D distribution is a convenient method because it does not require individual addressing of each sensing element in a sensor array. Until recently, color charge coupled devices (CCDs) have rarely been used for oxygen imaging in spite of usefulness for analyzing the spectral content of images. in this work, a color CCD camera was used for luminescence intensity imaging. Two methods of color intensity analysis are investigated and compared. the first method is to analyze the total Red-Green-Blue (RGB) color intensity of the original color image. the second method involves extracting the red …

Exploring The Human Interactivity With A Robot To Obtain The Fundamental Properties Of Materials, William L. Christian

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research studies the way in which humans and robots interact with each other. When two humans are working together through a set of robotic devices, do they tend to work together or fight with each other more? In which Cartesian direction do they have the most difficulty? Does fighting drastically affect the performance of the team? Finally, what measures can be taken to promote better cooperation between humans and robots to ultimately allow humans to work just as comfortably with a robotic partner as with a human partner? This research answers these questions and provides an analysis of human-robot …

Design Principles And Preliminary Actuation Approaches For Novel Multiple-Layer Lamina Emergent Mechanisms, Paul Shumway Gollnick Oct 2010

Design Principles And Preliminary Actuation Approaches For Novel Multiple-Layer Lamina Emergent Mechanisms, Paul Shumway Gollnick

Theses and Dissertations

Multiple-layer Lamina Emergent Mechanisms (MLEMs) are mechanisms made from multiple sheets (lamina) of material with motion that emerges out of the fabrication plane. This study has shown that understanding how layers are used in existing products and in nature provides insight into how MLEMs can also use layers to achieve certain tasks. The multi-layered nature of MLEMs and the interactions between these layers are what enhance the capabilities of MLEMs and allow them to better meet design objectives. Layer separation is one objective for which MLEMs are well-suited. Layer separation can have a variety of applications and there are a …

Search Pattern Generation And Path Management For Search Over Rough Terrain With A Small Uav, Jacob L. Bishop Oct 2010

Search Pattern Generation And Path Management For Search Over Rough Terrain With A Small Uav, Jacob L. Bishop

Theses and Dissertations

Search operations can be described by the interaction between three entities: the target, the sensor, and the environment. Past treatments of the search problem have focused primarily on the interaction between the sensor and the target. The effects that the environment has on the target and sensor have been greatly simplified or ignored completely. The wilderness search and rescue scenario is one case in which these interactions cannot be safely ignored. Using the wilderness search and rescue problem as our motivating example, we develop an algorithm for planning search paths for a small unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) over rough terrain …

Dartmouth Scholarship

Clostridium thermocellum is a thermophilic anaerobic bacterium that rapidly solubilizes cellulose with the aid of a multienzyme cellulosome complex. Creation of knockout mutants for Cel48S (also known as CelS, S(S), and S8), the most abundant cellulosome subunit, was undertaken to gain insight into its role in enzymatic and microbial cellulose solubilization. Cultures of the Cel48S deletion mutant (S mutant) were able to completely solubilize 10 g/L crystalline cellulose. The cellulose hydrolysis rate of the S mutant strain was 60% lower than the parent strain, with the S mutant strain also exhibiting a 40% reduction in cell yield. The cellulosome produced …

Modelling And Analysis Of Dynamic Capacity Complexity In Multi-Stage Production, Ahmed M. Deif, Hoda A. Elmaraghy Oct 2010

Modelling And Analysis Of Dynamic Capacity Complexity In Multi-Stage Production, Ahmed M. Deif, Hoda A. Elmaraghy

Industrial Technology and Packaging

The uncertainty associated with managing dynamic capacity problem is the main source of its complexity. This article presents a system dynamics approach to model and analyse operational complexity of dynamic capacity in multi-stage production. The unique feature of this approach is that it captures the stochastic nature of three main sources of complexity associated with dynamic capacity. These are the demand, internal manufacturing delay and capacity scalability delay. The developed model was demonstrated by an industrial case study of multi-stage printed circuit board assembly line. The analysis of simulation experiments showed that ignoring complexity sources can lead to wrong decisions …
