Work In Progress - Role Of Faculty In Promoting Lifelong Learning: Initial Findings, John Chen, Susan M. Lord, Katharyn Nottis, Michael Prince, Candice Stefanou, Jonathon Stolk

Mechanical Engineering

Calls for educational reform emphasize the need for student-centered learning approaches that foster lifelong learning. To be a lifelong learner includes characteristics consistent with those of self-directed learners, such as being curious, motivated, reflective, analytical, persistent, flexible, and independent. Instructor support of students’ self-directed learning (SDL) development relies on understanding and balancing these factors in the classroom. Engineering educators play a critical role in influencing outcomes related to SDL through their design of courses that support students’ transitions from controlled to autonomous learning behaviors. This study will examine a variety of engineering courses and pedagogical approaches. Each will be characterized …

Understanding The Interaction Between Blood Flow And An Applied Magnetic Field, Francy L. Sinatra

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Hemodynamic monitoring is extremely important in the accurate measurement of vital parameters. Current methods are highly invasive or noncontinuous, and require direct access to the patient’s skin. This study intends to explore the modulated magnetic signature of blood method (MMSB) to attain blood flow information. This method uses an applied magnetic field to magnetize the iron in the red blood cells and measures the disturbance to the field with a magnetic sensor [1]. Exploration will be done by experimentally studying in-vitro, as well as simulating in COMSOL the alteration of magnetic fields induced by the flow of a magnetic solution. …

Foundations For Dynamic Loads, Vijay K. Puri, Shamsher Prakash Oct 2010

Foundations For Dynamic Loads, Vijay K. Puri, Shamsher Prakash

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Design of foundations in earthquake prone areas needs special considerations. Shallow foundations may experience a reduction in bearing capacity and increase in settlement and tilt due to seismic loading. the reduction in bearing capacity depends on the nature and type of soil and ground acceleration parameters. in the case of piles, the soil-pile behavior under earthquake loading is generally nonlinear. the nonlinearity must be accounted for by defining soil-pile stiffness in terms of strain dependent soil modulus. a comparison of observed and predicted pile behavior under dynamic loads has attracted the attention of several investigators. the lateral dynamic pile response …

Effects Of Variable Solar Irradiance On The Reactive Power Compensation For Large Solar Farm, Dustin F. Howard, Ronald G. Harley, Jiaqi Liang, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Dish-Stirling systems are a form of concentrating solar power (CSP) emerging as an efficient and reliable source of renewable energy. Various technical hurdles are involved in the grid interconnection of dish-Stirling systems, particularly with issues related to power factor correction, low voltage ride-through capability, and reactive power planning. While there are no grid-interconnection requirements specific to dish-Stirling technology, the requirements currently established for wind farms are used as a starting point due to the similar design and operating characteristics between wind farms and dish-Stirling solar farms. a dish-Stirling solar farm requires external reactive power compensation to meet the power factor …

Estimation Of Voltage Stability Index In A Power System With Plug-In Electric Vehicles, K. Joseph Makasa, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A Multilayer Perceptron (MLP) neural network-based approach for estimation of the voltage stability L-index in a power system with Plug-in Electric Vehicles (PEVs) is presented. This technique overcomes the limitations of direct calculation of L-index from measurements at a load bus. the L-index calculation is dependent upon the no-load voltage phasor for any given system topology and operating condition. in practice it is difficult to obtain no-load voltage phasor at a bus each time the system topology or operating point changes. an MLP neural network-based method capable of estimating voltage stability L-index at a load bus using direct measurements and …

Increasing Parameter Certainty And Data Utility Through Multi-Objective Calibration Of A Spatially Distributed Temperature And Solute Model, Christina J. Bandaragoda, Bethany T. Neilson

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

To support the goal of distributed hydrologic and instream model predictions based on physical processes, we explore multi-dimensional parameterization determined by a broad set of observations. We present a systematic approach to using various data types at spatially distributed locations to decrease parameter bounds sampled within calibration algorithms that ultimately provide information regarding the extent of individual processes represented within the model structure. Through the use of a simulation matrix, parameter sets are first locally optimized by fitting the respective data at one or two locations and then the best results are selected to resolve which parameter sets perform best …

Strong (X)Html Compliance With Haskell's Flexible Type System, Paul G. Talaga, Steve J. Chapin Oct 2010

Strong (X)Html Compliance With Haskell's Flexible Type System, Paul G. Talaga, Steve J. Chapin

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

We report on the embedding of a domain specific language, (X)HTML, into Haskell and demonstrate how this superficial non-context-free language can be represented and rendered to guarantee World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) compliance. Compliance of web content is important for the health of the Internet, accessibility, visibility, and reliable search. While tools exist to verify web content is compliant according to the W3C, few systems guarantee that all produced content is compliant. We present CH-(X)HTML, a library for generating compliant (X)HTML content by using Haskell to encode the nontrivial syntax of (X)HTML set forth by the W3C. Any compliant document …

Malaria remains a serious concern for people living and traveling to warm climates in Africa, Asia, and some parts of America. Understanding the mechanism of the malaria parasite in the liver phase could lead to important discoveries for preventative and treatment therapeutics before the disease develops into the blood stage. While in vitro liver cell culture models have been explored, a device that mimics the liver cell architecture with the capability of high-resolution imaging has never been created. In this research, a cell culture microfluidic device was designed and fabricated with a membrane integrated design to mimic the architecture of …

Continuous Electrowetting Actuation Utilizing Current Rectification Properties Of Valve Metal Films, Corey M. Lynch Oct 2010

Continuous Electrowetting Actuation Utilizing Current Rectification Properties Of Valve Metal Films, Corey M. Lynch

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) is a technique for reducing the apparent contact angle of a fluid droplet, which has many promising applications in the fields of optics, digital displays, and lab-on-a-chip research. In this thesis, a design is presented for a novel single circuit device for achieving continuous droplet motion, by using the current-rectifying properties of valve metals to create diode-like behavior. This contrasts with existing designs, which require an array of individual electrodes to achieve motion in discrete steps. We are able to demonstrate continuous droplet motion across a 28mm-long test strip with an applied voltage of 303 V …

Labyrinthine Instability In Thin Liquid Films, P. Neogi Oct 2010

Labyrinthine Instability In Thin Liquid Films, P. Neogi

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

When a thin liquid film on a solid surface has a thickness corresponding to a particular part the spinodal region of the disjoining pressure versus thickness isotherm, the film breaks down. One of the patterns that emerges on the breakdown has been referred to as wavy instability. It is compared here to the labyrinthine instability seen in magnetic films. the system is modeled following the procedure used in magnetic systems, and the pattern of wavy instability is broken down into a curved thick-thin film in equilibrium with a flat thin-thin film of constant thickness. Minimization of free energy leads to …

Individual Muscle Contributions To The Axial Knee Joint Contact Force During Normal Walking, Kotaro Sasaki, Richard R. Neptune Oct 2010

Individual Muscle Contributions To The Axial Knee Joint Contact Force During Normal Walking, Kotaro Sasaki, Richard R. Neptune

Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Muscles are significant contributors to the high joint forces developed in the knee during human walking. Not only do muscles contribute to the knee joint forces by acting to compress the joint, but they also develop joint forces indirectly through their contributions to the ground reaction forces via dynamic coupling. Thus, muscles can have significant contributions to forces at joints they do not span. However, few studies have investigated how the major lower-limb muscles contribute to the knee joint contact forces during walking. The goal of this study was to use a muscle-actuated forward dynamics simulation of walking to identify …

Patents (University of Northern Iowa)

A computer simulation and virtual reality system simulates the use of a blasting nozzle to remove one or more coatings and/or rust from a virtual surface. The user operates an electronic controller in the form of a blasting nozzle that outputs a signal indicating whether the blasting nozzle controller is in an "on" position or in an "off" position. The system also has a motion tracking system that tracks the position and orientation of the blasting nozzle controller with respect to the virtual surface defined on the display screen. Simulation software in a computer generates virtual blast pattern data, and …

Concurrent Muscoskeletal Dynamics And Finite Element Analysis Predicts Altered Gait Patterns To Reduce Foot Tissue Loading, Jason P. Halloran, Marko Ackermann, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert Oct 2010

Concurrent Muscoskeletal Dynamics And Finite Element Analysis Predicts Altered Gait Patterns To Reduce Foot Tissue Loading, Jason P. Halloran, Marko Ackermann, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Current computational methods for simulating locomotion have primarily used muscle-driven multibody dynamics, in which neuromuscular control is optimized. Such simulations generally represent joints and soft tissue as simple kinematic or elastic elements for computational efficiency. These assumptions limit application in studies such as ligament injury or osteoarthritis, where local tissue loading must be predicted. Conversely, tissue can be simulated using the finite element method with assumed or measured boundary conditions, but this does not represent the effects of whole body dynamics and neuromuscular control. Coupling the two domains would overcome these limitations and allow prediction of movement strategies guided by …

High-Pressure And High-Temperature Density Measurements Of N-Pentane, N-Octane, 2,2,4-Trimethylpentane, Cyclooctane, N-Decane, And Toluene, Yue Wu

Theses and Dissertations

Information on the density of hydrocarbons at high pressures and temperatures is of great importance in many fields, such as the study of ultra-deep reservoirs up to ~240 MPa and 250°C. However, density data at such high pressures and temperatures are often not available in the literature. In this study, experimental densities are reported for n-pentane, n-octane, 2,2,4-trimethylpentane, cyclooctane, n-decane, and toluene to ~280 MPa and ~250°C. These experimental densities are in good agreement with available literature data, although the literature data for many of these fluids do not extend to the pressures and temperatures utilized in this study.

The Green And Ampt Infiltration Model Accounting For Air Compression And Air Counterflow In The Shallow Water Table Environment: Laboratory Experiments, Yuliya Lukyanets Oct 2010

The Green And Ampt Infiltration Model Accounting For Air Compression And Air Counterflow In The Shallow Water Table Environment: Laboratory Experiments, Yuliya Lukyanets

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Water infiltration into the unsaturated zone especially in a shallow water table environment is affected by air compression ahead of the wetting front and air counterflow. Neglecting air compression in infiltration modeling can overestimate infiltration and infiltration rates, whereas not accounting for air counterflow can underestimate infiltration and infiltration rates due to unrealistic buildup of air pressure resistance ahead of the wetting front. A method, derived on the basis of the Green and Ampt (1911) infiltration model, is introduced to simulate air compression and air counterflow during infiltration into a shallow water table. The method retains the simplicity of the …

Optimal Estimation For Key Parameters Of The Marine Quality Model Using Data-Driven Neural Network, Ming-Chang Li, Shu-Xiu Liang, Zhao-Chen Sun, Guang-Yu Zhang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Marine water quality models are complicated because of their multi-parameter and multi-response characteristics. One major difficulty with water quality models is the accurate estimation of model parameters. In this paper, a new method based on a data-driven model (DDM) is developed to retrieve the value of model parameters. All training data are calculated by numerical water quality models from results of multiparameter matching design cases so the physical properties are not disturbed. The concept is to find the relationship between model parameters and the pollution concentration values of interior stations. Field data are imported into the relationship for inversing optimal …

Hamilton Decomposition Of Complete Bipartite 3-Uniform Hypergraphs, Jirimutu Jirimutu, Jul Wang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The problem of finding a Hamilton decomposition of the complete 3-uniform hypergraph 3 Kn has been solved for n ≡ 2(mod 3), n ≡ 4(mod 6) [2], n ≡ 1(mod 6), n ≡ 0(mod 3) (for 3 , K I n − the complete 3-uniform hypergraph minus a 1- factor) [5]. In this paper, we give the concept of the bipartite hypergraphs and find a Hamilton decomposition of the complete bipartite hypergraph 3 Km,m for m be prime.
