A Thermal Simulation Process Based On Electrical Modeling For Complex Interconnect, Packaging, And 3di Structures, Lijun Jiang, Chuan Xu, Barry J. Rubin, Alan J. Weger, Alina Deutsch, Howard Smith, Alain Caron, Kaustav Banerjee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

To reduce the product development time and achieve first-pass silicon success, fast and accurate estimation of very-large-scale integration (VLSI) interconnect, packaging and 3DI (3D integrated circuits) thermal profiles has become important. Present commercial thermal analysis tools are incapable of handling very complex structures and have integration difficulties with existing design flows. Many analytical thermal models, which could provide fast estimates, are either too specific or oversimplified. This paper highlights a methodology, which exploits electrical resistance solvers for thermal simulation, to allow acquisition of thermal profiles of complex structures with good accuracy and reasonable computation cost. Moreover, a novel accurate closed-form …

Bandwidth-Efficient Frequency-Domain Equalization For Single Carrier Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Underwater Acoustic Communications, Jian Zhang, Yahong Rosa Zheng Nov 2010

Bandwidth-Efficient Frequency-Domain Equalization For Single Carrier Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Underwater Acoustic Communications, Jian Zhang, Yahong Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a single carrier (SC) receiver scheme with bandwidth-efficient frequency-domain equalization (FDE) for underwater acoustic (UWA) communications employing multiple transducers and multiple hydrophones. Different from the FDE methods that perform FDE on a whole data block, the proposed algorithm implements an overlapped-window FDE by partitioning a large block into small subblocks. a decision-directed channel estimation scheme is incorporated with the overlapped-window FDE to track channel variations and improve the error performance. the proposed algorithm significantly increases the length of each block and keeps the same number of training symbols per block, hence achieving better data efficiency without performance …

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A cascaded S-parameter method is proposed in this paper for signal/power integrity analysis of multiple vias in a multilayer printed circuit board (PCB). the proposed method enables efficient and accurate construction and simulation of physics-Based via model for complex multilayer PCB structures involving vias. the physics-Based via model describes the parasitic effects near each via region as well as mutual coupling among different vias. in this model, each via portion between two parallel plates is regarded as a three-port network with two coaxial ports and one radial port between the two plates. a procedure is first developed to obtain the …

An Investigation Of The Influence Of Diaphragm Flexibility On Building Design Through A Comparison Of Forced Vibration Testing And Computational Analysis, Blake Alan Roskelley Nov 2010

An Investigation Of The Influence Of Diaphragm Flexibility On Building Design Through A Comparison Of Forced Vibration Testing And Computational Analysis, Blake Alan Roskelley

Master's Theses

An assessment of the validity of idealizing a concrete diaphragm as rigid was performed through the modal analysis of three existing buildings. Modal analysis was performed both by physical experimentation and computational analysis. Experimental determination of the mode shapes shows that two of the three buildings’ diaphragms exhibited flexible behavior. The experimental results were compared to computational analysis results and were shown to be similar, confirming that that the two building diaphragms are not rigid. As a standard, diaphragms with aspect ratios less than three are permitted to be idealized as rigid per ASCE 7-05. To determine the effect of …

Design And Implementation Of User Level Socket Application Programming Interface With Socket Splitting And Mediation, Scott Walter Holzer Nov 2010

Design And Implementation Of User Level Socket Application Programming Interface With Socket Splitting And Mediation, Scott Walter Holzer

Master's Theses

Over the past few decades, the size and scope of the Internet has grown exponentially. In order to maintain support for legacy clients, new applications and services have been limited by dependence on traditional sockets and TCP, which provide no support for modifying endpoints after connection setup. This forces applications to implement their own logic to reroute communications to take advantage of composable services or handle failover. Some solutions have added socket operations that allow for endpoints to be redirected on the fly, but these have been limited in scope to handling failover and load balancing.

We present two new …

Automated Classification Of Breast Pathology Using Local Measures Of Broadband Reflectance, Ashley M. Laughney, Venkataramanan Krishnaswamy, Pilar Beatriz Garcia-Allende, Olga M. Conde, Wendy A. Wells, Keith D. Paulsen, Brian W. Pogue

Dartmouth Scholarship

We demonstrate that morphological features pertinent to a tissue's pathology may be ascertained from localized measures of broadband reflectance, with a mesoscopic resolution (100-μm lateral spot size) that permits scanning of an entire margin for residual disease. The technical aspects and optimization of a k-nearest neighbor classifier for automated diagnosis of pathologies are presented, and its efficacy is validated in 29 breast tissue specimens. When discriminating between benign and malignant pathologies, a sensitivity and specificity of 91 and 77% was achieved. Furthermore, detailed subtissue-type analysis was performed to consider how diverse pathologies influence scattering response and overall classification efficacy. The …

Structures Of Human Thymidylate Synthase R163k With Dump, Fdump And Glutathione Show Asymmetric Ligand Binding, Lydia M. Gibson, Lesa R. Celeste, Leslie L. Lovelace, Lukasz Lebioda

Faculty Publications

Thymidylate synthase (TS) is a well validated target in cancer chemotherapy. Here, a new crystal form of the R163K variant of human TS (hTS) with five subunits per asymmetric part of the unit cell, all with loop 181-197 in the active conformation, is reported. This form allows binding studies by soaking crystals in artificial mother liquors containing ligands that bind in the active site. Using this approach, crystal structures of hTS complexes with FdUMP and dUMP were obtained, indicating that this form should facilitate high-throughput analysis of hTS complexes with drug candidates. Crystal soaking experiments using oxidized glutathione revealed that …

A Laboratory Study Of Bendway Weirs As A Bank Erosion Countermeasure, Dennis A. Lyn, R. Cunningham Nov 2010

A Laboratory Study Of Bendway Weirs As A Bank Erosion Countermeasure, Dennis A. Lyn, R. Cunningham

JTRP Technical Reports

Bendway weirs are being considered by INDOT as a potential alternative countermeasure for bank erosion at channel bends that might be more environmentally sensitive than the traditional riprap. These are linear structures extending riverwards from the bank to be protected, but unlike the more familiar spur structure, they are intended to be overtopped by the design flow. The flow over the weir crest is supposed to be directed perpendicular to the plane of the weir, and so by appropriate placement of the weir(s), the flow can be directed away from the bank, thus protecting it.

Design guidelines for such structures …

Experimental Evaluation And Implementation Of Post-Tensioning In Concrete Bridge Decks, Julio A. Ramirez, Gerardo Aguilar Nov 2010

Experimental Evaluation And Implementation Of Post-Tensioning In Concrete Bridge Decks, Julio A. Ramirez, Gerardo Aguilar

JTRP Technical Reports

A research program was conducted to evaluate the design recommendations for transverse post-tensioning of bridge decks developed in the FHWA/IN/JTRP/2002-26 (SPR-2409) report. The test specimen consisted of a 40x18 ft cast-in-place concrete deck on precast pretensioned girders. Thirty-two tests were carried out by applying different distributions of transverse post-tensioning force, in combination with a changing number of diaphragms, and two conditions of end-restraint at the supports. The transverse post-tensioning stress ranged from 400 to 1 200 psi and the number of diaphragms was reduced from five to zero.

The main findings support the notion that the presence of diaphragms affects …

A Similarity Matrix For Irish Traditional Dance Music, Padraic Lavin Nov 2010

A Similarity Matrix For Irish Traditional Dance Music, Padraic Lavin

Dissertations

It is estimated that there are between seven and ten thousand Irish traditional dance tunes in existence. As Irish musicians travelled the world they carried their repertoire in their memories and rarely recorded these pieces in writing. When the music was passed down from generation to generation by ear the names of these pieces of music and the melodies themselves were forgotten or changed over time. This has led to problems for musicians and archivists when identifying the names of traditional Irish tunes.

Almost all of this music is now available in ABC notation from online collections. An ABC file …

Control And Repair Of Bridge Deck Cracking, Robert J. Frosch, Sergio Gutierrez, Jacob S. Hoffman Nov 2010

Control And Repair Of Bridge Deck Cracking, Robert J. Frosch, Sergio Gutierrez, Jacob S. Hoffman

JTRP Technical Reports

Cracking of bridge decks poses a significant threat to the lifespan of our nation’s bridges. Cracking has been shown to occur in various climates and geographical areas and can be seen on various types of superstructures. Often these cracks appear before or shortly after opening the bridge to live loads. Cracks in the deck create a path for water and deicing salts to reach the steel, often leading to corrosion of the reinforcement, greatly reducing the durability of the deck. Measures must be taken during design and construction to control bridge deck cracking and prolong the lifespan of bridges. In …

Can Spr Be Used To Interrogate The Double Layer Of Nacl, Brandon Kawula Nov 2010

Can Spr Be Used To Interrogate The Double Layer Of Nacl, Brandon Kawula

Biomedical Engineering

Solutions of reagent grade salt .1, .01, .001, .0001, .00001M were run through a SPR to see if SPR had enough resolution to detect the formation of the electric double layer. We found that NaCl did in fact return a detectable signal. The signal shape seems to depend on concentration. While more study may need to be done to get definite information it looks like SPR can interrogate the double layer.

Removal Of Low Density Sediments By Vegetative Filters, Brent M. Hall Nov 2010

Removal Of Low Density Sediments By Vegetative Filters, Brent M. Hall

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The use of vegetative filter strips (VFS) is a longstanding best management practice for the removal of sediment and other pollutants from overland flow. Many attempts have been made to model the effectiveness of a VFS based upon soil, vegetation, and sediment properties, and also upon flow conditions, but little work has been done to investigate the reliability of the existing models when considering sediments, such as microbial pathogens, that have a lower density than the mineral sediments used for development of the models. The objectives of this study were to: 1) quantify the ability of a VFS to remove …

Dynamic Response Improvement In A Buck Type Converter Using Capacitor Current Feed-Forward Control, Lisheng Shi, Mehdi Ferdowsi, Mariesa Crow Nov 2010

Dynamic Response Improvement In A Buck Type Converter Using Capacitor Current Feed-Forward Control, Lisheng Shi, Mehdi Ferdowsi, Mariesa Crow

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The dynamic performance of dc-dc power electronic converters is mainly determined by the output filtering capacitor and inductor, control loop(s) compensator(s), and the voltage conversion ratio. Normally, a larger capacitance and/or a smaller inductance are not recommended because of the extra cost and size of the capacitor and/or the increment of the inductor current ripple. The capacitor current feed-forward method has gained popularity due its fast dynamic response, simpler structure, and less sensing losses. In applications where a large voltage conversion ratio is needed, dynamic response for a load step-down scenario is worse than that of a load step-up condition. …
