Characterization Of Inconel 718: Using The Gleeble And Varestraint Testing Methods To Determine The Weldability Of Inconel 718, Nathaniel Oscar Knock

Master's Theses

Nickel based superalloys were developed to withstand the severe thermal and mechanical environment associated with rocket propulsion systems and jet engines. In many alloy systems the strength of a component rapidly deteriorates as the operating temperature increases. Nickel based superalloys, however, retain strength over a range of temperatures which includes the operating range for many propulsion systems. This improved performance is accomplished by a combination of solid-solution strengthening, precipitation strengthening and grain-boundary strengthening. Furthermore, super-alloy systems are designed for ease of fabrication, to include machining, welding and heat treating. Inconel 718 was developed to overcome problems with post-weld cracking that …

Interest in business modeling of technology enterprises – the activity of designing the architecture for revenues, costs, products and/or services delivery and the overall value of an enterprise – has risen to prominence with the global crossing of the Internet chasm. However, as several studies have pointed out (c.f., Osterwalder, Pigneur & Tucci, 2005; Teece 2010; Zott & Amit, 2010), the investigations of business models and their fit with the strategy of an enterprise, have received little scholarly attention. In this article we formulate a framework, called ADVISOR, for modeling the business strategies of enterprises in the Interactive Digital Media …

Application Of Differential Evolution To Determine The Hepwm Angles Of A Three Phase Voltage Source Inverter, N Bahari, Z. Salam, Taufik

Electrical Engineering

This paper presents an efficient Differential Evolution (DE) based solution for harmonic elimination pulse-width modulation (HEPWM). The aim is to solve for the set of transcendental equations that determine the switching angles of the HEPWM waveform. The objective function of the DE is designed to minimize (to near zero) the selected harmonics and at the same time allows for the fundamental component of the output voltage to be controlled independently. To verify the method, simulation is carried out using MATLAB simulink. The computed switching angles are applied to a three phase voltage source inverter. Typical results are shown and discussed.

Nanomanufacturing And Analysis Of Novel Integrated Continuous Nanofibers, John E. Hannappel

Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Complex nanostructured materials have great potential for applications in many areas of nanotechnology. This potential is being unlocked by precise control of their nanoscale architecture and properties. Most current methods of creating these nanostructures are expensive and difficult to control, with the majority of techniques resulting in non-continuous nanostructures and nanoparticles. Electrospinning is an economic nanomanufacturing method resulting in continuous nanofibers. The method consists of spinning fiber-forming liquids in high electric fields. In this work, a modified electrospinning process was analyzed. The process utilized two concentric liquids that resulted in integrated continuous hollow or composite nanofibers. A new adjustable co-axial …

A Study Of The Lyapunov Stability Of An Open-Loop Induction Machine, Ahmed Oteafy, John Chiasson Nov 2010

A Study Of The Lyapunov Stability Of An Open-Loop Induction Machine, Ahmed Oteafy, John Chiasson

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The induction motor is widely utilized in industry and exists in a plethora of applications. Until the last 20 years or so, it was primarily used in an open-loop fashion (i.e., balanced sinusoidal voltages, constant load torque and viscous friction) with its inherent stability counted on to allow operation over a wide range of operating conditions. Unlike classical arguments based on the steady-state torque-slip curve, a rigorous analytical stability argument using the full nonlinear dynamical model is presented. In particular, conditions for global asymptotic stability of the induction motor in the sense of Lyapunov are given in terms of the …

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

In this paper, a personal micronavigation system that uses high-resolution gait-corrected inertial measurement units is presented. The goal of this paper is to develop a navigation system that uses secondary inertial variables, such as velocity, to enable long-term precise navigation in the absence of Global Positioning System (GPS) and beacon signals. In this scheme, measured zerovelocity duration from the ground reaction sensors is used to reset the accumulated integration errors from accelerometers and gyroscopes in position calculation. With the described system, an average position error of 4 m is achieved at the end of half-hour walks.

Production Of Anatomical Models From Ct Scan Data, John Brennan

Other resources

Rapid Prototyping (RP) technology was conceived in the mid 1980s as a method of manufacturing models, particularly to support the design of new motor vehicles. However as early as 1995 the potential to take data from medical scanners and generate models of patient anatomy to assist clinicians plan complex surgical procedures had been recognised, albeit by researchers rather than the mainstream medical industry. Over the last 15 years the production of preoperative planning models has increased dramatically and moreover, the potential to produce customised implants recognised.

Although RP technology is now established in the medical field work is still on …
