Transitional Flow Prediction Of A Compressor Airfoil, Vivek Hariharan Jan 2010

Transitional Flow Prediction Of A Compressor Airfoil, Vivek Hariharan

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The steady flow aerodynamics of a cascade of compressor airfoils is computed using a two-dimensional thin layer Navier-Stokes flow solver. The Dhawan and Narasimha transition model and Mayle‟s transition length model were implemented in this flow solver so that transition from laminar to turbulent flow could be included in the computations. A method to speed up the convergence of the fully turbulent calculations has been introduced. In addition, the effect of turbulence production formulations and including streamline curvature correction in the Spalart-Allmaras turbulence model on the transition calculations is studied. These transitional calculations are correlated with the low and high …

Characterization Of Poly(Methyl Methacrylate Based Nanocomposites Enhanced With Carbon Nanotubes, Andrew Jonathan Placido

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The viscoelastic relaxation dynamics of a series of poly(methyl methacrylate) [PMMA] based nanocomposites filled with carbon nanotubes have been studied using dynamic mechanical analysis and broadband dielectric spectroscopy. The networks were prepared using four methods: (i) melt mixing, (ii) solution processing, (iii) in-situ polymerization, and (iv) polymer grafting. Nanotube modifications included surface oxidation via acid exposure and surface functionalization for polymer grafting. The effect of variations in processing method and nanotube modification on glass transition temperature (Tg) and relaxation dynamics was investigated. The relaxation behavior of the nanocomposites was sensitive to processing method and nanotube functionalization. Nanotube loading …

Detection Of Roof Boundaries Using Lidar Data And Aerial Photography, Andrew David Gombos Jan 2010

Detection Of Roof Boundaries Using Lidar Data And Aerial Photography, Andrew David Gombos

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The recent growth in inexpensive laser scanning sensors has created entire fields of research aimed at processing this data. One application is determining the polygonal boundaries of roofs, as seen from an overhead view. The resulting building outlines have many commercial as well as military applications. My work in this area has created a segmentation algorithm where the descriptive features are computationally and theoretically simpler than previous methods. A support vector machine is used to segment data points using these features, and their use is not common for roof detection to date. Despite the simplicity of the feature calculations, the …

The major objective of this dissertation is to determine the degree (if any) to which information technology usage, specifically the use of information technology to automate and …

Dielectrophoretic Choking Phenomenon In A Converging-Diverging Microchannel, Ye Ai, Shizhi Qian, Sheng Liu, Sang W. Joo Jan 2010

Dielectrophoretic Choking Phenomenon In A Converging-Diverging Microchannel, Ye Ai, Shizhi Qian, Sheng Liu, Sang W. Joo

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Experiments show that particles smaller than the throat size of converging-diverging microchannels can sometimes be trapped near the throat. This critical phenomenon is associated with the negative dc dielectrophoresis arising from nonuniform electric fields in the microchannels. A finite-element model, accounting for the particle-fluid-electric field interactions, is employed to investigate the conditions for this dielectrophoretic (DEP) choking in a converging-diverging microchannel for the first time. It is shown quantitatively that the DEP choking occurs for high nonuniformity of electric fields, high ratio of particle size to throat size, and high ratio of particle's zeta potential to that of microchannel. © …

Fusion Of Imprecise Qualitative Information, Florentin Smarandache, Xinde Li, Xianzhong Dai, Jean Dezert

Branch Mathematics and Statistics Faculty and Staff Publications

In this paper, we present a new 2-tuple linguistic representation model, i.e. Distribution Function Model (DFM), for combining imprecise qualitative information using fusion rules drawn from Dezert-Smarandache Theory (DSmT) framework. Such new approach allows to preserve the precision and efficiency of the combination of linguistic information in the case of either equidistant or unbalanced label model. Some basic operators on imprecise 2-tuple labels are presented together with their extensions for imprecise 2-tuple labels. We also give simple examples to show how precise and imprecise qualitative information can be combined for reasoning under uncertainty. It is concluded that DSmT can deal …

Effect Of Free-Edges On Melt Pool Geometry And Solidification Microstructure In Beam-Based Fabrication Methods, Joy Elizabeth Davis

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Laser and electron beam-based additive manufacturing of Ti-6Al-4V are under consideration for application to aerospace components. A critical concern for these processes is the ability to obtain a consistent and desirable microstructure and corresponding mechanical properties of the deposit. Based on the Rosenthal solution for a moving point-heat source, recent work has developed simulation-based process maps for the thermal conditions controlling microstructure (grain size and morphology) in beam-based deposition of semi-infinite geometries, where a steady-state melt pool exists away from free-edges. In the current study, the Rosenthal solution is modified to include the effects of free-edges. This is accomplished by …

High spatial resolution PIV experiments are performed in the x-y plane at two different spanwise positions to compare the turbulent boundary layers over smooth and rough forward-facing-steps as well as the rough step's two coarse scale-resolution approximations. The Reynolds number based on the step's mean height, Reh, is 3450 and the ratio of the boundary layer thickness to the step's height is δ/h = 8. The roughness topography on the top surface of the rough step is replicated from a realistic turbine blade and is intrinsically three-dimensional and highly irregular. The surface topographies of the coarse scale-resolution …

Distributed Turbo Product Coding Techniques Over Cooperative Communication Systems, Esam Ali Obiedat Jan 2010

Distributed Turbo Product Coding Techniques Over Cooperative Communication Systems, Esam Ali Obiedat

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, we propose a coded cooperative communications framework based on Distributed Turbo Product Code (DTPC). The system uses linear block Extended Bose-Chaudhuri-Hochquenghem (EBCH) codes as component codes. The source broadcasts the EBCH coded frames to the destination and nearby relays. Each relay constructs a product code by arranging the corrected bit sequences in rows and re-encoding them vertically using EBCH as component codes to obtain an Incremental Redundancy (IR) for source's data. Under this frame, we have investigated a number of interesting and important issues. First, to obtain, independent vertical parities from each relay in the same code …

This capability moves development beyond the use of traditional user performance metrics to include system intelligence measures …

Heat Transfer Augmentation In A Narrow Rectangular Duct With Dimples Applied To A Single Wall, Carson Slabaugh Jan 2010

Heat Transfer Augmentation In A Narrow Rectangular Duct With Dimples Applied To A Single Wall, Carson Slabaugh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Establishing a clean and renewable energy supply is the preeminent engineering challenge of our time. Turbines, in some form, are responsible for more than 98 percent of all electricity generated in the United State and 100 percent of commercial and military air transport. The operation of these engines is clearly responsible for significant consumption of hydrocarbon fuels and, in turn, emission of green house gases into the atmosphere. With such wide-scale implementation, it is understood that even the smallest increase in the operating efficiency of these machines can lead to enormous improvements over the current energy situation. These effects can …

Validation Of Wideband Ocean Emissivity Radiative Transfer Model, Sonya Crofton

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Radiative Transfer Models (RTM) have many applications in the satellite microwave remote sensing field, such as the retrieval of oceanic and atmospheric environmental parameters, including surface wind vectors and sea surface temperatures, integrated water vapor, cloud liquid, and precipitation. A key component of the ocean RTM is the emissivity model used to determine the brightness temperature (Tb) at the ocean’s surface. A new wideband ocean emissivity RTM developed by the Central Florida Remote Sensing Laboratory (CFRSL) calculates ocean emissivity over a wide range of frequencies, incidence angles, sea surface temperatures (SST), and wind speed. This thesis presents the validation of …

Learning From Geometry In Learning For Tactical And Strategic Decision Domains, Jason Gauci Jan 2010

Learning From Geometry In Learning For Tactical And Strategic Decision Domains, Jason Gauci

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are an abstraction of the low-level architecture of biological brains that are often applied in general problem solving and function approximation. Neuroevolution (NE), i.e. the evolution of ANNs, has proven effective at solving problems in a variety of domains. Information from the domain is input to the ANN, which outputs its desired actions. This dissertation presents a new NE algorithm called Hypercube-based NeuroEvolution of Augmenting Topologies (HyperNEAT), based on a novel indirect encoding of ANNs. The key insight in HyperNEAT is to make the algorithm aware of the geometry in which the ANNs are embedded and …

Development Of Optical Coherence Tomography For Tissue Diagnostics, Panomsak Meemon Jan 2010

Development Of Optical Coherence Tomography For Tissue Diagnostics, Panomsak Meemon

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Microvasculature can be found in almost every part of the human body, including the internal organs. Importantly, abnormal changes in microvasculature are usually related to pathological development of the tissue cells. Monitoring of changes in blood flow properties in microvasculature, therefore, provides useful diagnostic information about pathological conditions in biological tissues as exemplified in glaucoma, diabetes, age related macular degeneration, port wine stains, burn-depth, and potentially skin cancer. However, the capillary network is typically only one cell in wall thickness with 5 to 10 microns in diameter and located in the dermis region of skin. Therefore, a non-invasive flow imaging …

Effect Of Fluorination On Partitioning Behavior And Bilayer Self Assembly, Vivian Aramide Ojogun Jan 2010

Effect Of Fluorination On Partitioning Behavior And Bilayer Self Assembly, Vivian Aramide Ojogun

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Fluorinated systems are defined by unique properties that offer advantages in drug delivery, material synthesis and industrial applications. In comparison to their hydrocarbon counterparts, the design of fluorinated solutes for tailored applications is limited by the inability to predict the effect of fluorination on phase behavior. This work examines and interprets the influence of fluorination on the phase behavior of fluorinated solutes and surfactants, with emphasis on their impact on vesicle bilayers.

Thermodynamic partitioning of functionalized series of fluorinated and hydrocarbon nicotinate prodrugs fashioned to promote solubility in a fluorocarbon solvent (perfluorooctyl bromide; PFOB) is measured. Predictive approaches are also …

Integration Of The Regression-Based Land Use Model And The Combined Trip Distribution-Assignment Transportation Model, Meiwu An

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Regional growth caused the emergence of traffic congestion and pollution in the past few decades, which have started to affect small urban areas. These problems are not only related to transportation system design but also to land use planning. There has been growing recognition that the relationship between land use and transportation needs to be understood and analyzed in a consistent and systematic way. Integrated urban models have recently been introduced and implemented in several metropolitan areas to systematically examine the relationship between land use and transportation. The general consensus in the field of integrated urban models is that each …

Research In Technology Education, Philip A. Reed (Editor), James E. Laporte (Editor)

STEMPS Faculty Books

Due to the laboratory-based nature of technology and engineering education programs, professionals in our field have often focused on the resources in our classrooms and laboratories and the instructional methodologies used to address specific concepts. Formal research into content and practice has often given way to “what seems right”. New curriculum is constantly being introduced (based on what is occurring in business and industry), yet the inclusion for those evolving concepts in courses and programs is typically not verified.

Hence, the importance of the 2010 CTTE yearbook and its focus on the dire need for an aggressive research agenda in …

The goal of this study was to investigate three potential ways that the soluble organic nitrogen (N) fraction of wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents, termed effluent organic N (EON), could contribute to coastal eutrophication - direct biological removal, photochemical release of labile compounds, and salinity-mediated release of ammonium (NH4+). Effluents from two WWTPs were used in the experiments. For the bioassays, EON was added to water from four salinities (∼0 to 30) collected from the James River (VA) in August 2008, and then concentrations of N and phosphorus compounds were measured periodically over 48 h. Bioassay results, based …
