An Analytical Model For Rotator Cuff Repairs, A. Aurora, Jorge E. Gatica, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert, J. A. Mccarron, Kathleen A. Derwin

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Background

Currently, natural and synthetic scaffolds are being explored as augmentation devices for rotator cuff repair. When used in this manner, these devices are believed to offer some degree of load sharing; however, no studies have quantified this effect. Furthermore, the manner in which loads on an augmented rotator cuff repair are distributed among the various components of the repair is not known, nor is the relative biomechanical importance of each component. The objectives of this study are to (1) develop quasi-static analytical models of simplified rotator cuff repairs, (2) validate the models, and (3) predict the degree of load …

Numerical Investigation Of Mechanical Durability In Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells, Ahmet Kusoglu, Michael H. Santare, Anette M. Karlsson, Simon Cleghorn, William B. Johnson Jan 2010

Numerical Investigation Of Mechanical Durability In Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells, Ahmet Kusoglu, Michael H. Santare, Anette M. Karlsson, Simon Cleghorn, William B. Johnson

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The relationship between the mechanical behavior and water transport in the membrane electrode assembly (MEA) is numerically investigated. Swelling plays a key role in the mechanical response of the MEA during fuel cell operation because swelling can be directly linked to the development of stresses. Thus, in the model introduced here, the stresses and the water distribution are coupled. Two membranes are studied: unreinforced perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) and an experimental reinforced composite membrane. The results suggest that open-circuit voltage operations lead to a uniform distribution of stresses and plastic deformation, whereas under current-load operation, the stresses and the plastic deformation …

Alternative Matching Schemes For Automatic Fingerprint Identification Systems, Michael Jason Futer Jan 2010

Alternative Matching Schemes For Automatic Fingerprint Identification Systems, Michael Jason Futer

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

Biometrics is a recognition technology that uses the unique behavioral and physiological traits of the human body as identifiers. The fingerprint is one of the oldest and most widely used forms of biometric identifiers. In this thesis, an automatic fingerprint identification system designed by a previous Electrical Engineering graduate student at The University of Texas at Arlington is upgraded with the purpose of improving matching accuracy. A review of the baseline automatic fingerprint identification system is provided as a reference point for improvements in the system. Then, improvements to the image enhancement stage of the baseline system are discussed. They …

A Ph Sensor Based On A Flexible Substrate, Wen-Ding Huang Jan 2010

A Ph Sensor Based On A Flexible Substrate, Wen-Ding Huang

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

pH sensor is an essential component used in many chemical, food, and bio-material industries. Conventional glass electrodes have been used to construct pH sensors, however, have some disadvantages. Glass electrodes are easily affected by alkaline or HF solution, they require a high input impedance pH meter, they often exhibit a sluggish response. In some specific applications, it is also difficult to use glass electrodes for in vivo biomedical or food monitoring applications due to the difficulty of size miniaturization, planarization and polymerization based on current manufacturing technologies. In this work, we have demonstrated a novel flexible pH sensor based on …

Distribution Network Contingency Analysis And Contingency Detection With The Consideration Of Load Models, Qiaohui Hu Jan 2010

Distribution Network Contingency Analysis And Contingency Detection With The Consideration Of Load Models, Qiaohui Hu

Electrical Engineering Dissertations - Archive

The electric utility market environment has changed quite radically during recent years due to the process of deregulation. This has changed the asset management towards a capital controlled business where owners are trying to maximize their profits with cost optimization. To keep up with the increase demands on high reliability and high quality delivery systems, many utilities endeavor to rationalize their system operations with more intelligent control schemes and facilities. A lot of issues under uncertainty such as load growth, quality of supply and environmental impact affect the reliability of the distribution system. Power outage is the most serious challenge …

Cs 790-01: Knowledge Representation For The Semantic Web, Pascal Hitzler Jan 2010

Cs 790-01: Knowledge Representation For The Semantic Web, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science & Engineering Syllabi

Semantic Web is a maturing field of technology that continues to be the emphasis of much focused research and industrial investigation. The central idea behind Semantic Web is to enhance data on the World Wide Web by so-called metadata, which describes the meaning (semantics) of the data and thus makes it available for processing in intelligent systems. In this course we cover in depth the standardized knowledge representation languages for expressing metadata, called ontology languages. We will in particular cover the Resource Description Framework RDF and the Web Ontology Language OWL, both of which are recommended standards by the World …
