Locking compression plates are proven to be safe for use in open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) especially in osteoporotic bones. Because of various combinations of holes, the system provides more options for clinicians to use either locking screws or non-locking screws. This clinical research introduces screw like plugs which can be used along with the screws in case of locking compression plates. Experimental work was performed to determine the effectiveness of the plugs. The results showed that there is not a significant difference between the groups which used plugs and did not use the plugs, both in case of …

Intelligent Irrigation Zone Splitter, David Boeck
Intelligent Irrigation Zone Splitter, David Boeck
Electrical Engineering
The intelligent irrigation zone splitter allows easy expansion of an existing irrigation controller. To expand on an existing controller a new wire is needed to run between the controller and the valve. This path may be buried beneath driveways, patios, and sidewalks. The intelligent irrigation zone splitter uses an already existing wire path to control two valves and create a new watering zone. This controller uses timing and memory to split the total watering time of the zone.

Development Of An Optical Fiber-Based Corrosion Detection Sensor Based On Laser Light Reflection, Manjunatha Shenoy
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive
Corrosion plays a detrimental effect on the structural integrity of many engineering structures. It can compromise the safe operation of these structures by forming corrosion pits that deteriorates the structural surfaces and causes stress concentrations. Therefore, it is critical that corrosions are detected before structural integrity is compromised and repair becomes economically prohibitive. However, corrosions usually occur at intricate places that are hard to inspect visually. Manual inspection of the structures for corrosions requires dismantling the structures, which incurs high maintenance costs and could potentially cause damage to the components. One approach to reduce this cost is to detect and …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The first part of this dissertation presents a comprehensive study of quantum dot (QD) lasers threshold characteristics. The threshold temperature dependence of a QD laser diode is studied in different limits of p-doping, hole level spacing and inhomogeneous broadening. Theoretical analysis shows that the threshold current of a QD laser in the limit of uniform QDs is not temperature independent and actually more temperature sensitive than the quantum well laser. The results also explain the experimental trends of negative characteristic temperature observed in QD lasers and clarify how the carrier distribution mechanisms inside and among the QDs affect the threshold …

Transfer And Development Length Of Strands In Post-Tensioned Members After Anchor Head Failure, Elie El Zghayar
Transfer And Development Length Of Strands In Post-Tensioned Members After Anchor Head Failure, Elie El Zghayar
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Post-tensioning tendons in segmental bridge construction are often only anchored within the deviator and pier segments. The effectiveness of the post-tensioning (PT) system is therefore dependent on proper functioning of the anchorages. On August 28, 2000 a routine inspection of the Mid-Bay Bridge (Okaloosa County, Florida) revealed corrosion in numerous PT tendons. Moreover, one of the 19-strand tendons was completely slacked, with later inspection revealing a corrosion-induced failure at the pier anchor location. Anchorage failure caused all PT force to transfer to the steel duct located within the pier segment that in turn slipped and caused the tendon to go …

Output Feedback Control Of A Quadrotor Uav Using Neural Networks, Travis Dierks, Sarangapani Jagannathan
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, a new nonlinear controller for a quadrotor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is proposed using neural networks (NNs) and output feedback. the assumption on the availability of UAV dynamics is not always practical, especially in an outdoor environment. Therefore, in this work, an NN is introduced to learn the complete dynamics of the UAV online, including uncertain nonlinear terms like aerodynamic friction and blade flapping. Although a quadrotor UAV is underactuated, a novel NN virtual control input scheme is proposed which allows all six degrees of freedom (DOF) of the UAV to be controlled using only four control …

Novel Dynamic Representation And Control Of Power Systems With Facts Devices, Shahab Mehraeen, Jagannathan Sarangapani, Mariesa Crow
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
FACTS devices have been shown to be useful in damping power system oscillations. However, in large power systems, the FACTS control design is complex due to the combination of differential and algebraic equations required to model the power system. In this paper, a new method to generate a nonlinear dynamic representation of the power network is introduced to enable more sophisticated control design. Once the new representation is obtained, a back stepping methodology for the UPFC is utilized to mitigate the generator oscillations. Finally, the neural network approximation property is utilized to relax the need for knowledge of the power …

A large nonlinear dynamic system usually has complex dynamic modes corresponding to the system's eigenvalues. These eigenvalues govern the system's local behavior and thus are critical information for designing system operation and control strategies. Without the availability of the system's analytical model, which is often the case for large nonlinear systems, the system's eigenvalues need to be estimated. a linear echo state network (ESN) based method for extracting observable eigenvalues of a dynamic system together with the participation factors of these eigenvalues in the accessible system states is presented in this paper. a linear ESN is first trained to track …

On The Power Allocation For Relay Networks With Finite-Alphabet Constraints, Weiliang Zeng, Mingxi Wang, Chengshan Xiao, Jianhua Lu
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
In this paper, we investigate the optimal power allocation scheme for relay networks with finite-alphabet constraints. It has been shown that the previous work utilizing various design criteria with the Gaussian inputs assumption may lead to significant loss for a practical system with finite constellation set constraint, especially when signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is in medium-to-high regions, or when the channel coding rate is medium to high. an optimal power allocation scheme is proposed to maximize the mutual information for the relay networks under discrete-constellation input constraint. Numerical examples show that significant gain can be obtained compared to the conventional counterpart …
