Imbalance Response Of A Four Degree Of Freedom Rigid Rotor Supported By Hybrid Three Pad Air Foil Bearing, Prajwal Krishna Shetty Jan 2010

Imbalance Response Of A Four Degree Of Freedom Rigid Rotor Supported By Hybrid Three Pad Air Foil Bearing, Prajwal Krishna Shetty

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Air foil bearings (AFB's) are widely used in small to midsized turbomachinery. They provide safer, cleaner and cheaper bearing operation. They are simple in construction, offer very low drag friction and have very high reliability at high speed operations. A major advantage of air foil bearings compared to conventional rigid surface bearings is their superior dynamic performance in rotor bearing systems. Since there is no contact between the rotor and bearing surface, the air foil bearings have a higher service life compared to rigid surface bearings. Hybrid AFB's operate under both hydrodynamic and hydrostatic condition. The present study is a …

Evaluation Of Trenchless Renewal Methods For Potable Water Distribution Pipes, Abhay A. Jain Jan 2010

Evaluation Of Trenchless Renewal Methods For Potable Water Distribution Pipes, Abhay A. Jain

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Undoubtedly, potable water pipes, as part of an underground infrastructure system, play a key role in maintaining quality of life, health and well being of human kind. As these potable water pipes reach the end of their useful life, they create high maintenance costs, loss of flow capacity, decreased water quality, and increased dissatisfaction. Trenchless renewal methods (TRMs) are a medium to renew deteriorated potable water pipes, thus decreasing leakage loss, emergency maintenance costs and customer complaints. TRMs also maintain the quality of the water leaving the treatment plant. America's drinking water systems faces an annual shortfall of at least …

An Investigation Of Productivity Loss Due To Outdoor Noise Conditions, Shripad Dilip Maldikar Jan 2010

An Investigation Of Productivity Loss Due To Outdoor Noise Conditions, Shripad Dilip Maldikar

Civil Engineering Theses - Archive

Most people in day to day life at one time or other get irritated or distracted by surrounding noises. The irritation might have resulted in minor aggravation or may have been dramatic enough to hinder their work. This leads us to think whether there are any losses in the efficiency of construction workers due to surrounding varying noise conditions, or if they naturally adjust to their acoustic environment. In an effort to answer this question, this study on productivity loss due to varying sound conditions was conducted. It was found that, the efficiency of laborers was inversely proportional to the …

Morphological, Structural, And Optical Studies Of Undoped And Doped-Zno Nanostructure., Ramin Yousefi

Student Works (2010-2019)

Research concerning one-dimensional nanomaterials has grown tremendously ever since carbon nanotubes were discovered by Iijima (1991), silicon nanowires were grown by Lieber's group (1998), and ZnO nanowires and nanobelts were found by Wang's group from Georgia Tech (Pan et al., 2001). Such researches on one-dimensional structures have been one of the most important branches of science during recent decades. We can now observe the impact of these studies on the technology of one-dimensional materials and also the advanced prospect of developing new technologies. Based on this motivation, this thesis attempts to investigate some unknown properties of ZnO nanostructures as …

A Study On The Corrosion Behavior Of Nanocrystalline Nickel In Aqueous Environments, Anjana Shyam Sundar Jan 2010

A Study On The Corrosion Behavior Of Nanocrystalline Nickel In Aqueous Environments, Anjana Shyam Sundar

Material Science and Engineering Theses - Archive

Nanocrystalline materials possess considerably enhanced properties arising from their small grain size. Significant interest has been paid in the past to their mechanical and physical properties. Very little attention has been attracted by their electrochemical behavior, which is expected to be affected by the significant volume fraction of grain boundaries. In the present study, corrosion experiments were conducted in nanocrystalline nickel in two entirely different solutions in order to obtain a better understanding of its corrosion behavior. This is of particular interest to MEMS and NEMS devices where electroplated nanocrystalline nickel is the metal of choice. The corrosion behavior of …

Leakage Current Reduction Of Mos Capacitor Induced By Rapid Thermal Processing, Yichun Wang Jan 2010

Leakage Current Reduction Of Mos Capacitor Induced By Rapid Thermal Processing, Yichun Wang

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

With the MOSFET scaling practice, the performance of IC devices is improved tremendously as we experienced in the last decades. However, the small semiconductor devices also bring some drawbacks among which the high gate leakage current is becoming increasingly serious.

This thesis work is focused on the of gate leakage current reduction in thin oxide semiconductor devices. The method being studied is the Phonon Energy Coupling Enhancement (PECE) effect induced by Rapid Thermal Processing (RTP). The basic MOS capacitors are used to check improvements of leakage current reduction after appropriate RTP process.

Through sets of experiments, it is found that …

Correlating The Magnitude And Spatial Gradient Of Alternans, Stuart Traxel Jan 2010

Correlating The Magnitude And Spatial Gradient Of Alternans, Stuart Traxel

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Electrical restitution has been shown to inaccurately predict the occurrence of alternans of action potential duration. A new method using the spatial gradient of alternans (SGA) is proposed to predict alternans and cardiac electrical stability. A simulated 1-D strand of tissue was used to compare indexes computed from restitution methods and the SGA method to changes in the amplitude of alternans using different electro-physiological alterations. The SGA method correlated better with changes in the amplitude of alternans than restitution methods for a decrease in the transient outward current (Ito) and conduction velocity. Restitution methods correlated better with changes …

Nitrous Oxide Cooling In Hybrid Rocket Nozzles, Patrick Lemieux Jan 2010

Nitrous Oxide Cooling In Hybrid Rocket Nozzles, Patrick Lemieux

Mechanical Engineering

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, has developed an innovative program of experimental research and development on hybrid rocket motors (where the fuel and the oxidizer are in different phases prior to combustion). One project currently underway involves the development of aerospike nozzles for such motors. These nozzles, however, are even more susceptible to throat ablation than regular converging diverging nozzles, due the nature of their flow expansion mechanism. This paper presents the result of a recent development project focused on reducing throat ablation in hybrid rocket motor nozzles. Although the method …

Experimental And Cfd Investigations Of Lifted Tribrachial Flames, Zhiliang Li Jan 2010

Experimental And Cfd Investigations Of Lifted Tribrachial Flames, Zhiliang Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Experimental measurements of the lift-off velocity and lift-off height, and numerical simulations were conducted on the liftoff and stabilization phenomena of laminar jet diffusion flames of inert-diluted C3H8 and CH4 fuels. Both non-reacting and reacting jets were investigated, including effects of multi-component diffusivities and heat release (buoyancy and gas expansion). The role of Schmidt number for non-reacting jets was investigated, with no conclusive Schmidt number criterion for liftoff previously known in similarity solutions. The cold-flow simulation for He-diluted CH4 fuel does not predict flame liftoff; however, adding heat release reaction leads to the prediction of liftoff, which is consistent with …

Thermal Performance Of Cryogenic Multilayer Insulation At Various Layer Spacings, Wesley Louis Johnson Jan 2010

Thermal Performance Of Cryogenic Multilayer Insulation At Various Layer Spacings, Wesley Louis Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Multilayer insulation (MLI) has been shown to be the best performing cryogenic insulation system at high vacuum (less than 10-3 torr), and is widely used on spaceflight vehicles. Over the past 50 years, many numerous investigations of MLI have yielded a general understanding of the many variables associated with MLI. MLI has been shown to be a function of variables such as warm boundary temperature, the number of reflector layers, and the spacer material in between reflectors, the interstitial gas pressure and the interstitial gas. Because conduction between reflectors increases with the thickness of the spacer material, and yet the …

Design Of Low-Capacitance And High-Speed Electrostatic Discharge (Esd) Devices For Low-Voltage Protection Applications, You Li Jan 2010

Design Of Low-Capacitance And High-Speed Electrostatic Discharge (Esd) Devices For Low-Voltage Protection Applications, You Li

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Electrostatic discharge (ESD) is defined as the transfer of charge between bodies at different potentials. The electrostatic discharge induced integrated circuit damages occur throughout the whole life of a product from the manufacturing, testing, shipping, handing, to end user operating stages. This is particularly true as microelectronics technology continues shrink to nano-metric dimensions. The ESD related failures is a major IC reliability concern and results in a loss of millions dollars to the semiconductor industry each year. Several ESD stress models and test methods have been developed to reproduce the real world ESD discharge events and quantify the sensitivity of …

Lithocholic acid (LCA) is a secondary bile acid with the concentration being identical to that of cholesterol in the hepatic bile and gallbladder. It has a rigid, nearly planar hydrophobic steroid nucleus, with four hydrogen atoms and one hydroxyl group directed toward the concave …

Tuning The Properties Of Nanomaterials As Function Of Surface And Environment, Ajay Karakoti Jan 2010

Tuning The Properties Of Nanomaterials As Function Of Surface And Environment, Ajay Karakoti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nanotechnology has shaped the research and development in various disciplines of science and technology by redefining the interdisciplinary research. It has put the materials science at the forefront of technology by allowing the researchers to engineer materials with properties ranging from electronics to biomedical by using materials as diverse as ceramics to just plain carbon. These exceptional properties are achieved by minimizing the dimension of particles in such smaller domains that the boundary between the individual atoms, ions or cluster of particles is very small. This results in a change in conventional properties of particles from continuum physics to quantum …
