Mems Multi-Actuated Bridge Switch, D Cabrera, L Fuller Jan 2010

Mems Multi-Actuated Bridge Switch, D Cabrera, L Fuller

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

A MEMS multi-actuated bridge switch is developed and created using the RIT sub-micron CMOS process as a way to create a high speed switch with good isolation, power consumption and low loss. The bridge was imaged using a SEM before and after the bridge release. Not much difference could be seen, prompting further investigation. There was a suspicious looking bump in the middle of the bridge that led us to believe that the TEOS sacrificial layer was buried underneath polysilicon. A cross-cut of the bridge was done where the bumps could be seen transversally. A highlight etch was done, confirming …

Scaling Of Si/Sige Resonant Interband Tunnel Diodes (May 2010), Arnob L. Alam

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

Resonant Interband Tunnel Diodes (RITD) with device sizes ranging from r=20μm to r=50nm (mask defined radii) were manufactured using an e-beam lithography and dry-etch process. The peak to valley current-ratio (PVCR) and peak current density (jpeak) of the devices were measured. The devices showed high series resistance, and currents and PVCR did not scale in a predictable pattern.

Fabrication Of Fully Isolated Nfets Using Oxidized Porous Silicon, A Chadwick, K D. Hirschman Jan 2010

Fabrication Of Fully Isolated Nfets Using Oxidized Porous Silicon, A Chadwick, K D. Hirschman

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

SOI (Silicon on Insulator) technology is an option in improving device performance as smaller devices run into scaling challenges. The devices for this study were fabricated using a FIPOS (Fully Isolated Porous Oxidized Silicon) process, which results in localized SOJ active regions. The oxidation of electrochemically etched porous silicon (PSi) has demonstrated success in the formation of device quality localized SOl for CMOS applications [1,2]. The formation of PSi can be done selectively by controlling the Fermi level in areas to be etched or not etched, which is typically (lone by adjusting the level of (loping [1]. An alternative method …

Power Reduction In A Microprocessor (May 2010), Steven P. Washer

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

The concept of power reduction is a growing concern in IC design. This article contains the steps taken to redesign a 4-bit microprocessor for lower dynamic power. Measurements are performed of initial power and power consumption after applying new designs. The major reductions for this μP come in the form or logic reduction, transistor stacking, pulse generated latches and width reductions and modifications. Overall the outcome shows a significant amount of energy reduced and the project successfully explored power consumption considerations.

Design And Fabrication Of Memristors, Tal R. Nagourney Jan 2010

Design And Fabrication Of Memristors, Tal R. Nagourney

Journal of the Microelectronic Engineering Conference

This paper details the design and fabrication of memristors in the RIT Semiconductor and Microsystem Fabrication Laboratory. Two methods of partially oxidizing titanium were explored, reactive sputtering and thermal oxidation. It is determined that thermal oxidation allows for greater control over the oxidation process due to an inability to sufficiently control the gas flow in the sputter chamber. Electron beam lithography is used to define holes in oxide in which the memristors will be fabricated. Due to issues with the lithography, fabrication is incomplete and ongoing.

A Review Of Programmable Logic Controllers In Control Systems Education, Michael R. Foster, Chad Hammerquist, Robert Melendy Jan 2010

A Review Of Programmable Logic Controllers In Control Systems Education, Michael R. Foster, Chad Hammerquist, Robert Melendy

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

A Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) is a standard industrial control device that provides a simple, yet robust, method of controlling manufacturing and dynamic processes. As a result of their low cost, adaptability, and reliability, PLCs are by far the most common control mechanism used by manufacturing businesses of all sizes for environment control, food processing, motion control, and automated test equipment. Yet even though PLCs are heavily used by industry, their use in teaching control theory concepts is uncommon for mechanical engineering programs. Traditional control systems engineering courses focus on the theory and mathematics of continuous-based control systems and rarely …

Reflections Of College Students Promoting Engineering Through Biomechanical Outreach Activities Indicate Dual Benefits, Kimberly Edginton Bigelow Jan 2010

Reflections Of College Students Promoting Engineering Through Biomechanical Outreach Activities Indicate Dual Benefits, Kimberly Edginton Bigelow

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

Recent work by the National Academy of Engineering revealed that the public has a poor understanding of what engineers actually do on a day-to-day basis. This issue is compounded for non-traditional fields in engineering, such as biomechanical engineering. This is particularly problematic as such fields could draw interest from students not interested in traditional engineering careers, resulting in increased diversity.

To address this, mechanical engineering students taking an elective course, Biomechanical Engineering, were given an outreach assignment to teach at least one individual under the age of 18 about the field of biomechanical engineering through a hands-on activity. Students worked …

Electromagnetic Fields, Power Losses, And Resistance Of High-Frequency Magnetic Devices, Daniel Joseph Whitman Jan 2010

Electromagnetic Fields, Power Losses, And Resistance Of High-Frequency Magnetic Devices, Daniel Joseph Whitman

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

The operation of dc-dc PWM converters requires magnetic components that operate at high frequencies and carry large currents. At such frequencies the skin and proximity effects cause a substantial increase in power losses and ac resistance. This thesis reviews existing one dimensional analytical work on the prediction of these losses and, beginning with an inductor, derives expressions for the electromagnetic fields and power losses within the winding as well as the ac resistance of the device. The results of the inductor analysis are then extended to examine these quantities in transformers of various winding configurations. It is shown that proximity …

Process Design For Aeration Of Facial Prosthetic, Nathaniel J. Urciuoli Jan 2010

Process Design For Aeration Of Facial Prosthetic, Nathaniel J. Urciuoli

Industrial and Manufacturing Engineering

Facial prosthetics are becoming a necessary step for the recovery of injured veterans and civilians who have suffered severe facial burning. Current users of such prosthetics are not able to wear the prosthetic for an extended period of time due to uncomfortable conditions created by the silicone material. A solution for this problem was to develop a process for creating small holes similar to skin pores that will both ventilate and aid in the evaporation of accumulated sweat under the prosthetic.

The main steps of this process were to create a flexible fixture capable of supporting and securing the prosthetic …

In Search Of Something More: My Path Towards International Service-Learning In Engineering Education, Margaret Pinnell Jan 2010

In Search Of Something More: My Path Towards International Service-Learning In Engineering Education, Margaret Pinnell

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Publications

My personal and professional travels led me toward global education, in particular the University of Dayton (UD) program Engineers in Technical Humanitarian Opportunities for Service-Learning (ETHOS). I do not believe I ever intended to become part of an international engineering education program. In fact, I think the international piece was just a bonus. What really drew me to the ETHOS program was what initially draws our students to the program - a desire to "help" people. In order for the reader to understand how I ended up being involved in global education through the ETHOS program, I must first explain …

Efficacy Of A Final Lab Practicum And Lab Reports For Assessment In A Fundamentals Electric Circuits Laboratory, Edward Carl Greco Jr., James D. Reasoner, Daniel W. Bullock, Carlos Castillo, Patricia Buford, Gill Richards Jan 2010

Efficacy Of A Final Lab Practicum And Lab Reports For Assessment In A Fundamentals Electric Circuits Laboratory, Edward Carl Greco Jr., James D. Reasoner, Daniel W. Bullock, Carlos Castillo, Patricia Buford, Gill Richards

Faculty Publications - Electrical Engineering

In a fundamental electrical engineering laboratory course, the traditional team based approach to laboratory structure with two or more members per lab team was not as effective for teaching basic laboratory skills and knowledge as a lab structure that allowed students to perform laboratory exercises individually throughout the semester. The laboratory report was insensitive and insufficient to measure the difference in the laboratory abilities and knowledge from these two groups. In order to assess the students' laboratory knowledge and abilities, it was necessary to develop a new assessment instrument that would be sufficient for this purpose. The students' performance on …

Response-Calibration Techniques For Antenna-Coupled Infrared Sensors, Peter Krenz Jan 2010

Response-Calibration Techniques For Antenna-Coupled Infrared Sensors, Peter Krenz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Infrared antennas are employed in sensing applications requiring specific spectral, polarization, and directional properties. Because of their inherently small dimensions, there is significant interaction, both thermal and electromagnetic, between the antenna, the antenna-coupled sensor, and the low-frequency readout structures necessary for signal extraction at the baseband modulation frequency. Validation of design models against measurements requires separation of these effects so that the response of the antenna-coupled sensor alone can be measured in a calibrated manner. Such validations will allow confident extension of design techniques to more complex infrared-antenna configurations. Two general techniques are explored to accomplish this goal. The extraneous …

The Size Ellect On The Infrared Spectra Of Condensed Media Under Conditions Of Id, 2d And 3d Dielectric Confinement, Igor I. Shaganov, Tatiana S. Perova, Vasily A. Melnikov, Kevin Berwick Jan 2010

The Size Ellect On The Infrared Spectra Of Condensed Media Under Conditions Of Id, 2d And 3d Dielectric Confinement, Igor I. Shaganov, Tatiana S. Perova, Vasily A. Melnikov, Kevin Berwick

Articles

A general expression for the dielectric loss spectrum of an absorbing composite medium was obtained from a Maxwell-Garnett general equation. This expression was simplified for the cases of one, two and three dimensional dielectric confinement in both ordered and disordered thin layers, rods (wires) and spheres of absorbing medium which are considered as mesoparticles or mesoscopic molecules. This theoretical approach was verified experimentally using high purity organic liquids with strong absorption bands in the infrared range. Three organic liquids, namely benzene, chloroform and carbon disulphide, were measured in various dielectric confinement configurations using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy with a …

Double Quantum Dot Photoluminescence Mediated By Incoherent Reversible Energy Transport, S. Yu Kruchinin, A. V. Federov, A. V. Baranov, T. S. Perova, Kevin Berwick

Articles

We present a theoretical study of the stationary photoluminescence of two, direct-gap, semiconductor nanocrystals, taking into account electronic excitation energy-transfer processes due to electrostatic interaction. The results obtained here allow for the incoherent reversible energy transport that occurs when the intraband relaxation rate in a quantum dot acceptor is comparable to, or less than, the energy-transfer rate. We investigate the secondary emission of two different electronic level schemes that can be realized experimentally, obtain analytical expressions for the luminescence differential cross section, and perform an analysis of its spectrum. It is shown that when excitation is not in resonance with …

A Macrobending Singlemode Fiber Refractive Index Sensor For Low Refractive Index Liquids, Pengfei Wang, Yuliya Semenova, Yong Li, Qiang Wu, Gerald Farrell

Articles

An all-fiber refractive index sensor with a simple configuration is proposed and investigated. The proposed fiber refractometer consists of a full-loop structure of bare high-bend loss singlemode fiber-1060XP, employing the well-known whispering gallery mode (WGM) effect induced by the evanescent wave excitation to measure the refractive index of an external medium. A competitive sensitivity is achieved (average 725.76nm/RIU at a bend diameter of 19.3mm) compared with other fiber-optic sensors, plus benefits resulting from simplicity, low cost and ease of fabrication.

Study Of The Effect Of Source Signal Bandwidth On Ratiometric Wavelength Measurement, Qiang Wu, Yuliya Semenova, Ginu Rajan, Pengfei Wang, Gerald Farrell

Articles

We derive an analytic equation for a ratiometric wavelength measurement system and analyze the influence of the optical source signal bandwidth. Our investigation shows that in a particular optical sensing system, the higher the bandwidth of the optical signal, the better resolution the system will achieve. Experiments based on two types of optical signals (output signal of a tunable laser and a fiber Bragg grating) were carried out, and experimental results verified both the simulation results and the theoretical analysis.

Ellipsometric Study Of Single-Crystal Γ-Inse From 1.5 To 9.2 Ev, S. G. Choi, D. E. Aspnes, A. L. Fuchser, C. Martinez-Tomas, V. Muñoz Sanjosé, D. H. Levi

United States Department of Energy: Publications

We report the component E ┴ c of the pseudodielectric-function tensor <ε(E)> = <ε1(E)> + i< ε2(E)> of γ-phase single-crystal InSe, obtained from 1.5 to 9.2 eV by vacuum-ultraviolet spectroscopic ellipsometry with the sample at room temperature. Overlayer artifacts were reduced as far as possible by measuring fresh surfaces prepared by cleavage. Accurate critical-point energies of observed structures were obtained by a combined method of spectral analysis.

A new dc high voltage spin-polarized photoelectron gun has been constructed that employs a compact inverted-geometry ceramic insulator. Photogun performance at 100 kV bias voltage is summarized.

I. INTRODUCTION

All of the nuclear physics experiments conducted at the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab) receive electron beams from a dc high voltage spin-polarized GaAs photoemission gun. Since 1995, the year the first polarized electron source was installed at CEBAF [1], there have been four different photogun designs with each new gun an improvement over its predecessor. The most recent design employs …
