Air-Exposed Microbial Fuel Cells And Screening Techniques, Justin C. Biffinger, Bradley R. Ringeisen
Air-Exposed Microbial Fuel Cells And Screening Techniques, Justin C. Biffinger, Bradley R. Ringeisen
United States Navy: Publications
Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) harvest energy from a wide variety of natural carbon sources to produce electricity at neutral pH and ambient temperatures. To date, standard H2/O2 PEMFC technology has yet to generate significant power under those conditions. Because most environments on earth are exposed to significant levels of oxygen, we believe the transition from sediment based MFCs to oxygen-tolerant MFCs is necessary. This transition would require both a way to simultaneously sequester the metal-reducing microbes and reduce the overall concentration of oxygen in the anode chamber. Recent work suggests that power can be generated with significant …

Probing Electron Transfer Mechanisms In Shewanella Oneidensis Mr-1 Using A Nanoelectrode Platform And Single-Cell Imaging, Ziaocheng Jiang, Jinsong Hu, Lisa A. Fitzgerald, Justin C. Biffinger, Ping Xie, Bradley R. Ringeisen, Charles M. Lieber
United States Navy: Publications
Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) represent a promising approach for sustainable energy production as they generate electricity directly from metabolism of organic substrates without the need for catalysts. However, the mechanisms of electron transfer between microbes and electrodes, which could ultimately limit power extraction, remain controversial. Here we demonstrate optically transparent nanoelectrodes as a platform to investigate extracellular electron transfer in Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, where an array of nanoholes precludes or single window allows for direct microbeelectrode contacts. Following addition of cells, short-circuit current measurements showed similar amplitude and temporal response for both electrode configurations, while in situ optical imaging demonstrates …

Fuzzy Logic Learning For Predictive Feedback Estimation In A Radiant Heat System, Matthew R. Rickey
Fuzzy Logic Learning For Predictive Feedback Estimation In A Radiant Heat System, Matthew R. Rickey
Browse all Theses and Dissertations
High temperature thermal testing is used to validate the effectiveness of thermal protection systems (TPS) and to simulate aerodynamic heating in high speed flight vehicle structures. Silicon controlled rectifiers (SCR) are utilized to drive resistive heating elements and producing temperatures up to 5000 degrees Fahrenheit. Thermocouples used to provide feedback to the control system have a high probability of failure at extreme temperatures. Traditional solutions include switching to redundant thermocouples, changing to an open-loop control scheme, or using power as the control signal. The first methods is limited in that redundant thermocouples are also not completely reliable. Both open-loop control …
Using Simulation Systems For Decision Support, Andreas Tolk
Using Simulation Systems For Decision Support, Andreas Tolk
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications
This chapter describes the use of simulation systems for decision support in support of real operations, which is the most challenging application domain in the discipline of modeling and simulation. To this end, the systems must be integrated as services into the operational infrastructure. To support discovery, selection, and composition of services, they need to be annotated regarding technical, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic, dynamic, and conceptual categories. The systems themselves must be complete and validated. The data must be obtainable, preferably via common protocols shared with the operational infrastructure. Agents and automated forces must produce situation adequate behavior. If these requirements …

Challenges For Human, Social, Cultural, And Behavioral Modeling, S. K. Numrich, Andreas Tolk
Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications
Today's military focus has moved away from the force-on-force battlefield of the past century and into the domain of irregular warfare and its companion security, stability, transition and reconstruction missions. With that change in focus has come a need to examine the operational environment from a wider perspective, one that includes the whole range of human experiences and circumstances. As the set of factors and list of players expands, the need for reliable modeling and simulation increases, if for no other reason than to help the human decision maker make sense of this expanded decision space. However, to do this, …
On The Benefits Of In-Flight System Identification For Autonomous Airdrop Systems, Michael Ward, Mark Costello, Nathan Slegers
On The Benefits Of In-Flight System Identification For Autonomous Airdrop Systems, Michael Ward, Mark Costello, Nathan Slegers
Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering
A unique feature of airdrop systems is the inherent and large variability in flight dynamic characteristics. The same physical article dropped on two different occasions will exhibit significantly different dynamic response. The problem only becomes worse for different test articles. Control systems for autonomous airdrop systems explicitly or implicitly assume knowledge of the flight dynamic characteristics in some way, shape, or form. A question facing autonomous airdrop designers is whether to use precomputed dynamic characteristics inside the control law, or to compute the needed flight dynamic characteristics in-flight and subsequently employ them in the control law. This paper establishes conditions …
Efficient Tether Dynamic Model Formulation Using Recursive Rigid-Body Dynamics, Brad Hembree, Nathan Slegers
Efficient Tether Dynamic Model Formulation Using Recursive Rigid-Body Dynamics, Brad Hembree, Nathan Slegers
Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering
A computationally efficient discrete model for low-strain tethers used in many engineering applications is developed without the use of elastic elements. The tether is modelled using N links, with each link treated as a body of revolution where it is assumed the tether spin is negligible to the dynamics, resulting in each link having only two degrees of freedom. A recursive algorithm is developed for the dynamic equations, with the solution procedure being an order N method requiring only a 2 x 2 matrix inversion, resulting in approximately half the computations of the general recursive algorithm. A comparison between the …
Metaheuristics For The Integrated Machine Allocation And Layout Problem, Juan Jaramillo, Alan Mckendall
Metaheuristics For The Integrated Machine Allocation And Layout Problem, Juan Jaramillo, Alan Mckendall
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The Integrated Machine Allocation and Layout Problem (IMALP) is the problem of assigning a set of machines (including machine replicas) to locations while assigning product flows to machines such that Material Handling Cost is minimised. A new mathematical formulation, a Tabu Search (TS) heuristic, and a Memetic Algorithm (MA) are presented for the IMALP. The algorithms were evaluated using a set of test problems available in the literature. TS and the MA obtained equal or better solutions for the dataset than previous techniques presented in the literature. More specifically, TS obtained better solutions in 47% of the instances, and MA …
The Generalised Machine Layout Problem, Juan Jaramillo, Alan Mckendall
The Generalised Machine Layout Problem, Juan Jaramillo, Alan Mckendall
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The Generalised MAchine Layout Problem (GMALP) is a generalisation of the integrated machine and layout problem, which is an extension of the machine layout problem. More specifically, the GMALP is the designing of a facility layout by defining the product mix, selecting the number of machines to be used, assigning these machines to the plant floor, and assigning products to machines such that total profit is maximised. Moreover, the GMALP integrates the quadratic assignment problem with a multicommodity flow problem. Therefore, the GMALP is a computationally intractable problem. Consequently, a mixed integer nonlinear programming model was developed and used to …
Heuristics For The Dynamic Facility Layout Problem With Unequal-Area Departments, Alan Mckendall, Artak Hakobyan
Heuristics For The Dynamic Facility Layout Problem With Unequal-Area Departments, Alan Mckendall, Artak Hakobyan
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
The dynamic facility layout problem (DFLP) is the problem of finding positions of departments on the plant floor for multiple periods (material flows between departments change during the planning horizon) such that departments do not overlap, and the sum of the material handling and rearrangement costs is minimized. In this paper, the departments may have unequal-areas and free orientations, and the layout for each period is generated on the continuous plant floor. Because of the complexity of the problem, only small-size problems can be solved in reasonable time using exact techniques. As a result, a boundary search (construction) technique, which …

By making our electricity supply more secure, reliable and versatile will mean that we reduce our reliance upon oil, gas and solid fuels, which mostly exist outside of Ireland and the European community. The majority of our fuel is imported and this makes our economy dependent on outside interests and out of our control. Even more importantly as the world’s fossil fuel reserves are running out and electricity demand is ever increasing.
If we make our electricity networks secure and designed to the highest standards we can import and export electrical energy more easily as our demands change, for example …
Social Enterprise: An Overlooked Approach To Promoting Sustainable Economic Regeneration, Gerard Doyle
Social Enterprise: An Overlooked Approach To Promoting Sustainable Economic Regeneration, Gerard Doyle
Reports
Across Europe, social enterprises are making a significant impact on communities, particularly those blighted by high levels of unemployment, poverty and disadvantage. According to the European Commission, they represent 2 million enterprises (i.e. 10 per cent of all European businesses) and employ over 11 million paid employees (the equivalent of 6 per cent of the working population of the EU). Social enterprises are present in almost every sector of the economy, such as banking, insurance, agriculture, craft, various commercial services, and health and social services. The benefits of social enterprises are many, but in economic terms, they can support the …

Algae And Biodiesel: Patenting Energized As Green Goes Commercial, Matthew R. Priess, Stanley P. Kowalski
Law Faculty Scholarship
In the twenty-first century, predominant dependence on fossil fuels as energy resources will not be sustainable. Developing and commercializing green energy innovations will be an essential component of the transition to a more diversified energy economy. Algal biodiesel is one of the most promising green fuels because of its potential as a renewable and sustainable fuel source without displacing food crops. Algal biodiesel research and development are necessary early steps towards a transition to a green energy economy. The strategic use of strong patent portfolios will drive this by attracting investment, incentivizing innovation and accelerating commercialization. Whereas algal biodiesel research …

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Novel die-stacking schema using through-wafer interconnects require vias to be filled with electroplated Cu, resulting in thick copper films, and requiring an aggressive first-step CMP. This work investigates the effects of microstructure on CMP of copper films, which are not presently well understood. Bulk and local removal rates were investigated for several different microstructures. Surface orientation maps were created and the orientations of individual grains were correlated with topographical data to elucidate local removal behavior. Cu removal depends on the details of the microstructure, and certain microstructures allowed for either faster or more uniform removal of thick Cu films.

Voltage-controlled spin electronics is crucial for continued progress in information technology. It aims at reduced power consumption, increased integration density and enhanced functionality where non-volatile memory is combined with highspeed logical processing. Promising spintronic device concepts use the electric control of interface and surface magnetization. From the combination of magnetometry, spin-polarized photoemission spectroscopy, symmetry arguments and first-principles calculations, we show that the (0001) surface of magnetoelectric Cr2O3 has a roughness-insensitive, electrically switchable magnetization. Using a ferromagnetic Pd/Co multilayer deposited on the (0001) surface of a Cr2O3 single crystal, we achieve reversible, room-temperature isothermal switching …

Estimating Information Amount Under Uncertainty: Algorithmic Solvability And Computational Complexity, Vladik Kreinovich, Gang Xiang
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Measurement results (and, more generally, estimates) are never absolutely accurate: there is always an uncertainty, the actual value x is, in general, different from the estimate X. Sometimes, we know the probability of different values of the estimation error dx=X-x, sometimes, we only know the interval of possible values of dx, sometimes, we have interval bounds on the cdf of dx. To compare different measuring instruments, it is desirable to know which of them brings more information - i.e., it is desirable to gauge the amount of information. For probabilistic uncertainty, this amount of information is described by Shannon's entropy; …

Oscillatory And Monotonic Modes Of Long-Wave Marangoni Convection In A Thin Film, Sergey Shklyaev, Mikhail Khenner, Alexei Alabuzhev
Mathematics Faculty Publications
We study long-wave Marangoni convection in a layer heated from below. Using the scaling k=O Bi, where k is the wave number and Bi is the Biot number, we derive a set of amplitude equations. Analysis of this set shows presence of monotonic and oscillatory modes of instability. Oscillatory mode has not been previously found for such direction of heating. Studies of weakly nonlinear dynamics demonstrate that stable steady and oscillatory patterns can be found near the stability threshold.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents components of an on-going research project aimed towards developing a miniature soft robot for urban search and rescue (USAR). The three significant contributions of the thesis are verifying the water hammer actuation previous work, developing an estimator of water hammer impulse direction from hose shape, and creating the infrastructure for distributed cognitive networks. There are many technical issues in designing soft robots, in terms of perception, actuation, cognition, power, physical structure and so on. We are focusing on actuation and cognition issues in this thesis. We investigated water hammer actuation as an alternative system which provides a …

Electrohydrodynamic Atomization For Improved Macromolecular Drug Delivery, Michelle Zeles-Hahn
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
With advances in drug research, the use of biological therapeutics is becoming a reality. Unfortunately, methods for processing and delivering these fragile macromolecules often limit their therapeutic potential. For this dissertation, we explore the aerosolization of macromolecules by way of electrohydrodynamic atomization (EHDA) and how this method can be used to process and deliver therapeutics. EHDA employs a high voltage to break a column of liquid into drops. It was unknown if or how the residual charge left of the resulting droplets would affect lung cells. An in vitro experiment was conducted to spray aerosolized DNA, by way of EHDA, …

Computational Fluid Dynamic Optimization And Design For The Airborne Laser System, Matthew James Opgenorth
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The Airborne Laser (ABL) was designed to destroy any ballistic missile shortly after launch that could be a threat to the United States and its allies. The ABL uses several lasers to accomplish the destruction of the ballistic missile, most notably the high powered Chemical Oxygen Iodine Laser (COIL). The COIL is a complex device that could be improved upon in several areas that will result in overall weight reduction, refinement of beam quality, and increased magazine capacity.
This dissertation presents novel design and optimization techniques coupled with fluid dynamics to improve the performance of the COIL system. The focus …

The ability of the metal reducer Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 to generate electricity in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) depends on the activity of a predicted type IV prepilin peptidase; PilD. Analysis of an S. oneidensis MR-1 pilD mutant indicated that it was deficient in pili production (Msh and type IV) and type II secretion (T2S). The requirement for T2S in metal reduction has been previously identified, but the role of pili remains largely unexplored. To define the role of type IV or Msh pili in electron transfer, mutants that lack one or both pilus biogenesis systems were generated and analyzed; …

In-Vivo Testing Of Vertically Aligned Nanowire Implantable Titanium Electrodes In The Rattus Norvegicus Hippocampus, Lauren Kegley
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
Miniaturized multielectrode arrays are MEMS devices that have found use as neural prosthetics (Neuro-MEMS). As implants, they can interface with neurons as sensors or actuators and help compensate for loss of sensory input, motor control, or cognitive functions. The microelectrodes studied here were developed in-house. They have a vertically aligned gold nanowire array and are mounted on a sturdy titanium needle with a fine gauge. Hence, the bill of materials and design characteristics encourage their use as a neural probe. For this study, a probe was tested in vivo for signal acquisition in the hippocampus of a Rattus Norvegicus (Sprague …

The Web is a continuously evolving environment, since its content is updated on a regular basis. As a result, the traditional usage-based approach to generate recommendations that takes as input the navigation paths recorded on the Web page level, is not as effective. Moreover, most of the content available online is either explicitly or implicitly characterized by a set of categories organized in a taxonomy, allowing the page-level navigation patterns to be generalized to a higher, aggregate level. In this direction, the authors present the Frequent Generalized Pattern (FGP) algorithm. FGP takes as input the transaction data and a hierarchy …
