Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy (PAS) techniques can be utilized as a sensitive probe of defects in materials. Studying these microscopic defects is very important for a number of industries in order to predict material failure or structural integrity. We have been developing gamma‐induced pair‐production techniques to produce positrons in thick samples ( ∼4–40 g/cm2, or ∼0.5–5 cm in steel). These techniques are called ‘Accelerator‐based Gamma‐induced Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy’ (AG‐PAS). We have begun testing the capabilities of this technique for imaging of defect densities in thick structural materials. As a first step, a linear accelerator (LINAC) was employed to produce photon beams …

Selection Of Switching Sites In All-Optical Nework Topology Design, Shivashis Saha, Eric D. Manley, Jitender S. Deogun Aug 2009

Selection Of Switching Sites In All-Optical Nework Topology Design, Shivashis Saha, Eric D. Manley, Jitender S. Deogun

School of Computing: Technical Reports

In this paper, we consider the problem of topology design for optical networks. We investigate the problem of selecting switching sites to minimize total cost of the optical network. The cost of an optical network can be expressed as a sum of three main factors: the site cost, the link cost, and the switch cost. To the best of our knowledge, this problem has not been studied in its general form as investigated in this paper. We present a mixed integer quadratic programming (MIQP) formulation of the problem to find the optimal value of the total network cost. We also …

Traffic Signal Control With Swarm Intelligence, David Renfrew, Xiao-Hua Yu Aug 2009

Traffic Signal Control With Swarm Intelligence, David Renfrew, Xiao-Hua Yu

Electrical Engineering

Traffic signal control is an effective way to regulate traffic flow to avoid conflict and reduce congestion. The ACO (Ant Colony Optimization) algorithm is an optimization technique based on swarm intelligence. This research investigates the application of ACO to traffic signal control problem. The decentralized, collective, stochastic, and self-organization properties of this algorithm fit well with the nature of traffic networks. Computer simulation results show that this method outperforms the conventional fully actuated control, especially under the condition of high traffic demand.

Preparation And Characterization Of An Electrospun Gelatin/Dendrimer Hybrid Nanofiber Dressing, Alicia P. Smith-Freshwater

Theses and Dissertations

A novel dendritic wound dressing was designed and characterized for its potential to treat chronic wounds. Comprised of gelatin, dendrimer, synthetic polymer and antibiotics, the dressing was electrospun to mimic the natural extracellular matrix (ECM). Gelatin is biocompatible, biodegradable, non-toxic, and easily available. The antibiotic, doxycycline, has the ability to inhibit matrix metalloproteinases. Matrix metalloproteinases, which occur in excess in chronic wounds, degrade the reconstituted ECM. Starburst™ polyamidoamine (PAMAM) dendrimer G3.5, which provides a versatile and structurally controlled architecture to construct nanomedicine, was covalently bonded to the gelatin backbone and electrospun into nanofibers with gelatin, doxycycline and stabilizing polymers. The …

Development Of Guidelines For Deformable And Rigid Switch In Ls-Dyna Simulation, Ling Zhu Aug 2009

Development Of Guidelines For Deformable And Rigid Switch In Ls-Dyna Simulation, Ling Zhu

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

LS-Dyna simulations have been widely used in research and design to reduce fiscal and time costs. In order to improve the simulation’s efficiency, the components which experience negligible deformations are usually modeled as rigid bodies. However, the use of rigid bodies is always restricted. Though the use of more rigid bodies can save computing resources for a particular simulation, less rigid bodies are preferred for building a model in order to broaden its applications. Meanwhile, if a simulation task has multiple events, the application of rigid bodies in the particular simulation is always minimized so that it can satisfy all …

Ruminococcus flavefaciens is a predominant cellulolytic rumen bacterium, which forms a multi-enzyme cellulosome complex that could play an integral role in the ability of this bacterium to degrade plant cell wall polysaccharides. Identifying the major enzyme types involved in plant cell wall degradation is essential for gaining a better understanding of the cellulolytic capabilities of this organism as well as highlighting potential enzymes for application in improvement of livestock nutrition and for conversion of cellulosic biomass to liquid fuels.

Numerical Characterizaton Of The Inlet Flow In Eleven Radial Flow Turbomachines, Nathan O. Packard Aug 2009

Numerical Characterizaton Of The Inlet Flow In Eleven Radial Flow Turbomachines, Nathan O. Packard

Theses and Dissertations

Statistics based models have been developed previously to predict a priori the performance of new radial flow compressors and pumps and to model test data of previously designed and tested machines. Unfortunately, critical dynamics in the inlet region of the machines were neglected. Consequently, room for improvement in the previous modeling exists. Historical practice has placed a static pressure tap on the shroud just upstream of the impeller leading edge for experimental characterization. The previously developed statistics based models rely on this measured data. However, the location of the tap may be vulnerable to high gradients which would decrease the …

Controlled Release Of Fluoride From Poly(Ethylene-Co-Vinyl Acetate) Films, Shadeed Khan Aug 2009

Controlled Release Of Fluoride From Poly(Ethylene-Co-Vinyl Acetate) Films, Shadeed Khan

Theses and Dissertations

The development of aesthetically unattractive white spots is a concern for patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment. Due to poor oral hygiene during treatment, accumulation of plaque around orthodontic brackets causes bacterial fermentation reactions producing acids that dissolve the mineral enamel. Such dissolution results in white spot formation, an early sign of dental caries. In principal, to inhibit the appearance of these spots during treatment, fluoridated elastomeric o-rings might be employed. Once placed around brackets, these o-rings should release fluoride therapeutically for at least 30 days, after which the orthodontist may replace them. At the present time, such fluoride-releasing o-rings are …

Piezoresistive Models For Polysilicon With Bending Or Torsional Loads, Gerrit T. Larsen Aug 2009

Piezoresistive Models For Polysilicon With Bending Or Torsional Loads, Gerrit T. Larsen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents new models for determining piezoresistive response in long, thin polysilicon beams with either axial and bending moment inducing loads or torsional loads. Microelectromechanical (MEMS) test devices and calibration methods for finding the piezoresistive coefficients are also presented for both loading conditions. For axial and bending moment inducing loads, if the piezoresistive coefficients are known, the Improved Piezoresistive Flexure Model (IPFM) is used to find the new resistance of a beam under stress. The IPFM first discretizes the beam into small volumes represented by resistors. The stress that each of these volumes experiences is calculated, and the stress …

Isogeometric Finite Element Analysis Using T-Splines, Jingang Li

Theses and Dissertations

Non-uniform rational B-splines (NURBS) methodology is presented, on which the isogeometric analysis is based. T-splines are also introduced as a surface design methodology, which are a generalization of NURBS and permit local refinement. Isogeometric analysis using NURBS and T-splines are applied separately to a structural mechanics problem. The results are compared with the closed-form solution. The desirable performance of isogeometric analysis using T-splines on engineering analysis is demonstrated.

Experimental Characterization Of Flow Induced Vibration In Turbulent Pipe Flow, Andrew S. Thompson Aug 2009

Experimental Characterization Of Flow Induced Vibration In Turbulent Pipe Flow, Andrew S. Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents results of an experimental investigation that characterizes the wall vibration of a pipe with turbulent flow passing through it. Specifically, experiments were conducted using a water flow loop to address three general phenomena. The topics of investigation were: 1) How does the pipe wall vibration depend on the average flow speed, pipe diameter, and pipe thickness for an unsupported pipe? 2) How does the behavior change if the pipe is clamp supported at various clamping lengths? 3) What influence does turbulence generation caused by holed baffle plates exert on the pipe response? A single pipe material (PVC) …

Deposition Of Particulate From Coal-Derived Syngas On Gas Turbine Blades Near Film Cooling Holes, Weiguo Ai Aug 2009

Deposition Of Particulate From Coal-Derived Syngas On Gas Turbine Blades Near Film Cooling Holes, Weiguo Ai

Theses and Dissertations

Synfuel from gasification of coal, biomass, and/or petroleum coke is an alternative to natural gas in land-based industrial gas turbines. However, carryover fine particulate in the syngas may lead to a considerable amount of deposition on turbine blades, which reduces component life and system performance. Deposition experiments on film-cooled turbine components were performed in an accelerated test facility to examine the nature of flyash deposits near film cooling holes. Experimental results indicate that deposition capture efficiency decreased with increased blowing ratio. Shaped holes exhibited more span-wise coverage than cylindrical holes and effectively reduced deposition. The TBC layer increased surface temperature, …

A System Level Approach To D-Fiber Electric Field Sensing, Joshua Monroe Kvavle Aug 2009

A System Level Approach To D-Fiber Electric Field Sensing, Joshua Monroe Kvavle

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation presents the novel creation of a hybrid D-fiber electro-optic polymer electric field sensor. The sensor is made by removing a portion of the cladding from a D-shaped optical fiber, thus exposing the core to interaction with external stimulus. Then, an electro-optic polymer is deposited, partially replacing the core of the fiber. Next, the polymer is poled to endow it with electro-optic properties. This sensor is packaged in order to restore its mechanical strength. Because D-fiber is not intrinsically compatible with standard optical equipment it is fusion spliced to standard polarization maintaining fiber. Finally the sensor is tested for …

Off-Axis Stiffness And Piezroresistive Sensing In Large-Displacement Linear-Motion Microelectromechanical Systems, David G. Smith Aug 2009

Off-Axis Stiffness And Piezroresistive Sensing In Large-Displacement Linear-Motion Microelectromechanical Systems, David G. Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Proper positioning of Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) components influences the functionality of the device, especially in devices where the motion is in the range of hundreds of micrometers. There are two main obstacles to positioning: off-axis displacement, and position determination. This work studies four large-displacement devices, their axial and transverse stiffness, and piezoresistive response. Methods for improving the device characteristics are described. The folded-beam suspension, small X-Bob, large X-Bob and double X-Bob were characterized using non-dimensional metrics that measure the displacement with regard to the size of the device, and transverse stiffness with regard to axial stiffness. The stiffness in each …

Analysis Of The Sediment Transport Capabilities Of Tuflow, Cameron G. Jenkins Aug 2009

Analysis Of The Sediment Transport Capabilities Of Tuflow, Cameron G. Jenkins

Theses and Dissertations

The need to know how river morphology changes due to sedimentation is increasingly important as we attempt to predict future events. Engineers use numeric models to predict effects of changed morphology on river systems. The numerical model Two-dimensional Unsteady Flow (TUFLOW) has recently added, and is continually improving, its capability to model sediment transport in rivers and coastal systems. This paper evaluates the new tools for modeling sediment transport presently contained within TUFLOW and compares these tools with analytical and laboratory case studies. Currently TUFLOW simulates combined bed and suspended load transport of noncohesive sediments under the effect of currents …

Liquefaction Mitigation In Silty Sands Using Stone Columns With Wick Drains, Michael James Quimby Aug 2009

Liquefaction Mitigation In Silty Sands Using Stone Columns With Wick Drains, Michael James Quimby

Theses and Dissertations

Stone column treatment is commonly used to mitigate liquefaction hazard in sandy soils. Research and experience indicate that this method is effective for clean sands but that it may not be effective for silts and sands with fines contents greater than 15-20%. An alternative to the stone column method involves supplementing stone column treatment with pre-fabricated vertical wick drains installed prior to the stone columns installation. Although this method is used in practice, there has not been a formal academic study of its effectiveness. This thesis evaluates seven different case histories where wick drains were used and one where wick …

Efficient Simulation Of Fluid Flow, David Hannasch, Monika Neda Aug 2009

Efficient Simulation Of Fluid Flow, David Hannasch, Monika Neda

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

We are computationally investigating fluid flow models for physically correct predictions of flow structures. Models based on the idea of filtering the small scales/structures and also the Navier-Stokes equations which are the fundamental equations of fluid flow, are numerically solved via the continuous finite element method. Crank-Nicolson and fractional-step theta scheme are used for the discretization of the time derivative, while the Taylor-Hood and Mini elements are used for the discretization is space. The effectiveness of these numerical discretizations in time and space are examined by studying the accuracy of fluid characteristics, such as drag, lift and pressure drop.

The Effects Of Pressure On Wide Bandgap Gan Semiconductors, William Kang, Linda Tran, Eunja Kim

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

Gallium nitride (GaN) is a group-III nitride semiconductor; which may prove useful in developing optical instruments that operate under high ambient pressures. The purpose of this project is to examine the properties of GaN under varying conditions. The methods used in this experiment consist of modeling free energy as a function of lattice constants; calculating bond lengths, bond strengths, and bulk moduli; and comparing the resultant data with values in published literature. We will also compare these results with experimental data drawn from x-ray diffraction scans. By doing so, we hope to determine whether gallium nitride is suitable for use …

Fabrication Of Anisotropic Nanostructures On Solid Substrates For Applications As Optically Active Surfaces, Mohan Krishna Vattipalli Aug 2009

Fabrication Of Anisotropic Nanostructures On Solid Substrates For Applications As Optically Active Surfaces, Mohan Krishna Vattipalli

Dissertations and Theses

Analysis of the vibrational energy levels in molecules using Raman Spectroscopy is a popular analytical method amongst today's optical technologies. Unlike fluorescence microscopy, the Raman emission doesn't undergo the process of photobleaching, which leads to short lived signal collection. The only downside with this approach is the small absorption cross-section resulting in a low intensity of the emission signal. One of the approaches used to boost this weak signal is Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS). My research efforts have been focused on how to create a novel SERS substrate with aligned patterns of Au/Ag nanoparticle deposited metals of a particular …

Electrocardiogram (Ecg) Signal Modeling And Noise Reduction Using Wavelet Neural Networks, Suranai Poungponsri, Xiao-Hua Yu

Electrical Engineering

Electrocardiogram (ECG) signal has been widely used in cardiac pathology to detect heart disease. In this paper, wavelet neural network (WNN) is studied for ECG signal modeling and noise reduction. WNN combines the multi-resolution nature of wavelets and the adaptive learning ability of artificial neural networks, and is trained by a hybrid algorithm that includes the adaptive diversity learning particle swarm optimization (ADLPSO) and the gradient descent optimization. Computer simulation results demonstrate this proposed approach can successfully model the ECG signal and remove high-frequency noise.

Development Of A Melt Pool Tracking Vision System For Laser Deposition, Todd E. Sparks, Lie Tang, Frank W. Liou Aug 2009

Development Of A Melt Pool Tracking Vision System For Laser Deposition, Todd E. Sparks, Lie Tang, Frank W. Liou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper chronicles the development of a vision system for tracking melt pool morphology in the laser metal deposition process. This development is to augment an existing temperature feedback control system. Monitoring both the temperature and shape of the melt pool is necessary because of the effects of local geometry on the cooling rate at the melt pool. Temperature feedback alone cannot accommodate this effect without complex process planning. The vision system's hardware, software, and integration into the laser deposition system's controller is detailed in this paper. Preliminary testing and the effects on depositionquality is also discussed.

Evaluation Of Direct Diode Laser Deposited Stainless Steel 316l On 4340 Steel Substrate For Aircraft Landing Gear Application, Tian Fu, Todd E. Sparks, Frank W. Liou, Joseph William Newkirk, Zhiqiang Fan, Syamala Rani Pulugurtha, Jianzhong Ruan, Hsin-Nan Chou

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

300M steel is used extensively for aircraft landing gears because of its high strength, ductility and toughness. However, like other high-strength steels, 300M steel is vulnerable to corrosion fatigue and stress corrosion cracking, which can lead to catastrophic consequences in the landing gear. Stainless steels offer a combination of corrosion, wear, and fatigue properties. But for an aircraft landing gear application a higher surface hardness is required. A laser cladding process with fast heating and cooling rates can improve the surface hardness. AISI 4340 steel is used as a lower cost alternative to 300M due to its similar composition. In …
