Contribution Based Priority Assessment In A Web-Based Intelligent Argumentation Network For Collaborative Software Development, Xiaoqing Frank Liu, Maithili Satyavolu, Ming-Chuan Leu

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

Decision making is an important aspect in a collaborative software development process which involves a complex process of conflict resolution. the priority of the participants plays a vital role in conflict resolution as the decision-making process involves many participants from multiple perspectives. the priority assessment methods used in the process so far are usually static in nature, i.e., the priorities of the participants remain constant throughout the decision-making process. in order to make the collaborative system closer to real world scenarios, we incorporate dynamic priority assessment into a web-Based collaborative system based on intelligent computational argumentation, which was developed in …

Work In Progress - Role Of Faculty In Promoting Lifelong Learning, Jonathon Stolk, Susan M. Lord, Candice Stefanou, John Chen, Katharyn E. K. Nottis, Michael J. Prince

Mechanical Engineering

Students’ development of self-directed and lifelong learning capacities is vital for their success in today’s engineering environment. Instructors play a critical role in influencing outcomes related to self-directed learning (SDL) through their design of courses that support students’ transitions from controlled to autonomous learning behaviors. Yet there is a critical lack of research examining how instructor choices promote self-directed (and eventually lifelong) learning development in undergraduate engineering students. In this work in progress, we introduce a project that explores how instructor choices affect a range of student outcomes related to their development as self-directed and lifelong learners. Drawing on existing …

Development Of A Mechanical System For Osteon Isolation, S. Ranglin, D. Das, A. Mingo, O. Ukinamemen, Gaffar Gailani, S. Cowin, L. Cardoso

Publications and Research

Osteons are small semi cylindrical hard tissues that exist in long bones of humans and some animals. Their diameter is in the range of 250 – 300 micrometers approximately. They contain the osteocytes which plays a role in bone mechanotransduction. The boundary that surrounds the osteon from outside is called the cement line. In a summer research project supported by CUNY-LSAMP a group of four students and three professors worked full summer to develop a system that can isolate the osteons thus a mechanical testing could be performed (stress relaxation test) to determine their poroelastic properties. Two sets of osteons …

Sensitivity Analysis And Calibration Of The Alligator Cracking Model In The Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide Using Regional Data, Vivek Jha Oct 2009

Sensitivity Analysis And Calibration Of The Alligator Cracking Model In The Mechanistic-Empirical Pavement Design Guide Using Regional Data, Vivek Jha

Theses and Dissertations

The models used in the mechanistic-empirical pavement design guide (M-EPDG) were calibrated using the data from all across the United States. The alligator cracking model uses traffic, material and structural data along with local and global calibration factors to calculate the number of axles to failure and the damage index. Both of which are further used to calculate the fatigue cracking in the pavement with the help of regression coefficients and calibration constants. However, as these coefficients and constants were developed using the national database, the model might not predict the fatigue behavior of the pavement accurately for a particular …

The Design And Validation Of A Computational Rigid Body Model Of The Elbow., Edward Spratley Oct 2009

The Design And Validation Of A Computational Rigid Body Model Of The Elbow., Edward Spratley

Theses and Dissertations

The use of computational modeling is an effective and inexpensive way to predict the response of complex systems to various perturbations. However, not until the early 1990s had this technology been used to predict the behavior of physiological systems, specifically the human skeletal system. To that end, a computational model of the human elbow joint was developed using computed topography (CT) scans of cadaveric donor tissue, as well as the commercially available software package SolidWorks™. The kinematic function of the joint model was then defined through 3D reconstructions of the osteoarticular surfaces and various soft-tissue constraints. The model was validated …

Nutrient Removal & Greenhouse Gas Abatement With Co2 Supplemented Algal High Rate Ponds, Ian Woertz, Laura Fulton, Tryg Lundquist Oct 2009

Nutrient Removal & Greenhouse Gas Abatement With Co2 Supplemented Algal High Rate Ponds, Ian Woertz, Laura Fulton, Tryg Lundquist

Civil and Environmental Engineering

High rate algae ponds fed clarified domestic wastewater and CO2-rich flue gas are expected to remove nutrients to concentrations similar to those achieved in mechanical treatment technologies, such as activated sludge. However, the energy intensity of wastewater treatment with CO2-supplemented high rate ponds (HRPs) would be less than that of mechanical treatments. In conjunction with anaerobic digestion of algal biomass and co-substrates, the algae-based system would produce a substantial excess of electricity. Greenhouse gas abatement from such CO2-HRP/digestion systems would stem mainly from energy conservation and the offset of fossil fuel electricity with biogas-derived …

The long term objective of this research is to develop a collapsible, percutaneously inserted, axial flow blood pump to improve blood flow in the cavopulmonary circulation. Through this research, the experimental evaluation of five blood pump prototypes and hemolysis testing of one blood pump prototype were performed. All prototypes demonstrated acceptable hydraulic performance. A comparison of the experimental results with numerical predictions demonstrated a 10-20% deviation, an acceptable range per industry standard. Hemolysis testing of a four bladed adult blood pump showed plasma free hemoglobin level of 20.04 mg/dL and maximum NIH (normalized index of hemolysis) level was 0.017 g/100L. …

Simple Agarose-Chitosan Gel Composite System For Enhanced Neuronal Growth In Three Dimensions, Zheng Cao, Ryan J. Gilbert, Wei He Oct 2009

Simple Agarose-Chitosan Gel Composite System For Enhanced Neuronal Growth In Three Dimensions, Zheng Cao, Ryan J. Gilbert, Wei He

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A simplified approach to increase neuronal attachment on an agarose hydrogel was proposed by blending agarose with another biocompatible polysaccharide, chitosan. The stiffness of the agarose gel was maintained despite the inclusion of chitosan, as determined by rheological tests. The structure of the blended hydrogels was characterized using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. An in vitro cell study revealed that the blends promoted neuron adhesion. The concentration of chitosan in the hydrogel had great influence on the morphology of neurons. An optimum range of chitosan concentration in agarose gel, to enhance neural cell attachment and differentiation, was identified based …

Research In Information Technology: Analysis Of Existing Graduate Research, Christopher John Cole Oct 2009

Research In Information Technology: Analysis Of Existing Graduate Research, Christopher John Cole

Theses and Dissertations

Information Technology is an academic discipline that is well recognized by the academic community. There is an increasing number of schools offering degrees in Information Technology and has there is an official curriculum published with the ACM/IEEE computing Curriculum. A concern with Information Technology as an academic discipline is that it does not have a clearly defined set of research issues which are not studied by any other discipline. One way to propose this set of issues is to perform a “bottom-up” analysis and gather research in IT that has already been published. This research can then be analyzed for …

Biogas Production From Algae Biomass Harvested At Wastewater Treatment Ponds, Michael Salerno, Yakup Nurdogan, Tryg J. Lundquist Oct 2009

Biogas Production From Algae Biomass Harvested At Wastewater Treatment Ponds, Michael Salerno, Yakup Nurdogan, Tryg J. Lundquist

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Waste-grown microalgae are a potentially important biomass for biofuel production. However, most of the 7,000 wastewater treatment ponds systems in the US do not use algae harvesting. Those that do, typically return the biomass to the ponds, where it decomposes on the pond floor, releasing methane to the atmosphere and degrading water quality. Instead, the algae biomass could be processed in anaerobic digesters. Algae typically yield less methane than wastewater sludge (~0.3 vs. 0.40 L CH4/g volatile solids introduced). Ammonia toxicity and recalcitrant cell walls are commonly cited causes of the lower yields. Ammonia toxicity might be counteracted by co-digesting …

Determination Of Size Effects During The Phase Transition Of A Nanoscale Au-Si Eutectic, B J. Kim, J Tersoff, C-Y Wen, M C. Reuter, E A. Stach, F M. Ross

Birck and NCN Publications

The phase diagram of a nanoscale system can be substantially different than in the bulk, but quantitative measurements have proven elusive. Here we use in situ microscopy to observe a phase transition in a nanoscale system, together with a simple quantitative model to extract the size effects from these measurements. We expose a Au particle to disilane gas, and observe the transition from a two-phase Au þ AuSi system to single-phase AuSi. Size effects are evident in the nonlinear disappearance of the solid Au. Our analysis shows a substantial shift in the liquidus line, and a discontinuous change in the …
