Face And Lip Tracking In Unconstrained Imagery For Improved Automatic Speech Recognition, Brandon Crow, Jane Zhang Jan 2009

Face And Lip Tracking In Unconstrained Imagery For Improved Automatic Speech Recognition, Brandon Crow, Jane Zhang

Electrical Engineering

When combined with acoustical speech information, visual speech information (lip movement) significantly improves Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) in acoustically noisy environments. Previous research has demonstrated that visual modality is a viable tool for identifying speech. However, the visual information has yet to become utilized in mainstream ASR systems due to the difficulty in accurately tracking lips in real-world conditions. This paper presents our current progress in tracking face and lips in visually challenging environments. Findings suggest the mean shift algorithm performs poorly for small regions, in this case the lips, but it achieves near 80% accuracy for facial tracking.

Analysis Of Flux-Base Fins For Estimation Of Heat Transfer Coefficient, Kevin D. Cole, C. Tarawneh, B. Wilson

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Exact solutions are given for the transient temperature in flux-base fins with the method of Green’s functions (GF) in the form of infinite series for three different tip conditions. The speed of convergence is improved by replacing the steady part by a closed-form steady solution. For the insulated-tip case, a quasi-steady solution is presented. Numerical values are presented and the conditions under which the quasi-steady solution is accurate are determined. An experimental example is given for estimation of the heat transfer coefficient (HTC) on a non-rotating roller bearing, in which the outer bearing race is treated as a transient fin.

Rapid-Response Urban Cfd Simulations Using A Gpu Computing Paradigm On Desktop Supercomputers, Inanc Senocak, Julien C. Thibault, Matthew Caylor

Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the event of chemical or biological (CB) agent attacks or accidents, first-responders need hazard prediction data to launch effective emergency response action. Accurate and timely knowledge of the wind fields in urban areas is critically important to identify and project the extent of CB agent dispersion to determine the hazard-zone. In their 2008 report (GAO-08-180), U.S. Government Accountability Office has reported that first responders are limited in their ability to detect and model hazardous releases in urban environments. The current set of modeling tools for contaminant dispersion in urban environments rely on empirical assumptions with diagnostic equations (Wang et …

Understanding Rubber Friction In The Presence Of Water Using Sum-Frequency Generation Spectroscopy, Kumar Nanjundiah, Ping Yuan Hsu, Ali Dhinojwala Jan 2009

Understanding Rubber Friction In The Presence Of Water Using Sum-Frequency Generation Spectroscopy, Kumar Nanjundiah, Ping Yuan Hsu, Ali Dhinojwala

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

Infrared-visible sum-frequency-generation spectroscopy (SFG) was used to study the molecular structure of water between a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) and a sapphire substrate. The observation of SFG peaks associated with the dangling surface hydroxyl groups (3690 cm(-1)) and water bands (3000-3400 cm(-1)) indicates that the contact spot between the PDMS lens and the sapphire substrate is heterogeneous. Within the contact spot there are regions where the methyl groups of the PDMS chains are in direct contact with the surface hydroxyl groups on the sapphire substrate. In the other regions, a thin water layer is trapped between the two surfaces with spectral features …

The Developmental Effect Of Human Embryoid Bodies (Heb) Under Dynamic Culturing Conditions Using A Perfusion Based Slow Turning Lateral Vessel (Stlv) Bioreactor, Claiborne Collier Jan 2009

The Developmental Effect Of Human Embryoid Bodies (Heb) Under Dynamic Culturing Conditions Using A Perfusion Based Slow Turning Lateral Vessel (Stlv) Bioreactor, Claiborne Collier

Theses and Dissertations

Human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) can provide a unique approach for novel tissue engineering applications. Previous groups have shown that hESCs can differentiate into specialized cell types through the generation of human embryoid bodies (hEBs). These multi-cellular constructs are then subjected to suspension culture for several weeks. Traditional hESC differentiation techniques have yielded non-homogeneous EBs derived in standard static cultures providing an inefficient platform for cellular viability and embryonic modeling. Here, our study aimed at systematically comparing the formation, growth, and differentiation capabilities of hESC-derived hEBs in dynamic and static suspension cultures. We used a continuous flow perfusion slow turning …

Relationship Of Two-Fluid Model Parameters With Safety On Arterials, Vinayak V. Dixit, Anurag Pande, Mohamed A. Abdel-Aty, Essam Radwan, Abhishek Das

Civil and Environmental Engineering

The two-fluid model for vehicular traffic flow explains the traffic on arterials as a mix of stopped and running vehicles. It describes the relationship between the vehicles’ running speed and the fraction of running vehicles. Two parameters of the model essentially represent ‘free flow’ travel time and level of interaction among vehicles, respectively, and may be used to evaluate urban roadway networks and urban corridors with partially limited access. These parameters are supposed to be related not only with the characteristics of the roadway but also with behavioral aspects of driver population, e.g., aggressiveness. In this study two-fluid models were …

Tilted Parallel Dielectric Slab As A Multilevel Attenuator For Incident P- Or S-Polarized Light, R. M.A. Azzam Jan 2009

Tilted Parallel Dielectric Slab As A Multilevel Attenuator For Incident P- Or S-Polarized Light, R. M.A. Azzam

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Under the condition of first-order blooming, a parallel dielectric slab, which is inserted in the path of an obliquely incident p- or s-polarized light beam, introduces multiple discrete attenuation levels given by 1/3, 4/27, 4/243,...... in reflection and 4/9, 4/81, 4/729,...... in transmission. These attenuation levels are independent of the slab refractive index, incident p or s linear polarization, or the presence of identical transparent surface coatings at the front and back sides of the slab. Therefore, the tilted slab provides multidecade reflectance and attenuation reference values that can be used in calibrating spectrophotometers and filters, and also …

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The Effect of Gas Sparger Design on the Gas Holdup Radial Profile in a Bubble Column (With a Diameter of 0.162 M) Has Been Studied using Γ-Ray Computed Tomography (CT). Six Different Configurations of Gas Spargers Were Examined, using an Air-Water System for Selected Superficial Gas Velocities from 2 Cm/s to 30 Cm/s, Covering the Homogeneous and Heterogeneous (Churn-Turbulent) Flow Regimes. Two Operating Pressures Were Used: 1 and 4 Atm. Differences Were Found between the Gas Holdup Distributions Produced by Different Spargers at Dimensionless Radii of R/R < 0.8 in the Central Region of the Column. the Cross and Single Nozzle Spargers Produced Closely Similar Gas Holdup Distributions, While the Perforated Plate Sparger Produced a Higher Gas Holdup When Compared to Other Spargers with the Same Percentage Open Area (POA). at 4 Atm, the Sparger Design Did Not Have a Significant Effect on the Gas Holdup Profiles, Compared to Atmospheric Pressure, Except for the Case of the Single-Hole Sparger, Which Was Found to Yield a Higher Gas Holdup. © 2009 American Chemical Society.

Senior Design At Cal Poly: A Recipe For Success, Robert A. Mcdonald, Jordi Puig-Suari, Dave Esposto, Bruce Wright

Aerospace Engineering

The Aerospace Engineering Department at Cal Poly has, over the years, evolved a unique recipe for Senior Design. This recipe has been applied to the capstone Aircraft and Spacecraft design courses and will soon be extended to an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle design course. This recipe consists primarily of a year long design sequence with a great deal of participation from the region's aerospace industry. The Cal Poly recipe has proven to be both flexible and effective. The authors believe it could be adapted and applied in a similar manner at other institutions with a similar degree of success.

Underpowered Aircraft - Performance And Operational Possibilities, Andrew S. Ezzard, Michael R. Vallone, Robert A. Mcdonald Jan 2009

Underpowered Aircraft - Performance And Operational Possibilities, Andrew S. Ezzard, Michael R. Vallone, Robert A. Mcdonald

Aerospace Engineering

A unique configuration, known as an Underpowered Aircraft, allows for the modification of gliding flight vehicles for increased range and lower cost when compared with fully powered flight vehicles. Intentionally under-sizing the powerplant for a flight vehicle allows the designer to choose a powerplant that will not only perform the mission requirements, but will also provide the customer with the most cost effective solution, as some missions may not require fully powered flight. Specifically, the underpowered aircraft concept studied in this paper is a gliding flight aircraft that does not have enough power for climbing or level flight, but does …

This tool allows users to easily create, modify, and assess the quality of metamodels.

Lower-Order Aerodynamic Loads Modeling Of A Maneuvering Generic Fighter Using Ddes Simulations, Tiger L. Jeans, David R. Mcdaniel, Russell M. Cummings, Keith Bergeron Jan 2009

Lower-Order Aerodynamic Loads Modeling Of A Maneuvering Generic Fighter Using Ddes Simulations, Tiger L. Jeans, David R. Mcdaniel, Russell M. Cummings, Keith Bergeron

Aerospace Engineering

Unforeseen nonlinear aerodynamic behavior and/or fluid-structure interactions have affected the development of nearly every major fighter program since 1960. The development cost of each of these aircraft could have been drastically reduced if these aerodynamic issues had been identified earlier in the design process. Therefore, a high-fidelity computational tool capable of reliably predicting or identifying configurations susceptible to handling quality instabilities prior to flight test would be of great interest to the stability and control community. The United States Air Force Academy Modeling and Simulation Research Center and the United States Air Force Seek Eagle Office have initiated a joint …
