The quantification of abundance, size, and distribution of fish is critical to properly manage and protect marine ecosystems and regulate marine fisheries. Currently, fish surveys are conducted using fish tagging, scientific diving, and/or capture and release methods (i.e., net trawls), methods that are both costly and time consuming. Therefore, providing an automated way to conduct fish surveys could provide a real benefit to marine managers. In order to provide automated fish counts and classification we propose an automated fish species classification system using computer vision. This computer vision system can count and classify fish found in underwater video images using …

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering
Climate change is predicted to be one of the greatest drivers of ecological change in the coming century. Increases in temperature over the last century have clearly been linked to shifts in species distributions. Given the magnitude of projected future climatic changes, we can expect even larger range shifts in the coming century. These changes will, in turn, alter ecological communities and the functioning of ecosystems. Despite the seriousness of predicted climate change, the uncertainty in climate-change projections makes it difficult for conservation managers and planners to proactively respond to climate stresses. To address one aspect of this uncertainty, we …

The beginnings of the Royal Ontario Museum can be traced back to the excavations and collections of Charles Trick Currelly, a staff member of the Egyptian Exploration Fund in the early 1900s. Currelly excavated with Sir Flinders Petrie at Abydos and with Edouard Naville at Deir el Bahari. With the assistance of Robert Mond and others, Currelly amassed a rich and diverse collection that became the basis for the ROM, which opened its doors in 1914. Part of that collection included several Egyptian mummies (Currelly 1971) .
The Egyptologicalholdings at the ROM include eight mummies: one dating to the Predynastic …

Integrated Reservoir Management System For Adaptation To Climate Change Impacts In The Upper Thames River Basin, Hyung-Il Eum, Vasan Arunachalam, Slobodan P. Simonovic
Water Resources Research Report
Climate change is one of the more pressing issues that attract the attention of scientists and policy makers. Many scientists are developing necessary methodologies to better understand the impacts of climate change, and support the development of appropriate adaptation measures. Literature on the application of adaptation measures to changing climatic conditions is very limited and the need for more work is evident on the development of adaptation strategies for mitigating negative impacts of climate change in water resources management practice.
This study presents an integrated reservoir management system for the Upper Thames River basin that includes: (1) a Weather Generator …

Energy Sector For The Integrated System Dynamics Model For Analyzing Behaviour Of The Social-Economic-Climatic Model, Evan G. R. Davies, Slobodan P. Simonovic
Water Resources Research Report
The system dynamics-based energy sector described here adds a representation of energy supply and demand dynamics, and their associated carbon emissions, to a larger society-biosphere-climate model previously described in Davies and Simonovic (2008). The inclusion of an energy sector expands the earlier model considerably, and provides new avenues for its application to policy development.
Five interconnected components constitute the full energy sector: demand, resources, economics, production, and emissions. The energy demand component calculates changes over time in heatenergy and electric-energy demand as a result of economic activity, price-induced efficiency measures, and technological change. Energy resources models changes in the amounts …

Updated Rainfall Intensity Duration Frequency Curves For The City Of London Under The Changing Climate, Slobodan P. Simonovic, Angela Peck
Water Resources Research Report
The main focus of this study is the update of rainfall IDF curves for the City of London under the conditions of changed climate. Predicted future climate change impacts for Southwestern Ontario include higher temperatures and increases in precipitation, leading to an intensification of the hydrologic cycle. One of the expected consequences of change is an increase in the magnitude and frequency of extreme events (e.g. high intensity rainfall, flash flooding, severe droughts, etc.). Changes in extreme events are of particular importance for the design, operation and maintenance of municipal water management infrastructure. Management of municipal water infrastructure (sewers, storm …
Propitious Checkpoint Intervals To Improve System Performance, Sarala Arunagiri, John T. Daly, Patricia J. Teller
Propitious Checkpoint Intervals To Improve System Performance, Sarala Arunagiri, John T. Daly, Patricia J. Teller
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
The large scale of current and next-generation massively parallel processing (MPP) systems presents significant challenges related to fault tolerance. For applications that perform periodic checkpointing, the choice of the checkpoint interval, the period between checkpoints, can have a significant impact on the execution time of the application and the number of checkpoint I/O operations performed by the application. These two metrics determine the frequency of checkpoint I/O operations performed by the application, and thereby, the contribution of the checkpoint operations to the I/O bandwidth demand made by the application. In a computing environment where there are concurrent applications competing for …

Experiments In Teaching An Engaging And Demystifying Introduction To Algorithms: Installment 1: Huffman Codes, Alan Siegel, Eric Freudenthal
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
As is well known -- the Huffman algorithm is a remarkably simple, and is a wonderfully illustrative example of the greedy method in algorithm design. However, the Huffman problem, which is to design an optimal binary character code (or an optimal binary tree with weighted leaves) is intrinsically technical, and its specification is ill-suited for students with modest mathematical sophistication.
This difficulty is circumvented by introducing an alternative 'precursor' problem that is easy to understand, and where this understanding can lead to student-devised solutions: how to merge k sorted lists of varying length together as efficiently as possible. Once students …
Fast Convolution And Fast Fourier Transform Under Interval Uncertainty, Guoqing Liu, Vladik Kreinovich
Fast Convolution And Fast Fourier Transform Under Interval Uncertainty, Guoqing Liu, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
Convolution y(t), defined as an integral of a(t-s)*x(s) ds, is one of the main techniques in digital signal processing. A straightforward computation of the convolution y(t) requires O(n^2) steps, where n is the number of observations x(t0),...,x(t(n-1)). It is well known that by using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) algorithm, we can compute convolution much faster, with computation time O(n*log(n)).
In practice, we only know the signal x(t) and the function a(t) with uncertainty; sometimes, we know them with interval uncertainty, i.e., we know intervals [x-(t),x+(t)] and [a-(t),a+(t)] that contain the actual (unknown) functions x(t) and a(t). In such situations, …
A Model For Predicting The Multiscale Crack Growth Due To An Impact In Heterogeneous Viscoelastic Solids, Flavio V. Souza, David H. Allen
A Model For Predicting The Multiscale Crack Growth Due To An Impact In Heterogeneous Viscoelastic Solids, Flavio V. Souza, David H. Allen
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications
A two-scale model for predicting the multiple crack growth in viscoelastic solids due to an impact is presented. The cracks are considered only at the local scale through the use of a micromechanical viscoelastic cohesive zone model. The multiscale model has been implemented in a finite-element code. In order to minimize the computation time, the local finite-element meshes are solved in parallel by multiple processors. An example problem is given in order to demonstrate the capabilities of the model.

System of systems (SoS) architecting techniques rely on traditional, static tools that were designed for classical stove-piped systems. There is a need for tools that can capture the complex adaptive nature of such SoS. An architecture search methodology using genetic algorithms and a fuzzy assessor was applied to the conceptual architecture design of a generic smart grid and a set of architectures with high fitness was obtained. This set of architectures is intended to serve as a starting point for a systems architect to ultimately be able to converge on the best system design. The SoS architecting process has largely …

Implications Of Philosophy For Engineering And Engineering Technology Bachelors Programs, Michael Dyrenfurth, Mike Murphy, William Grimson
Conference papers
This paper raises the question: What is philosophy and then, after describing its branches and school, it extends the definitions to implications for the practice of engineering and engineering technology education. It folds the definitions against the work of engineering faculty. The latter was described as including curriculum development, teaching, mentoring/advising, research/scholarship, and engagement. Sample codes of ethics are shared for engineering technology students and professionals.

Epitaxial carbon was grown by heating (000 (1) over bar) silicon carbide (SiC) to high temperatures (1450-1600 degrees C) in vacuum. A continuous graphene surface layer was formed at temperatures above 1475 degrees C. X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) were extensively used to characterize the quality of the few-layer graphene (FLG) surface. The XPS studies were useful in confirming the graphitic composition and measuring the thickness of the FLG samples. STM studies revealed a wide variety of nanometer-scale features that include sharp carbon-rich ridges, moire superlattices, one-dimensional line defects, and grain boundaries. By imaging these features …

Toward Surround Gates On Vertical Single-Walled Carbon Nanotube Devices, Aaron D. Franklin, Robert A. Sayer, Timothy D. Sands, Timothy S. Fisher, David B. Janes
PRISM: NNSA Center for Prediction of Reliability, Integrity and Survivability of Microsystems
The one-dimensional, cylindrical nature of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) suggests that the ideal gating geometry for nanotube field-effect transistors (FETs) is a surround gate (SG). Using vertical SWCNTs templated in porous anodic alumina, SGs are formed using top-down processes for the dielectric/metal depositions and definition of the channel length. Surround gates allow aggressive scaling of the channel to 25% of the length attainable with a bottom-gate geometry without incurring short-channel effects. The process demonstrated here for forming SGs on vertical SWCNTs is amenable for large-scale fabrication of multinanotube FETs.

Theoretical Basis Of Parametric-Resonance-Based Atomic Force Microscopy, G Prakash, S Hu, Arvind Raman, R. Reifenberger
Birck and NCN Publications
Parametric resonance underpins the physics of swings, resonant surface waves, and particle traps. There is increasing interest in its potential applications in atomic force microscopy (AFM). In this paper, the dynamics of parametrically resonant microcantilevers for high sensitivity imaging and force spectroscopy applications is investigated theoretically. Detailed numerical parametric-resonance simulations are performed to understand how the microcantilever amplitude varies with tip-sample separation, the tip-sample interaction, and the scanning dynamics of a microcantilever probe. We find three key advantages of a parametrically resonant microcantilever for AFM applications: (a) the reduction in ringing effects near feature edges that occur for high-Q microcantilevers; …

Biologically catalyzed reactions often produce enantiomers of the product; however, only one configuration is desired. Reaction conditions are known to affect enantiomer ratios and reaction kinetics, but little is known regarding the effect of processing conditions on whole-cell biocatalysis. Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells were grown in batch on glucose at pH = 4, 5, and 7, and then immobilized on Celite beads or in calcium alginate beads and used as the biocatalyst for the conversion of acetophenone in hexane to (S)-1-phenylethanol at water activities of 0.37, 0.61, and 0.80. S. cerevisiae was used as a model microorganism for the whole-cell catalyzed …

Combining variants of the Kalman filter and moving horizon estimation (MHE) with nonlinear MPC has been studied before. The MHE is appealing due to its ability to impose constraints and demonstrated superiority over extended Kalman filter. However, nonlinear MPC based on MHE requires solutions to two back to back nonlinear programs. In this paper we propose to use the cell filter (CF) to provide state feedback to the MPC regulator. The cell filter is a piecewise constant approximation of the conditional probability density of the states, whose temporal evolution is modeled by an aggregate Markov chain. Since the CF …

Investigation of the electrical properties of phosphate glasses where transition metal oxide such as iron oxide is the network former and network modifier is presented. Phosphate glasses containing iron are electronically conducting glasses where the polaronic conduction is due to the electron hopping from low to high iron valence state. The identification of structural defects caused by ion/polaron migration, the analysis of dipolar states and electrical conductivity in iron phosphate glasses containing various alkali and mixed alkali ions was performed on the basis of the impedance spectroscopy (IS). The changes in electrical conductivity from as-quenched phosphate glass to fully crystallized …

The compound Ho2Mn3Si5 exhibits multiple magnetic transitions: (i) an ordering at ~78 K, (ii) a second magnetic transition at ~16 K, and (iii) an anomaly at ~4 K. Its paramagnetic Curie temperature is found to be small but positive. Assuming a free ion effective paramagnetic moment of 10.6µB for Ho3+ ion, the effective paramagnetic moment per Mn in this compound is calculated to be 1.73µB, which indicates the itinerant nature of Mn d electrons. The various transitions in magnetization data are perhaps due to the ordering of rare earth and Mn moments. The magnetization at 2 K in applied fields …

Special consideration was given to determine the resistance of a bonded assembly of two adherents having at least one adherent flexible to quantify the bond between tape and a surgical metal substrate bonded by a luting GPC. The delaminated tape surface was examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with an accelerating voltage of 20 K V to determine whether failure of the bond was adhesive of cohesive in …
The Evaluation Of Rekeying Protocols Within The Hubenko Architecture As Applied To Wireless Sensor Networks, Cory J. Antosh
The Evaluation Of Rekeying Protocols Within The Hubenko Architecture As Applied To Wireless Sensor Networks, Cory J. Antosh
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the impact of using three different rekeying protocols–pair-wise, hierarchical, and Secure Lock within a wireless sensor network (WSN) under the Hubenko architecture. Using a Matlab computer simulation, the impact of the three rekeying protocols on the number of bits transmitted across the network and the amount of battery power consumed in WSN nodes during rekey operations is investigated. Baseline pair-wise rekeying performance can be improved by using either Secure Lock or hierarchical rekeying. The best choice depends on the size of the WSN and the size of the key used. Hierarchical rekeying is the best choice for …

Theory And Computation Of Photopolymerization-Induced Phase Transition And Morphology Development In Blends Of Crystalline Polymer And Photoreactive Monomer, Pankaj Rathi, Thein Kyu
College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering
A hypothetical phase diagram of a crystalline polymer/photoreactive monomer mixture has been calculated on the basis of phase field (PF) free energy of crystal solidification in conjunction with Flory-Huggins (FH) free energy of liquid-liquid demixing to guide the morphology development during photopolymerization of poly(ethylene oxide)/triacrylate blend. The self-consistent solution of the combined PF-FH theory exhibits a crystalline-amorphous phase diagram showing the coexistence of solid+liquid gap bound by the liquidus and solidus lines, followed by an upper critical solution temperature at a lower temperature. When photopolymerization was triggered in the isotropic region, i.e., slightly above the crystal melting transition temperatures, the …

Muscle mechanical work is an important biomechanical quantity in human movement analyses and has been estimated using different quantities including external, internal and joint work. The goal of this study was to investigate the relationships between these traditionally used estimates of mechanical work in human walking and to assess whether they can be used as accurate estimates of musculotendon and/or muscle fiber work. A muscle-actuated forward dynamics walking simulation was generated to quantify each of the mechanical work measures. Total joint work (i.e. the time integral of absolute joint power over a full gait cycle) was found to underestimate total …
