Improved Predictive Power Control Of Cdma System In Rayleigh Fading Channel, Adit Kurniawan, Iskandar Iskandar, Sayid Machdar Apr 2009

Improved Predictive Power Control Of Cdma System In Rayleigh Fading Channel, Adit Kurniawan, Iskandar Iskandar, Sayid Machdar

Makara Journal of Technology

In this paper an improved prediction-based power control is proposed for code division multiple access (CDMA) systems in Rayleigh fading channel environments. One of the most serious problems which degrades the performance of power control algorithm is the effect of feedback delay. To overcome the effect of feedback delay, power control needs to employ prediction algorithm which utilises the correlation property of the past channel samples measurements to predict the future sample values. In CDMA power control, however, the correlation property of channel measurements is destroyed because the transmit power is continuously updated for each power control interval. The prediction …

Bottom-Up Ontology Creation With A Direct Instance Input Interface, Charles C.H. Wei Apr 2009

Bottom-Up Ontology Creation With A Direct Instance Input Interface, Charles C.H. Wei

Master's Theses

In general an ontology is created by following a top-down, or so called genus-species approach, where the species are differentiated from the genus and from each other by means of differentiae [8]. The superconcept is the genus, every subconcept is a species, and the differentiae correspond to roles. To complete it a user organizes data into a proper structure, accompanied with the instances in that domain in order to complete the construction of an ontology. It is a concept learning procedure in a school, for example. Students first learn the general knowledge and apply it to their exercise and homework …

Exploiting Matrix Symmetry To Improve Fpgaaccelerated Conjugate Gradient, Jason D. Bakos, Krishna K. Nagar Apr 2009

Exploiting Matrix Symmetry To Improve Fpgaaccelerated Conjugate Gradient, Jason D. Bakos, Krishna K. Nagar

Faculty Publications

In this paper we describe a new approach for accelerating the Conjugate Gradient (CG) method using an FPGA co-processor. As in previous approaches, our co-processor performs a double-precision sparse matrix-vector multiplication. However, our implementation doubles the amount of computation per unit of input data by exploiting the symmetry of the input matrix and computing the upper and lower triangle of the input matrix in parallel. Using a Virtex-2 Pro 100 FPGA, we have achieved an observed computational throughput of 1155 MFLOPS.

On The Performance Of Svd-Dwt Based Digital Video Watermarking Technique With Semi-Blind Detector, Tarzan Basaruddin, Della Maulidiya Apr 2009

On The Performance Of Svd-Dwt Based Digital Video Watermarking Technique With Semi-Blind Detector, Tarzan Basaruddin, Della Maulidiya

Makara Journal of Technology

On the Performance of SVD-DWT Based Digital Video Watermarking Technique with Semi-Blind Detector. This paper presents a watermarking technique for digital video. The proposed scheme is developed based on the work of Ganic and Chan which took the virtue of SVD and DWT. While the previous works of Chan has the blind detector property, our attempt is to develop a scheme with semi-blind detector, by using the merit of the DWT-SDV technique proposed by Ganic which was originally applied to still image. Overall, our experimental results show that our proposed scheme has a very good imperceptibility and is reasonably robust …

Lipid Production From Microalgae As A Promising Candidate For Biodiesel Production, Arief Widjaja Apr 2009

Lipid Production From Microalgae As A Promising Candidate For Biodiesel Production, Arief Widjaja

Makara Journal of Technology

Recently, several strains of microalgae have been studied as they contain high lipid content capable to be converted to biodiesel. Fresh water microalgae Chlorella vulgaris studied in this research was one of the proof as it contained high triacyl glyceride which made it a potential candidate for biodiesel production. Factors responsible for good growing of microalgae such as CO2 and nitrogen concentration were investigated. It was found that total lipid content was increased after exposing to media with not enough nitrogen concentration. However, under this nitrogen depletion media, the growth rate was very slow leading to lower lipid productivity. The …

Economic Development Performance Measures And Rural Economic Development In Indiana, Jennifer L. Sharkey, Jon D. Fricker Apr 2009

Economic Development Performance Measures And Rural Economic Development In Indiana, Jennifer L. Sharkey, Jon D. Fricker

JTRP Technical Reports

An important consideration when identifying and implementing transportation investments is the prospect of economic development. Government agencies are faced with the challenging task of efficiently allocating scarce resources in order to satisfy the physical needs of the state and its communities. The Indiana Department of Transportation has the difficult task of prioritizing projects involving urban and rural transportation investments while attempting to satisfy both local and state needs. Typically, urban settings provide the greatest opportunity for economic development, due to population density, public infrastructure, and ready markets. Consequently, rural areas may get left behind, becoming more isolated and unattractive from …

Auditory Coding Based Speech Enhancement, Yao Ren, Michael T. Johnson Apr 2009

Auditory Coding Based Speech Enhancement, Yao Ren, Michael T. Johnson

Dr. Dolittle Project: A Framework for Classification and Understanding of Animal Vocalizations

This paper demonstrates a speech enhancement system based on an efficient auditory coding approach, coding of time-relative structure using spikes. The spike coding method can more compactly represent the non-stationary characteristics of speech signals than the Fourier transform or wavelet transform. Enhancement is accomplished through the use of MMSE thresholding on the spike code. Experimental results show that compared with the spectral domain logSTSA filter, both the subjective spectrogram evaluation and objective SSNR improvement for the proposed approach is better in suppressing noise in high noise situations, with fewer musical artifacts.P

Optimal Distributed Microphone Phase Estimation, Marek B. Trawicki, Michael T. Johnson Apr 2009

Optimal Distributed Microphone Phase Estimation, Marek B. Trawicki, Michael T. Johnson

Dr. Dolittle Project: A Framework for Classification and Understanding of Animal Vocalizations

This paper presents a minimum mean-square error spectral phase estimator for speech enhancement in the distributed multiple microphone scenario. The estimator uses Gaussian models for both the speech and noise priors under the assumption of a diffuse incoherent noise field representing ambient noise in a widely dispersed microphone configuration. Experiments demonstrate significant benefits of using the optimal multichannel phase estimator as compared to the noisy phase of a reference channel.

Mitigating The Expansive Behavior Of Chemically Treated Soils, Sochan Jung, Maria Caterina Santagata Apr 2009

Mitigating The Expansive Behavior Of Chemically Treated Soils, Sochan Jung, Maria Caterina Santagata

JTRP Technical Reports

Sulfate-induced heave, resulting from the chemical treatment of sulfate rich soils, has been known to cause significant damage to pavements and other structures particularly in the south-western United States. This research addressed the problem of sulfate-induced heave in coal mine spoils, formed as a result of shallow strip coal mining, after treatment with calcium-based stabilizers. These spoils occur in areas of Indiana in which substantial infrastructure development is taking place and will continue to occur in the next 10-15 years. Samples of coal mine spoils were obtained from different sites in Indiana. While the majority of the samples exhibited sulfate …

Real-Time Implementation Of An Intelligent Algorithm For Electric Ship Power System Reconfiguration, Pinaki Mitra, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy Apr 2009

Real-Time Implementation Of An Intelligent Algorithm For Electric Ship Power System Reconfiguration, Pinaki Mitra, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The naval electric ship is often subject to severe damages under battle conditions. The damages or faults might even affect the generators and as a result, critical loads might suffer from power deficiency which may lead to an eventual collapse of rest of the system. In order to serve the critical loads and maintain a proper power balance without excessive generation, the ship power system requires a fast reconfiguration of the remaining system under fault conditions. A fast intelligent algorithm using the Small Population based Particle Swarm Optimization (SPPSO) for dynamic reconfiguration of the available generators and loads when a …

A Bipolar Clamp Mechanism For Activation Of Jak-Family Protein Tyrosine Kinases, Dipak Barua, James R. Faeder, Jason M. Haugh Apr 2009

A Bipolar Clamp Mechanism For Activation Of Jak-Family Protein Tyrosine Kinases, Dipak Barua, James R. Faeder, Jason M. Haugh

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Most cell surface receptors for growth factors and cytokines dimerize in order to mediate signal transduction. For many such receptors, the Janus kinase (Jak) family of non-receptor protein tyrosine kinases are recruited in pairs and juxtaposed by dimerized receptor complexes in order to activate one another by trans-phosphorylation. An alternative mechanism for Jak trans-phosphorylation has been proposed in which the phosphorylated kinase interacts with the Src homology 2 (SH2) domain of SH2-B, a unique adaptor protein with the capacity to homo-dimerize. Building on a rule-based kinetic modeling approach that considers the concerted nature and combinatorial complexity of modular protein domain …

A System Design Approach For Unattended Solar Energy Harvesting Supply, Jonathan W. Kimball, Brian T. Kuhn, Robert S. Balog Apr 2009

A System Design Approach For Unattended Solar Energy Harvesting Supply, Jonathan W. Kimball, Brian T. Kuhn, Robert S. Balog

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Remote devices, such as sensors and communications devices, require continuously available power. In many applications, conventional approaches are too expensive, too large, or unreliable. For short-term needs, primary batteries may be used. However, they do not scale up well for long-term installations. Instead, energy harvesting methods must be used. Here, a system design approach is introduced that results in a highly reliable, highly available energy harvesting device for remote applications. First, a simulation method that uses climate data and target availability produces Pareto curves for energy storage and generation. This step determines the energy storage requirement in watt-hours and the …

How To Keep Your Head Above Water While Detecting Errors, Saurabh Bagchi, Ignacio Laguna, Fahad Arshad, David M. Grothe Apr 2009

How To Keep Your Head Above Water While Detecting Errors, Saurabh Bagchi, Ignacio Laguna, Fahad Arshad, David M. Grothe

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Abstract. Today’s distributed systems need runtime error detection to catch errors arising from software bugs, hardware errors, or unexpected operating conditions. A prominent class of error detection techniques operates in a stateful manner, i.e., it keeps track of the state of the application being monitored and then matches state-based rules. Large-scale distributed applications generate a high volume of messages that can overwhelm the capacity of a stateful detection system. An existing approach to handle this is to randomly sample the messages and process the subset. However, this approach, leads to non-determinism with respect to the detection system’s view of what …
