Performance-Based Testing Methodology For Concrete Durability, Niall Holmes, P. A.Muhammed Basheer, Sreejith Nanukuttan, Lulu Basheer Jun 2009

Performance-Based Testing Methodology For Concrete Durability, Niall Holmes, P. A.Muhammed Basheer, Sreejith Nanukuttan, Lulu Basheer

Reports

This report presents an overview of performance based testing methodology for concrete durability and work currently underway jointly at Queens University Belfast and Heriot Watt University, Edinburgh, to undertake this research under a EPSRC funded project (EP/G02152X/1).

EN206-1 superseded BS 5328 on 1st December 2003 and allows designers and producers to use a wide range of cements and aggregate types for a variety of exposure conditions. In this new standard, the durability of concrete is specified in terms of the constituent materials of concrete, properties of fresh and hardened concrete, limitations for concrete composition, specification of concrete, delivery of …

Automated All-Quadrilateral Mesh Adaptation Through Refinement And Coarsening, Bret D. Anderson Jun 2009

Automated All-Quadrilateral Mesh Adaptation Through Refinement And Coarsening, Bret D. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a new approach to conformal all-quadrilateral mesh adaptation. In finite element modeling applications, it is often desirable to modify the node density of the mesh; increasing the density in some parts of the mesh to provide more accurate results, while decreasing the density in other parts to reduce computation time. The desired node density is typically determined by a sizing function based on either the geometry of the model or the results of a finite element solution. Although there are numerous mesh adaptation methods currently in use, including initial adaptive mesh generation, node redistribution, and adaptive mesh …

Rfid Tag Readability Issues With Palletized Loads Of Consumer Goods, Jay Singh, Eric Olsen, Keith Vorst, K. Tripp

Industrial Technology and Packaging

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is an automatic identification technology, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags. This technology is being used in enterprise supply chain management-related applications to improve the efficiency of inventory tracking and management. However, this technology has not been able to realize its promised potential because of several factors, such as lack of congruous worldwide standards, privacy issues and less than perfect read rates in supply chain applications. This research aimed to evaluate the readability issues commonly faced by tagged cases of palletized consumer products. The variables studied in this research were …

Metamaterial Devices For The Terahertz Band, Gabriel Paul Kniffin Jun 2009

Metamaterial Devices For The Terahertz Band, Gabriel Paul Kniffin

Center for Electron Microscopy and Nanofabrication Publications and Presentations

Terahertz (THz) and metamaterials are both hot topics in electromagnetics research. The THz band (0.1-10 THz) lies in the ‘gap’ between microwave and far infrared regions. Research is currently underway to characterize how these waves interact with matter, with potential applications including security screening, medical imaging, and non-destructive evaluation. Metamaterials are artificial materials containing sub-wavelength structures whose material properties, μ and ǫ can be ‘tuned’ to desired specifications, including simultaneously negative values, resulting in exotic properties such as a negative refractive index. Current metamaterials research includes the design of devices that operate at THz frequencies, filling a niche left wide …

Performance Monitoring Of Cover-Zone Concrete, Niall Holmes, John Mccarter, Malcolm Chrisp, Gerry Starrs, Sreejith Nanukuttan, Lulu Basheer, Niall Holmes, Muhammed Basheer Jun 2009

Performance Monitoring Of Cover-Zone Concrete, Niall Holmes, John Mccarter, Malcolm Chrisp, Gerry Starrs, Sreejith Nanukuttan, Lulu Basheer, Niall Holmes, Muhammed Basheer

Conference papers

The concrete cover-zone is a major factor governing the degradation of concrete structures as it provides the only barrier to aggressive agents which initiate corrosion of the reinforcement. Knowledge of the protective qualities of cover-zone concrete is critical in attempting to make predictions as to the in-service performance of the structure with regard to likely deterioration rates for a particular exposure condition and compliance with specified design life. To this end, a multi-electrode array was used to study the surface 50mm of concrete specimens thereby allowing a detailed picture of the response of the covercrete to the changing environment. In …

Growth, Characterization And Applications Of Multifunctional Ferroelectric Thin Films, Bo Xiao Jun 2009

Growth, Characterization And Applications Of Multifunctional Ferroelectric Thin Films, Bo Xiao

Theses and Dissertations

Ferroelectric materials have been extensively studied theoretically and experimentally for many decades. Their ferroelectric, piezoelectric, pyroelectric, dielectric and electro-optical properties offer great promise in various applications such as non-volatile random access memory devices, non linear optics, motion and thermal sensors, and tunable microwave devices. Advanced applications for high dielectric constant insulators and nonvolatile memories in semiconductor industry have led to a meteoric rise of interest in the ferroelectrics recently. As most studied and technically important ferroelectric materials, lead zirconate titanate (PZT) and barium strontium titanate (BST) are widely investigated to understand their properties for potential device applications. Using radio frequency …

System Identification Of An On Orbit Spacecraft's Antenna Dynamics, Christopher M. Sylvester Jun 2009

System Identification Of An On Orbit Spacecraft's Antenna Dynamics, Christopher M. Sylvester

Theses and Dissertations

As a result of previous efforts [Pachter, Barba, 2007] a tight control loop was designed to meet performance specifications while minimizing the feedback control system’s gains of a spacecraft mounted flexible antenna. Emphasis is now shifted to on orbit system identification of the antenna dynamics in order to increase nominal plant knowledge, estimate plant uncertainty bounds, as well as determine the disturbance band. Non-parametric system identification is undertaken. Knowledge of the plant dynamics along with the corresponding uncertainty bounds will provide for the design of a control system which meets the specifications (tracking and disturbance rejection) while at the same …
