Physical Properties Of Polyolefin/Bamboo Charcoal Composites, S Kittinaovarat, W Suthamnoi Jul 2009

Physical Properties Of Polyolefin/Bamboo Charcoal Composites, S Kittinaovarat, W Suthamnoi

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

The physical properties of two kinds of polyolefin / bamboo charcoal composites, based upon polypropylene (PP) and low density polyethylene (LDPE), were studied for varying levels of charcoal inclusion between 0 and 20 phr. A Brabender mixer and two-roll mill were used for the mixing process of both polyolefin and bamboo charcoal composites, followed by compression moulding of the homogeneous mixtures to form the composite materials. The tensile strength and Young's modulus were both found to increase, whilst the elongation at break decreased, in a dose-dependent manner with increasing bamboo charcoal content in the composite materials. The tensile strength of …

Cassava starch was plasticized with sorbitol and formamide on a two-roll mill to obtain thermoplastic starch (TPS). The TPS/modified-MMT nanocomposites were prepared by means of melt blending of TPS with various amounts of MMT (0, 2, 4, and 6 phr). XRD and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) results …

Knowledge Transfer Within A Software Development Team, Geraldine Conway Jul 2009

Knowledge Transfer Within A Software Development Team, Geraldine Conway

Dissertations

Knowledge in a software company is the blood of the company, not surviving without

the valuable knowledge running through its veins. Knowledge is no longer seen as an

object of competitive advantage but is the core of how an organisation operates.

The transfer of tacit knowledge into a format that is usable and can be transmitted to

other individuals is a challenge in any organisation due to the nature of this

knowledge. Tacit knowledge is a challenge to convert into an explicit form as it is hard

to contextualise this knowledge in order for it to be reusable for others. …

Optimization Of Vehicle-To-Grid Scheduling In Constrained Parking Lots, Ahmed Yousuf Saber, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy Jul 2009

Optimization Of Vehicle-To-Grid Scheduling In Constrained Parking Lots, Ahmed Yousuf Saber, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An automatic Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology can contribute to the utility grid. V2G technology has drawn great interest in the recent years. Success of the sophisticated automatic V2G research depends on efficient scheduling of gridable vehicles in constrained parking lots. Parking lots have constraints of space and current limits for V2G. However, V2G can reduce dependencies on small expensive units in the existing power systems as energy storage that can decrease running costs. It can efficiently manage load fluctuation, peak load; however, it increases spinning reserves and reliability. As number of gridable vehicles in V2G is much higher than small units …

Developing A Philosophical Profile Of The Individual For Complex Problem-Solving Through Agent-Based Modeling, Ipek Bozkurt Jul 2009

Developing A Philosophical Profile Of The Individual For Complex Problem-Solving Through Agent-Based Modeling, Ipek Bozkurt

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Research that focuses on the emotional, mental, behavioral and cognitive capabilities of individuals has been abundant within disciplines such as psychology, sociology, and anthropology, among others. The main argument made in this dissertation, however, is that a different perspective is necessary in order to gain insight about individuals when facing the complex problems that are presented within engineering and management disciplines. This is done by developing the Philosophical Profile of the Individual (PPI) that uses epistemology, ontology and teleology as underlying dimensions of philosophical predispositions. The epistemology dimension considers whether an individual is an Empiricist or a Rationalist, the ontology …

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

Motivation: Recognizing that many intrinsically disordered regions in proteins play key roles in vital functions and also in some diseases, identification of the disordered regions has became a demanding process for structure prediction and functional characterization of proteins. Therefore, many studies have been motivated on accurate prediction of disorder. Mostly, machine learning techniques have been used for dealing with the prediction problem of disorder due to the capability of extracting the complex relationships and correlations hidden in large data sets. Results: In this study, a novel method, named Border Vector Detection and Extended Adaptation (BVDEA) was developed for predicting disorder …

A Study Of Meta Learning For Regression, M. Fatih Amasyali, Okan K. Ersoy Jul 2009

A Study Of Meta Learning For Regression, M. Fatih Amasyali, Okan K. Ersoy

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

In regression applications, there is no single algorithm which performs well with all data since the performance of an algorithm depends on the dataset used. In practice, different algorithms / approaches are tried, and the best one is selected in each application. It is meaningful to ask whether there is a different way instead of running such tedious experiments. In meta learning studies, one investigates clues for the performance of an algorithm over a dataset using several features of the dataset. In this context, it is important to estimate which dataset features (meta features) are most significant for the performance …

Stephen Ducharme Publications

The polarization switching kinetics of ferroelectric polymer nanomesas was investigated using piezoresponse force microscopy. The nanomesas were made by self-organization from Langmuir–Blodgett films of a 70% vinylidene fluoride and 30% trifluoroethylene copolymer. The polarization switching time exhibits an exponential dependence on reciprocal voltage that is consistent with nucleation-type switching dynamics.

A New Control Method For Input-Output Harmonic Elimination Of The Pwm Boost-Type Rectifier Under Extreme Unbalanced Operating Conditions, Ana Vladan Stankovic, Ke Chen Jul 2009

A New Control Method For Input-Output Harmonic Elimination Of The Pwm Boost-Type Rectifier Under Extreme Unbalanced Operating Conditions, Ana Vladan Stankovic, Ke Chen

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Under severe fault conditions in the distribution system, not only input voltages but also input impedances must be considered as unbalanced. This paper presents a new control method for input-output harmonic elimination of the pulsewidth-modulation (PWM) boost-type rectifier under conditions of both unbalanced input voltages and unbalanced input impedances. The range of imbalance in both input voltages and input impedances, for which the proposed method is valid, is analyzed in detail. An analytical approach for complete harmonic elimination shows that PWM boost-type rectifier can operate at unity power factor under extremely unbalanced operating conditions resulting in a smooth (constant) power …

A Three Dimensional Numerical Investigation Of A Donor Material In Friction Stir Welding, Justin M. Rice Jul 2009

A Three Dimensional Numerical Investigation Of A Donor Material In Friction Stir Welding, Justin M. Rice

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Excessive tool wear generated during the plunge phase of Friction Stir Welding has slowed the pace of expanding the Friction Stir Welding process to hard materials such as steel. This research uses a finite element model of the Johnson-Cook material constitutive law to investigate the shear stresses, axial forces, and temperatures experienced by the tool and the workpiece during the plunge stage of Friction Stir Welding. The model in this research was developed using the commercially available finite element analysis software ABAQUS/Explicit and consists of both a deformable workpiece and a deformable tool. By implementing the concept of using a …
