Torque Ripple Sensor And Mitigation Mechanism, Jason Neely, Steven Pekarek, Jason M. Banaskavich, Daniel S. Stutts Oct 2006

Torque Ripple Sensor And Mitigation Mechanism, Jason Neely, Steven Pekarek, Jason M. Banaskavich, Daniel S. Stutts

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A torque ripple sensor and method for torque ripple sensing and/or mitigation. A piezoelectric sensor is positioned relative to a motor so that torque fluctuations due to torque ripple of the motor are transmitted to the sensor, resulting in strain of a piezoelectric element. A resulting signal can be amplified and conditioned for determining a magnitude of the torque ripple and/or fed into a feedback loop for applying current control or a counter-torque to the motor for torque ripple mitigation.

Modeling Arsenic Partitioning In Coal-Fired Power Plants, Constance L. Senior, David O. Lignell, Adel F. Sarofim, Arun Mehta

Faculty Publications

Vapor-phase arsenic in coal combustion flue gas causes deactivation of the catalysts used in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems for NOx control. A one-dimensional model has been developed to predict the behavior of arsenic in the postcombustion region of a coal-fired boiler as a function of gas residence time. The purpose of the model is to calculate the partitioning of arsenic between the vapor phase from volatilization and arsenic on the ash particles due to surface reaction and/or condensation at temperatures characteristic of SCR systems. The model accounts for heterogeneous condensation of arsenic on the fly ash, as well …

Efficient Support For Application-Specific Video Adaptation, Jie Huang Oct 2006

Efficient Support For Application-Specific Video Adaptation, Jie Huang

Dissertations and Theses

As video applications become more diverse, video must be adapted in different ways to meet the requirements of different applications when there are insufficient resources. In this dissertation, we address two sorts of requirements that cannot be addressed by existing video adaptation technologies: (i) accommodating large variations in resolution and (ii) collecting video effectively in a multi-hop sensor network. In addition, we also address requirements for implementing video adaptation in a sensor network.

Accommodating large variation in resolution is required by the existence of display devices with widely disparate screen sizes. Existing resolution adaptation technologies usually aim at adapting video …

Optical Emission Study Of Nonthermal Plasma Confirms Reaction Mechanisms Involving Neutral Rather Than Charged Species, Morris D. Argyle, Gui-Bing Zhao, Maciej Radosz Oct 2006

Optical Emission Study Of Nonthermal Plasma Confirms Reaction Mechanisms Involving Neutral Rather Than Charged Species, Morris D. Argyle, Gui-Bing Zhao, Maciej Radosz

Faculty Publications

Charge transfer reactions are commonly used to explain NOX conversion in nonthermal plasma. An analysis of optical emission spectra induced by pulsed corona discharge in NOX-containing argon suggests that, in fact, the contribution of charge transfer reactions to NOX conversion in nonthermal plasma is negligible. During electrical discharge in such gas mixtures, NO(B), an electronic excited state of NO formed due to the dissociative recombination reactions of NO2+ and N2O+ and the optical emission of NO(B) could be a proof that cations are responsible for NOX conversion. However, the optical emission of NO(B) is not observed, leading to the conclusion …

Internal Small Volume Storage Water Heater, Kelly Homan Oct 2006

Internal Small Volume Storage Water Heater, Kelly Homan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The invention concerns devices for water storage, heating and delivery. A storage water heater of the invention provides an amount of unmixed recently heated water from an internal small volume during a draw along with water from a main volume. When water is drawn from the storage water heater, an amount of recently heated water substantially unmixed with the remaining volume of the tank is drawn along with heated water from the remaining volume. Substantial performance increases in the hot water that may be delivered over a period, such as an hour, may be achieved compared to an otherwise identical …

A Simple Electric Field Probe In A Gauss's Law Laboratory, Daniel O. Ludwigsen, Gregory N. Hassold

Physics Publications

Early in our calculus-based introductory course, students are introduced to electric fields and sometimes struggle with the abstraction of a vector field. They have less familiarity with the phenomena associated with electric fields, and the connection between phenomena and mathematical formalism is weaker. Our very next topic is Gauss's law.

Entropy Conserving Probability Transforms And The Entailment Principle, Ronald R. Yager, Vladik Kreinovich Oct 2006

Entropy Conserving Probability Transforms And The Entailment Principle, Ronald R. Yager, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Our main result here is the development of a general procedure for transforming some initial probability distribution into a new probability distribution in a way that the resulting distribution has entropy at least as great as the original distribution. A significant aspect of our approach is that it makes use of the Zadeh's entailment principle which is itself a general procedure for going from an initial possibility distribution to a new possibility distribution so that the resulting possibility has an uncertainty at least as great of the original.

There has been an increasing trend in professional and engineering circles to place greater emphasis on official credentials. These credentials commonly come in the form of certificates – documented recognition by a professional body that an engineer or other professional has the qualifications and technical knowledge to be a practitioner in that field. These certificates are somewhat analogous to merit badges in scouting – the certification is evidence that the holder has a certain minimum level of competence in the subject area. This review will help you decide what certifications are applicable to you and the requirements to obtain a …

Classified Vector Spiht For Wavelet Image Coding, Y. Liang, Scott E. Budge Oct 2006

Classified Vector Spiht For Wavelet Image Coding, Y. Liang, Scott E. Budge

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Wavelet based image coding has been shown to be an effective method, especially at low bit rate. Two successful approaches, space-frequency quantization (SFQ) and set partitioning in hierarchical trees (SPIHT) were proposed to predict insignificant wavelet coefficients. However, both of them employ a simple scalar quantization scheme instead of powerful vector quantization for coding of the significant wavelet coefficients. In this paper we propose a new image coding method that combines the SPIHT type set partitioning technique with classified vector quantization. That is, the set partitioning technique is used to locate significant wavelet coefficient vectors based on vectors' energies. In …

Fisheries Research Contract Report No. 14 - Aquatic Animal Health Subprogram: Development Of A National Translocation Policy Using Abalone And Prawns As Templates For Other Aquatic Species (Frdc Project No. 2004/080) Final Report, Brian Jones, Fran Stephens

Fisheries Research Contract Reports

The use of scientifically based hazard identification, risk analysis and risk management is fundamental to managing unwanted effects. Hazards, such as quarantine incursions, will continue to occur despite the use of risk assessment methodologies but the frequency and severity of their occurrence will be reduced.

This was recognised by the Ministerial Council on Forestry, Fisheries and Aquaculture in 1999 when they published the "National policy for the translocation of live aquatic organisms".

This FRDC project provides a simple risk assessment methodology based on the Australian Standard for Risk Management (AS/NZS 4360: 2004) and one that is consistent with the Ministerial …

Investigation Of Ethanol Dehydration In A Microscale Pervaporation Process, Sudhir Ramprasad Oct 2006

Investigation Of Ethanol Dehydration In A Microscale Pervaporation Process, Sudhir Ramprasad

Doctoral Dissertations

Challenges due to surface tension effects for vaporization in microchannels have restricted the implementation of conventional separation processes that involve liquid boiling in a micro-chemical system. However, membrane separations offer a feasible alternative for exploring the advantages of liquid phase separation in micro-chemical systems. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the process intensification effects in a microscale pervaporation process with experiments involving the separation of ethanol/water using a commercially available polymer dehydration membrane.

The microchannels in the microseparator were fabricated by the dry etch process at Louisiana Tech University. Microchannel depths of 20 to 120 μm, with …

Two Etudes On Combining Probabilistic And Interval Uncertainty: Processing Correlations And Measuring Loss Of Privacy, Martine Ceberio, Gang Xiang, Luc Longpre, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen, Daniel Berleant Oct 2006

Two Etudes On Combining Probabilistic And Interval Uncertainty: Processing Correlations And Measuring Loss Of Privacy, Martine Ceberio, Gang Xiang, Luc Longpre, Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen, Daniel Berleant

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, there is a need to combine interval and probabilistic uncertainty. The need for such a combination leads to two types of problems: (1) how to process the given combined uncertainty, and (2) how to gauge the amount of uncertainty and -- a related question -- how to best decrease this uncertainty. In our research, we concentrate on these two types of problems. In this paper, we present two examples that illustrate how the corresponding problems can be solved.

The existing experimental data is evaluated for statistical validation. It is then subjected to individual and …

Optimization Of Active Rendezvous Trajectories By Genetic Algorithms, Marie Emmanuelle Ricour Oct 2006

Optimization Of Active Rendezvous Trajectories By Genetic Algorithms, Marie Emmanuelle Ricour

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

Trajectory optimization is and will remain a hot topic in the engineering field. Because analytical or exact solutions are often difficult and sometimes impossible to compute, there is a need for alternative and efficient methods. UnderWater Vehicles (UWV) trajectories and rendezvous trajectories of continuous low-thrust spacecraft are examined. One of the methods to solve such problems is the Genetic Algorithm (GA) method. In this work, a GA has been developed using Matlab®. It treats possible solutions to the studied problems as individuals and eventually converges to an optimal or near optimal solution. Genetic Algorithms have been used previously to solve …

The Sensitivity To Motion Sickness Induced By Aircraft And Flight Training Devices And The Role Of Experience During Flight Training, Angela M. Baskin

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The incidence and severity of motion sickness, which can be incapacitating and can prevent training, is ill-established in career paths where motion or simulated motion is commonplace. To assess different aspects of this problem, each of 175 Embry-Riddle student pilots early in their training and 43 Embry-Riddle student non-pilots participated in one of four parts of this study. The Motion History Questionnaire was utilized to compare pilot and non-pilot groups on reported motion sickness sensitivity; non-pilots reported significantly more sensitivity than did pilots for 3 out of 7 items included in the composite score, suggesting possible career self-selection (though composite …
