Evaluation Of Probabilistic Methodology For Predicting Satellite Tracking Resources, Matthew Lynn Stubbe Oct 2006

Evaluation Of Probabilistic Methodology For Predicting Satellite Tracking Resources, Matthew Lynn Stubbe

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

This research evaluates a probabilistic methodology for estimating the ability of satellite tracking networks to provide tracking and data acquisition services to large constellations of satellites. This approach, developed by Hagar is evaluated using Monte Carlo simulations of optimal satellite contact scheduling on a tracking network for a certain class of satellites. The actual results of the scheduled Monte Carlo simulations were then compared to the predicted values computed with Hagar's methodology for a range constellation and network sizes. Comparison methods include percent difference, a Wilcoxon signed ranks test and a Mann-Whitney U test.

The Monte Carlo simulations were run …

Fluorescent Enzymatic Smart Tattoos Comprising Hybrid Silicate Microparticles, Metalloporphyrin Complexes, And Mass Transport-Limiting Nanofilms, Erich Wayne Stein Oct 2006

Fluorescent Enzymatic Smart Tattoos Comprising Hybrid Silicate Microparticles, Metalloporphyrin Complexes, And Mass Transport-Limiting Nanofilms, Erich Wayne Stein

Doctoral Dissertations

Diabetics are often required to self-monitor blood glucose levels to effectively deliver prescribed therapies. However, the pain and bother associated with traditional finger-prick measurements often result in decreased patient compliance and therefore poor disease management, which could result in the early-onset of complications. Enzymatic "smart tattoos"—implantable luminescent particles that may be transdermally interrogated with light—are being pursued as minimally-invasive diabetic monitoring devices, with hopes of increasing diabetic compliance by reducing excessive pain and bother associated with finger-prick measurements. These devices typically comprise an oxygen-quenched luminescent dye and glucose oxidase (GOx), an enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of β-D-glucose. Under glucose-limited …

Millimeter-Wave Differential Probe For Nondestructive Detection Of Corrosion Precursor Pitting, Mohammad Tayeb Ahmad Ghasr, Brian D. Carroll, Sergey Kharkovsky, Russell A. Austin, R. Zoughi Oct 2006

Millimeter-Wave Differential Probe For Nondestructive Detection Of Corrosion Precursor Pitting, Mohammad Tayeb Ahmad Ghasr, Brian D. Carroll, Sergey Kharkovsky, Russell A. Austin, R. Zoughi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Critical aircraft structural components, such as wings and fuselages, are exposed to harsh environments that vary considerably in temperature and moisture content. In most cases, the corrosion is hidden under paint and primer and cannot be visually detected. The initiation of corrosion is preceded by the presence of corrosion precursor pitting. Near-field millimeter-wave nondestructive testing (NDT) methods have been successfully used for detecting corrosion precursor pitting in exposed as well as painted aluminum substrates. However, near-field millimeter-wave measurements are susceptible to clutter that may mask indications of small defects such as pitting. Standoff distance variation produces an unwanted intensity gradient …

Nonlinear Modified Pi Control Of Multi-Module Gcscs In A Large Power System, Swakshar Ray, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy Oct 2006

Nonlinear Modified Pi Control Of Multi-Module Gcscs In A Large Power System, Swakshar Ray, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper presents the design of a new control strategy for gate-controlled series compensators (GCSCs). GCSCs are new FACTS devices which can provide active power flow control on a transmission line. Proper placement of GCSCs in proximity to generators can also provide damping to system oscillations. This paper has investigated the effectiveness of multiple multi-module gate controlled series compensators (MMGCSCs) for large power systems. MMGCSCs can be less expensive devices with wide range of control of capacitive reactance in series with transmission lines. A nonlinear modified PI (NMPI) control is developed to provide power flow control and enhanced transient stability …

Prediction Of Intrauterine Pressure From Electrohysterography Using Optimal Linear Filtering, Mark D. Skowronski, John G. Harris, Dorothee E. Marossero, Rodney K. Edwards, Tammy Yachabach Euliano

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We propose a method of predicting intrauterine pressure (IUP) from external electrohysterograms (EHG) using a causal FIR Wiener filter. IUP and 8-channel EHG data were collected simultaneously from 14 laboring patients at term, and prediction models were trained and tested using 10-min windows for each patient and channel. RMS prediction error varied between 5-14 mmHg across all patients. We performed a 4-way analysis of variance on the RMS error, which varied across patients, channels, time (test window) and model (train window). The patient-channel interaction was the most significant factor while channel alone was not significant, indicating that different channels produced …

Bio-Inspired Algorithms For The Design Of Multiple Optimal Power System Stabilizers: Sppso And Bfa, Tridib Kumar Das, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy Oct 2006

Bio-Inspired Algorithms For The Design Of Multiple Optimal Power System Stabilizers: Sppso And Bfa, Tridib Kumar Das, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Power System Stabilizers (PSSs) provide stabilizing control signals to excitation systems to damp out inter-area and intra-area oscillations. The PSS must be optimally tuned to accommodate the variations in the system dynamics. Designing multiple optimal PSSs is a challenging task for researchers. This paper presents the comparison between two bio-inspired algorithms: a Small Population based Particle Swarm Optimization (SPPSO) and the Bacterial Foraging Algorithm (BFA) for the simultaneous tuning of a number of PSSs in a multi-machine power system. The cost function to be optimized by both algorithms takes into consideration the time domain transient responses. The effectiveness of the …

Efficient And Robust Delay-Insensitive Qca (Quantum-Dot Cellular Automata) Design, Minsu Choi, Myungsu Choi, Zachary D. Patitz, Nohpill Park Oct 2006

Efficient And Robust Delay-Insensitive Qca (Quantum-Dot Cellular Automata) Design, Minsu Choi, Myungsu Choi, Zachary D. Patitz, Nohpill Park

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The concept of clocking for QCA, referred to as the four-phase clocking, is widely used. However, inherited characteristics of QCA, such as the way to hold state, the way to synchronize data flows, and the way to power QCA cells, make the design of QCA circuits quite different from VLSI and introduce a variety of new design challenges. The most severe challenges are due to the fact that the overall timing of a QCA circuit is mainly dependent upon its layout. This issue is commonly referred to as the "layout =timing" problem. To circumvent the problem, a novel self-timed circuit …

Fault Modeling In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ahmed A. Elmiligui Oct 2006

Fault Modeling In Wireless Sensor Networks, Ahmed A. Elmiligui

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A large amount of research has been done in the area of wireless sensor networks (WSN), but not much work has been done in modeling the fault tolerance and reliability of these networks. In this thesis, the fault tolerance of a WSN to node failures is studied and an analytical reliability model of the network is derived. A valid reliability model of a network could reveal an estimate of the network's performance before it is deployed.

A wireless sensor network was modeled as a k-out-of-n system and a generic fault tolerant framework for the network in terms of node losses …

Load Characteristics For An Aluminum Alloy Friction Stir Weld, Lewis T. Henderson Oct 2006

Load Characteristics For An Aluminum Alloy Friction Stir Weld, Lewis T. Henderson

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

A process was developed to modify a vintage 1960's milling machine to allow axial load measurements to be taken and to allow automated control of the plunging stage during the friction stir welding process. The installation of a load cell in the housing of the mill machine was accomplished by way of modifying internal machine parts and introducing new external hardware. Successful post removal inspections and operational checks show that the conversion of a vintage 1960's milling machine to allow axial load measurements is feasible. The automation of the plunge process during friction stir welding was proven feasible by the …

Reverse Decision Making And Goal Attainment A Proof Of Concept As A New Approach To The Decision Making Process Under Uncertainty, Shitalkumar S. Sabne

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Decision making occurs when one must choose among alternatives. However, in uncertain environments where problems are complex and decision makers lack complete knowledge of the situation as well as decision alternatives, it's not possible for them to select an optimal decision outcome by 'Traditional Decision Approaches'. At present Reverse Decision Making is the central, although new and unproved, approach of Old Dominion University's Engineering Management and Systems Engineering research on decision making process for uncertain and complex situations. Even though research in decision making spans over one hundred years, there are still important problems which remain to be addressed.

There …

Fault Arrangements And Their Effect On The Performance Of Wireless Sensor Networks, Dwayne Sayone Blai Oct 2006

Fault Arrangements And Their Effect On The Performance Of Wireless Sensor Networks, Dwayne Sayone Blai

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Wireless sensor networks face many reliability challenges. The networks are deployed in open, hostile environments, making them easily susceptible to network failure. As a result, there are countless faults that can occur in sensor networks, from component failure to outside attacks. Outside attacks take place when an adversary gains control over a node or set of nodes in the network. Outside attackers can destroy a network in numerous ways such as random attacks, clustering attacks, search-based attacks, etc. The method and strategy used in each of these attacks directly affects the network's reliability. Understanding how these adversaries are positioned is …

Interfacial Stick-Slip Transition In Simple Shear Of Entangled Melts, Pouyan E. Boukany, Prashant Tapadia, Shi-Qing Wang Oct 2006

Interfacial Stick-Slip Transition In Simple Shear Of Entangled Melts, Pouyan E. Boukany, Prashant Tapadia, Shi-Qing Wang

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

This article describes a systematic investigation of a discontinuous interfacial stick-slip transition (SST) in simple shear of monodisperse entangled 1,4-polybutadiene (PBD) and polyisoprene (PIP) melts with different molecular weights and architecture, using a specially designed controlled-force shear rheometer. The magnitude of the transition is found to be determined by the level of chain entanglement. Specifically, the dependence of extrapolation length b on molecular weight as b similar to M-w(3.4) and of the melt viscosity as b similar to eta is consistent with the observations based on capillary rheometric studies [X. Yang et al., Rheol. Acta 37, 415-423 (1998)]. The interfacial …

Designing A Nanotube Using Naturally Occurring Protein Building Blocks, Jie Zheng Oct 2006

Designing A Nanotube Using Naturally Occurring Protein Building Blocks, Jie Zheng

Chemical, Biomolecular, and Corrosion Engineering Faculty Research

Here our goal is to carry out nanotube design using naturally occurring protein building blocks. Inspection of the protein structural database reveals the richness of the conformations of proteins, their parts, and their chemistry. Given target functional protein nanotube geometry, our strategy involves scanning a library of candidate building blocks, combinatorially assembling them into the shape and testing its stability. Since self-assembly takes place on time scales not affordable for computations, here we propose a strategy for the very first step in protein nanotube design: we map the candidate building blocks onto a planar sheet and wrap the sheet around …

Textual Case-Based Reasoning For Spam Filtering: A Comparison Of Feature-Based And Feature-Free Approaches, Sarah Jane Delany, Derek Bridge Oct 2006

Textual Case-Based Reasoning For Spam Filtering: A Comparison Of Feature-Based And Feature-Free Approaches, Sarah Jane Delany, Derek Bridge

Articles

Spam filtering is a text classification task to which Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) has been successfully applied. We describe the ECUE system, which classifies emails using a feature-based form of textual CBR. Then, we describe an alternative way to compute the distances between cases in a feature-free fashion, using a distance measure based on text compression. This distance measure has the advantages of having no set-up costs and being resilient to concept drift. We report an empirical comparison, which shows the feature-free approach to be more accurate than the feature-based system. These results are fairly robust over different compression algorithms in …

An Unique Ultracapacitor Direct Integration Scheme In Multilevel Motor Drives For Large Vehicle Propulsion, Shuai Lu, Keith Corzine, Mehdi Ferdowsi Oct 2006

An Unique Ultracapacitor Direct Integration Scheme In Multilevel Motor Drives For Large Vehicle Propulsion, Shuai Lu, Keith Corzine, Mehdi Ferdowsi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper introduces a new set of methods to directly integrate ultracapacitor banks into cascaded multilevel inverters used for large vehicle propulsion. The idea is to replace the regular dc-link capacitors with ultracapacitors in order to combine the energy storage unit and motor drive. This approach eliminates the need for an interfacing dc-dc converter and considerably improves the efficiency of regenerative braking energy restoration in electric and hybrid vehicles. Utilizing the proposed modulation control set, the two cascaded inverters can have their dc voltage levels maintained at any ratio (even a noninteger ratio) or dynamically varied over a wide range …

Inherited Redundancy And Configurability Utilization For Repairing Nanowire Crossbars With Clustered Defects, Yadunandana Yellambalase, Minsu Choi, Yong-Bin Kim

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

With the recent development of nanoscale materials and assembly techniques, it is envisioned to build high-density reconfigurable systems which have never been achieved by the photolithography. Various reconfigurable architectures have been proposed based on nanowire crossbar structure as the primitive building block. Unfortunately, high-density systems consisting of nanometer-scale elements are likely to have many imperfections and variations; thus, defect-tolerance is considered as one of the most exigent challenges. In this paper, we evaluate three different logic mapping algorithms with defect avoidance to circumvent clustered defective crosspoints in nanowire reconfigurable crossbar architectures. The effectiveness of inherited redundancy and configurability utilization is …

Intelligent Integration Of A Wind Farm To An Utility Power Network With Improved Voltage Stability, V. K. Polisetty, Sandhya R. Jetti, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley Oct 2006

Intelligent Integration Of A Wind Farm To An Utility Power Network With Improved Voltage Stability, V. K. Polisetty, Sandhya R. Jetti, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Ronald G. Harley

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The increasing effect of wind energy generation will influence the dynamic behavior of power systems by interacting with conventional generation and loads. Due to the inherent characteristics of wind turbines, non-uniform power production causes variations in system voltage and frequency. Therefore, a wind farm requires high reactive power compensation. Flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) devices such as SVCs inject reactive power into the system which helps in maintaining a better voltage profile. This paper presents the design of a linear and a nonlinear coordinating controller between a SVC and the wind farm inverter at the point of interconnection. The performances …

An Initial Non-Equilibrium Porous-Media Model For Cfd Simulation Of Stirling Regenerators, Roy C. Tew, Terry Simon, David Gedeon, Mounir B. Ibrahim, Wei Rong Oct 2006

An Initial Non-Equilibrium Porous-Media Model For Cfd Simulation Of Stirling Regenerators, Roy C. Tew, Terry Simon, David Gedeon, Mounir B. Ibrahim, Wei Rong

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

The objective of this paper is to define empirical parameters for an initial thermal non-equilibrium porous-media model for use in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) codes for simulation of Stirling regenerators. The two codes currently used at Glenn Research Center for Stirling modeling are Fluent and CFD-ACE. The codes’ porous-media models are equilibrium models, which assume solid matrix and fluid are in thermal equilibrium. This is believed to be a poor assumption for Stirling regenerators; Stirling 1–D regenerator models, used in Stirling design, use non-equilibrium regenerator models and suggest regenerator matrix and gas average temperatures can differ by several degrees at …

Transient Response Of Rotor On Rolling-Element Bearings With Clearance, David P. Fleming, Brian T. Murphy, Jerzy T. Sawicki, J. V. Poplawski Oct 2006

Transient Response Of Rotor On Rolling-Element Bearings With Clearance, David P. Fleming, Brian T. Murphy, Jerzy T. Sawicki, J. V. Poplawski

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Internal clearance in rolling element bearings is usually present to allow for radial and axial growth of the rotor-bearing system and to accommodate bearing fit-up. The presence of this clearance also introduces a “dead band” into the load-deflection behavior of the bearing. Previous studies demonstrated that the presence of dead band clearance might have a significant effect on synchronous rotor response. In this work, the authors investigate transient response of a rotor supported on rolling element bearings with internal clearance. In addition, the stiffness of the bearings varies nonlinearly with bearing deflection and with speed. Bearing properties were accurately calculated …
