Effect Of Baceo3 And Basno3 Additives On Microstructural Development And Critical Current Density Of Melt Textured Yba2cu3o7-X, Oratai Jongprateep, Fatih Dogan, Michael Strasik, Kevin E. Mccrary

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Improvement of superconducting properties, such as critical current density Jc and trapped magnetic field, of melt textured YBa2Cu3O7-x (Y123) require introducing of effective pinning sites, e.g., nonsuperconducting inclusions, twin boundaries and other defects. It has been shown that addition of small quantities of BaCeO3 (< 0.5 wt.%) into Y123 results in an increase of the J/sub c/. However, higher cerium concentrations affect the solidification process and inhibit the growth of melt textured Y123 single crystals. In this study, the effect of BaCeO/sub 3/ additions on the growth and microstructural development of melt textured Y123 single crystals were investigated. The relationship between the solidification kinetics, microstructural development and superconducting properties of Y123 melt textured single crystals with cerium additives is discussed.

Faculty Publications

Human thymidylate synthase, a target in cancer chemotherapy, was crystallized from PEG 3350 with 30 mM ammonium sulfate (AS) in the crystallization medium. The crystals are isomorphous with the high-salt crystals (~2.0 M AS) and the structure has been solved and refined (R = 22.6%, Rfree = 24.3%) at 1.8 Å resolution. The high- and low-AS-concentration structures are quite similar, with loop 181-197 is in the inactive conformation. Also, residues 95-106 and 129-135 (eukaryotic inserts region) show high mobility as assessed by poor electron density and high values of crystallographic temperature factors (residues 1-25 and 108-129 are disordered in both …

Polymer-Mediated Synthesis Of Highly Dispersed Pt Nanoparticles On Carbon Black, Min Chen, Yangchuan Xing Sep 2005

Polymer-Mediated Synthesis Of Highly Dispersed Pt Nanoparticles On Carbon Black, Min Chen, Yangchuan Xing

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new method was developed to prepare highly dispersed Pt nanoparticles on carbon black to use as proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell catalysts. This method involves using a polymer, poly-(vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP), to prevent particle aggregation and thereby reduce nanoparticle sizes to achieve high dispersion. It was found that Pt nanoparticles mediated by PVP are smaller than those obtained without PVP and have a narrower size distribution. Well-dispersed Pt nanoparticles with metal loadings from 5 to 35 wt % were obtained on carbon black (Vulcan XC-72R). It was found that well-dispersed Pt nanoparticles on carbon black could be synthesized at …

Computer Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

There are several approaches to the hardware/software design in embedded systems, ranging from the traditional sequential methods which focus on the determination of the hardware architecture prior to software design, to newer object-oriented approaches that attempt to apply software engineering methods to hardware design without a systematic process. This paper discusses a structured object-oriented methodology for the integrated co-analysis and co-design of hardware/software systems using an extended high order object-oriented modeling technique (HOOMT). This methodology offers a uniform method for hardware and software developers to jointly develop the specifications for and partitioning of the hardware and software components of a …

Enhancement Of Protein Secretion In Pichia Pastoris By Overexpression Of Protein Disulfide Isomerase, Mehmet İnan, Dinesh Aryasomayajula, Jayanta Sinha, Michael M. Meagher

Papers in Biochemical Engineering

A potential vaccine candidate, Necator americanus secretory protein (Na-ASP1), against hookworm infections, has been expressed in Pichia pastoris. Na- ASP1, a 45 kDa protein containing 20 cysteines, was directed outside the cell by fusing the protein to the preprosequence of the α-mating factor of Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Most of the protein produced by single copy clones was secreted outside the cell. However, increasing gene copy number of Na-ASP1 protein in P. pastoris saturated secretory capacity and therefore, decreased the amount of secreted protein in clones harboring multiple copies of Na-ASP1 gene. Overexpression of the …

A Motion Planning Processor On Reconfigurable Hardware, Nuzhet Atay, Burchan Bayazit Sep 2005

A Motion Planning Processor On Reconfigurable Hardware, Nuzhet Atay, Burchan Bayazit

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Motion planning algorithms enable us to find feasible paths for moving objects. These algorithms utilize feasibility checks to differentiate valid paths from invalid ones. Unfortunately, the computationally expensive nature of such checks reduces the effectiveness of motion planning algorithms. However, by using hardware acceleration to speed up the feasibility checks, we can greatly enhance the performance of the motion planning algorithms. Of course, such acceleration is not limited to feasibility checks; other components of motion planning algorithms can also be accelerated using specially designed hardware. A Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) is a great platform to support such an acceleration. …

Effect Of Thermal Transport On Spatiotemporal Emergence Of Lamellar Branching Morphology During Polymer Spherulitic Growth, Haijun Xu, Wirunya Keawwattana, Thein Kyu Sep 2005

Effect Of Thermal Transport On Spatiotemporal Emergence Of Lamellar Branching Morphology During Polymer Spherulitic Growth, Haijun Xu, Wirunya Keawwattana, Thein Kyu

College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

Spatiotemporal emergence of lamellar branching morphology of polymer spherulite has been investigated theoretically in the framework of a phase field model by coupling a crystal solidification potential pertaining to a nonconserved crystal order parameter with a temperature field generated by latent heat of crystallization. A local free-energy density having an asymmetric double well has been utilized to account for a first-order phase transition such as crystallization. To account for the polymorphous nature of polymer crystallization, the phase field order parameter of crystal at the solidification potential of the double-well local free-energy density is modified to be supercooling dependent. The heat …

Validation Of Lower Limb Surrogates As Injury Assessment Tools In Floor Impacts Due To Anti-Vehicular Landmine Explosions, Ana Barbir Sep 2005

Validation Of Lower Limb Surrogates As Injury Assessment Tools In Floor Impacts Due To Anti-Vehicular Landmine Explosions, Ana Barbir

Wayne State University Theses

The aim of this study is to assess the ability of lower limb surrogates to predict injury due to floor impact in military vehicles during anti-vehicular (AV) landmine explosions. Most such surrogates have originally been constructed for use in automotive crash applications, where footwell intrusion is the main source of lower limb injury. Land mine explosions, however, create different loading conditions on the lower leg. Comparatively, the peak loads are higher but the durations are shorter and the loading occurs axially through the tibia, instead of the axial loading combined with foot rotation that is often observed in automotive applications. …

Co-Generation Of Text And Graphics, David G. Novick, Brian Lowe Sep 2005

Co-Generation Of Text And Graphics, David G. Novick, Brian Lowe

Departmental Papers (CS)

To reduce potential discrepancies between textual and graphical content in documentation, it is possible to produce both text and graphics from a single common source. One approach to co-generation of text and graphics uses a single logical specification; a second approach starts with CAD-based representation and produces a corresponding textual account. This paper explores these two different approaches, reports the results of using prototypes embodying the approaches to represent simple figures, and discusses issues that were identified through use of the prototypes. While it appears feasible to co-generate text and graphics automatically, the process raises deep issues of design of …

Usability Over Time, Valerie Mendoza, David G. Novick Sep 2005

Usability Over Time, Valerie Mendoza, David G. Novick

Departmental Papers (CS)

Testing of usability could perhaps be more accurately described as testing of learnability. We know more about the problems of novice users than we know of the problems of experienced users. To understand how these problems differ, and to understand how usability problems change as users change from novice to experienced, we conducted a longitudinal study of usability among middle-school teachers creating Web sites. The study looked at the use both the use of documentation and the underlying software, tracking the causes and extent of user frustration over eight weeks. We validated a categorization scheme for frustration episodes. We found …

Compliant Ortho-Planar Spring Behavior Under Complex Loads, Nathan Oliver Rasmussen Sep 2005

Compliant Ortho-Planar Spring Behavior Under Complex Loads, Nathan Oliver Rasmussen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents research on the feasibility of applying compliant-ortho-planar springs (COPS) to rotational applications. The primary motivation of this research is the application of COPS to a continuously variable transmission (CVT). The design space limitations, loading conditions, stresses, stress concentrations, and limitations of current design tools, such as pseudo-rigid-body models (PRBM) for COPS, are discussed. A new 3D PRBM is presented along with a discussion on the possible applications of such to a rotating COPS. Stress stiffening and lateral stability are two major phenomena occurring in a rotating COPS. Both phenomena are a direct result of the inertial loads …

Loss Functions And Framework For Regional Flood Damage Estimation In Residential Area, Jui-Lin Kang, Ming-Daw Su, Ling-Fang Chang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The risks of flooding damages for a region increase as the population and economy development increased in that area. Damage assessment and risk analysis are important issues for risk management and hazard mitigation. There are huge amount of data involved in the process of regional damage assessment and most of these data are spatially and temporally distributed. This paper focuses on the use of spatial data for capture of spatial characteristics of damage in natural calamities. Because it affects a large number of persons and families, flood damages in the residential area usually attract major attentions in regional flood hazard …

Effects Of Closure Models On Supercavitating Bubble Development, Bin-Chen Wu, Jiahn-Horng Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Effects of different cavity closure models on the development sheet supercavitation of two-dimensional hydrofoils were examined in this report. The study was carried out under the assumption of potential flow for which a cavity closure model was needed. A potential-based boundary element method has been developed for this purpose. The models we employed included the constant velocity model and the short plate termination model. Several different airfoil shapes were tested. Their effects on the cavity shape, lift coefficient, cavity volume and computation efficiency were studied. Careful investigations show that closure models have insignificant influence on physical quantities, but do have …

Design And Implementation Of A Low-Voltage 2.4-Ghz Cmos Rf Receiver Front-End For Wireless Communication, Wan-Rone Liou, Mei-Ling Yeh, Chun-An Tsai, Shun-Hsyung Chang Sep 2005

Design And Implementation Of A Low-Voltage 2.4-Ghz Cmos Rf Receiver Front-End For Wireless Communication, Wan-Rone Liou, Mei-Ling Yeh, Chun-An Tsai, Shun-Hsyung Chang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This paper presents the design of a 1.5 V CMOS RF receiver front-end system which contains a low noise amplifier (LNA) with band pass filter and a down conversion mixer. An inter-stage matching network is added between the common-source and common-gate transistors in the LNA’s first stage to further lower the noise and enhance the overall gain. An inductor is used in this inter-stage matching network because of the extra capacitive of MOSFETs in the LNA. The maximum gain achieved of this LNA is 15 dB. The single square-law structure was implemented for this low power consumption and high linearity …

A Study Of Non-Linear Vibrational Behavior Of Cracked Structures By The Finite Element Method, Tzuo-Liang Luo, James Shih-Shyn Wu, Jui-Pin Hung Sep 2005

A Study Of Non-Linear Vibrational Behavior Of Cracked Structures By The Finite Element Method, Tzuo-Liang Luo, James Shih-Shyn Wu, Jui-Pin Hung

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Numerical and experimental investigations provide a link to the location and size of cracks caused by natural vibrations. Cracks may generally result in the variation of structural stiffness and hence enable structures to vibrate nonlinearly. In order to understand the vibrational behavior of crack structures accurately, the study proposes a general and efficient algorithm based on the finite element assumptions and the bilinear vibrational theory. All formulae are derived from the time domain properly and may apply to the overall non-linear motion cycle completely. The contact effect is also considered by introducing the degree of penetration on the cracked surface. …

A Grid-Based Gis Approach To Regional Flood Damage Assessment, Ming-Daw Su, Jui-Lin Kang, Ling-Fang Chang, Albert S Chen Sep 2005

A Grid-Based Gis Approach To Regional Flood Damage Assessment, Ming-Daw Su, Jui-Lin Kang, Ling-Fang Chang, Albert S Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Regional flood risk assessment is the base for a sound and comprehensive risk planning or management. The regional flood loss is the sum of the damages in all the flooded parcels. The data involved in this process are multifarious and difficult to establish and maintain especially in the developing countries that suffer most often from the flood hazard. A grid-based GIS approach to regional flood damage assessment is proposed in this paper. Aggregated census data that are relatively available were used instead of the data at parcel level. An algorithm was proposed to disaggregated these aggregated census data into spatially …

Acoustic Point-Source Reflection From A Seabed With A Non-Uniform Fluid-Like Sediment Layer, Jin-Yuan Liu, Chung-Ray Chu, Yung-Hong Wu, Hsin-Hung Chen Sep 2005

Acoustic Point-Source Reflection From A Seabed With A Non-Uniform Fluid-Like Sediment Layer, Jin-Yuan Liu, Chung-Ray Chu, Yung-Hong Wu, Hsin-Hung Chen

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Acoustic point-source reflection from a non-uniform seabed within which the density and sound speed vary continuously with depth is considered in this paper. This fundamental problem has illuminated many interesting phenomena about the effects of sediment stratification on acoustic wave interactions with the seabed. The analysis employs the analytical solutions for the Helmholtz equation in the sediment layer, in which the density and the sound speed are, respectively, described by three kinds of geological models. The results have demonstrated that the effects of sediment stratification are confined in a region in range, where the reflection field is dominated by the …

Identification Of Rear-End Crash Patterns On Instrumented Freeways: A Data Mining Approach, A. Pande, M. Abdel-Aty Sep 2005

Identification Of Rear-End Crash Patterns On Instrumented Freeways: A Data Mining Approach, A. Pande, M. Abdel-Aty

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Data mining is the analysis of large “observational” datasets to find unsuspected relationships that might be useful to the data owner. It typically involves analysis where objectives of the mining exercise have no bearing on the data collection strategy. Freeway traffic surveillance data collected through underground loop detectors is one such “observational” database maintained for various ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) applications such as travel time prediction etc. In this research data mining process is used to relate this surrogate measure of traffic conditions (data from freeway loop detectors) with occurrence of rear-end crashes on freeways. The results from this analysis …

Traffic Surveillance From A Safety Perspective: An Its Data Application, M. Abdel-Aty, A. Pande, N. Uddin Sep 2005

Traffic Surveillance From A Safety Perspective: An Its Data Application, M. Abdel-Aty, A. Pande, N. Uddin

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Reactive traffic management strategies such as incident detection are becoming less relevant with the advancement of mobile phone usage. Freeway management in the 21st century needs to shift focus toward proactive strategies that include anticipating incidents such as the crashes. “Predicting” crash occurrences would also be the key to traffic safety. A two-step approach to identify freeway locations with high probability of crashes through real-time traffic surveillance data is presented here. For this study historical crash and corresponding traffic data from loop detectors were gathered from a 58-km (36-mile) corridor of Interstate-4. Following an exploratory analysis two types of …
