Qca-Based Majority Gate Design Under Radius Of Effect-Induced Faults, Zachary D. Patitz, Nohpill Park, Minsu Choi, Fred J. Meyer
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
This paper presents reliable QCA cell structures for designing single clock-controlled majority gates with a tolerance to radius of effect-induced faults, for use as a basic building component for carry look-ahead adder. Realizable quantum computing is still well in the future due to the complexity of the quantum mechanics that govern them. In this regard, QCA-based system design is a challenging task since each cell''s state must interact with all the cells that are in its energy-effective range in its clocking zone, referred to as its radius of effect. This paper proposes a design approach for majority gates to overcome …

Conjugate Gradient Method For Solving System Of Nonlinear Equations, Abhijit Prakash Honrao
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
In this thesis, the conjugate gradient method will be extended to solve symmetric and non-symmetric nonlinear equations. Several variations of the conjugate gradient method are introduced and investigated. To extend the conjugate gradient method for nonlinear problems, there are four methods discussed; the pre-conditioning conjugate gradient method, the pre-conditioning conjugate gradient method for better initial guess, the fixed point conjugate gradient method and the fixed point conjugate gradient method for better initial guess. The four methods are discussed in detail and tested on various numerical examples. The linear numerical examples include a two dimensional structural frame problem, a Hilbert matrix …

An Analysis Of A Finite Element Human Brain In Low Speed Rear Impact Automobile Collision Comparison, Model Development And Study Using Tno Rear Impact Dummy, Mangesh S. Kadam
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
According to the National Safety Council, rear-end collisions are the most common types of collisions with approximately two and a half million cases reported every year. Crash tests indicate a change of vehicle velocity of 4km/h (2.5 mph) may produce occupant symptoms. Vehicle damage may not occur until 14-15km/h (8.7 mph) (Davis CG, 1998). Occupants, in rear-end vehicle impacts sustain a motion associated with whiplash, where the head snaps backwards quickly, resulting in linear and/or angular acceleration forces acting on the brain. This angular motion tends to subject the brain to shear deformations from rapid rotation. This study is a …
Complexity Measure Of A Product Or Process By Application Of Fuzzy Multi-Attribute Utility Theory, Shrikant Chandrakant Nagpure
Complexity Measure Of A Product Or Process By Application Of Fuzzy Multi-Attribute Utility Theory, Shrikant Chandrakant Nagpure
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
During the early phases of design, the development cost of complex products or systems is very difficult to obtain because of the uncertainties related to their work breakdown structures and the wide choice of manufacturing technologies with no historical data specific to these products. This thesis presents a method to derive a complexity index to capture the non-additive property and inherent uncertainty, i.e. fuzziness, of the technologies that could be used for complex objects. This complexity index can then be used as a cost index for comparing various candidate manufacturing processes.

Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
We have tested the effectiveness of polyethylene glycol (PEG) to restore the integrity of neuronal membranes after mechanical damage secondary to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) produced by a standardized head injury model in rats. We provide additional detail on the standardization of this model, particularly the use and storage of foam bedding that serves to both support the animal during the impact procedure and to dampen the acceleration of the brass weight. Further, we employed a dye exclusion technique using ethidium bromide (EB; quantitative evaluation) and horseradish peroxidase (HRP; qualitative evaluation). Both have been successfully used previously to evaluate …

A Dose-Response Curve For The Negative Bias Pressure Of An Intrathoracic Pressure Regulator During Cpr, Charles F. Babbs, Demetris Yannopoulos
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
An intrathoracic pressure regulator (ITPR) is a device that can be added to the external end of an endotracheal tube to create controlled negative airway pressure between positive pressure ventilations. The resulting downward bias of the airway pressure baseline promotes increased venous return and enhanced circulation during CPR and also during hypovolemic shock. In the present study we exercised a mathematical model of the human cardiopulmonary system, including airways, lungs, a 4 chambered heart, great vessels, peripheral vascular beds, and the biomechanics of chest compression and recoil, to determine the relationship between systemic perfusion pressure during CPR and the value …

Optimal Control Theory Applied To A Difference Equation Model Of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation, Eunok Jung, Charles F. Babbs, Suzanne Lenhart, Vladimir A. Protopoescu
Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Faculty Publications
Objective: To apply the mathematical techniques of optimal control theory (OCT) to a validated model of the human circulation during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), so as to discover improved waveforms for chest compression and decompression that maximize the systemic perfusion pressure (SPP). Methods: The human circulatory system is represented by seven difference equations, which describe the pressure changes in systemic vascular compartments caused by chest compression. The forcing term is the intrathoracic pressure generated by the external chest compression, which is taken as the “control” variable for the system. The optimum waveform of this forcing pressure as a function of time, …

High-Resolution Methods For Measuring The Thermal Expansion Coefficient Of Aerospace Materials, G. Wallace, W. Speer, J. Ogren, Omar S. Es-Said
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Works
Accurately predicting the coefficient of thermal expansion for many aerospace components is critical to ensure proper functionality on orbit where the temperature gradient across a spacecraft can vary from +300 degrees F to -450 degrees F. Under these conditions, the linear approximations generated by theoretical equations no longer hold true, and experimental methods are needed. Although several methods exist for measuring the coefficient of thermal expansion of materials, laser interferometry yields high-resolution results, and the technique is widely accepted in the scientific community.

Effect Of Viscoelasticity On Quality Factor Of Microcantilever Chemical Sensors: Optimal Coating Thickness For Minimum Limit Of Detection, F. Lochon, Isabelle Dufour, D. Rebière, U. Sampath, Stephen M. Heinrich, Fabien Josse
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Microcantilevers with polymer coatings hold great promise as resonant chemical sensors. It is known that the coated cantilever sensitivity increases with coating thickness; however, the drawback of increasing the coating thickness is the increase of the frequency noise and thus the deterioration of the sensor's limit of detection. In this paper, an analytical expression for the viscoelastic losses in the coating, hence the quality factor is established and is used to explain the observed increase of the frequency noise with the polymer thickness. This result is then used to demonstrate that an optimum coating thickness exists that minimise the limit …

Mechanism Of Current Collapse Removal In Field-Plated Nitride Hfets, Alexei Koudymov, V. Adivarahan, Jinwei Yang, Grigory Simin, Asif Khan
Faculty Publications
An experimental study of the mechanism of RF current collapse removal in high-power nitride-based HFETs is presented. The results show that the conductivity of the dielectric material under the field plate plays a crucial role in the current collapse removal. Identical geometry field plated HFETs differing only in the FP dielectric conductivity show varying degree of current collapse removal. Devices with semiconducting dielectric layers exhibit perfectly linear RF power - drain bias dependence with the output powers of 20 W/mm at 55 V drain bias with essentially no current collapse. A trapped charge discharging model is presented to explain the …

Damage-Induced Modeling Of Asphalt Mixtures Through Computational Micromechanics And Cohesive Zone Fracture, Yong-Rak Kim, D. H. Allen, D. N. Little
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Faculty Publications
This paper presents a computational micromechanics modeling approach to predict damage-induced mechanical response of asphalt mixtures. Heterogeneous geometric characteristics and inelastic mechanical behavior were taken into account by introducing finite element modeling techniques and a viscoelastic material model. The modeling also includes interface fracture to represent crack growth and damage evolution. The interface fracture is modeled by using a micromechanical nonlinear viscoelastic cohesive-zone constitutive relation. Fundamental material properties and fracture characteristics were measured from simple laboratory tests and then incorporated into the model to predict rate-dependent viscoelastic damage behavior of the asphalt mixture. Simulation results demonstrate that each model parameter …

Dynamic Voltage Scaling Techniques For Power Efficient Video Decoding, Ben Lee, Eriko Nurvitadhi, Reshma Dixit, Chansu Yu, Myungchul Kim
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper presents a comparison of power-aware video decoding techniques that utilize dynamic voltage scaling (DVS). These techniques reduce the power consumption of a processor by exploiting high frame variability within a video stream. This is done through scaling of the voltage and frequency of the processor during the video decoding process. However, DVS causes frame deadline misses due to inaccuracies in decoding time predictions and granularity of processor settings used. Four techniques were simulated and compared in terms of power consumption, accuracy, and deadline misses. In addition, this paper proposes the frame-data computation aware (FDCA) technique, which is …

Design Of Multistep Aging Treatments Of 2099 (C458) Al-Li Alloy, M. Romios, R. Tiraschi, C. Parrish, H. W. Babel, J. Ogren, Omar S. Es-Said
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Works
Multistep artificial aging treatments coupled with various natural aging times for aluminum lithium 2099 alloy (previously called C458) are discussed to obtain mechanical tensile properties in the T6 condition that match those in the T861 condition, having a yield strength in the range of 414-490 MPa (60-71 ksi), an ultimate strength in the range of 496-538 MPa (72-78 ksi), and 10-13% elongation. Yield and ultimate tensile strengths from 90-100% of the strength of the as-received material (in the T861 condition) were obtained. The highest tensile strengths were consistently obtained with two-step, low-to-high temperature artificial aging treatments consisting of a first …
Numerical Integration Strategy For Generating Root Migration Diagrams, Deepak H. Panduranga
Numerical Integration Strategy For Generating Root Migration Diagrams, Deepak H. Panduranga
Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Evans root locus is a graphical method for analyzing or designing the stability and performance of a single channel closed-loop system. The method consists of plotting the locus of closed-loop characteristic equation roots in the complex plane as the loop gain parameter is varied over a wide range of values. Several methods for plotting the root locus graph exist and can be mainly classified into two types: analytical methods and numerical methods. The most common numerical method is based on polynomial factoring or root solving. A less common, alternative method for generating the root locus graph is based on numerical …

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
Introduction
The success of vascular stents in the restoration of blood flow is limited by restenosis. Recent data generated from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models suggest that the vascular geometry created by an implanted stent causes local alterations in wall shear stress (WSS) that are associated with neointimal hyperplasia (NH). Foreshortening is a potential limitation of stent design that may affect stent performance and the rate of restenosis. The angle created between axially aligned stent struts and the principal direction of blood flow varies with the degree to which the stent foreshortens after implantation.

Support For A Delivery Train Based Material Handling Mechanism, Sai P. Boyedapu
Support For A Delivery Train Based Material Handling Mechanism, Sai P. Boyedapu
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Modeling a delivery train system is more challenging than traditional forklift systems as the delivery train model consists of a tugger, cart and a controller that combine to deliver materials within a manufacturing plant. Also, the decision logic for selection of carts and tuggers, joining of loads to particular delivery trains is more complicated than forklift systems. Simulation software such as Arena, Automod and Flexsim do not provide direct support for modeling delivery train systems.
In this thesis, an object-oriented, platform and language independent model of a delivery train was designed. The model was then implemented as an extension to …
Ozone Concentration In An Atmospheric Pressure Air Plasma Jet, Srinivas Reddy Suddala
Ozone Concentration In An Atmospheric Pressure Air Plasma Jet, Srinivas Reddy Suddala
Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations
A stable micro-plasma jet in air was generated from a direct current discharge between two molybdenum electrodes (0.25 mm thick) that were separated by an alumina insulator of the same thickness. The after-glow plasma jet was generated by blowing air through the space between the electrodes. A change from laminar to turbulent flow was observed at a gas flow rate of 140 ml/min. The length of the plasma jet increased with flow rate in the laminar mode to approximately 15 mm and decreased in the turbulent mode.
Increasing the gas flow rate up to 200 ml/min at a constant discharge …

Addressing Our Global Water Future, Center For Strategic And International Studies (Csis), Sandia National Laboratories
United States Department of Energy: Publications
This White Paper addresses the growing global challenges of dealing with the devastating effects of increasing water scarcity and declining water quality. Across the planet, in developing and developed regions alike, poor governance and mismanagement of natural resources coupled with rising population growth, increasing urbanization, and economic development have led to a growing imbalance between water supply and demand. This imbalance is reaching crisis proportions in many regions. It will have even more significant consequences for economic development, stability and security unless the there is a more dramatic and urgent international response. Several international forums have arisen to address just …
