Design And Development Of Poly -(3 -Hexylthiophene) Field Effect Transistors, Fengliang Xue Oct 2005

Design And Development Of Poly -(3 -Hexylthiophene) Field Effect Transistors, Fengliang Xue

Doctoral Dissertations

Organic field effect transistors (OFETs) with poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) as the active layer are developed and studied. The device characteristics are significantly affected by source/drain contact resistance, and P3HT-SiO 2 interface and the traps. These results are verified by the numerical device simulations. The temperature dependence of device mobility is studied, which indicates that the carrier transport is either heat-assisted or heat-limited at different temperature ranges. The on/off ratio and threshold voltage are found to be dependent on the temperature. Hysteresis effect due to gate electric stress is investigated. The silanol groups present at the SiO2 surface are thought to be …

A Fitness Function For Modular Evolutionary Testing Of Object-Oriented Programs, Yoonsik Cheon, Kim Myoung Oct 2005

A Fitness Function For Modular Evolutionary Testing Of Object-Oriented Programs, Yoonsik Cheon, Kim Myoung

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

We show that encapsulation of states in object-oriented programs hinders the search for test data using evolutionary testing. In a well-designed object-oriented program the encapsulated or hidden state is accessible only through exported or public methods. As client code is oblivious to the internal state of a server object, no guidance is available to test the client code using evolutionary testing. In particular, it is difficult to determine the fitness or goodness of test data, as it may depend on the hidden internal state. However, evolutionary testing is a promising new approach whose effectiveness has been shown by several researchers. …

Quantum Versions Of K-Csp Algorithms: A First Step Towards Quantum Algorithms For Interval-Related Constraint Satisfaction Problems, Evgeny Dantsin, Alexander Wolpert, Vladik Kreinovich Oct 2005

Quantum Versions Of K-Csp Algorithms: A First Step Towards Quantum Algorithms For Interval-Related Constraint Satisfaction Problems, Evgeny Dantsin, Alexander Wolpert, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many industrial engineering problems, we must select a design, select parameters of a process, or, in general, make a decision. Informally, this decision must be optimal, the best for the users. In traditional operations research, we assume that we know the objective function f(x) whose values describe the consequence of a decision x for the user. Optimization of well-defined functions is what started calculus in the first place: once we know the objective function f(x), we can use differentiation to find its maximum, e.g., as the point x at which the derivative of f with respect to x is …

Decision Making Beyond Arrow's "Impossibility Theorem", With The Analysis Of Effects Of Collusion And Mutual Attraction, Hung T. Nguyen, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Oct 2005

Decision Making Beyond Arrow's "Impossibility Theorem", With The Analysis Of Effects Of Collusion And Mutual Attraction, Hung T. Nguyen, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In 1951, K. J. Arrow proved that, under certain assumptions, it is impossible to have group decision making rules which satisfy reasonable conditions like symmetry. This Impossibility Theorem is often cited as a proof that reasonable group decision making is impossible.

We start our paper by remarking that Arrow's result only covers the situations when the only information we have about individual preferences is their binary preferences between the alternatives. If we follow the main ideas of modern decision making and game theory and also collect information about the preferences between lotteries (i.e., collect the utility values of different alternatives), …

Effect Of Sound Cue Frequency Filters On Front/Back Localization Performance For Three-Dimensional Verbal And Non-Verbal Warnings, Angelica A. Hernandez Oct 2005

Effect Of Sound Cue Frequency Filters On Front/Back Localization Performance For Three-Dimensional Verbal And Non-Verbal Warnings, Angelica A. Hernandez

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

In aviation, as technology becomes more advanced and more demands are placed on the human operator, warnings have become an important part of display design. Although warnings have made a significant contribution to safety, problems still plague their design. Recent technological advances have been able to give sounds and warnings a three-dimensional quality (3D). This technology enables a person to perceive sound from any direction around the listener without having the sound physically come from that direction. Three-dimensional sounds have been shown to improve target acquisition and collision avoidance in flight (Oving & Bronkhorst, 1999), and may have other future …

Application Of Polyelectrolyte Layer-By-Layer Nano-Assembly For Surface Modification, Encapsulation And Controlled Release, Nikhil Anil Pargaonkar Oct 2005

Application Of Polyelectrolyte Layer-By-Layer Nano-Assembly For Surface Modification, Encapsulation And Controlled Release, Nikhil Anil Pargaonkar

Doctoral Dissertations

In this study, we applied the traditional Electrostatic layer-by-layer (ELBL) assembly procedure to fabricate nanothin films over flat surfaces, and modify particle surfaces to influence the drug particle size, and drug release. The ELBL assembly has previously been applied to fabricate multilayer nano-scale thin films, but its ability to instantaneously influencing particle size is unique. Other unique observations such as influence on drug release as a result of polymer complexation, and thermal changes occurring during layer fabrication are recorded.

The ELBL self-assembly process was applied to produce dexamethasone particles layered with various polyelectrolyte layer combinations. These combinations were further applied …

Partition-Based Interpolation For Color Filter Array Demosaicking And Super-Resolution Reconstruction, Min Shao, Kenneth E. Barner, Russell C. Hardie Oct 2005

Partition-Based Interpolation For Color Filter Array Demosaicking And Super-Resolution Reconstruction, Min Shao, Kenneth E. Barner, Russell C. Hardie

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A class of partition-based interpolators that addresses a variety of image interpolation applications are proposed. The proposed interpolators first partition an image into a finite set of partitions that capture local image structures. Missing high resolution pixels are then obtained through linear operations on neighboring pixels that exploit the captured image structure. By exploiting the local image structure, the proposed algorithm produces excellent performance on both edge and uniform regions. The presented results demonstrate that partition-based interpolation yields results superior to traditional and advanced algorithms in the applications of color filter array (CFA) demosaicking and super-resolution reconstruction.

Use Of Ultra-Lightweight Geofoam To Reduce Stresses In Highway Culvert Extensions, Liecheng Sun, Tommy C. Hopkins, Tony L. Beckham Oct 2005

Use Of Ultra-Lightweight Geofoam To Reduce Stresses In Highway Culvert Extensions, Liecheng Sun, Tommy C. Hopkins, Tony L. Beckham

Kentucky Transportation Center Research Report

Culvert extension under highway embankment construction is a regular and important practice when roadway widening occurs. At some existing sites, concrete thickness and reinforcing steel of culvert tops and walls were stepped-down in sections of the culvert under the embankment slopes. The part of the culvert positioned under the embankment slopes was constructed weaker because the stresses under the portions of the slopes are much less than the stresses acting on the culvert section located under the main portion of the embankment. When additional fill is placed over the culvert due to roadway widening, much greater stresses are imposed on …

Terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism (T-RFLP) analysis of 16S rRNA genes was used to investigate the reproducibility and stability in the bacterial community structure of laboratory-scale sequencing batch bioreactors (SBR) and to assess the impact of solids retention time (SRT) on bacterial diversity. Two experiments were performed. In each experiment two sets of replicate SBRs were operated for a periods of three times the SRT. One set was operated at an SRT of 2 days and another set was operated at an SRT of 8 days. Samples for T-RFLP analysis were collected from the two sets of replicate reactors. HhaI, …

Probalistic Analysis Of Highway Bridge Traffic Loading, Colin C. Caprani Oct 2005

Probalistic Analysis Of Highway Bridge Traffic Loading, Colin C. Caprani

Other resources

Many bridges of the world’s highway networks have been in service for decades and are subject to escalating volumes of traffic. Consequently, there is a growing need for the rehabilitation or replacement of bridges due to deterioration and increased loading. The assessment of the strength of the existing bridge is relatively well understood, whereas the traffic loading it is subject to, is not as well understood. Accurate assessment of the loading to which bridges may be subject, can result in significant savings for the highway maintenance budgets internationally. In recent years, a general approach has emerged in the research literature: …

Development Of Palladium Nanowires, Chuanding Cheng Oct 2005

Development Of Palladium Nanowires, Chuanding Cheng

Doctoral Dissertations

Inherent limitations of traditional lithography have prompted the search for means of achieving self-assembly of nano-scale structures and networks for the next generation of electronic and photonic devices. The nanowire, the basic building block of a nanocircuit, has recently become the focus of intense research. Reports on nanowire synthesis and assembly have appeared in the scientific literature, which include Vapor-Liquid-Solid mechanism, template-based electrochemical fabrication, solvothermal or wet chemistry, and assembly by fluid alignment or microchannel networks. An ideal approach for practical application of nanowires would circumvent technical and economic constraints of templating. Here we report on the self-assembly of highly-ordered …

Evaluation Of Microwave Reflection Properties Of Cyclically Soaked Mortar Based On A Semiempirical Electromagnetic Model, Shanup Peer, K. E. Kurtis, R. Zoughi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Detection of chloride ingress and evaluation of its distribution and temporal movement in reinforced concrete structures is an important practical issue. Steel reinforcing bars embedded in good quality concrete are normally protected from corrosion. However, the presence of a sufficient concentration of free chloride ions in the region of the reinforcing steel can initiate the process of corrosion. Therefore, it is important to be able to detect ingress of chloride ions and their distribution in cement-based materials. Moreover, it is important to obtain this information nondestructively. In recent years, near-field microwave nondestructive evaluation methods, using open-ended rectangular waveguide probes, have …

Using Scenario-Based Training To Teach Single Pilot Resource Management Related To The Use Of The Brs Parachute, Shayna Danielle Strally

Master's Theses - Daytona Beach

The Ballistic Recovery System is an emergency parachute for single engine aircraft which, when released, lowers the aircraft to the ground to prevent terrain collision. This study sought to examine the effects of scenario-based training on pilot’s use of the BRS. Of particular interest was the point at which the pilot decides to deploy the BRS. Single pilot resource management was included as a training objective, as it encompasses relevant cognitive skills such as decision making and situational awareness. The results showed participants in the scenario-based training condition performed significantly better than participants in a traditional training condition on several …

Fourier Transform Analysis Of Terahertz Radiation, Chikaodira N. Okpo Oct 2005

Fourier Transform Analysis Of Terahertz Radiation, Chikaodira N. Okpo

Electrical & Computer Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Advances in terahertz radiation (T-rays) technology have great promise in various technological areas ranging from medical technology, imaging technology and accelerator technology. At Thomas Jefferson Laboratory, the Free Electron Laser division (FEL) produces very powerful beam of laser light by accelerating electrons in bunches along a beamline. This laser light absorbs and releases energy at various wavelengths. The new FEL upgrade led to the production of very bright terahertz (THz) radiation with an average power of 1 00watts which is about 100,000 times brighter than those produced elsewhere. These T-rays have very significant applications in the Laboratory. The most significant …

Gauss-Hermite Integration For Reliability Calculation And Sensitivity Analysis, Nilesh K. Borade Oct 2005

Gauss-Hermite Integration For Reliability Calculation And Sensitivity Analysis, Nilesh K. Borade

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

In the real world, many applications are subjected to uncertainty. A simple illustration would be a structure like a bridge where magnitude and the speed of the loads acting on it are continuously changing. Therefore it becomes essential to study this stochastic or random nature. The thrust of this research is to develop an efficient reliability and sensitivity technique based on stochastic response surfaces (polynomial chaos expansions) constructed using Gauss-Hermite integration. The focus is on calculating the uncertainty propagation using less number of function evaluations since the stochastic response surface needs to be reconstructed at each design cycle. Using the …

Contemporary-Classical Sequential Loop Design With Parameter Uncertainty, Donghyuk Jeong Oct 2005

Contemporary-Classical Sequential Loop Design With Parameter Uncertainty, Donghyuk Jeong

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Standard sequential loop closure design based on Evans root migration concepts is a well accepted, insightful and effective technique for meeting nominal performance objectives and traditional gain-phase stability margin requirements. Unfortunately, assessment of closed-loop variations resulting from parameter error is a post-process, implying an undesirable design-assess-redesign procedure is necessary if variations are found unacceptable. Further, the modem parameter uncertainty assessment framework is often inconsistent, both quantitatively and qualitatively, with the redesign task. Specifically, the parameter uncertainty assessment variables are not readily apparent in the sequential loop design framework, and these variables provide little guidance for the redesign strategy. Therefore, enhancing …

Validation Of Finite Element Beam Models, Pavan R. Madhineni Oct 2005

Validation Of Finite Element Beam Models, Pavan R. Madhineni

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Finite Element (FE) methods these days are becoming very popular to predict the responses of structures in industries, such as the aerospace and automobile industries. When there is a new design or modification of an existing design, the product must be tested to fulfill the criterion projected by the industry or external agencies before it can be launched. The product must be checked for each and every aspect, and every minute detail of each of the external forces. Hence, it becomes very important to carry out the model validation on the product.

This thesis describes validation of finite element (FE) …

Shape And Size Sensitivity Analysis Of Geometrically Nonlinear Laminated Composite Plates, Nitin R. Mane Oct 2005

Shape And Size Sensitivity Analysis Of Geometrically Nonlinear Laminated Composite Plates, Nitin R. Mane

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Since major applications of composite laminates involve large deformation, the nonlinear strain-displacement relation in the Von Karman sense has been incorporated here with the first order shear deformation to study bending analysis of composite laminated panels. The finite element model constructed here is an extension of the MIN3 element which is a displacement based element developed by Hughes and Tessler. The element avoids shear locking in the thin bending regime and achieves computational efficiency. The resultant nonlinear matrix equation is solved for analysis of composite panels by using the Newton-Raphson iterative method. Based upon the nonlinear matrix equation, the shape …

Sonic Boom Prediction Using Euler/Full Potential Methodology, Isik Ali Ozcer Oct 2005

Sonic Boom Prediction Using Euler/Full Potential Methodology, Isik Ali Ozcer

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Sonic Booms of two different bodies, a double cone configuration and a modified F-SE aircraft, are predicted using Euler solvers for the near field, and a Full Potential Propagation method for the far field. The problem is considered inviscid since viscous effects in high Reynolds number flows are negligible in Sonic Boom propagation. To enhance the accuracy of the predictions, elaborate shock fitting and grid adaptation routines are developed that can handle complicated shock topologies. The far field propagation code using the full potential equation is the first three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics code in literature that can march the solution …

New Methodology For Robust Control System Design And Analysis For Single Parameter Uncertain Systems, Charles J. Player Oct 2005

New Methodology For Robust Control System Design And Analysis For Single Parameter Uncertain Systems, Charles J. Player

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Due to the conservative nature of the standard singular value robustness tests there is ambiguity in the results that they provide. The tests only establish a sufficient condition and therefore provide little insight to the stability robustness of a system that fails the test. However, for a single parameter uncertain system that is modeled using structured uncertainty, an Evans root locus can be derived that shows how system closed-loop poles change with the magnitude of the single parameter uncertainty. This technique provides clear stability robustness insight. Further, another Evans root locus can be derived that shows how system closed-loop zeros …
