Power Enhancement Of An Actively Controlled Battery/Ultracapacitor Hybrid, Lijun Gao, Roger A. Dougal, Shengyi Liu Jan 2005

Power Enhancement Of An Actively Controlled Battery/Ultracapacitor Hybrid, Lijun Gao, Roger A. Dougal, Shengyi Liu

Faculty Publications

An actively controlled battery/ultracapacitor hybrid has broad applications in pulse-operated power systems. A converter is used to actively control the power flow from a battery, to couple the battery to an ultracapacitor for power enhancement, and to deliver the power to a load efficiently. The experimental and simulation results show that the hybrid can achieve much greater specific power while reducing battery current and its internal loss. A specific example of the hybrid built from two size 18650 lithium-ion cells and two 100-F ultracapacitors achieved a peak power of 132 W which is a three-times improvement in peak power compared …

The Stability And Oxidation Resistance Of Iron- And Cobalt-Based Magnetic Nanoparticle Fluids Fabricated By Inert-Gas Condensation, Nguyen H. Hai, Raymond Lemoine, Shaina Remboldt, Michelle A. Strand, Steve Wignall, Jeffrey E. Shield, Diandra Leslie-Pelecky

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications

Magnetic nanoparticle fluids have numerous biomedical applications, including magnetic imaging, drug delivery, and hyperthermia treatment for cancer. Ideal magnetic nanoparticle fluids have well-separated, biocompatible nanoparticles with a small size distribution that form a stable colloid. We have combined inert-gas condensation, which produces nanoparticles with low polydispersity, with deposition directly into a surfactant-laden fluid to prevent agglomeration. Iron, cobalt, and iron-nitride nanoparticle fluids fabricated using inert-gas condensation have with mean particle sizes from 5-50 nm and remain stable over long periods of time. Iron and cobalt nanoparticles oxidize on exposure to air, with oxidation rates dependent on surfactant type and concentration. …

Multiscale Phenomena In Bruggeman Composites, Ralph Skomski, Jiangyu Li, Jian Zhou, David J. Sellmyer

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications

Mechanical, magnetic, and transport properties of arbitrary inhomogeneous composites are investigated by a Bruggeman-type mean-field approach. The theory yields materials parameters as functions of the volume fractions, geometries, and materials constants of the phases. Each system is described by a single response parameter g, which is equal to the percolation threshold of the composite. For macroscopic systems, the approach yields very simple expressions, but nanoscale and multiferroic effects yield relatively complicated corrections to g. In the respective cases, the parameter g depends on the length scale of the composite and has the character of a combination of magnetic, electric, and …

Decision Support For The Career Field Selection Process At The Us Air Force Academy, Andrew P. Armacost, James K. Lowe

United States Air Force: Publications

Each year, the US Air Force Academy graduates nearly 1000 young men and women. To support the decision of which cadets will be classified into which career fields, we describe a linear programming formulation with appealing computational properties that enable it as the core of a decision support tool. We explore methods for measuring and balancing cadets' class standing, Air Force career field requirements, and cadets' career field preferences in the context of this model. Our computational experiments demonstrate the improvement of this method over previous classification approaches, yielding more than 10% increase in the number of cadets assigned to …

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Strained-layer GaAs and strained-superlattice GaAs photocathodes are used at Jefferson Laboratory to create high average current beams of highly spin-polarized electrons. High electron yield, or quantum efficiency (QE), is obtained only when the photocathode surface is atomically clean. For years, exposure to atomic hydrogen or deuterium has been the photocathode cleaning technique employed at Jefferson Laboratory. This work demonstrates that atomic hydrogen cleaning is not necessary when precautions are taken to ensure that clean photocathode material from the vendor is not inadvertently dirtied while samples are prepared for installation inside photoemission guns. Moreover, this work demonstrates that QE and beam …

Implications Of Invasion By Juniperus Virginiana On Small Mammals In The Southern Great Plains, Valerie J. Horncastle, Eric C. Hellgren, Paul M. Mayer, Amy C. Ganguli, David M. Engle, David M. Leslie, Jr.

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Changes in landscape cover in the Great Plains are resulting from the range expansion and invasion of eastern red cedar (Juniperus virginiana). By altering the landscape and local vegetation, red cedar is changing the structure and function of habitat for small mammals. We examined effects of invasion by eastern red cedar on small mammals in 3 plant communities (tallgrass prairie, old field, and cross-timbers forest) in the cross-timbers ecoregion in Oklahoma. We sampled small mammals seasonally from May 2001 to August 2002 by using Sherman live traps and mark–recapture techniques on 3.24-ha, 450-trap grids in each plant community. …

Radius Of Gyration Of Polystyrene Combs And Centipedes In A Θ Solvent, Ken Terao, Brandon S. Farmer, Yo Nakamura, Hermis Iatrou, Kunlun Hong, Jimmy W. Mays Jan 2005

Radius Of Gyration Of Polystyrene Combs And Centipedes In A Θ Solvent, Ken Terao, Brandon S. Farmer, Yo Nakamura, Hermis Iatrou, Kunlun Hong, Jimmy W. Mays

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The molecular weight dependence of the radii of gyration Rg in a Θ solvent (trans-decalin) of one regular branched comb and three regular centipede polystyrenes was studied using a gel permeation chromatography system equipped with a two-angle light scattering detector and a refractive index detector. Rg in trans-decalin for each sample of particular molecular weight was about 25% smaller than that in a good solvent (tetrahydrofuran, THF). On the other hand, they are 20-40% larger than the theoretical values from the Gaussian chain model. This difference can be explained with the worm-like comb model developed by Nakamura et …

Kinetic Desorption And Sorption Of U(Vi) During Reactive Transport In A Contaminated Hanford Sediment, Nikolla P. Qafoku, John M. Zachara, Chongxuan Liu, Paul Gassman, Odeta Qafoku, Steve Smith Jan 2005

Kinetic Desorption And Sorption Of U(Vi) During Reactive Transport In A Contaminated Hanford Sediment, Nikolla P. Qafoku, John M. Zachara, Chongxuan Liu, Paul Gassman, Odeta Qafoku, Steve Smith

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Column experiments were conducted to investigate U(VI) desorption and sorption kinetics in a sand-textured, U(VI)- contaminated (22.7 µmol kg-1) capillary fringe sediment from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford site. Saturated column experiments were performed under mildly alkaline conditions representative of the Hanford site where uranyl-carbonate and calcium-uranyl-carbonate complexes dominate aqueous speciation. A U(VI)-free solution was used to study contaminant U(VI) desorption in columns where different flow rates were applied. Sorbed, contaminant U(VI) was partially labile (11.8%), and extended leaching times and water volumes were required for complete desorption of the labile fraction. Uranium- (VI) sorption was …

Cryogenic Laser Induced U(Vi) Fluorescence Studies Of A U(Vi) Substituted Natural Calcite: Implications To U(Vi) Speciation In Contaminated Hanford Sediments, Zheming Wang, John M. Zachara, James Mckinley, Steven Smith

United States Department of Energy: Publications

Time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (TRLFS) and imaging spectromicroscopy (TRLFISM) were used to examine the chemical speciation of uranyl in contaminated subsurface sediments from the U.S. Department of Energy (U.S. DOE) Hanford Site, Washington. Spectroscopic measurements for contaminant U(VI) were compared to those from a natural, uranyl-bearing calcite (NUC) that had been found via X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) to include uranyl in the same coordination environment as calcium. Spectral deconvolution of TRLFS measurements on the NUC revealed the unexpected presence of two distinct chemical environments consistent with published spectra of U(VI)-substituted synthetic calcite and aragonite. Apparently, some U(VI) substitution sites in …

Impact Of Highly Basic Solutions On Sorption Of Cs+ To Subsurface Sediments From The Hanford Site, Usa, C.C. Ainsworth, John M. Zachara, K. Wagnon, S. Mckinley, Chongxuan Liu, Steven Smith, H.T. Schaef, Paul Gassman Jan 2005

Impact Of Highly Basic Solutions On Sorption Of Cs+ To Subsurface Sediments From The Hanford Site, Usa, C.C. Ainsworth, John M. Zachara, K. Wagnon, S. Mckinley, Chongxuan Liu, Steven Smith, H.T. Schaef, Paul Gassman

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The effect of caustic NaNO3 solutions on the sorption of 137Cs to a Hanford site micaceous subsurface sediment was investigated as a function of base exposure time (up to 168 d), temperature (10°C or 50°C), and NaOH concentration (0.1 mol/L to 3 mol/L). At 10°C and 0.1 M NaOH, the slow evolution of [Al]aq was in stark contrast to the rapid increase and subsequent loss of [Al]aq observed at 50°C (regardless of base concentration). Exposure to 0.1 M NaOH at 10°C for up to 168 d exhibited little if any measurable effect on sediment mineralogy, Cs …

The goal of the Malaria Vaccine Program at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR) is to develop a licensed multi-antigen, multi-stage vaccine against Plasmodium falciparum able to prevent all symptomatic manifestations of malaria by preventing parasitemia. A secondary goal is to limit disease in vaccinees that do develop malaria. Malaria prevention will be achieved by inducing humoral and cellular immunity against the pre-erythrocytic circumsporozoite protein (CSP) and the liver stage antigen-1 (LSA-1). The strategy to limit disease will target immune responses against one or more blood stage antigens, merozoite surface protein-1 (MSP-1) and apical merozoite antigen-1 (AMA-1). The …

Magneto-Optical Spectra Of Closely Spaced Magnetite Nanoparticles, Damon Allen Smith, Yu A. Barnakov, B L. Scott, S A. White, Kevin L. Stokes Jan 2005

Magneto-Optical Spectra Of Closely Spaced Magnetite Nanoparticles, Damon Allen Smith, Yu A. Barnakov, B L. Scott, S A. White, Kevin L. Stokes

Physics Faculty Publications

The Faraday rotation spectrum of composites containing magnetite nanoparticles is found to be dependent on the interparticle spacing of the constituent nanoparticles. The composite materials are prepared by combining chemically synthesized Fe

3O4 smagnetited nanoparticles s8-nm diameterd and polysmethylmethacrylated . Composites are made containing a range of nanoparticle concentrations. The peak of the main spectral feature depends on nanoparticle concentration; this peak is observed to shift from approximately 470 nm for sdilute compositesd to 540 nm concentrated . We present a theory based on the discrete-dipole approximation which accounts for

optical coupling between magnetite particles. Qualitative correlations between theoretical calculations …

A Methodology For Model Selection In Engineering Design, Rajesh Radhakrishnan, Daniel A. Mcadams Jan 2005

A Methodology For Model Selection In Engineering Design, Rajesh Radhakrishnan, Daniel A. Mcadams

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Engineering design consists of a series of stages during which a number of decisions need to be made by the designer. Since the information available to the designer is limited during initial design stages, to make these decisions and be able to proceed further in the design process, the designer needs to depict the nature, visualize the form, and predict the behavior of the product through the use of aids called models. These models guide these decisions; therefore, the designer needs to ensure the downstream validity of these decisions by constructing models with sufficient accuracy and resolution. Because higher quality …

Rice bran oil was extracted using environmentally-friendly supercritical carbon dioxide at varying conditions. Experimental treatments included pressure (27.6, 41.4 and 55.2 MPa), temperature (40 and 60 oC) and flow rates (25, 45 and 65 g/min) of supercritical carbon dioxide. Extracts collected at different time intervals during 4-hour extraction runs in a 3-L extractor were analyzed for oil yield and antioxidants. Normal-phase HPLC was used for analyzing the extract for important antioxidant compounds of oryzanol, tocopherols, tocotrienols. Silica rich rice hull ash adsorbent was also incorporated in combined extraction-adsorption experiments under similar supercritical fluid conditions. Supercritical extraction yields of rice bran …

Optimal Control Of A Class Of One-Dimensional Nonlinear Distributed Parameter Systems With Discrete Actuators, Radhakant Padhi, S. N. Balakrishnan Jan 2005

Optimal Control Of A Class Of One-Dimensional Nonlinear Distributed Parameter Systems With Discrete Actuators, Radhakant Padhi, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Combining the principles of dynamic inversion and optimization theory, a new approach is presented for stable control of a class of one-dimensional nonlinear distributed parameter systems with a finite number of actuators in the spatial domain. Unlike the existing ''approximate-then-design'' and ''design-then-approximate'' techniques, this approach does not use any approximation either of the system dynamics or of the resulting controller. The formulation has more practical significance because one can implement a set of discrete controllers with relative ease. To demonstrate the potential of the proposed technique, a real-life temperature control problem for a heat transfer application is solved through simulations. …

Stochastic Optimal Control With Neural Networks And Application To A Retailer Inventory Problem, Zhongwu Huang, Xiaohua Wang, S. N. Balakrishnan Jan 2005

Stochastic Optimal Control With Neural Networks And Application To A Retailer Inventory Problem, Zhongwu Huang, Xiaohua Wang, S. N. Balakrishnan

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Overwhelming computational requirements of classical dynamic programming algorithms render them inapplicable to most practical stochastic problems. To overcome this problem a neural network based Dynamic Programming (DP) approach is described in this study. The cost function which is critical in a dynamic programming formulation is approximated by a neural network according to some designed weight-update rule based on Temporal Difference(TD)learning. A Lyapunov based theory is developed to guarantee an upper error bound between the output of the cost neural network and the true cost. We illustrate this approach through a retailer inventory problem.

Unsteady Tip Leakage, Bow Shock, Igv Wake Interaction In A Compressor, Xuedong Zhou, J. Mitch Wolff Jan 2005

Unsteady Tip Leakage, Bow Shock, Igv Wake Interaction In A Compressor, Xuedong Zhou, J. Mitch Wolff

Mechanical and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications

Unsteady aerodynamic analysis of Inlet Guide Vane (IGV)/rotor interaction is conducted with a commercial CFD solver, STAR-CD. 12% and 26% IGV axial chord IGV/Rotor spacing configurations were examined for 100% corrected speed at choke, peak efficiency and near stall conditions to investigate bow shock/tip leakage interaction within blade rows. Comparison with IGV surface unsteady pressure experimental data indicates good agreement at the IGV trailing edge across the span for both spacing configurations; therefore, validating the modeling of the high speed, highly loaded transonic compressor. The strongest effect on the tip clearance flow physics was caused by decreasing the axial spacing. …
