Introducing Pvspitch: A Pitch Tracking Opcode For Csound, Alan O'Cinneide Jan 2005

Introducing Pvspitch: A Pitch Tracking Opcode For Csound, Alan O'Cinneide

Conference papers

An accurate pitch tracker has many useful applications, whether for creating interactive electroacoustic compositions, music transcription, ethnomusicological research and numerous others. Designed for the Csound sound synthesis and signal processing language, PVSPITCH is an opcode that can be utilised for such purposes. The opcode performs a mathemathical analysis upon Csound's phase vocoder data streams and from this examination, ascertains what it determines to be the signal's pitch. The algorithm handles well many types of signals, including those missing various harmonics, even a fundamental, and also signals with inharmonic partials. The only signal restriction are that it be single voiced, strongly …

Generalised Prior Subspace Analysis For Polyphonic Pitch Transcription, Derry Fitzgerald, Matt Cranitch, Eugene Coyle Jan 2005

Generalised Prior Subspace Analysis For Polyphonic Pitch Transcription, Derry Fitzgerald, Matt Cranitch, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

A reformulation of Prior Subspace Analysis (PSA) is presented, which restates the problem as that of fitting an undercomplete signal dictionary to a spectrogram. Further, a generalization of PSA is derived which allows the transcription of polyphonic pitched instruments. This involves the translation of a single frequency prior subspace of a note to approximate other notes, overcoming the problem of needing a separate basis function for each note played by an instrument. Examples are then demonstrated which show the utility of the generalised PSA algorithm for the purposes of polyphonic pitch transcription.

Development Of A Computer-Based Violin Teaching Aid: Vitool, Jane Charles, Derry Fitzgerald, Eugene Coyle Jan 2005

Development Of A Computer-Based Violin Teaching Aid: Vitool, Jane Charles, Derry Fitzgerald, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

This paper considers the development of a violin teaching aid, called ViTool, which is based on violin pedagogy, sound analysis, and comparison of beginner and good player recordings. It is a computer based teaching aid and will ultimately consist of at least four task dependent tools. Typical beginner faults have been identified and features, that best describe them for classification purposes, are considered. The ViTool is not intended as a replacement or electronic teacher, but as a teaching aid. Presently, it seems that no such violin learning aid or tool exists and an opportunity exists for the development of such …

Single Channel Source Separation Using Short-Time Independent Component Analysis, Dan Barry, Derry Fitzgerald, Eugene Coyle Jan 2005

Single Channel Source Separation Using Short-Time Independent Component Analysis, Dan Barry, Derry Fitzgerald, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

In this paper we develop a method for the sound source separation of single channel mixtures using Independent Component Analysis within a time-frequency representation of the audio signal. We apply standard Independent Component Analysis techniques to contiguous magnitude frames of the short-time Fourier transform of the mixture. Provided that the amplitude envelopes of each source are sufficiently different, it can be seen that it is possible to recover the independent short-time power spectra of each source. A simple scoring scheme based on auditory scene analysis cues is then used to overcome the source ordering problem ultimately allowing each of the …

Microwave Permeability Of Co₂ Z Composites, Konstantin Rozanov, Marina Koledintseva, Z. W. Li, L. F. Chen Jan 2005

Microwave Permeability Of Co₂ Z Composites, Konstantin Rozanov, Marina Koledintseva, Z. W. Li, L. F. Chen

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

The microwave permittivity and permeability of Co2Z barium ferrite composite samples are measured as functions of frequency and volume fraction of the ferrite. Magnetostatic properties of the bulk ferrite are determined. This allows Snoek's law [J. L. Snoek, Physica 14, 204 (1948)] to be verified by comparing the microwave and magnetostatic Snoek's constants. The modification of Snoek's law for hexagonal ferrites suggested recently by Acher et al. [Phys. Rev. B 62, 11324 (2000)] is also verified. Acher's constant is found from microwave measurements to agree with the value calculated from the magnetostatic properties of bulk ferrite, but microwave and magnetostatic …

Laser Induced Fluorescence Photobleaching Anemometer For Microfluidic Devices, Guiren Wang Jan 2005

Laser Induced Fluorescence Photobleaching Anemometer For Microfluidic Devices, Guiren Wang

Faculty Publications

We have developed a novel, non-intrusive fluid velocity measurement method based on photobleaching of a fluorescent dye for microfluidic devices. The residence time of thefluorescent dye in a laser beam depends on the flow velocity and approximately corresponds to the decaying time of the photobleaching of the dye in the laser beam. The residence time is inversely proportional to the flow velocity. The fluorescence intensity increases with the flow velocity due to the decrease of the residence time. A calibration curve between fluorescence intensity and known flow velocity should be obtained first. The calibration relationship is then used to calculate …

The Effect Of Post-9/ 11 Security Requirements On Aviation Higher Education And Aviation Higher Education Student Attitudes Toward The United States, Richard G. Ham, Sr. Jan 2005

The Effect Of Post-9/ 11 Security Requirements On Aviation Higher Education And Aviation Higher Education Student Attitudes Toward The United States, Richard G. Ham, Sr.

Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the effect of security measures implemented as a result of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 on aviation higher education and how the measures affected aviation higher education students' attitudes toward the United States. The underlying premise of the study is that international persistence represents the ultimate indicator of economic and cultural effect on higher education while international student attitudes provide insight into possible causes of eroding international relationships that lead to terrorism. This is a sequential mixed methods study using a qualitative interview pilot study as the foundation, followed by a quantitative survey and ending …

Numerical Analysis Of Heat Transfer In Pulsating Turbulent Flow In A Pipe, Xuefeng Wang, Nengli Zhang Jan 2005

Numerical Analysis Of Heat Transfer In Pulsating Turbulent Flow In A Pipe, Xuefeng Wang, Nengli Zhang

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications

Convection heat transfer in pulsating turbulent flow with large velocity oscillating amplitudes in a pipe at constant wall temperature is numerically studied. A low-Reynolds-number (LRN) k–ε turbulent model is used in the turbulence modeling. The model analysis indicates that Womersley number is a very important parameter in the study of pulsating flow and heat transfer. Flow and heat transfer in a wide range of process parameters are investigated to reveal the velocity and temperature characteristics of the flow. The numerical calculation results show that in a pulsating turbulent flow there is an optimum Womersley number at which heat transfer is …

Advances In In-Situ Calibration Of Attitude And Doppler Sensors For Precision Oceanographic Submersible Navigation, James C. Kinsey Jan 2005

Advances In In-Situ Calibration Of Attitude And Doppler Sensors For Precision Oceanographic Submersible Navigation, James C. Kinsey

Link Foundation Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation Fellowship Reports

This paper reviews the development and experimental evaluation of three techniques for estimating the alignment matrix of Doppler sonars, which are commonly used for precision navigation of oceanographic submersibles, employing sensors commonly employed aboard these vehicles. Most previously reported methods addressed the problem of single degree of freedom alignment using bottom-lock Doppler sonar data and global positioning system (GPS) navigation data. This paper reviews three techniques for three degree of freedom calibration of attitude and Doppler sonar sensors, using sensor data available to vehicles at full ocean depth. The first technique provides a general linear least-square estimate of the alignment …

An Enhanced Dynamic Packet Buffer Management, Vinod Rajan, Yul Chu Jan 2005

An Enhanced Dynamic Packet Buffer Management, Vinod Rajan, Yul Chu

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A packet buffer for a protocol processor is a large shared memory space that holds incoming data packets in a computer network. This paper investigates four packet buffer management algorithms for a protocol processor including dynamic algorithm with different thresholds (DADT), which is proposed to reduce the packet loss ratio efficiently. The proposed algorithm takes the advantage of different packet sizes for each application by allocating buffer space for each queue proportionally. According to our simulation results, the DADT algorithm works well in reducing packet loss ratio compared to other three algorithms.

Acceleration Management: The Semiconductor Industry Confronts The 21st Century, Melissa M. Appleyard, C. N. Berglund, Craig Peterson, Richard W. Smith

Business Faculty Publications and Presentations

In the recent generations of semiconductor devices, the semiconductor industry has been accelerating towards the limits of the physical sciences. As a consequence, technology managers in that industry face seven major challenges, which will threaten progress: process, complexity, performance, power, density, productivity, and quality / reliability. We believe that confronting these challenges requires a new approach to technology management both within organizations and between organizations that form the backbone of the industry. We call this new approach Acceleration Management. Acceleration Management first requires that firms cultivate deep technical knowledge and inspire creative solutions to seemingly insoluble technical problems. The second …
