Performance Of A New Cfd Flow Solver Using A Hybrid Programming Paradigm, M. J. Berger, M. J. Aftosmis, D. D. Mashall, S. M. Murman

Aerospace Engineering

This paper presents several algorithmic innovations and a hybrid programming style that lead to highly scalable performance using shared memory for a new computational fluid dynamics flow solver. This hybrid model is then converted to a strict message-passing implementation, and performance results for the two are compared. Results show that using this hybrid approach our OpenMP implementation is actually marginally faster than the MPI version, with parallel speedups of up to 599 out of 640 using OpenMP and 486 with MPI.

A Freeway Safety Strategy For Advanced Proactive Traffic Management, Anurag Pande, Mohamed Abdel-Aty

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Reactive traffic management strategies such as incident detection are becoming less relevant with the advancement of mobile phone usage. Freeway management in the 21st century needs to shift focus toward proactive strategies that include anticipating incidents such as crashes. A simple approach to identify freeway locations with high probability of crashes through real-time traffic surveillance data is presented here. The crash and loop detector data for the study was collected from 36-mile corridor of Interstate-4 in Orlando, Florida. The analysis is based on simple (one covariate) logistic regression models developed under a matched study design. Individual traffic parameters obtained one …

Identifying Crash Propensity Using Specific Traffic Speed Conditions, Mohamed Abdel-Aty, Anurag Pande

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Introduction: In spite of recent advances in traffic surveillance technology and ever-growing concern over traffic safety, there have been very few research efforts establishing links between real-time traffic flow parameters and crash occurrence. This study aims at identifying patterns in the freeway loop detector data that potentially precede traffic crashes.

Method: The proposed solution essentially involves classification of traffic speed patterns emerging from the loop detector data. Historical crash and loop detector data from the Interstate-4 corridor in the Orlando metropolitan area were used for this study. Traffic speed data from sensors embedded in the pavement (i.e., loop …

Characterization Of Surface Topography Of Sand, Nazli Yesiller, James L. Hanson, Donald K. Cohen

Civil and Environmental Engineering

This study was conducted to investigate surface characteristics of sand particles. Surface topography of sand particles was determined in 3-D using a commercially available optical profiler. Measurements were made on areas that had side dimensions on the order of 0.1 mm at a lateral resolution of 0.3 μm and height resolution of less than 6 nm. The 3-D representation of a surface obtained using the measurement system is analyzed to determine 3-D as well as 2-D surface texture parameters. The parameters included amplitude, spacing, hybrid (amplitude and spacing), and functional (performance related) parameters. Tests were conducted on two silica sands: …

Synchroscalar: Initial Lessons In Power-Aware Design Of A Tile-Based Embedded Architecture, John Y. Oliver, Ravishankar Rao, Paul Sultana, Jedidiah Crandall, Erik Czernikowski, Leslie W. Jones, Iv, Dean Copsey, Diana Keen, Venkatesh Akella, Frederic T. Chong

Electrical Engineering

Embedded devices have hard performance targets and severe power and area constraints that depart significantly from our design intuitions derived from general-purpose microprocessor design. This paper describes our initial experiences in designing Synchroscalar, a tile-based embedded architecture targeted for multi-rate signal processing applications. We present a preliminary design of the Synchroscalar architecture and some design space exploration in the context of important signal processing kernels. In particular, we find that synchronous design and substantial global interconnect are desirable in the low-frequency, low-power domain. This global interconnect enables parallelization and reduces processor idle time, which are critical to energy efficient implementations …

Canal Flow Rate Measurement Guidelines – Itrc 2005: Hydroacoustic Meters, Charles M. Burt, Stuart Styles Jan 2005

Canal Flow Rate Measurement Guidelines – Itrc 2005: Hydroacoustic Meters, Charles M. Burt, Stuart Styles

BioResource and Agricultural Engineering

A Hydroacoustic flow meter provides remote velocity sampling and integrated flow measurement based on the physical principle called the Doppler shift. The sensors can either project a continuous or pulsed beam of acoustic signals at angles above the horizontal position of the sensor. Flow velocity is calculated by averaging the measured variations in sound frequency reflected back from particles in the water. Depth is measured with a ceramic-based pressure transducer integrally mounted in a surface mount velocity sensor and the device calculates the flow rate.

Adequacy Assessment Of The Irish Generation System Including Wind Capacity, William Carr Jan 2005

Adequacy Assessment Of The Irish Generation System Including Wind Capacity, William Carr

Masters

Adequacy assessment of generation capacity is a statistical measure of the ability of existing or planned generation plant to meet predicted levels of electrical demand. Complications arise in this calculation because at any point in time the exact level of capacity available is variable due to planned and forced outages. Planned outrages is a term used to describe the period during the year when a generation unit is required to be shut down for maintenance work to be carried out. The duration of this outrage is normally known and its timing can be chosen. Forced outages describe the random failure …

Immobilization Of A Catalytic Dna Molecular Beacon On Au For Pb(Ii) Detection, Carla B. Swearingen, Daryl P. Wernette, Donald M. Cropek, Yi Lu, Jonathan V. Sweedler, Paul W. Bohn Jan 2005

Immobilization Of A Catalytic Dna Molecular Beacon On Au For Pb(Ii) Detection, Carla B. Swearingen, Daryl P. Wernette, Donald M. Cropek, Yi Lu, Jonathan V. Sweedler, Paul W. Bohn

United States Army: Publications

A Pb(II)-specific DNAzyme fluorescent sensor has been modified with a thiol moiety in order to immobilize it on a Au surface. Self-assembly of the DNAzyme is accomplished by first adsorbing the single-thiolated enzyme strand (HS-17E-Dy) followed by adsorption of mercaptohexanol, which serves to displace any Au-N interactions and ensure that DNA is bound only through the Sheadgroup. The preformed self-assembled monolayer is then hybridized with the complementary fluorophorecontaining substrate strand (17DS-Fl). Upon reaction with Pb(II), the substrate strand is cleaved, releasing a fluorescent fragment for detection. Fluorescence intensity may be correlated with original Pb(II) concentration, and a linear calibration was …

United States Army: Publications

Botulinum neurotoxins (BoNTs) are the most potent of the known biological toxins, and consequently are listed as category A biowarfare agents. Currently, the only treatments against BoNTs include preventative antitoxins and long-term supportive care. Consequently, there is an urgent need for therapeutics to counter these enzymes––post exposure. In a previous study, we identified a number of small, nonpeptidic lead inhibitors of BoNT serotype A light chain (BoNT/A LC) metalloprotease activity, and we identified a common pharmacophore for these molecules. In this study, we have focused on how the dynamic movement of amino acid residues in and surrounding the substrate binding …

Electronic Speckle Pattern Shearing Interferometry For Nondestructive Testing Of Thermal Sprayed Alloy Coatings, Qiang Xue

Conference Papers

Thermal sprayed coatings have wide engineering applications. There now exists a wide range of destructive and nondestructive testing (NDT) methods for surface coating inspections. This paper describes an application of electronic speckle pattern shearing Interferometry (ESPI) for NDT of thermal sprayed surface coatings. In contrast to other conventional methods such as eddy current, ultrasonic or X-ray, ESPSI allows fast and large survey area inspection. Experimental results of shearographic measurements are presented. Thermal sprayed coatings were tested using ESPI. Delaminations of the coatings were detected and the fringe patterns were captured using this method. It is shown that the shearography technique can …

Coming To Terms With Engineering Design As Content, Theodore Lewis Jan 2005

Coming To Terms With Engineering Design As Content, Theodore Lewis

Publications

This article addresses the challenges posed by engineering design as a content area of technology education. What adjustments will technology teachers have to make in their approach to teaching and learning when they teach design as engineering in response to the new standards? How faithful to engineering as practiced must their approach be? There is already some advocacy in the literature that greater attention will need to be paid to mathematics and science, where these subjects underpin design. Cotton (2002) proposed that mathematical theories should be applied to design in technology education classrooms, and that students should be encouraged to …

Women: Support Factors And Persistence In Engineering, John R. Duncan, Yong Zeng Jan 2005

Women: Support Factors And Persistence In Engineering, John R. Duncan, Yong Zeng

Reports of Center Studies

Limited information is available regarding the factors that promote persistence by women in engineering programs. Stated simply, the problem is that the number of women engineers continues to fall short in comparison to the gender ratio of women to men in the population in the U.S. (BEST, 2002) and worldwide (Hersh, 2000). More women engineers are needed in general and in proportion to male engineers. This study addressed two questions. (1) What are the factors that support women in engineering? and (2) What are the factors that attract women to and help them to persist in a career in engineering? …

Use Of Calcium Hypochlorite As A Sanitizer For Seeds Used For Sprouting: Task #2; Impact: Improved Alfalfa Decontamination Technologies, Emily Damron, Carrie Klein, Melissa Leach, Jordan Mourot, Tom Murphy, Amy Seamans, Ryan Wilson

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Consumption of raw or lightly cooked alfalfa sprouts has been a concern of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in recent years due to connections between sprouts and foodborne illnesses. Researchers have identified, contaminated seeds as the primary source of alfalfa sprouts contamination. Contamination of alfalfa seeds can originate in the field, harvesting, storing, or sprouting. Two pathogens of particular concern on alfalfa seeds are Escherichia coli 0157:H7 (E. coli) and Salmonella. These pathogens are capable of producing biofilms that provide protection for individual cells and allow for survival in otherwise hostile environments, including some disinfectant washes. Other factors …

The Properties Of Bridgestone Ecopia Solar Car Tires (For The Umr Solar Car Team), Tessa C. Russell

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Much of the energy used by a solar car can be attributed to overcoming rolling resistance, and rolling resistance comes predominantly from the tires. The main goal of this project was to better understand the properties of the Bridgestone Ecopia tires used by the UMR Solar Car Team. Experiments were conducted to obtain this objective, measuring the vertical stiffness, lateral stiffness, and contact patch shape and area. As expected, with decreasing pressure and increasing load, the vertical and lateral deflections increased as well as the tire contact patch area. The stiffness parameters of the tire measured experimentally were used in …

Geological Research Regarding A Well In Mutare, Zimbabwe, Laura Ruf Jan 2005

Geological Research Regarding A Well In Mutare, Zimbabwe, Laura Ruf

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

The purpose of this project was to collect information regarding the geology and hydrogeology of the area surrounding Mutare, as well as any other information that would be needed for determining a water supply for a well that will be built there. Unfortunately, much of this information could not be found. The two water sources that seem to be the most easily provided are building a well on spot or extending pipes to the Pungwe project. Determining which is the better choice would require a geologist or geological engineer to survey the site planned for the orphanage.

Emc Investigations In Switch Mode Power Supply, Ashwin Shashindranath Jan 2005

Emc Investigations In Switch Mode Power Supply, Ashwin Shashindranath

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

An experimental investigation on the radiated emissions caused by a high current switched mode power supply (SMPS) that supplies a CPU was performed. The emissions testing revealed data that could be used to predict causes of electromagnetic radiation from inside the computer. The noise sources identified included clocks on the motherboard, which was excluded for the purposes of this study. Testing concentrated on the SMPS and some theoretical ideas are proposed for better construction of the power supply.

Design Of Mobile Phone Applications For Point-Of-Care Test Result Validation., John Mcgrory, Owen Lynch, Eugene Coyle Jan 2005

Design Of Mobile Phone Applications For Point-Of-Care Test Result Validation., John Mcgrory, Owen Lynch, Eugene Coyle

Conference Papers

Patients with many different conditions are required to take the management of their condition into their own hands and perform Point of Care Testing (POCT) at home. However, this raises quality control issues that would not arise in a clinical setting, since the sample acquisition and testing procedures are not overseen by professional hospital staff. Another major issue, the main focus of this research, is that results from such tests are not clinically validated to ensure that they are plausible for that patient at the time of testing. In hospital, tests taken by clinicians are validated by hi-tech computerised validation …

Modulation Identification And Carrier Recovery System For Adaptive Modulation In Satellite Communications, Kenta Umebayashi, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza, Ryuji Kohno

Faculty Publications

We introduce the modulation identification technique implementing the multimode phase locked loop (PLL) in the satellite communication using adaptive modulation scheme which is a countermeasure against the rain attenuation. In the multimode PLL, phase lock detectors (PLDs) are used for not only phase lock, but also modulation identification. We present the sub-optimized design of the PLDs for modulation identification with respect to the throughput and show the validity of sub-optimization. In addition, by the comparison between the multimode PLL and conventional scheme in ISDB-S, we present the effectivity of the multimode PLL.

An Optimized Kinetics Model For Oh Chemiluminescence At High Temperatures And Atmospheric Pressures, Joel Hall Jan 2005

An Optimized Kinetics Model For Oh Chemiluminescence At High Temperatures And Atmospheric Pressures, Joel Hall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chemiluminescence from the OH(A-X) transition near 307 nm is a commonly used diagnostic in combustion applications such as flame chemistry, shock-tube experiments, and reacting-flow visualization. Measurements of the chemiluminescent intensity provide a simple, cost-effective, non-intrusive look at the combustion environment. The presence of the ultra-violet emission is often used as an indicator of the flame zone in practical combustion systems, and its intensity may be correlated to the temperature distribution or other parameters of interest. While absolute measurements of the ground-state OH(X) concentrations are well-defined, there is no elementary relation between emission from the electronically excited state (OH*) and its …
