A Flash Vaporization System For Detonation Of Hydrocarbon Fuels In A Pulse Detonation Engine, Kelly C. Tucker Jun 2005

A Flash Vaporization System For Detonation Of Hydrocarbon Fuels In A Pulse Detonation Engine, Kelly C. Tucker

Theses and Dissertations

Current research by the US Air Force and Navy is concentrating on obtaining detonations in a pulse detonation engine (PDE) with low vapor pressure, kerosene based jet fuels. These fuels have a low vapor pressure and the performance of a liquid hydrocarbon fueled PDE is significantly hindered by the presence of fuel droplets. A high pressure, fuel flash vaporization system (FVS) has been designed and built to reduce and eliminate the time required to evaporate the fuel droplets. Four fuels are tested: n-heptane, isooctane, aviation gasoline, and JP-8. The fuels vary in volatility and octane number and present a clear …

Influence Of Optical Fiber Coating Damage In The Light Transmissivity Characteristics Of Microbend Sensors, Franz Campero, Paul J. Cosentino, David C. Fleming, Edward H. Kalajian, Barry G. Grossman

Mechanical and Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

A laboratory testing and engineering modeling study was completed to determine the influence of fiber optic coating damage caused by microbend contact on the performance of microbend sensors developed based on relatively low cost single-sided microbending technique using a multimode optical fiber. A testing method was designed, developed and implemented to determine the loads that caused optical fiber glass-coating debonding and coating fracture. Finite Element models of the fiber-deformer system were developed to study the failure modes and predict the stresses that caused this failure. Loads and displacements predicted by Finite Element models were found to be in good agreement …

Effect Of Chaos And Stochastics Induced By Internal Waves On Acoustic Wave Propagation, Tatiana A. Andreeva, William W. Durgin Jun 2005

Effect Of Chaos And Stochastics Induced By Internal Waves On Acoustic Wave Propagation, Tatiana A. Andreeva, William W. Durgin

Office of the Provost Scholarship

In the present paper the eikonal equation is considered in the form of a second order, nonlinear ordinary differential equation with harmonic excitation due to internal wave. The harmonic excitation is taken imperfect, i.e. there is a random phase modulation due to Gaussian white noise. The amplitude and wavelength of the acoustic wave are used as the principle signal characteristics in bifurcation analysis. The regions of instability, identified using the bifurcation diagrams, examined through phase diagrams and Poincare maps. The effect of stochastic nature in addition to chaotic one of internal waves is demonstrated by means of comparison of the …

Design, Fabrication, And Characterization Of An Electrostatically Actuated Microfluidic Valve, Ryan Dale Rivers Jun 2005

Design, Fabrication, And Characterization Of An Electrostatically Actuated Microfluidic Valve, Ryan Dale Rivers

Master's Theses

Microfluidic device construction uses certain critical structures throughout many different applications. The valve structure remains one of the primary structures that present a barrier to miniaturization and portability. The extensive support devices required to power common microfluidic valves remove a significant amount of freedom from microfluidic device design. Moving to electrostatic methods of actuation could reduce the overall footprint of the microfluidic valve. This thesis covers three concept prototypes. Concept I presents an attempt at inlaying gold electrodes into polydimethylsiloxane substrates. Concept II attempts to use liquid silver injected into channels as electrode materials. Concept III uses aluminum sputtering to …

Towards Combining Probabilistic And Interval Uncertainty In Engineering Calculations: Algorithms For Computing Statistics Under Interval Uncertainty, And Their Computational Complexity, Vladik Kreinovich, Gang Xiang, Scott A. Starks, Luc Longpre, Martine Ceberio, Roberto Araiza, J. Beck, R. Kandathi, A. Nayak, R. Torres, J. Hajagos

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many engineering applications, we have to combine probabilistic and interval uncertainty. For example, in environmental analysis, we observe a pollution level x(t) in a lake at different moments of time t, and we would like to estimate standard statistical characteristics such as mean, variance, autocorrelation, correlation with other measurements. In environmental measurements, we often only measure the values with interval uncertainty. We must therefore modify the existing statistical algorithms to process such interval data.

In this paper, we provide a survey of algorithms for computing various statistics under interval uncertainty and their computational complexity. The survey includes both known …

Development Of High Efficiency Air Conditioner Condenser Fans, Florida Solar Energy Center, Danny Parker

FSEC Energy Research Center®

With sponsorship from the U.S. Department of Energy, a research project has designed, fabricated and tested improvements to an air conditioner outdoor unit fan system. The primary objective was to improve condenser fan performance while reducing motor power. We also examined potential changes to the condenser exhaust configuration to enhance air moving efficiency performance. A secondary objective was to provide sound reductions as lower noise AC equipment is important to consumers.

Within conducted tests, an improved high efficiency fan design and advanced exhaust diffuser section reduced fan motor power requirements by approximately 49 W (26%) while providing superior air flow. …

Which Fuzzy Logic Is The Best: Pragmatic Approach (And Its Theoretical Analysis), Vladik Kreinovich, Hung T. Nguyen

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In this position paper, we argue that when we are looking for the best fuzzy logic, we should specify in what sense the best, and that we get different fuzzy logics as ``the best'' depending on what optimality criterion we use.

Kolmogorov Complexity Leads To A Representation Theorem For Idempotent Probabilities (Sigma-Maxitive Measures), Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre Jun 2005

Kolmogorov Complexity Leads To A Representation Theorem For Idempotent Probabilities (Sigma-Maxitive Measures), Vladik Kreinovich, Luc Longpre

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many application areas, it is important to consider maxitive measures (idempotent probabilities), i.e., mappings m for which m(A U B)=max(m(A),m(B)). In his papers, J. H. Lutz has used Kolmogorov complexity to show that for constructively defined sets A, one maxitive measure - fractal dimension - can be represented as m(A)= sup{f(x): x in A}. We show that a similar representation is possible for an arbitrary maxitive measure.

If An Exact Interval Computation Problem Is Np-Hard, Then The Approximate Problem Is Also Np-Hard: A Meta-Result, Aline B. Loreto, Laira V. Toscani, Leila Robeiro, Dalcidio M. Claudio, Liara S. Leal, Luc Longpre, Vladik Kreinovich Jun 2005

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In interval computations, usually, once we prove that a problem of computing the exact range is NP-hard, then it later turns out that the problem of computing this range with a given accuracy is also NP-hard. In this paper, we provide a general explanation for this phenomenon.

Investigating Student Interest In Post-Secondary Stem Education, Anant R. Kukreti, Shafiqul Islam, Daniel B. Oerther, Karen C. Davis, Mark G. Turner, Catherine V. Maltbie, Thaddeus W. Fowler

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Interest among students for post-secondary STEM education and causes behind the declining enrollment rate was analyzed. A K-12 survey was developed at the University of Cincinnati to gather information directly from students to verify the teachers' statements regarding K-12 students' perceptions of the engineering profession and studying engineering in college. The K-12 student survey respondents indicated that about 28% of the 6-12 graders were interested in engineering. The survey also showed that students wanted to be an engineer because it was a stable living.

Improving Safety And Security By Developing A Traffic Accident Prevention System, Mohamed Abdel-Aty, Nizam Uddin, Anurag Pande

Civil and Environmental Engineering

This research aims at developing accident prediction models to improve freeway safety. Also by reducing incident related congestion on freeways, response and evacuation times would also be reduced in emergency situations. There are considerable amounts of data that are collected and stored for ITS applications. This data includes speed, volume and occupancy provided by loop detectors. Most of these variables are known to be related to accident occurrence and patterns. Previous work has shown the effect of speed variation and volume on traffic safety. In most of the previous work, average or historical speed and volume data have been used. …

Seismic Response Of Linear And Non-Linear Asymmetric Systems With Non-Linear Fluid Viscous Dampers, Rakesh K. Goel Jun 2005

Seismic Response Of Linear And Non-Linear Asymmetric Systems With Non-Linear Fluid Viscous Dampers, Rakesh K. Goel

Civil and Environmental Engineering

This investigation is concerned with the seismic response of one‐story, one‐way asymmetric linear and non‐linear systems with non‐linear fluid viscous dampers. The seismic responses are computed for a suite of 20 ground motions developed for the SAC studies and the median values examined. Reviewed first is the behaviour of single‐degree‐of‐freedom systems to harmonic and earthquake loading. The presented results for harmonic loading are used to explain a few peculiar trends—such as reduction in deformation and increase in damper force of short‐period systems with increasing damper non‐linearity—for earthquake loading. Subsequently, the seismic responses of linear and non‐linear asymmetric‐plan systems with non‐linear …

Technology And You: Working With The Aerospace Industry To Enhance Engineering Education, Russell M. Cummings, John H. Mcmasters

Aerospace Engineering

While many engineers in the aerospace engineering profession know that interacting with students is a good idea, few of them know how to do it. Certainly some engineers are asked on occasion to give lectures at various university club meetings, and some are even heavily involved in interacting with students working on various design projects, but the average engineer has little or no interaction with students over the course of their career. A number of companies, including Boeing, have created technical interest groups to encourage mentoring and sharing of corporate knowledge throughout the company. These efforts have been met with …

Positive Spin Polarization In Co/Alo3 /Co Tunnel Junctions Driven By Oxygen Adsorption, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Ivan I. Oleynik, Mark Van Schilfgaarde Jun 2005

Positive Spin Polarization In Co/Alo3 /Co Tunnel Junctions Driven By Oxygen Adsorption, Kirill D. Belashchenko, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Ivan I. Oleynik, Mark Van Schilfgaarde

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications

Using a first-principles Green's function technique, we study spin-dependent tunneling in two model realizations of (111) fcc Co/Al3/Co tunnel junctions assuming O-terminated crystalline epitaxy in the corundum structure. For the first model, which includes 3 O atoms at the interface, the tunneling current is polarized negatively, just as for the clean Co surface. The second model contains additional oxygen atoms inside large pores at each interface. Located at the three-fold hollow adsorption sites, these O atoms bind very strongly to Co. This bonding creates an interface band in the majority-spin channel which strongly enhances the tunneling current in this channel. …

Uv-Vis -Infrared Optical And Afm Study Of Spin-Cast Chitosan Films, W H. Nosal, D. W. Thompson, Sabyasachi Sarkar, Anuradha Subramanian, John A. Woollam, L Yan Jun 2005

Uv-Vis -Infrared Optical And Afm Study Of Spin-Cast Chitosan Films, W H. Nosal, D. W. Thompson, Sabyasachi Sarkar, Anuradha Subramanian, John A. Woollam, L Yan

Papers in Biotechnology

Optical properties OS spin-cast chitosan films have been determined in the infrared, visible, and ultraviolet region or the spectrum ~tsing spectroscopic ellipsometry. Optical constants for the Vvis-near IR spectra from 130 to 1700 nm were determined using Cauchy dispersion forms com-bined with Lorentzian oscillator models in the absorptive shorler wavelength regions. Infrared ndex of refraction and extinction coefficients from 750 to 4000cm-' were determined using ellip-sometric data fits to dispersion models based on harmonic oscillators. This modeling determined that optical onisotropy was present and measurable over all wavelength regions of ellipsomctric data. To obtain information on the micro- and nano-scale …

Stability Of Transport And Rate Processes [Review], Yaşar Demirel Jun 2005

Stability Of Transport And Rate Processes [Review], Yaşar Demirel

Papers in Thermal Mechanics

About fifty years ago, the Turing instability demonstrated that even simple reaction-diffusion systems might lead to spatial order and differentiation, while the Rayleigh-Bénard instability showed that the maintenance of nonequilibrium might be the source of order in fluids subjected to a thermodynamic force above a critical value. Therefore, distance from global equilibrium in the form of magnitude of a thermodynamic force emerges as another constraint of stability; some systems may enhance perturbations, and evolve to highly organized states called the dissipative structures after a critical distance on the thermodynamic branch. Although the kinetics and transport coefficients represent short-range interactions, chemical …

Kaluza-Klein 5d Ideas Made Fully Geometric, Scott A. Starks, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

After the 1916 success of General relativity that explained gravity by adding time as a fourth dimension, physicists have been trying to explain other physical fields by adding extra dimensions. In 1921, Kaluza and Klein has shown that under certain conditions like cylindricity (dg_{ij}/dx^5=0), the addition of the 5th dimension can explain the electromagnetic field. The problem with this approach is that while the model itself is geometric, conditions like cylindricity are not geometric. This problem was partly solved by Einstein and Bergman who proposed, in their 1938 paper, that the 5th dimension is compactified into a small circle S^1 …
