Spectrum Control And Iterative Coding For High Capacity Multiband Ofdm, Divaydeep Sikri Aug 2004

Spectrum Control And Iterative Coding For High Capacity Multiband Ofdm, Divaydeep Sikri

Theses

The emergence of Multiband Orthogonal Frequency Division Modulation (MB-OFDM) as an ultra-wideband (UWB) technology injected new optimism in the market through realistic commercial implementation, while keeping promise of high data rates intact. However, it has also brought with it host of issues, some of which are addressed in this thesis.

The thesis primarily focuses on the two issues of spectrum control and user capacity for the system currently proposed by the Multiband OFDM Alliance (MBOA). By showing that line spectra are still an issue for new modulation scheme (MB-OFDM), it proposes a mechanism of scrambling the data with an increased …

Surface Treatment Of Ferrous Alloys With Boron, Naruemon Suwattananont

Theses

Boronizing is a thermo-chemical surface hardening treatment in which boron atoms diffused into the metal substrate form the metallic boride layer, providing high hardness, corrosion resistance, and 3-10 times increasing service life. This type of surface treatment is widely used in many applications.

The purpose of this work was to investigate the structures and properties of boronized ferrous alloys. Three types of steels, AISI 1018 (plain low carbon steel), AISI 4340 (high strength alloy steel), and AISI 304 (austenitic stainless steel), were used for this study. The boronized AISI 1018 and AISI 4340 demonstrated the saw-tooth structure with average 75-76 …

Thermal Analysis Of Poly(Desamino Arylates), Ali Cem Recber

Theses

The goal of this study is to better understand the thermal characteristics and molecular behavior of two poly(desaminotyrosyl arylates). These two polymers were chosen from a combinatorial library of polymers developed by changing the type and size of the two substitutable chain locations. TGA, DSC and TSC studies were conducted on Poly(12,10) and Poly(2,2) after the samples were exposed to various conditions. The TGA of Poly(12,10) shows low water uptake at 25° C, higher water uptake at 80°C. Water uptake for Poly(2,2) at 25°C is similar to Poly(12,10) at 80°C. The Thermally Stimulated Current analysis (TSC) results indicate a molecular …

Detection Of Denial Of Service Attacks Using Database Queries, Dmytro Zakhalyavko Aug 2004

Detection Of Denial Of Service Attacks Using Database Queries, Dmytro Zakhalyavko

Theses

In the current intrusion detection world, most intrusion detection systems output data into flat files. This project was conducted in order to improve intrusion detection data and alerts by writing them into a database system and analyzing them with SQL. A database plug-in was developed that helps to transition the data from an intrusion detection system to a database. Storing, analyzing, categorizing, and accessing data are major advantages and reasons for using databases in intrusion detection. Security analysts have to constantly perform the difficult task of sorting through a haystack of attack alerts, many of which turn out to be …

Modeling Corrosion In Oxygen Controlled Lbe Systems With Coupling Of Chemical Kinetics And Hydrodynamics-Task V: Fourth Quarterly Report 06/01/2004-08/31/2004, Samir Moujaes, Yitung Chen

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The Lead-Bismuth eutectic (LBE) has been determined from previous experimental studies by the Russians and the European scientific community to be a potential material that can be used as a spallation target and coolant for the TRP proposed application. Properly controlling the oxygen content in LBE can drastically reduce the LBE corrosion to structural steels. However, existing knowledge of material corrosion performance was obtained from point-wise testing with only very sparse experimental data. Scientists have noticed that the concentration of oxygen dissolved in the liquid alloy could control the corrosion rate of steels exposed to Pb or Pb-Bi. At high …

Characterization Of Mechanical Behavior Of Electrospun Non-Woven Mats, Ajitha Patlolla Aug 2004

Characterization Of Mechanical Behavior Of Electrospun Non-Woven Mats, Ajitha Patlolla

Theses

Electrospinning is a simple and efficient method for the production of nanometer to micrometer fibers. While the process of electrospinning has been known for over half a century, current understanding of the process and those parameters that affect the properties of the fibers is very limited. Not much work has been done in the field electrospinning process to study the mechanical properties of nonwoven mats produced and to study parameters affecting their properties.

In the first part of this thesis electrospun nonwoven mats made of poly(lactides) solutions were characterized based on their mechanical behavior in biorelevant conditions. In the second …

Testing A Quantum Computer, Marek Perkowski, Jacob D. Biamonte Aug 2004

Testing A Quantum Computer, Marek Perkowski, Jacob D. Biamonte

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

We address the problem of quantum test set generation using measurement from a single basis and the single fault model. Experimental physicists currently test quantum circuits exhaustively, meaning that each n-bit permutative circuit requires ζ x 2n tests to assure functionality, and for an m stage permutative circuit proven not to function properly the current method requires ζ x 2n x m tests as the upper bound for fault localization, where zeta varies with physical implementation. Indeed, the exhaustive methods complexity grows exponentially with the number of qubits, proportionally to the number of stages in a quantum circuit and directly …

Optimal Sampling For Single-Tone Frequency Estimation, Travis E. Oliphant Aug 2004

Optimal Sampling For Single-Tone Frequency Estimation, Travis E. Oliphant

Faculty Publications

Single-tone frequency estimation from irregularly spaced samples is analyzed. The ratio of the Cramr-Rao Bound (CRB) for regularly spaced samples to the bound for irregularly spaced samples is presented and shown to be a globally convex function. It's minima and maxima over the domain of interest are identified which reveals that improvements in the CRB can be obtained using non-equally-spaced samples. For a given sampling density, the best estimates of frequency are obtained when half of the samples are taken at one end of the total available interval and the remaining samples are taken at the other end.

Chemical Microetching Of Three-Dimensional Gear-Like Pattern On Nickel Surface, Zhu-Fang Liu, Li-Ming Jiang, Jing Tang, Li Zhang, Zhong-Qun Tian, Zhao-Wu Tian, Pin-Kuan Liu, Li-Ning Sun

Journal of Electrochemistry

The chemical micromachining on nickel surface with three-dimensional (3D) gear-like mold was realized by confined etchant layer technique (CELT). By using effective chemical etching and scavenging system (HNO3 +NaOH) and optimizing experimental parameters, such as the etching time, etching current density, concentration of the etchant or and scavenger, we obtained the etched pattern, which is close to negative copy of the mold. The etched micro-pattern characterized by SEM and AFM, demonstrates that CELT can be applied to the 3-D microstructure replication on nickel surface.

Journal of Electrochemistry

TiO2(B) Nanobelts were synthesized by using the "Soft chemical"method. The products were characterized by means of transmission electron microscope(TEM), X-ray diffraction(XRD), Raman spectrum and energy dispersive spectrum(EDS). Galvanostatic charging and discharging tests showed that lithium-ion intercalation/deintercalation occurred reversibly in the TiO2(B) nanobelts electrode, and a high capacity (265 mAh·g-1) can be obtained. The results suggested that TiO2(B) Nanobelts might be a promising negative electrode material of second Lithium battery.

Preliminary Study Of Speek Membranes For Direct Methanol Fuel Cells Application, Su-Zhen Ren, Zhen-Xing Liang, Xin-Sheng Zhao, Qin Xing, Gong-Quan Sun, Xue-Feng Yang

Journal of Electrochemistry

This paper describes the methanol permeability characterization of SPEEK membranes and their feasibility for DMFC application. The SPEEK membranes showed a significant lower methanol permeation than Nafion 115 determined from voltammetric methods. An increase in open circuit voltage was found in the performance of SPEEK membranes in DMFC. The power density of the cell using SPEEK membrane was considerably poorer than that of Nafion 115. If modified properly, the SPEEK membranes can be chosen for DMFC application based on this study.
