First-Principles Study Of Adsorption Of Methanethiol On Co(0001), Ligen Wang, Evgeny Y. Tsymbal, Sitaram Jaswal

Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Faculty Publications

Investigation of the resident site and the adsorption phase structure of thiolates is of fundamental importance for understanding the formation of self-assembled organic monolayers on metal substrate surfaces. In the present study, we have investigated adsorption of methanethiol, CH3SH, on the ferromagnetic Co (0001) surface using density functional theory calculations. We find that the dissociative adsorption of CH3SH forming an adsorbed methylthiolate (CH3S) and an adsorbed H atom is energetically favorable, and that the CH3S molecule adsorbed at the threefold fcc and hcp hollow sites is most stable. The adsorption energy at the …

Geographic Variation In Potential Of Rooftop Residential Photovoltaic Electric Power Production In The United States, Florida Solar Energy Center, Matthew Lombardi

FSEC Energy Research Center®

This paper describes a geographic evaluation of Zero Energy Home (ZEH) potential, specifically an assessment of residential roof-top solar electric photovoltaic (PV) performance around the United States and how energy produced would match up with very-efficient and super-efficient home designs. We performed annual simulations for 236 TMY2 data locations throughout the United States on two highly-efficient one-story 3-bedroom homes with a generic grid-tied solar electric 2 kW PV system. These annual simulations show how potential annual solar electric power generation (kWh) and potential energy savings from PV power vary geographically around the U.S. giving the user in a specific region …

Energy Star Manufactured Homes: The Plant Certification Process, Florida Solar Energy Center, Dave Chasar Aug 2004

Energy Star Manufactured Homes: The Plant Certification Process, Florida Solar Energy Center, Dave Chasar

FSEC Energy Research Center®

In an on-going collaboration over the last ten years, researchers have worked with the manufactured housing industry offering building science advice and conducting diagnostic testing (Chandra et al 2002). This partnership resulted in the first two HUD code ENERGY STAR homes in 1997 and the development of standardized, in-plant Duct Blaster testing in 2001. One manufacturer is currently testing duct leakage on every home in 12 factories, representing over 8,000 homes per year.

In 2001, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) introduced the ENERGY STAR label for manufactured homes. Guidelines for this program focus on certification of the HUD-code plant …

Structural Graph Matching With Polynomial Bounds On Memory And On Worst-Case Effort, Fred W. Depiero Aug 2004

Structural Graph Matching With Polynomial Bounds On Memory And On Worst-Case Effort, Fred W. Depiero

Electrical Engineering

A new method of structural graph matching is introduced and compared against an existing method and against the maximum common subgraph. The method is approximate with polynomial bounds on both memory and on the worst-case compute effort. Methods work on arbitrary types of graphs and tests with strongly regular graphs are included. No node or edge colors are needed in the methods; the common subgraph is extracted based in structural comparisons only. Monte Carlo trials are benchmarked with 100% additional (clutter) nodes. Results are shown to be typically within 1-2 nodes of the maximum common subgraph. Over 7500 test trials …

Numerical Modeling Of Geophysical Granular Flows: 2. Computer Simulations Of Plinian Clouds And Pyroclastic Flows And Surges, Sebastien Dartevelle, William I. Rose, John Stix, Karim Kelfoun, James W. Vallance Aug 2004

Numerical Modeling Of Geophysical Granular Flows: 2. Computer Simulations Of Plinian Clouds And Pyroclastic Flows And Surges, Sebastien Dartevelle, William I. Rose, John Stix, Karim Kelfoun, James W. Vallance

Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications

Geophysical granular flows display complex nonlinear, nonuniform, and unsteady rheologies, depending on the volumetric grain concentration within the flow: kinetic, kinetic-collisional, and frictional. To account for the whole spectrum of granular rheologies (and hence concentrations), we have used and further developed for geophysical-atmospheric applications a multiphase computer model initially developed by U.S. Department of Energy laboratories: (Geophysical) Multiphase Flow with Interphase Exchange. As demonstrated in this manuscript, (G)MFIX can successfully simulate a large span of pyroclastic phenomena and related processes: plinian clouds, pyroclastic flows and surges, flow transformations, and depositional processes. Plinian cloud simulations agree well with the classical plume …

Electromagnetic Crosstalk Penalty In Serial Fiber Optic Modules, Xiaomin Jin, Keith D. Lystad, Musoke H. Sendaula Aug 2004

Electromagnetic Crosstalk Penalty In Serial Fiber Optic Modules, Xiaomin Jin, Keith D. Lystad, Musoke H. Sendaula

Electrical Engineering

Electromagnetic crosstalk poses a serious problem within today S advanced serial communication modules. A major detrimental effect is the degradation of receiver sensitivity in the presence of crosstalk noise. The mitigation of crosstalk penalty becomes increasingly more challenging as data rates increase for higher throughput and as module sizes shrink for increased port density. This paper is a study of the primary sources of crosstalk penalty in a 2.5 GB/s serial fiber optic transceiver and a 10Gb/s serial fiber optic transponder. A novel method for quantifying crosstalk penalty by observing a receiver’s bit-error-ratio (BER) versus transmitter to receiver signal phase …

An Analysis Of The Conventional Wire Maintenance Methods And Transition Wire Integrity Programs Utilized In The Aviation Industry., Susan Jeruto Kiptinness Aug 2004

An Analysis Of The Conventional Wire Maintenance Methods And Transition Wire Integrity Programs Utilized In The Aviation Industry., Susan Jeruto Kiptinness

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Aging aircraft wiring poses a significant threat to both commercial and military aircraft. Recent air disasters involving aging aircraft wiring have made it clear that aging wiring can be catastrophic. Aging of an electrical wiring system can result in loss of critical functions of equipment or loss of information regarding equipment operation. Either result can lead to an electrical failure causing smoke and fire, consequently being a danger to public health and aircraft safety.

Conventional maintenance practices do not effectively manage aging wiring problems. More proactive methods are needed so that aircraft wiring failures can be anticipated and wiring systems …

Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications

We present measurements of the whole scattering matrix as a function of the scattering angle at a wavelength of 632.8 nm in the scattering angle range 3°–174° of randomly oriented particles taken from seven samples of volcanic ashes corresponding to four different volcanic eruptions: the 18 May 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption, the 1989–1990 Redoubt eruption, and the 18 August and 17 September 1992 Mount Spurr eruptions. The samples were collected at different distances from the vent. The samples studied contain large mass fractions of fine particles and were chosen to represent ash that could remain in the atmosphere for …

Direct Least-Squares Ellipse Fitting, Jane Courtney, Annraoi Depaor Aug 2004

Direct Least-Squares Ellipse Fitting, Jane Courtney, Annraoi Depaor

Conference Papers

Many biological and astronomical forms can be best represented by ellipses. While some more complex curves might represent the shape more accurately, ellipses have the advantage that they are easily parameterised and define the location, orientation and dimensions of the data more clearly. In this paper, we present a method of direct least-squares ellipse fitting by solving a generalised eigensystem. This is more efficient and more accurate than many alternative approaches to the ellipse-fitting problem such as fuzzy c-shells clustering and Hough transforms. This method was developed for human body modelling as part of a larger project to design a …
