Exploiting Independent Filter Bandwidth Of Human Factor Cepstral Coefficients In Automatic Speech Recognition, Mark D. Skowronski, John G. Harris Sep 2004

Exploiting Independent Filter Bandwidth Of Human Factor Cepstral Coefficients In Automatic Speech Recognition, Mark D. Skowronski, John G. Harris

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) are the most widely used speech features in automatic speech recognition systems, primarily because the coefficients fit well with the assumptions used in hidden Markov models and because of the superior noise robustness of MFCC over alternative feature sets such as linear prediction-based coefficients. The authors have recently introduced human factor cepstral coefficients (HFCC), a modification of MFCC that uses the known relationship between center frequency and critical bandwidth from human psychoacoustics to decouple filter bandwidth from filter spacing. In this work, the authors introduce a variation of HFCC called HFCC-E in which filter bandwidth …

Electrostatic Radio Frequency (Rf) Microelectromechanical Systems (Mems) Switches With Metal Alloy Electric Contacts, Ronald A. Coutu Jr. Sep 2004

Electrostatic Radio Frequency (Rf) Microelectromechanical Systems (Mems) Switches With Metal Alloy Electric Contacts, Ronald A. Coutu Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

RF MEMS switches are paramount in importance for improving current and enabling future USAF RF systems. Electrostatic micro-switches are ideal for RF applications because of their superior performance and low power consumption. The primary failure mechanisms for micro-switches with gold contacts are becoming stuck closed and increased contact resistance with increasing switch cycles. This dissertation reports on the design, fabrication, and testing of micro-switches with sputtered bi-metallic (i.e., gold (Au)-on-Au-(6.3at%)platinum (Pt)), binary alloy (i.e., Au-(3.7at%)palladium (Pd) and Au-(6.3at%)Pt), and ternary alloy (i.e., Au-(5at%)Pt-(0.5at%)copper (Cu)) contact metals. Performance was evaluated, in-part, using measured contact resistance and lifetime results. The micro-switches with …

Quantifying Initial Condition And Parametric Uncertainties In A Nonlinear Aeroelastic System With An Efficient Stochastic Algorithm, Daniel R. Millman Sep 2004

Quantifying Initial Condition And Parametric Uncertainties In A Nonlinear Aeroelastic System With An Efficient Stochastic Algorithm, Daniel R. Millman

Theses and Dissertations

There is a growing interest in understanding how uncertainties in flight conditions and structural parameters affect the character of a limit cycle oscillation (LCO) response, leading to failure of an aeroelastic system. Uncertainty quantification of a stochastic system (parametric uncertainty) with stochastic inputs (initial condition uncertainty) has traditionally been analyzed with Monte Carlo simulations (MCS). Probability density functions (PDF) of the LCO response are obtained from the MCS to estimate the probability of failure. A candidate approach to efficiently estimate the PDF of an LCO response is the stochastic projection method. The objective of this research is to extend the …

The Physical Understanding Of The Use Of Coatings To Mitigate Hypervelocity Gouging Considering Real Test Sled Dimensions, Andrew G. Szmerekovsky Sep 2004

The Physical Understanding Of The Use Of Coatings To Mitigate Hypervelocity Gouging Considering Real Test Sled Dimensions, Andrew G. Szmerekovsky

Theses and Dissertations

A dimensional analysis with accompanying numerical investigation is conducted. A simplified model of the real test sled is created that allows test sled dimensions to be converted to a numerical model for analysis. The dimensional analysis is used as a means of directly applying the numerical results to real test sled conditions. Similarity principles are studied and tested by comparing the results from scaled numerical models. Strain rate and other time dependent parameters are not scaled, but the effect of these parameters may be quantified and studied further. The dimensional analysis also provides a comprehensive approach to the test sled …

A Tightly-Coupled Ins/Gps Integration Using A Mems Imu, Jonathan M. Neu

Theses and Dissertations

Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology holds great promise for future navigation systems because of the reduced size and cost of MEMS inertial sensors relative to conventional devices. Current MEMS devices are much less accurate than standard inertial sensors, but they can still be useful. In this thesis, data was recorded from an inexpensive MEMS inertial measurement unit and integrated with GPS measurements using a tightly-coupled Kalman filter. The overall goal of this research is to investigate the usefulness of MEMS sensors for a small, real-time, low-cost INS/GPS integration. A golf cart was used to collect dynamic data, along with a commercial …

A Fast And Simple Algorithm For Computing M Shortest Paths In Stage Graph, M. Sherwood, Laxmi P. Gewali, Henry Selvaraj, Venkatesan Muthukumar

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Research

We consider the problem of computing m shortest paths between a source node s and a target node t in a stage graph. Polynomial time algorithms known to solve this problem use complicated data structures. This paper proposes a very simple algorithm for computing all m shortest paths in a stage graph efficiently. The proposed algorithm does not use any complicated data structure and can be implemented in a straightforward way by using only array data structure. This problem appears as a sub-problem for planning risk reduced multiple k-legged trajectories for aerial vehicles.

Power-Stepped Protocol: Enhancing Spatial Utilization In A Clustered Mobile Ad Hoc Network, Chansu Yu, Kang G. Shin, Ben Lee Sep 2004

Power-Stepped Protocol: Enhancing Spatial Utilization In A Clustered Mobile Ad Hoc Network, Chansu Yu, Kang G. Shin, Ben Lee

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

While most previous studies on mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) rely on the assumption that nodes are randomly distributed in the network coverage area, this assumption is unlikely to hold, as nodes tend to be cluttered around hot spots like the site of an accident or disaster. We refer to this as a clustered layout. Intuitively, a MANET with the clustered layout may suffer from serious performance degradation due to the excessive collisions in congested hot spots and space underutilization of sparse areas. In this paper, we propose a power-controlled network protocol, called the power-stepped protocol (PSP), that maximizes the …

Mechanical Properties Of Carbon Nanotubes Composites, David Hui, Mircea Chipara, Jagannathan Sankar, K. T. Lau Sep 2004

Mechanical Properties Of Carbon Nanotubes Composites, David Hui, Mircea Chipara, Jagannathan Sankar, K. T. Lau

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

A critical review of theoretical models aiming to explain the physical properties of composites based on polymeric matrices reinforced with carbon nanotubes is presented. Attention is paid to descriptions based on molecular dynamics, continuum mechanics, and finite element analysis. It is shown that both the continuum mechanics approximation and the finite size element analyses fail to describe composites with very thin interfaces, while the performances of molecular dynamics simulations are still restricted by computer's performances. The limitations of the continuum mechanics approximation are analyzed in detail.

Optimizing Proportionally Fair Prices, Laura Wynter Sep 2004

Optimizing Proportionally Fair Prices, Laura Wynter

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We demonstrate the non-uniqueness of proportional fairness prices, and show that the model of Kelly et al. [9] falls into the category of models that can be generalized to allow optimization of the link prices, with a view toward profit maximization. However, through this framework, we also show that the total revenue that can be obtained through proportional fairness pricing on a network is unique.

Detection Of Configuration Memory Upsets Causing Persistent Errors In Sram-Based Fpgas, D. Eric Johnson, Keith S. Morgan, Michael J. Wirthlin, Michael P. Caffrey, Paul S. Graham Sep 2004

Detection Of Configuration Memory Upsets Causing Persistent Errors In Sram-Based Fpgas, D. Eric Johnson, Keith S. Morgan, Michael J. Wirthlin, Michael P. Caffrey, Paul S. Graham

Faculty Publications

Sponsorship: Los Alamos National Laboratory. FPGA designers are becoming increasingly aware of fault tolerance issues in modern FPGA designs, especially designs destined for a radiation environment. We classify errors due to upsets within the configuration bitstream into two categories; namely, persistent and non-persistent. Persistent errors generally cannot be tolerated. However, non-persistent errors can be tolerated in certain types of designs as long as they are properly accounted for. We discuss situations in which non-persistent errors are acceptable, and describe a technique for the detection of upsets causing persistent errors within the configuration memor of an SRAM-based FPGA.

Evaluation Of Power Costs In Applying Tmr To Fpga Designs, Nathaniel Rollins, Michael J. Wirthlin, Paul S. Graham Sep 2004

Evaluation Of Power Costs In Applying Tmr To Fpga Designs, Nathaniel Rollins, Michael J. Wirthlin, Paul S. Graham

Faculty Publications

Sponsorship: Los Alamos National Laboratory. Triple modular redundancy (TMR) is a technique commonly used to mitigate against design failures caused by single event upsets (SEUs). The SEU immunity that TMR provides comes at the cost of increased design area and decreased speed. Additionally, the cost of increased power due to TMR must be considered. This paper evaluates the power costs of TMR and validates the evaluations with actual measurements. Sensitivity to design placement is another important part of this study. Power consumption costs due to TMR are also evaluated in different FPGA architectures. This study shows that power consumption rises …

Initial Experiments In The Cooperative Control Of Unmanned Air Vehicles, Derek R. Nelson, Timothy W. Mclain, Reed S. Christiansen, Randal W. Beard, David Johansen Sep 2004

Initial Experiments In The Cooperative Control Of Unmanned Air Vehicles, Derek R. Nelson, Timothy W. Mclain, Reed S. Christiansen, Randal W. Beard, David Johansen

Faculty Publications

This paper addresses cooperative control for a team of unmanned air vehicles (UAVs). Specifically, a team of three small UAVs is controlled to perform a cooperative timing mission. Starting at loiter locations distributed around the periphery of a 2 km square battle area, the UAVs cooperatively plan paths to arrive at a target at the center of the battle area in sequence at 10 sec intervals. Cooperative path planning is performed using the methodology of coordination variables and coordination functions. Coordination and waypoint path planning are centralized on a ground station computer. Experiments have been performed using BYU’s fleet of …

A Development Framework For Rapid Metaheuristics Hybridization, Hoong Chuin Lau, M. K. Lim, W. C. Wan, S. Halim Sep 2004

A Development Framework For Rapid Metaheuristics Hybridization, Hoong Chuin Lau, M. K. Lim, W. C. Wan, S. Halim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

While meta-heuristics are effective for solving large-scale combinatorial optimization problems, they result from time-consuming trial-and-error algorithm design tailored to specific problems. For this reason, a software tool for rapid prototyping of algorithms would save considerable resources. This work presents a generic software framework that reduces development time through abstract classes and software reuse, and more importantly, aids design with support of user-defined strategies and hybridization of meta-heuristics. Most interestingly, we propose a novel way of redefining hybridization with the use of the "request and response" metaphor, which form an abstract concept for hybridization. Different hybridization schemes can now be formed …

A Two-Level Framework For Coalition Formation Via Optimization And Agent Negotiation, Hoong Chuin Lau, Lei Zhang Sep 2004

A Two-Level Framework For Coalition Formation Via Optimization And Agent Negotiation, Hoong Chuin Lau, Lei Zhang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We present a two-level coalition formation approach based on a centralized optimization model on the upper level, and a distributed agent-negotiation model on the lower level. This approach allows us to balance agent self-interests against a high joint utility. Experimental results show that the two-level coalition formation mechanism will increase not only the overall utility of the coalition, but also the individual utility of most participating agents. The results also suggest it is better for the agents to be partially cooperative rather than either fully cooperative or self-interested in our setting.

Investigating Graphical User Interface Usability On Task Sequence And Display Structure Dependencies, Tirthankar Sengupta Aug 2004

Investigating Graphical User Interface Usability On Task Sequence And Display Structure Dependencies, Tirthankar Sengupta

Dissertations

Designing Graphical User Interfaces (GUI) requires the consideration of task sequence requirements (sequence of operations arising from task structures and application constraints) and display structure (layout of the elements of the interface) relationships. The basic purpose was to understand the usability differences of the interfaces through efficiency, motor performance, and search performance.

Thirty-two subjects performed experiments in four groups. The experiments differed in display structure and compatibility of task sequences. Subject mouse actions, mouse coordinates and eye positions were recorded. The derived measures, click efficiency, mouse traversal and eye visits to different areas of interest (namely the tool, object, and …

Network Anomaly Detection Using Management Information Base (Mib) Network Traffic Variables, Jun Li Aug 2004

Network Anomaly Detection Using Management Information Base (Mib) Network Traffic Variables, Jun Li

Dissertations

In this dissertation, a hierarchical, multi-tier, multiple-observation-window, network anomaly detection system (NADS) is introduced, namely, the MIB Anomaly Detection (MAD) system, which is capable of detecting and diagnosing network anomalies (including network faults and Denial of Service computer network attacks) proactively and adaptively. The MAD system utilizes statistical models and neural network classifier to detect network anomalies through monitoring the subtle changes of network traffic patterns. The process of measuring network traffic pattern is achieved by monitoring the Management Information Base (Mifi) II variables, supplied by the Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) LI. The MAD system then converted each monitored …

Modeling Contaminant Transport And Fate And Subsequent Impacts On Ecosystems, Ming Fan Aug 2004

Modeling Contaminant Transport And Fate And Subsequent Impacts On Ecosystems, Ming Fan

Dissertations

Assessing risks associated with the release of metals into the environment and managing remedial activities requires simulation tools that depict speciation and risk with accurate mechanistic models and well-defined transport parameters. Such tools need to address the following processes: (1) aqueous speciation, (2) distribution mechanisms, (3) transport, and (4) ecological risk. The primary objective of this research is to develop a simulation tool that accounts for these processes. Speciation in the aqueous phase can be assessed with geochemical equilibrium models, such as MINEQL+. Furthermore, metal distribution can be addressed mechanistically. Studies with Pb sorption to amorphous aluminum (HAG), iron (HFO), …

Continuity Of Bridges Composed Of Simple-Span Precast Prestressed Concrete Girders Made Continuous, Libin Yin Aug 2004

Continuity Of Bridges Composed Of Simple-Span Precast Prestressed Concrete Girders Made Continuous, Libin Yin

Dissertations

Bridges composed of simple-span, precast, prestressed concrete girders made continuous via cast-in-place decks and diaphragms are continuous only for live loads and superimposed dead loads. The continuity diaphragms often crack due to time dependent effects in the girders. These cracks not only impair bridge ascetics and durability, but also reduce "degree of continuity". A related issue is that joint construction is time consuming and expensive due to reinforcement congestion. This dissertation presents a series of field tests, analytical studies, and laboratory experiments concerning the design and performance of this type of bridge.

Based on a survey of the state departments …

Fluidization Of Nanoparticles, Caroline Hijung Nam Aug 2004

Fluidization Of Nanoparticles, Caroline Hijung Nam

Dissertations

During the past decade, nanoparticles (1-100 nm) and nanocomposites have become the focus of many studies due to the unique properties of nanostructured materials that make them attractive for various applications. Due to their atomic and molecular interactions, nanoparticles and nanocomposites have unique and often favorable catalytic, mechanical, optical, electronic and / or other properties. For instance, nanocrystalline copper is up to 5 times harder than conventional micron sized copper particles. Nanocomposites, such as a homogenous mixture of different nanoparticles, can also exhibit improved properties. Other examples include coating and reacting nanoparticles with a second nanostructured phase. These processes are …

The wet ESP is preferably downstream from a conventional turbulent dry ESP for collecting a substantial portion of the larger particulate in the gas stream prior to the gas stream entering the wet ESP.

Modeling Corrosion In Oxygen Controlled Lbe Systems With Coupling Of Chemical Kinetics And Hydrodynamics-Task V: Trp Final Report 09/01/2003-08/31/2004, Samir Moujaes, Yitung Chen Aug 2004

Modeling Corrosion In Oxygen Controlled Lbe Systems With Coupling Of Chemical Kinetics And Hydrodynamics-Task V: Trp Final Report 09/01/2003-08/31/2004, Samir Moujaes, Yitung Chen

Transmutation Sciences Materials (TRP)

The Lead-Bismuth eutectic (LBE) has been determined from previous experimental studies by the Russians and the European scientific community to be a potential material that can be used as a spallation target and coolant for the TRP proposed application. Properly controlling the oxygen content in LBE can drastically reduce the LBE corrosion to structural steels. However, existing knowledge of material corrosion performance was obtained from point-wise testing with only very sparse experimental data. Scientists have noticed that the concentration of oxygen dissolved in the liquid alloy could control the corrosion rate of steels exposed to Pb or Pb-Bi. At high …

Stochastic Bifurcation In A Driven Laser System: Experiment And Theory, Lora Billings, Ira Schwartz, David Morgan, Erik Bollt, Riccardo Meucci, Enrico Allaria

Department of Mathematics Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

We analyze the effects of stochastic perturbations in a physical example occurring as a higher-dimensional dynamical system. The physical model is that of a class-B laser, which is perturbed stochastically with finite noise. The effect of the noise perturbations on the dynamics is shown to change the qualitative nature of the dynamics experimentally from a stochastic periodic attractor to one of chaoslike behavior, or noise-induced chaos. To analyze the qualitative change, we apply the technique of the stochastic Frobenius-Perron operator [L. Billings et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 234101 (2002)] to a model of the experimental system. Our main result …

Carrier Transport In Ge Nanowires And One Dimensional Si/Ge Heterojunctions, Eun Kyu Lee Aug 2004

Carrier Transport In Ge Nanowires And One Dimensional Si/Ge Heterojunctions, Eun Kyu Lee

Theses

Ge Nanowires (Ge NWs) on single crystal, (100) and (111) oriented n-type Si substrates were grown via the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) mechanism and studied with respect to their electrical properties.

Using different contact geometries, direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) electrical and photoelectrical measurements were carried out at room temperature to investigate electrical properties of Ge NWs and Ge NWs/Si substrate one-dimensional (1 D) heterojunctions (HJs). A rectifying junction behavior is observed at NWs/substrate interface, but many orders of magnitude greater AC conductance than DC in Ge NW volume is measured at high frequencies. The obtained experimental data are consistent …

Fluidization Of Agglomerates Of Nanoparticles Under Different Force Fields, Jose A. Quevedo Aug 2004

Fluidization Of Agglomerates Of Nanoparticles Under Different Force Fields, Jose A. Quevedo

Theses

Nanoparticles are the focus of many research activities, and in the near future they will be handled in large amounts by industry. Fluidization is a very important unit operation which is applied in several industrial processes.

In the present work, fluidization experiments with agglomerates of nanoparticles were done under different force fields: (1) gravity force or conventional fluidization; (2) a magnetic force field, which uses magnetic particles under the influence of a magnetic field; and (3) a centrifugal force, generated by a rotating frame that simulates higher gravity conditions.

Among the significant results with agglomerates of nanoparticles, conventional fluidization was …
