A Docking Score Function For Estimating Ligand-Protein Interactions: Application To Acetylcholinesterase Inhibition, Jianxin Guo, Margaret M. Hurley, Jeffery B. Wright, Gerald H. Lushington Jan 2004

A Docking Score Function For Estimating Ligand-Protein Interactions: Application To Acetylcholinesterase Inhibition, Jianxin Guo, Margaret M. Hurley, Jeffery B. Wright, Gerald H. Lushington

United States Army: Publications

Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition is an important research topic because of its wide range of associated health implications. A receptor-specific scoring function was developed herein for predicting binding affinities for human AChE (huAChE) inhibitors. This method entails a statistically trained weighted sum of electrostatic and van der Waals (VDW) interactions between ligands and the receptor residues. Within the 53 ligand training set, a strong correlation was found (R2 = 0.89) between computed and experimental inhibition constants. Leave-oneout cross-validation indicated high predictive power (Q2 = 0.72), and analysis of a separate 16-compound test set also produced very good correlation with …

Liquid Crystal Based Optical Switches, Yuliya Semenova, S. Dovgalets, Yuri Panarin, Gerald Farrell Jan 2004

Liquid Crystal Based Optical Switches, Yuliya Semenova, S. Dovgalets, Yuri Panarin, Gerald Farrell

Articles

Optical switches using two electro-optical effects in liquid crystals are proposed and investigated for incorporation in a switch matrix for optical networks. These two devices employ selective reflection in cholesteric layers and total reflection at the border between glass and nematic liquid crystal. Prototypes of these switches have been designed and their parameters have been investigated. Initial results suggest the switching contrast ratio of 38.5 and 42 dB, respectively, with insertion loss about 2.3…2.9 dB for polarized light.

Investigation Of Four-Wheel Steering Algorithms For A Formula Sae Car, Colm O'Kane, Sean Timoney

Conference Papers

An algorithm was developed for a speed-dependent four-wheel steering system for a Formula SAE car. A linear bicycle model was implemented using the MATLAB and SIMULINK software packages. Various control laws were investigated for the rear steer angle with the objective of reducing the sideslip angle. A full 3D model of the vehicle incorporating weight transfer and tire non-linearity was then developed using the DADS software. An algorithm developed using the linear model with the aim of reducing vehicle sideslip angle was implemented in the nonlinear model. It is shown that this algorithm can improve the dynamic performance for both …

Endocrine-Disrupting Effects Of Cattle Feedlot Effluent On An Aquatic Sentinel Species, The Fathead Minnow, Edward Orlando, Alan Kolok, Gerry Binzcick, Jennifer Gates, Megan Horton, Christy Lambright, L. Earl Gray, Jr., Ana M. Soto, Louis J. Guilette, Jr.

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Over the last decade, research has examined the endocrine-disrupting action of various environmental pollutants, including hormones, pharmaceuticals, and surfactants, in sewage treatment plant effluent. Responding to the growth of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) and the pollutants present in their wastewater (e.g., nutrients, pharmaceuticals, and hormones), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency developed a new rule that tightens the regulation of CAFOs. In this study, we collected wild fathead minnows (Pimephales promelas) exposed to feedlot effluent (FLE) and observed significant alterations in their reproductive biology. Male fish were demasculinized (having lower testicular testosterone synthesis, altered head morphometrics, and smaller …

Evaluating The Human Relevance Of Chemically Induced Animal Tumors, Samuel M. Cohen, James Klaunig, M. Elizabeth Meek, Richard N. Hill, Timothy Pastoor, Lois Lehman-Mckeeman, John Bucher, David G. Longfellow, Jennifer Seed, Vicki Dellarco, Penelope Fenner-Crisp, Dorothy Patton

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Defining the mode(s) of action by which chemicals induce tumors in laboratory animals has become a key to judgments about the relevance of such tumor data for human risk assessment. Frameworks for analyzing mode of action information appear in recent U.S. EPA and IPCS publications relating to cancer risk assessment. This FORUM paper emphasizes that mode of action analytical frameworks depend on both qualitative and quantitative evaluations of relevant data and information: (1) presenting key events in the animal mode of action, (2) developing a “concordance” table for side-by-side comparison of key events as defined in animal studies with comparable …

Using Web Services To Integrate Heterogeneous Simulations In A Grid Environment, J. Mark Pullen, Ryan Brunton, Don Brutzman, David Drake, Michael Hieb, Katherine L. Morse, Andreas Tolk

Computational Modeling & Simulation Engineering Faculty Publications

The distributed information technologies collectively known as Web services recently have demonstrated powerful capabilities for scalable interoperation of heterogeneous software across a wide variety of networked platforms. This approach supports a rapid integration cycle and shows promise for ultimately supporting automatic composability of services using discovery via registries. This paper presents a rationale for extending Web services to distributed simulation environments, including the High Level Architecture (HLA), together with a description and examples of the integration methodology used to develop significant prototype implementations. A logical next step is combining the power of Grid computing with Web services to facilitate rapid …

The Cool Flames Experiment: Recent Results At Reduced And Partial Gravity, Michael R. Foster Jan 2004

The Cool Flames Experiment: Recent Results At Reduced And Partial Gravity, Michael R. Foster

Faculty Publications - Biomedical, Mechanical, and Civil Engineering

Cool flames at Earth (1g), Martian (0.38g), Lunar (0.18g) and reduced-gravity (10–2g) have been studied experimentally in a closed, unstirred, static reactor to better understand the role of natural convection and diffusive transport on the induction period(s), flame shape, flame propagation speed, pressure history and temperature profile. Natural convection is known to play an important role in all terrestrial, unstirred, static reactor cool flame and auto-ignition experiments when the Rayleigh number exceeds 600 [2,3,6]. At 1g, typical values of the Ra are 10^4-10^6.

In this paper, experimental results from static, unstirred reactor studies conducted at four different gravitational acceleration levels …

Printed Planar Monopole Antenna With Electromagnetically Coupled Elements, Jonathan Evans, Francisco Lerma, Max Ammann Jan 2004

Printed Planar Monopole Antenna With Electromagnetically Coupled Elements, Jonathan Evans, Francisco Lerma, Max Ammann

Conference papers

In this paper, the addition of an EM-coupled element to the printed planar monopole antenna is investigated. While remaining simple to construct, modifications to the EM-coupled element are shown to reduce the lower edge frequency of the 10 dB impedance bandwidth by up to ∼19% (280 MHz at 1.5 GHz). The radiation patterns for these antennas are characteristic of monopole antennas - i.e. omnidirectional in the azimuth plane with a at the zenith - and are consistent within +/- 2 dB across their useful impedance bandwidths. By optimizing the feed arrangements on these antennas a 10 dB impedance bandwidth ratio …

Transient Photovoltage In Gan As Measured By Atomic Force Microscope Tip, M. A. Reshchikov, S. Sabuktagin, D. K. Johnstone, H. Morkoç

Electrical and Computer Engineering Publications

We studied restoration of the band bending at the surface of undoped GaN layers after illumination with above-bandgap light. The photovoltage saturated with illumination at about 0.2–0.3 eV at room temperature, although the upward band bending for GaN in the dark is of the order of 1 eV. We attribute the photovoltage effect to charging of the surface states, the density of which is estimated at about 10^12 cm^−2. Restoration of the barrier after a light pulse is simulated by a phenomenological model whereby the acceptorlike surface states are emptied of electrons under illumination and filled back in dark due …

Enabling The Re-Engineering Of Material Purchasing In The Construction Industry By The Effective Use Of Information Technology, Alan V. Hore, Roger West

Conference papers

The current methods of ordering, delivering and invoicing of materials in the construction industry is enormously inefficient, with vast quantities of paperwork, duplication of effort, scanning, re-keying and resolving mismatches between invoices, delivery dockets and purchase orders. This paper sets out the results of a successful 2005 pilot project which achieved a three-way electronic match of the purchase order, delivery note and supplier invoice information. The paper goes on to describe the opportunities and challenges of introducing such a system in the Irish construction industry

Flexural Strengthening Of Bridge Piers Using Frp Composites, Tarek Alkhrdaji, Antonio Nanni Jan 2004

Flexural Strengthening Of Bridge Piers Using Frp Composites, Tarek Alkhrdaji, Antonio Nanni

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

The effectiveness of FRP jackets for increasing the shear capacity and the flexural ductility of reinforced concrete (RC) columns was demonstrated in many studies. However, for smaller axial loads, the contribution of FRP jackets to flexural strength is minimal. using FRP sheets in the direction of a column with end anchorage to improve its flexural capacity at the base is not easily achieved. This paper reports on a research project aimed at upgrading the flexural capacity of RC piers using near-surface mounted (NSM) FRP rods. Flexural strengthening and testing to failure of the piers were carried out on a bridge …

A Predictive Sensor Network Using Ant System, Rajani Muraleedharan, Lisa Ann Osadciw Jan 2004

A Predictive Sensor Network Using Ant System, Rajani Muraleedharan, Lisa Ann Osadciw

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

The need for a robust predictive sensor communication network inspired this research. There are many critical issues in a communication network with different data rate requirements, limited power and bandwidth. Energy consumption is one of the key issues in a sensor network as energy dissipation occurs during routing, communication and monitoring of the environment. This paper covers the routing of a sensor communication network by applying an evolutionary algorithm- the ant system. The issues considered include optimal energy, data fusion from different sensor types and predicting changes in environment with respect to time.

Open-Ended Problem-Solving Skills In Thermal-Fluids Engineering, Nikos J. Mourtos, Nicole Dejong-Okamoto, Jinny Rhee Jan 2004

Open-Ended Problem-Solving Skills In Thermal-Fluids Engineering, Nikos J. Mourtos, Nicole Dejong-Okamoto, Jinny Rhee

Faculty Publications

Problem-solving skills have always been important in many professions. However, ABET EC 2000 recently placed a new focus on these skills in engineering education with outcome 3e, which states that engineering graduates must have an ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems. Problem-solving is defined as a process used to obtain a best answer to an unknown or a decision that is subject to some constraints. Problem-solving is not the same as textbook exercise solving, which is very common in engineering curricula. In the article, the authors first define engineering problem-solving and, in particular, what it means to identify …

Retesting Of Liquefaction And Non-Liquefaction Case Histories In The Imperial Valley Using Cpt, Robb E.S. Moss, Brian D. Collins, Daniel H. Whang, Jonathan P. Stewart

Civil and Environmental Engineering

This report documents the retesting of liquefaction and non-liquefaction field case histories in the Imperial Valley with the cone penetration test (CPT). The River Park and Heber Road sites were originally tested using a mechanical cone following the 1979 Imperial Valley Earthquake (Bennett et al., 1981; Youd & Bennett, 1983). These two sites are rich in information because they have experienced several earthquakes in recent history, have been subjected to moderate levels of strong ground shaking, the liquefiable soils have appreciable fines content, and the sites contain a number of non-liquefied data points.

Recent liquefaction case histories databases (Moss et …
