Future Of Asynchronous Transfer Mode Networking, Fakhreddine Mohamed Hachfi Jan 2004

Future Of Asynchronous Transfer Mode Networking, Fakhreddine Mohamed Hachfi

Theses Digitization Project

The growth of Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) was considered to be the ideal carrier of the high bandwidth applications like video on demand and multimedia e-learning. ATM emerged commercially in the beginning of the 1990's. It was designed to provide a different quality of service at a speed up 100 Gbps for both real time and non real time application. The turn of the 90's saw a variety of technologies being developed. This project analyzes these technologies, compares them to the Asynchronous Transfer Mode and assesses the future of ATM.

The Values Of Being Small And Nimble, Joshua Shuart, Peter Christian ("Chris") Murphy Jan 2004

The Values Of Being Small And Nimble, Joshua Shuart, Peter Christian ("Chris") Murphy

New England Journal of Entrepreneurship

Peter Christian (Chris) Murphy had worked his way up the “food chain” at AT&T for 19 years, culminating in his position as Sales Center Vice President for South Florida. When he and a coworker realized there was an opportunity in the marketplace for a small, nimble company to take advantage of emerging communications technology that a stodgy, lumbering corporation would have trouble integrating into its service package, Chris decided to jump into an entrepreneurial opportunity.

The Removal Of Motion Artifacts From Non-Invasive Blood Pressure Measurements, Paresh Thakkar Jan 2004

The Removal Of Motion Artifacts From Non-Invasive Blood Pressure Measurements, Paresh Thakkar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Modern Automatic Blood Pressure Measurement Techniques are based on measuring the cuff pressure and on sensing the pulsatile amplitude variations. These measurements are very sensitive to motion of the patient or the surroundings where the patient is. The slightest unexpected movements could offset the readings of the automatic Blood Pressure meter by a large amount or render the readings totally meaningless. Every effort must be taken to avoid subjecting the body of the patient or the patient's surroundings to motion for obtaining a reliable reading. But there are situations in which we need Blood Pressure Measurements with the patient or …

Selected Collaborative Problem-Solving Methods For Industry, Dr. Anthony Mark Doggett Jan 2004

Selected Collaborative Problem-Solving Methods For Industry, Dr. Anthony Mark Doggett

Architectural and Manufacturing Sciences Faculty Publications

Despite the availability of a wide range of problem solving methods, individuals continue to struggle with problems. Scientists attempt to address recurring economic, social, political, and organizational problems through the expansion of knowledge and theory. ... Cause-effect relationships advance logical explanations, predict future events, and forecast consequences. Theories and thinking based on cause-effect findings become recognized science (Goldratt, 1990) and move the field of inquiry from "art" to that of disciplined examination. In problem solving, the root cause of the problem produces an undesirable effect. Any pursuit that does not seek the root cause leads only to the symptom of the …

Observations Upon Entering The Kettle, Gary Spivey Jan 2004

Observations Upon Entering The Kettle, Gary Spivey

Faculty Publications - Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

An oft told parable relates how a frog, when dropped in a kettle of hot water, will instantly jump out. But if you drop that frog in a kettle of cold water, and slowly heat it up, the frog will not be aware of the gradual change in its environment and will die in the kettle. I had formerly limited the kettle analogy to the broad concepts of the “worldly culture” alluded to by pastors who use this imagery. Then, after completing educational experience at major state universities and a fifteen year career in industry, I decided to enter upon …

Orchestration Within The Sonification Of Basic Data Sets, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle Jan 2004

Orchestration Within The Sonification Of Basic Data Sets, Charlie Cullen, Eugene Coyle

Conference papers

The use of sonification as a means of representing and analysing data has become a growing field of research in recent years and as such has become a far more accepted means of working with data. Existing work carried out as part of this research has focused primarily on the sonification of DNA/RNA sequences and their subsequent protein structures for the purposes of analysis. This sonification work raised many questions as regards the need for sequences to be set to music in a standard manner so that different strands could be analysed by comparison, and hence the orchestration and instrumentation …

Predicting Freeway Crashes From Loop Detector Data By Matched Case-Control Logistic Regression, Mohamed Abdel-Aty, Nizam Uddin, Anurag Pande, Fathy M. Abdalla, Liang Hsia

Civil and Environmental Engineering

Growing concern over traffic safety has led to research into prediction of freeway crashes in an advanced traffic management and information systems environment. A crash likelihood prediction model was developed by using real-time traffic flow variables (measured through a series of underground sensors) potentially associated with crash occurrence. The issues related to real-time application, including range of stations and time slice duration to be examined, were also addressed. The methodology used, matched case-control logistic regression, was adopted from epidemiological studies in which every crash is a case and corresponding noncrashes act as controls. The 5-min average occupancy observed at the …

Structure/Function Analyses Of Human Serum Paraoxonase (Hupon1) Mutants Designed From A Dfpase-Like Homology Model, David T. Yeung, Denis Josse, James D. Nicholson, Akhil Khanal, Christopher W. Mcandrew, Brian B. Bahnson, David E. Lenz, Douglas M. Cerasoli

United States Army: Publications

Human serum paraoxonase (HuPON1) is a calcium-dependent enzyme that hydrolyzes esters, including organophosphates and lactones, and exhibits anti-atherogenic properties. A few amino acids have been shown to be essential for the enzyme’s arylesterase and organophosphatase activities. Until very recently, a three-dimensional model was not available for HuPON1, so functional roles have not been assigned to those residues. Based on sequence-structure alignment studies, we have folded the amino acid sequence of HuPON1 onto the sixfold β-propeller structure of squid diisopropylfluorophosphatase (DFPase). We tested the validity of this homology model by circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy and site-directed mutagenesis. Consistent with predictions from …

Operator-Based Semantics For Logic Programs, Pascal Hitzler Jan 2004

Operator-Based Semantics For Logic Programs, Pascal Hitzler

Computer Science and Engineering Faculty Publications

The question how knowledge can be represented by means of logic programs with negation has been a driving force for the field of non-monotonic reasoning. Implemented systems, known as answer set programming systems, have emerged recently and are currently being used in various application domains like the semantic web.

Intuitively, logic programs are being used for encoding commonsense reasoning, in particular the phenomenon that human reasoning tends to ”jump to conclusions” under incomplete knowledge. Formally, this kind of reasoning is described by interpreting the first-order syntax of logic programs in a more sophisticated way. This, in turn, is most easily …

A Turn To Engineering: The Continuing Struggle Of Technology Education For Legitimization As A School Subject, Theodore Lewis Jan 2004

A Turn To Engineering: The Continuing Struggle Of Technology Education For Legitimization As A School Subject, Theodore Lewis

Publications

In the long march from manual training, the subject which today we call technology education has always had to contend with the question of its legitimacy as valid school knowledge. In this regard, it shares a similar history of struggle with other subjects whose initial entry into the curriculum was based on a utilitarian rather than an academic rationale. Goodson (1983) documents such cases (e.g. geography and biology) showing how in their struggle for acceptance, the primary strategy of advocates was to try to enhance the academic bona fides of their subject. He explained that utilitarian knowledge is associated with …

A Comparative Evaluation Of .Net Remoting And Java Rmi, Taneem Ibrahim Jan 2004

A Comparative Evaluation Of .Net Remoting And Java Rmi, Taneem Ibrahim

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Distributed application technologies such as Micrososoft.NET Remoting, and Java Remote Method Invocation (RMI) have evolved over many years to keep up with the constantly increasing requirements of the enterprise. In the broadest sense, a distributed application is one in which the application processing is divided among two or more machines. Distributed middleware technologies have made significant progress over the last decade. Although Remoting and RMI are the two of most popular contemporary middleware technologies, little literature exists that compares them. In this paper, we study the issues involved in designing a distributed system using Java RMI and Microsoft.NET Remoting. In …

An Integral Form Of The Variational Nodal Method, M. A. Smith, G. Palmiotti, E. E. Lewis, Nicholas Tsoulfanidis

Nuclear Engineering and Radiation Science Faculty Research & Creative Works

An integral form of the variational nodal method is formulated, implemented, and tested. the method combines an integral transport treatment of the even-parity flux within the spatial node with an odd-parity spherical harmonics expansion of the Lagrange multipliers at the node interfaces. the response matrices that result from this formulation are compatible with those in the VARIANT code at Argonne National Laboratory. Spatial discretization within each node allows for accurate treatment of homogeneous or heterogeneous node geometries. the integral method is implemented in Cartesian x-y geometry and applied to three benchmark problems. the method's accuracy is compared to that of …

Raindrop Size Distribution Retrieval And Evaluation Using An S-Band Radar Profiler, Fang Fang Jan 2004

Raindrop Size Distribution Retrieval And Evaluation Using An S-Band Radar Profiler, Fang Fang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Vertical pointing Doppler radar profilers are used to explore the vertical structure of precipitation cloud systems and to provide validation information for use in weather research. In this thesis, a theoretical radar rain-backscatter model was developed to simulate profiler Doppler spectra as a function of assumed rain parameters, of which the raindrop size distribution (DSD) is the fundamental quantity used to describe the characteristics of rain. Also, profiler observations during stratiform rain are analyzed to retrieve the corresponding rain DSD’s. In particular, a gamma distribution model is introduced, which uses Rayleigh scattering portion of the Doppler velocity spectrum to estimate …
