Construction Of Diaphragm Wall Support Underground Car Park In Historical Area Of Bangkok, Narong Thasnanipan, Zaw Zaw Aye, Chanchai Submaneewong

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Geotechnical aspects in construction of diaphragm-wall-support 2 level underground car park building, located in the historically and culturally significant area of Bangkok is presented in this paper. Results of the preliminary analyses showed that the deflection of the thin diaphragm wall of 0.60 m width would be large if it was to be fully cantilevered to fulfill the architectural and utility aspects of the car park structure. It was therefore decided to use buttress to minimize the diaphragm wall deflection. Performance of buttressed-support diaphragm wall is demonstrated based on the inclinometer monitoring results. Intensive modification of construction sequence in actual …

Railway Tunnelling In Frozen Ground On Bothniabana, S. Saarelainen, L. Korkiala-Tanttu, J. Viitala Apr 2004

Railway Tunnelling In Frozen Ground On Bothniabana, S. Saarelainen, L. Korkiala-Tanttu, J. Viitala

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A new railway line was under construction in North-eastern Sweden, along the shoreline of the Gulf of Bothnia. The terrain consisted of Postglacial clay and silt valleys, and ridges of Precambrian bedrock, crossing the railway line. The railway level was about 20m below the ground surface. For the design of freezing, a freezing analysis was carried out to determine the pipeline depths and distances, to estimate the necessary time for freezing and to determine temperatures within the frozen zone. To estimate the deformations, displacements and safety level, a mechanical analysis of the tunnel cross-section was carried out. As input, the …

The site investigation for the Manhattan Segment comprised archive searches, rock exposure mapping, geophysical surveys, test borings in soil and rock, in-situ testing, groundwater monitoring, and laboratory testing of soil, water and rock. Approximately 200 borings have been …

Effects Of Liquefaction On The Numerical Analysis Of A Single Pile-Soil Interaction During Earthquakes, Fusao Oka, Lu Chih-Wei, Zhang Feng Apr 2004

Effects Of Liquefaction On The Numerical Analysis Of A Single Pile-Soil Interaction During Earthquakes, Fusao Oka, Lu Chih-Wei, Zhang Feng

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Dynamic behavior of pile-foundations during earthquakes is important for the performance of many foundations. To clarify the mechanism of the soil-pile interaction, we have conducted a series of numerical analysis of a single pile foundation in the different types of a two-layer ground. Upper layer of the ground is composed of dense sand, reclaimed soils, medium dense sand or loose sand, and the lower layer of the ground is composed of clayey soils. In the liquefaction analysis, we have used a fully coupled effective stress analysis method with the cyclic elasto-plastic and elasto-viscoplastic constitutive models for sandy soils and clays. …

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

A new cable-stayed bridge for US Highway 17 is currently under construction over the Cooper River between Mount Pleasant and Charleston, South Carolina. This new bridge will replace two existing structures, the Silas Pearlman and the Grace Memorial Bridges. When completed, the new bridge will have a 1,546 feet span over the Cooper River, making this bridge the longest cable-stayed span in North America. The foundations for this replacement bridge are drilled shafts embedded within the Cooper Marl formation, which underlies the near surface lower coastal plain soil deposits. Depending on the location within the bridge structure, the drilled shafts …

A Half Century Of Tapered-Pile Usage At The John F. Kennedy International Airport, John S. Horvath, Thomas Trochalides

International Conference on Case Histories in Geotechnical Engineering

Tapered driven piles have been the deep foundation of choice ever since construction of and at the well-known John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFKIA) in New York City began in the late 1940s. Timber piles were used primarily for many decades but various brands of closed-end steel pipe piles have become preferred in recent years as engineers have sought ever-increasing allowable axial-compressive loads per pile. With currently available pile types it is now possible to routinely install tapered piles that have an allowable axial-compressive service-load capacity per pile in excess of 400 kips (1780 kN), with net ultimate axial-compressive geotechnical …

Electron Vacuum Tube Guitar Amplifier, Erik Widman Apr 2004

Electron Vacuum Tube Guitar Amplifier, Erik Widman

Honors Theses

This project consisted of designing and fabricating an electron vacuum tube guitar amplifier. Vacuum tubes have become obsolete in modern electronics due to their size, cost, and inefficiency. However, vacuum tubes are still commonly used in guitar amplifiers. Vacuums tube's nonlinear amplifying characteristics are ideal for distorting a signal. Hence vacuum tubes are used in distorting guitar amplifiers commonly used in rock music. While guitar amplifiers consist of many subsystems, the focus of this senior design report is the distorting preamplifier.

Imagine a guitar signal as a pure sine wave (although in reality the signal is a complicated series of …

Gas-Diffusion Process In A Tubular Cathode Substrate Of A Sofc, Part Ii: Identification Of Gas-Diffusion Process Using Ac Impedance Method, Kevin Huang Apr 2004

Gas-Diffusion Process In A Tubular Cathode Substrate Of A Sofc, Part Ii: Identification Of Gas-Diffusion Process Using Ac Impedance Method, Kevin Huang

Faculty Publications

The effects of cathodic dc bias, bulk pO2, and effective O2 -diffusivity on ac impedance spectra of Siemens Westinghouse Power Corporation’s cathode-supported solid oxide fuel cells were systematically studied over a temperature range of 800 to 1000°C. It was found that the activation process dominated the overall electrode kinetics at 800°C, by which the applied dc bias reduced the electrode resistance considerably. With increasing the temperature to above 900°C, the activation process became effectively activated, leading to a visible arc at the lowest frequency on the impedance spectrum, which is relevant to the pore gas-diffusion process. …

Gas-Diffusion Process In A Tubular Cathode Substrate Of An Sofc, Part I: Theoretical Analysis Of Gas-Diffusion Process Under Cylindrical Coordinate System, Kevin Huang

Faculty Publications

In this the first part of a two-part paper, the gas-diffusion process through a thick and porous tubular cathode substrate of a solid oxide fuel cell-(SOFC) was theoretically analyzed using classic Fick’s diffusion equation under the cylindrical coordinate system. The effects of current density, temperature, oxygen diffusivity or porosity, wall thickness, and bulk pO2 on the concentration (or pore in this paper) polarization were calculated and are presented graphically. The results clearly show a greater impact on pore polarization by current density, oxygen diffusivity, wall thickness, and bulk pO2, but not by temperature. In addition, …

Synthesis Of Electromagnetic Devices With A Novel Neural Network, Heriberto Jose Delgado, Michael Thursby, Fredric M. Ham

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

A novel Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is presented, which has been designed for computationally intensive problems, and applied to the optimization of electromagnetic devices such as antennas and microwave devices. The ANN exploits a unique number representation in conjunction with a more standard neural network architecture. An ANN consisting of a hetero-associative memory provided a very efficient method of computing the necessary geometrical values for the devices, when used in conjunction with a new randomization process. The number representation used provides significant insight into this new method of fault-tolerant computing. Further work is needed to evaluate the potential of this …

Consistency Restoration In Point And Interval Spatio-Temporal Reasoning, Florent Launay, Debasis Mitra Apr 2004

Consistency Restoration In Point And Interval Spatio-Temporal Reasoning, Florent Launay, Debasis Mitra

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Faculty Publications

In this work, we first have proposed a technique to define the “causes” of inconsistency on an online point based reasoning constraint network. Second, we introduce an algorithm that proposes the user a minimal set of relations to remove when inconsistencies are detected. We have developed and implemented a battery of algorithms for the purpose of this type of reasoning. Some useful theorems and properties are defined for proving the ‘minimal’ aspect of the algorithm. Finally, we found that our investigation was a polynomially solvable sub problem of the vertex cover problem.

Hardware Synthesis Of Synchronous Data Flow Models, Matthew R. Koecher Apr 2004

Hardware Synthesis Of Synchronous Data Flow Models, Matthew R. Koecher

Theses and Dissertations

Synchronous Dataflow (SDF) graphs are a convenient way to represent many signal processing and dataflow operations. Nodes within SDF graphs represent computation while arcs represent dependencies between nodes. Using a graph representation, SDF graphs formally specify a dataflow algorithm without any assumptions on the final implementation. This allows an SDF model to be synthesized into a variety of implementation techniques including both software and hardware.

This thesis presents a technique for generating an abstract hardware representation from SDF models. The techniques presented here operate on SDF models defined structurally within the Ptolemy modeling environment. The behavior of the nodes within …

Re-Evaluation Of So2 Release Of The 15 June 1991 Pinatubo Eruption Using Ultraviolet And Infrared Satellite Sensors, Song Guo, Gregg J. S. Bluth, William I. Rose, M. I. Watson, A. J. Prata

Department of Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences Publications

In this study, ultraviolet TOMS (Total Ozone Mapping Spectrometer) satellite data for SO2 are re-evaluated for the first 15 days following the 15 June 1991 Pinatubo eruption to reflect new data retrieval and reduction methods. Infrared satellite SO2 data from the TOVS/HIRS/2 (TIROS (Television Infrared Observation Satellite) Optical Vertical Sounder/High Resolution Infrared Radiation Sounder/2) sensor, whose data sets have a higher temporal resolution, are also analyzed for the first time for Pinatubo. Extrapolation of SO2 masses calculated from TOMS and TOVS satellite measurements 19–118 hours after the eruption suggest initial SO2 releases of 15 ± 3 …

Dartmouth Scholarship

A recently developed technique for reconstructing approximately two-dimensional (∂/∂z≈0), time-stationary magnetic field structures in space is applied to two magnetopause traversals on the dawnside flank by the four Cluster spacecraft, when the spacecraft separation was about 2000km. The method consists of solving the Grad-Shafranov equation for magnetohydrostatic structures, using plasma and magnetic field data measured along a single spacecraft trajectory as spatial initial values. We assess the usefulness of this single-spacecraft-based technique by comparing the magnetic field maps produced from one spacecraft with the field vectors that other spacecraft actually observed. For an optimally selected invariant (z)-axis, the correlation between …

Towards A General Methodology For Designing Sub-Noise Measurement Procedures, Roberto Osegueda, George R. Keller, Scott A. Starks, R. Araiza, Dm. Bizyaev, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many practical situations, the measurement result z depends not only on the measured value x, but also on the parameters s describing the experiment's setting and on the values of some auxiliary quantities y; the dependence z=f(x,s,y) of z on x, s, and y is usually known. In the ideal case when we know the exact value of the auxiliary parameter y, we can solve the above equation and find the desired value x. In many real-life situations, we only know y with some uncertainty, and this uncertainty leads to additional uncertainty in x.

If we are trying to …

The Airline Quality Rating 2004, Brent D. Bowen, Dean Headley, Uno Aviation Institute

Faculty Books and Monographs

UNOAI Report 04-1

The Airline Quality Rating (AQR) was developed and first announced in early 1991 as an objective method of comparing airline quality on combined multiple performance criteria. This current report, the Airline Quality Rating 2004, reflects monthly Airline Quality Rating scores for 2003. AQR scores far the calendar year 2003 are based on 15 elements in four major areas that focus on airline performance aspects important to air travel consumers.

The Airline Quality Rating 2004 is a summary of month-by-month quality ratings for U.S. airlines that have at least 1% of domestic passenger volume during 2003. Using the …

Interval-Valued And Fuzzy-Valued Random Variables: From Computing Sample Variances To Computing Sample Covariances, Jan B. Beck, Vladik Kreinovich, Berlin Wu Apr 2004

Interval-Valued And Fuzzy-Valued Random Variables: From Computing Sample Variances To Computing Sample Covariances, Jan B. Beck, Vladik Kreinovich, Berlin Wu

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Due to measurement uncertainty, often, instead of the actual values xi of the measured quantities, we only know the intervals [xi]=[Xi-Di,Xi+Di], where Xi is the measured value and Di is the upper bound on the measurement error (provided, e.g., by the manufacturer of the measuring instrument). In such situations, instead of the exact value of the sample statistics such as covariance C(x,y), we can only have an interval [C](x,y) of possible values of this statistic. It is known that in general, computing such an interval [C](x,y) for C(x,y) is an NP-hard problem. In this paper, we describe an algorithm that …

Modelling Measurement Processes As Timed Information Processes In Simplex Domains, Gracaliz P. Dimuro, Antonio C. Da Rocha Costa, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

This paper presents a domain-theoretic model for measurements and measuring instruments, by making explicit in simplex-domain structures two important aspects of measurement processes: the notion of standard representation relation, established between the (physical) values that are being measured and the meanings of the readings (semantic values) of the measuring instruments used to measure them, and the time time underlying every measurement process, in a way that it is possible to trace the hostory of every measuring process. We also present the modelling of measurements performed by combined measuring instruments synchrfonized in time. Finally, the domain-theoretic modelling of a sample measuring …

Group-Theoretic Approach As A General Framework For Sensors, Neural Networks, Fuzzy Control, And Genetic Boolean Networks, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Chitta Baral, Valery D. Mazin Apr 2004

Group-Theoretic Approach As A General Framework For Sensors, Neural Networks, Fuzzy Control, And Genetic Boolean Networks, Hung T. Nguyen, Vladik Kreinovich, Chitta Baral, Valery D. Mazin

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

When describing a system of interacting genes, a useful approximation is provided by a Boolean network model, in which each gene is either switched on or off - i.e., its state is described by a Boolean variable.

Recent papers by I. Shmulevich et al. show that although in principle, arbitrarily complex Boolean functions are possible, in reality, the corresponding Boolean networks can be well described by Boolean functions from one of the so-called Post classes - classes that are closed under composition. These classes were originally described by E. Post.

It is known that the Boolean model is only an …

Probabilities, Intervals, What Next? Extension Of Interval Computations To Situations With Partial Information About Probabilities, Vladik Kreinovich, Gennady N. Solopchenko, Scott Ferson, Lev Ginzburg, Richard Alo

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

In many real-life situations, we are interested in the value of a physical quantity y that is difficult or impossible to measure directly. To estimate y, we find some easier-to-measure quantities x1,...,xn which are related to y by a known relation y=f(x1,...,xn). Measurements are never 100% accurate; hence, the measured values Xi are different from xi, and the resulting estimate Y=f(X1,...,Xn) is different from the desired value y=f(x1,...,x_n). How different?

Traditional engineering to error estimation in data processing assumes that we know the probabilities of different measurement error Dxi=Xi-xi.

In many practical situations, we only know the upper bound Di …
